Today's Special -- Julianne MacLean

I am thrilled to welcome USA Today Bestselling historical author Julianne MacLean back to the Romance Dish! Julianne is the author of the hot, sexy, Highlander series from St. Martin's Press -- Captured by the Highlander(March 2011), Claimed by the Highlander (April 2011), and the upcoming Seduced by the Highlander (out next Tuesday, October 4th). But, Julianne is more than just a terrific writer--did you know that she once went sailing with Prince Edward? She certainly did! You can learn more fun facts about Julianne by visiting her website, but before you do, welcome her here and see why she says....

That Highlander is Out of Control

Thanks for having me here ladies! I’m excited about my latest historical release, SEDUCED BY THE HIGHLANDER, which hits bookstores on October 4. It’s the third and final book in my Highlander trilogy, and I dare say, it is the steamiest - which is kind of strange, since the hero (a hot-blooded seducer of women, reputed to be the most passionate lover in the Highlands) is forced to be celibate.

Why, you ask, would such a man be denied his pleasures? Because he was cursed by a seductive witch three years earlier, and now any woman he takes to his bed will be doomed for eternity.

When the story opens, Lachlan MacDonald has been living for quite some time without sex, and let’s face it--he’s a raging pressure cooker inside. All he wants to do is break free of the curse and release his pent up desires, so when he finally hunts down the witch who cursed him, he’ll do anything to bend her to his will.

But as they say, the course of true lust never does run smooth, and the witch can’t remember a thing about her life, much less how to break the curse. It’s been three years since their tempestuous encounter, and in the meantime, she has been identified as the beautiful, long lost heiress of Drumloch Manor.

Lachlan has no choice but to drag her back to Kinloch Castle to prove that she is no well-bred heiress, but a spiteful, vengeful witch in disguise.

But how long can he keep his desires under control? And why is she so tempting to him in every way, when she is his sworn enemy?

What I loved about writing this book was the element of the forbidden. No matter how badly Lachlan wants to bed this woman, he must resist, and even when things get hot and heavy between them, he must remember the curse and withdraw from any lovemaking before it goes too far.

That, to me, is heroic behavior, because at heart, he is doing what is necessary to protect her from his curse, even though he blames her for it, and his raging body wants something else entirely. Every time he touches her, a fire ignites in his blood, and he is torn between what his body wants and what honor dictates. (That is what we romance writers lovingly call internal conflict.)

So tell me readers - what do you think of a romance hero who is willing to wait for the ultimate intimacy with a woman, even when he wants it more than anything? When you are reading a romance, do you enjoy the element of the forbidden, or the “pleasure delay?” Can you recommend any great romance novels that embrace this theme?

Leave a comment about any of the above, or just pop in and say hi, and you’ll be entered to win one of FIVE copies of CLAIMED BY THE HIGHLANDER, which is the second book in the trilogy where Lachlan and the witch are first introduced.

And please visit my website for an explosive excerpt from SEDUCED BY THE HIGHLANDER, and for more information about my books and more contest info.

I think I might be reading one like that right now. I haven't gotten that far into it to see how long our hero holds out denying his own pleasure but he is making an effort. It is one of Jennifer Blakes titles in her new trilogy Seduced by Grace, the trilogy is The Three Graces.
I am loving it so far.

  4. Hi Julianne! Great to have you with us today!

Like Dianna, I do love my Highlanders. When a hero, especially a lusty Highlander, puts his own satisfaction on hold to protect his heroine that just makes my heart sigh...and makes me appreciate the sexy parts even more when they finally get to them! :)

  5. Julianne,

I've enjoyed many of your books over the years. I started with your American heiress series.

I think Debbie Macomber's books make the hero wait for intimacy and satisfaction. Sherryl Woods too.

I do like it when the H.H have to get to know one another before becoming intimate.

However, I do like the chemistry that sweeps good sense away in some of the Desires that I read.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Ah yes, Laurie - when good sense gets swept aside by desire. I love that, too - and there's quite of bit of that in this book, to be sure!

And I love Debbie Macomber, too.

  8. Good morning, Julianne! Congrats on your new release! We have a lot of Highlander fans here. ;-)

Yes!! I looooove it when pleasure is delayed. I am a HUGE fan of sexual tension, ask anyone. *g* I agree with PJ--it makes me appreciate the love scene even more when they finally get to it. Sigh.

