Today's Special - - Suzanne Ferrell

It is with great pleasure that we welcome newly-published author, Romance Bandit and one of our favorite people, Suzanne Ferrell to The Romance Dish!  Suzanne's love affair with romance began as a teen and she always knew that someday she'd be creating stories of her own.  While writing award-winning manuscripts (she's a two-time RWA Golden Heart Finalist) over the years, she's also been busy raising a family, helping to deliver babies in her career as an labor and delivery nurse and whipping up masterpieces in her kitchen.  Clearly, she's a multi-talented woman!  Suzanne is here today to tell us about her newly-released debut novel, The Surrender of Lacy Morgan.  Take it away, Suz!

Thanks PJ and all the Dish girls for letting me come and talk today. I adore your blog and all the support y’all give to the romance writing community and the Romance Bandits.

My first novel, The Surrender of Lacy Morgan, was just released as an e-book by Ellora’s Cave Publishing on Friday Feb 4th. This has been a long road to publication, but it’s also a coming full circle for me.

I started my writing career with two American historical romances based in Colorado in the 1880’s. (Some of you might have read the installment version of RESCUE on my blog @ http://www.rockymountainromance.blogspot.com/ last year.) Right after I wrote those books the American historical romance market literally dried up drier than the Mojave Desert. Sigh.

So, I tried my hand at contemporary romance, contemporary suspense, contemporary small town, etc. While the stories garnered awards, contest finals and requests for submissions, none quite made the leap into the published world.

So, I was reading one of my critique partner, Jo Davis’ eroticas when an idea hit me. Why not try my hand at an erotic historical? All my books have been more sensual than the average book. Could I push the envelope further into the erotic world? I didn’t want to write sex scenes just to write sex scenes. They’d need to further the story and the plot along like Jo’s did.

Hmmm…what part of erotic fiction did I like? I do like a Dominant/submissive story, but not one where the heroine is a complete doormat. I love ménage stories, but only where two men make the woman the center of their attention. Light bondage? Oh yeah!

Well, now, that all sounded pretty interesting to me. How did I combine that into a historical? Should it be English based, or did I dare try to make it a western? I mean, cowboys are sooooooooo sexy. I know, because I live in Texas.

What if my heroine is hiding from the law? What if she is the only way for my two heroes to track down a gang of outlaws? What if she’s unwilling to cooperate? Wouldn’t that be a reason for my heroes to use special techniques to get information from her?

That’s how Lacy Morgan begins her sensual journey with Marshal Quinn Halliday and his blood-brother, Marshal Dakota O’Keefe.

Here’s the website blurb to the book:

When two steely-eyed, lean-hipped strangers ride into town, Lacy Morgan knows her past has caught up with her. What she doesn’t know is that the U.S. marshals will do whatever’s necessary to capture her stepfather and his gang of murdering thieves, including bringing Lacy to her knees to serve their sexual needs.

Quinn and his blood brother Dakota are searching for the key to finding the band of outlaws who murdered their adoptive father. When they confront the sultry stepdaughter of the gang’s leader, they discover she’s unaware of her natural submissive tendencies.

As they journey to the gang’s lair, each day the men draw Lacy further and further into a sensuality she’s never known and a trust she’d sworn never to surrender to again. Using her lusty body for their combined pleasure, they find themselves ensnared in the same tender trap.

So, coming full circle, I’ve finally gotten an American western historical published. I had to push myself and step out of my comfort zone, but the end product has been well worth the effort.

Have you ever had to push yourself out of your comfort zone? Tried something new or daring? Were you happy with the results or the experience?

  1. Ooh, steely-eyed and lean-hipped? You got me at hello, kiddo! Suzanne, you know how desperately I've been waiting for Lacy to be released! Huge congratulations on your success and on sticking to your (Colt) guns! I hope you have a huge success and I look forward to many celebrations of your brilliance in the lair.

Oh, and waving madly at my darling Dishies!!! Thanks for having Suz here today. She's great, isn't she?

  2. I tend to be shy in my life, so I do not tend to push myself out of my comfort zone. However, when I was 19, I really fell for a guy who was a friend. To make him see me differently, I changed the way I dressed, and flirted more. For a while, I was VERY satisfied with the results, at least until the end of the summer when I lost interest in him.

This book sounds really good. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

  3. Hey Anna! So glad to see you here with our good friend's the Dishers!

I have been teasing the Bandits with some not so PG excerpts on our private loop, so I'm hoping you enjoy the rest of TSoLM!

And yes Quinn and Dakota are Steely-eyes, lean-hipped and happy to accomodate!

  4. Whew!!! What a fab excerpt! Suz, this is great :-) I'm so excited for you and ready to celebrate all your wonderful success!!!