  11. I love this idea. It holds both a touch of the forbidden but also shows that the hero can and will control his desire so the heroine will be safe and/or ready to acknowledge her love for him. This makes the HEA more fulfilling.

  12. I think delayed gratification is a great way to up the tension in a novel. Love highlanders - especially yours.

  13. I absolutely love some build up and some sexual frustration (in my books i mean)... I think any man who can snuff those desires to do the noble thing is amazing, and shows great restraint! If they just jump right into the lovemaking it kindof ruins the book for me, there's GOT to be some build up! :)

  17. I'm sure they were both suffering! Bless his ummm... heart.

My hero in Run into the Wind was tortured for a while. He thought he was falling for a boy who actually turns out to be a spunky woman in hiding.

I kinda like it when the men don't get their way. ;-)

    Great post!

  18. I love the tension that builds when the hero has to wait. One of my favorite books like this is Johanna Lindsey's The Magic of You. Also there are a few Diana Palmer books where the hero us a virgin. I like when the author mixes things up sometimes.

  20. There's a reason Highlanders are classic romance heroes, and it can take all the famous strong will of a Highland hero to put someone else's best interests ahead of his own. It takes a strong man to resist a strong urge if doing so will result in a greater good. Can't wait to see how Lachlan handles this situation.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love Highlanders! There is something to be said for delayed gratification. I recently read Seduce Me At Sunrise and the hero about drove himself crazy not going after the woman he wanted.

When I read your comment of if I enjoyed the element of the forbidden, or the “pleasure delay" when reading I almost burst out laughing because I love it and think of it as sweet revenge. Yes! Make him wait whether he's willing or not!

I guess that you have to know that as a wife and mother I am the only female in the household that was filled with male testoserone and I'm sorry the thought of the hero going thru that just seems like sweet revenge to me. I think my thoughts would be forgiven by thousands of mothers out there who can't begin to remember how many socks with no mates they've washed.

I love your books because you always make the characters come to life and have thier own distinct personality.

I love your Highland books but also recently read The Color of Heaven and wanted to let you know how much I appreciated the way you wrote the story and plan on giving a copy to several of my friends for Xmas. Definately a must read for all.

  50. Hi Julianne--I just got my newsletter and raced over here, upon your recommendation! I love creative variety in my novels, so it's nice when authors mix up the "deliverance of intimacy." It just depends on the characters, and what's happening with them. Thanks for visiting The Dish today.

  51. To me in a sense it's the ultimate sacrifice that a hero can give the heroine. To deny himself the pleasures of the lovemaking. To keep himself in check. To stop himself from taking the heroine is entirely too sexy for me. Sure I've read plenty of romances but I do like the heroes that abstain from sex from the heroine for a time. :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Another newletter reader, pant, pant, racing over... I really prefer those that wait.. so you know it's not just raging hormones... Besides, let the two get to know each other a little better

  53. essessewThere is nothing like a "Highlander" story to provide a break from work reality. I'm currently reading Diana Gabaldon's latest, but can't wait to add your new book to my Julianne MacLean collection!

  54. I've been waiting for this final book in the series, and I'm so glad I no longer have to deny myself the pleasure. But it will make the reading of this book so much better - and I feel the same way about the delayed gratification aspect.

One of the best relationships in that category is Jean and Joe from A Town Like Alice.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The delayed gratification aspect is great. The tension builds, expectation builds and it is all so exciting.

Sure glad my "delayed gratification" is here with this book. I have been waiting!

  56. Hi Julianne,
My favorite topic "Highlanders". Love them. The denying of pleasure in spite of how desperately he wants to make love to the Heroine is the ultimate act of Hero material. :)
I love the denial and inner turmoil it creates and the building up just before he finally makes love to her makes it an explosive read.I can't think of an individual title but it's always this way with his best friends sister type stories. Thanks for the post today.

  59. When I think of all the books I've read in which sex is instanteous(it seems), it's refreshing to hear of a hero that actually has the control to hold back rather than hurt a woman. But he's not an angel either, is he if he was cursed by a witch? I want to know about that backstory! I'll be looking for this one.