I do love pushing my comfort zone. At my own pace, of course LOL. I remember when I was trying to sell to Temptation and the line closed. My now editor then told me to try my hand at a Blaze. Oh, no way! I couldn't write that hot!!!! No no no.

But then, you know how that worked out LOL.

A big whoohooo and wave to the Dishes, and a round of drinks on me to celebrate Suz' fabulous release :-D

  5. Hey June! Did the chages you put yourself through catch his eye for that summer? Did it make you want to try new things in other areas of your life?

I hope you get a chance to read The Surrender of Lacy Morgan. Lacy goes through many changes throughout this book.

Thanks for the celebration drink! It's wonderful to have this book out there in publishing world!! And the Dishes are always such nice hostesses, aren't they?

Now that was some successful self-pushing! And we're all enjoying the results!

  7. Hi Suz -

Well - you had me with the cover, you know how I adore corsets (grin). Serious congratulations on the release of Lacey (oh - that sounds like a sequel).

I pushed the limits of my comfort zone with my first historical as well. I figured (judging from past rejections) it would never get published anyway so I pushed my conservative self to write a really, really sexy book - and it sold! Even with the last book, I thought my editor would pull back on some of the scenes - but no...didn't happen. I'm beginning to think you have to push your comfort levels or the story will be static and boring. So yahoo for the release! Wishing you wonderful sales -

Funny you should say this. In the middle of writing TSoLM I had a panic moment. I poured all of my frustration and anxiety about being "out on a tightwire with no net" to Jo in a hugely long paragraph.

    Her reply? "Write Fearlessly."

And that's what I did, and it sold. So yes, to get published you have to write fearlessly and push your boundries!

  9. CONGRATULATIONS, SUZ!!

Popping out of the deadline cave to say hi and well done you!! I sometimes wonder what I'd do if the Regency market dried up and I don't have a good answer for that. I admire you for sticking with what you love and adapting it to the market like the savvy, talented writer you are. I've downloaded Lacy and she'll be my reward when I emerge, blinking into the sunlight at the end of this book. Can't wait!

Hello, Dishy ladies! Lovely to 'see' you:)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hey Christine!

Thanks for the congrats and the admiration, but I bet you'd find a way to make a twist on the Regency market if push came to shove. And we'd all love those stories as much as we do the ones you've already given us!

Whoo Hoo I am soo looking forward to reading this story I loved Refuge and am really looking forward to getting to know Quinn and Dakota they sound very yummy to me and I am sure Lacy is going to be wonderful.

I honestly don't like getting out of my comfort zone but I have pushed my self a little over the last year to help organize the ARRC2011 I am on the committee and have had to speak to a lot of people I don't know and that is something that can be very hard for me LOL.

Dishes thanks for having Suz along today and again I am soo happy for you Suz well done way to go.

    Have Fun
    Helen

  12. This one looks really good. I am normally one that is not big on change. I always stick to what I like. Well up until a few years ago I wouldn't go near historicals. I just had no interest in them. I really only read paranormals and YA. I kept seeing Teresa Medeiros' The Vampire Who Loved Me everywhere. So I eventually picked it up and gave it s whirl. Am I glad that I did. It opened my eyes to such a terrific genre. Historicals are now my absolute favorite and I cant get enough. I am so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone.

  13. Hey Danielle!

That book by Teresa holds a special place in my daughter Lyndsey's heart. Lyndsey is an artist and below is her interpretation of those two characters that she did as a fan-art gift for Teresa:

Thanks for the congrats! I think you're almost as excited that TSoLM is out now as I am. LOL!

ARRC is the Australian Romance Readers' Conference, isn't it? I know you've been very instrumental in getting that going! And I hear it's going to be fantastic this year!! Isn't it amazing how something we love so much (reading romances) will push us to push ourselves? Maybe some year I'll be able to come! Now that would be pushing me out of my comfort zone!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Suz, you had me at lean-hipped strangers! *g* I can't wait to download this book. I didn't get to yesterday, but this afternoon is mine. Mine! (Well, after I finish filling out the FAFSA and CSS Profile. Gannon, I'm sure, feels my pain!)

As to pushing outside my comfort zone, I've had to do that too many times to count. For some reason, every time I walk into a meeting with a new group, they want to put me in charge of something. I've taken on many responsibilities I wasn't sure I was ready for and most turned out much better than I expected. The thing is, once you've pushed that boundary out, it's moved forever. Consequently, the new challenges are tougher than the old ones. Ack!

These days, I've learned to say NO more often and to think long and hard before proferring any YES. So far, so good. But I only have one more school year with a child at home. After that, I have a feeling I may be saying YES more often since I'll have more free time. No telling what I'll get myself into!