  60. I think a hero who is willing to wait is putting is pleasure before the one he cares about and that's awesome. I enjoy the "pleasure delay" in a romance more that the element of the forbidden, because it is usually torture for the poor hero, as well as the heroine.
Seduced by the Highlander sounds fantastic and I'm looking forward to reading it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I can not wait to read this book about Highlanders- yummy.
I enjoy reading when a man really wants a woman and then he wants to wait to make sure that their first time is just right, even though he doesn't want to wait. Linda Howard, Lisa Kleypas Carly Phillips are just a few of many authors who use this basis.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Exciting, exciting!! Congrats on your upcoming release, Julianne, it's going to be a warmer than usual October with the Highlander out of control.
Romance is all about the anticipation, in novels and in reality - so the longer the hero (and heroine) puts off that mind blowing moment, the better for the reader. There are so many wonderful examples and too many fine writers who do it so well to mention but I will give acknowledgement to the queen of romance who led the way, Kathleen E. Woodiwiss. The Flame and the Flower - the beginning of modern romance. Happy Reading.

  63. As the great-great-granddaughter of a Scots woman who ultimately landed in Kaslo, B.C., I always have been attracted to Scots settings and characters.....a legacy thing? So, your Highlander trilogy is a perfect fit! The anticipation of a thing many times is more exciting than the having of it.....but not always. I recommend Gabaldon's "Outlander" series.

  65. I thoroughly enjoy highlander stories and an element of magic is an extra bonus. I agree there is something about the forbidden that appeals to me, it makes a hero and heroine make choices and develop. The end result can be very rewarding and the HEA feels deserved.

  66. Hi, Julianne! I have a definite weakness for Highlanders. That sexy burr, the kilt...*sigh*

All of that internal conflict and sexual tension builds up to one heck of a climax. Pun intended! LOL I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I don't necessarily mind the delay if it's done well. I tend to read a lot of erotic romance, so in general, I do like the up front sensuality. As far as forbidden love, I have a soft spot for vampire romances (a la Buffy & Angel, Buffy & Spike, Bella & Edward and Elena & Stefan/Damon).

I enjoy a good Highlander book. I used to drool all over Karen Marie Moning's MacKelter series. There is something about an alpha male with a sexy brogue, a sword, a few knives and a kilt.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Ooh, hot highlanders!

Delaying gratification can really whip sexual tension into a frenzy, so that the reader can say "yes!" when the couple finally comes together.

I think the idea of a hero waiting for his love to indulge is at the core of romance and, like another commentor said, it adds that delicous sexual tension that can sometimes be more excting and, yes, more arousing, than the actual act.
I've wanted to read your Highlander trilogy since before the first one was released. If I am lucky enough to win this one, I will definitely pick up the others.

In reference to ur question I love the "pleasure delay" I feel all of the pent up need and wanting that the characters feel. I have recently found an author who does the "pleasure delay" very well that is Jill Monroe. I read Lord of Rage and it was very good. So good I will be adding more of her work along with your to my TBR list.

  95. I love the element of the "Forbidden" in romance novels. I think it adds greater depth to the story and you get to witness the struggle between what a character knows is right and what they really want to do. Can't wait to read the latest.

  96. I enjoy both types of stories, it really depends on the characters and their situations. If it looks impossible that the characters will be getting together then it makes sense that they would risk a lot to be together.

  97. Cannot wait to read Lachlan's story.

Anyone who can take the villian in the first book and *successfully* turns him into the hero of the second - deserves a read.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I think they should wait until:
    - The know each other
    - both want to be "together"

  99. Hello Julianne,
    1. Congratulationss on your new release. I have to delay my gratification on this book while I catch up with the first two books in this series. They all sound terrific and I do love men in Kilts!
    2. My favorite story of Delayed Gratification has to be in the OUTLANDER SERIES. Twenty years and over two centuries before Claire and Jaime Frasier can be together again! Sigh!
    3. Happy birthday to deerdoe69; I hope you had a wonderful day and that you win this book!

  101. I enjoy the 'wait'. :) It makes it more special when the couple went through a lot of obstacles to be together....

  102. Congrats on your latest release!
I think a wait increases the tension in a story.