I hope everyone buys your hot new book, Suzanne. It promises to be the thaw we need for this endless winter!

  16. Good Morning,Suz! We're so excited to have you here today talking about your debut! The Surrender of Lacy Morgan looks to be the cure we need for the colder than normal winter we've been having here in the U.S. Plenty of lovely steam! :)

  22. Hi Helen! Thanks for stopping by to help Suz celebrate her debut!

I'm so glad you stepped outside your comfort zone to help plan ARRC2011. From everything I've seen online, it looks like it's going to be a fabulous conference and you'll be able to look back on your efforts with satisfaction and pride.

  23. Hi Danielle!

Wasn't The Vampire Who Loved Me a fabulous book? I adored it!

I was like you, only with paranormals. I loved my historicals and contemps and wasn't interested in stepping outside that comfort zone until Christina Dodd published her first paranormal. I read it, loved it and, suddenly, stepping outside my comfort zone had opened up a whole new sub-genre of wonderful books!

I'm thinking you may be right! As you've heard on the news, sports and weather stations, Dallas got hit big time with ice and snow. Virtually shutting down the city by Friday. BUT on Saturday everything almost melted away.

Hmm... Do you think it could be people reading TSoLM??

  37. Suz, I am so happy for you and so excited to see you in print at last!

Thanks, Dishers, for having Suz today and spotlighting this hot book.

I stepped outside my comfort zone when I took fitness kickboxing. I've always loved action stories and superheroes, but I've also always been geeky, unathletic, klutzy and slow. Taking kickboxing (inspired by Mother's Day enrollment discount at the boy's karate school) was an attempt to see if I could bring part of my imagination into my life.

I loved it. No one but me cared that I was slow, and over time I not only became less klutzy but developed a pretty decent right cross. And this was well past the age of 30.

Kickboxing led to karate. One of the most satisfying moments of my life came when I kicked over (with a momentum-generating cross-behind sidekick, if anyone cares) a heavy bag on a stand. I can still hear that thud.

I made it to a high blue belt, the eighth belt up the scale at our school, before my knees announced they'd had enough. I've always been glad I took that first step. Sometimes, you really can do things you think maybe you can't.

Congrats again, Suz! I'm so glad you hung in there and did not quit.

  38. Great interview, Suz and thanks to the Dishers for having you here today.

Congratulations on your debut release, Suz!

I downloaded your book on Friday, the day it released, and I can't wait to dig in!

Writing my recent manuscript, BLOOD WARRIORS, a young adult series, took me out of my comfort zone, but it was very rewarding. I just entered it in the Amazon contest!

  39. Suz is here! Yay! Steely-eyed and lean-hipped? Yes ma'am!!

Big congrats on your release---so very exciting!

I guess when I married a Navy man and started moving every 2-3 years, that was moving outside of my comfort zone. But then it became the norm, and I actually liked it. My hubby has been retired for almost 4 years, and believe it or not, I'm getting the urge to move. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  40. Woohoo, Suz is in the house!! Huge congrats on your debut! We are thrilled you can be here to celebrate with us. :)

I love being in my comfort zone, but have been pushed out of it with mixed results. Sometimes it was a good thing and sometimes it wasn't. Good or bad, it was a learning experience, nonetheless.

  41. Hey Suz!!! I am so glad you are with us today!! Congrats on your first release!!

First, let me just say ... not one cowboy but TWO ... girl, you sure know how to make it hot in here *fanning self*

As far as getting out of my comfort zone ... I guess I would would have to say that writing books reviews is one thing that pushes me out of my comfort zone. See, I really am I shy person. REALLY! I don't like to be the center of attention and I am really insecure when it comes to how I think others see me. But I am so happy I took the plunge. Not only have I been introduced to so many wonderful authors and stories, but I have made life-long friends in the other Dishes (Andrea, PJ, and Gannon).

  43. WOOOOHOOOO, Suz!! Congrats on this, and I'm glad stepping out of your comfort zone worked so beautifully! ;) I do so hate do that myself, being a bit of a homebody and scaredy cat!

It's great to see how well it seems to work though--as so many of the fantastic books I've read by you authors attest!!

  44. Hey Dishies! Hey Suz! Congrats on Lacy's debut! Can't wait to get in my hot little hands and read it on the download. Grins.

  52. Okay, the last time I stepped outside my comfort zone was this afternoon. I don't typically read erotica and most books with a ménage turn me off...but...Suz, I was completely captivated by The Surrender of Lacy Morgan. From beginning to end, you held me enthralled, sent my internal temp skyrocketing and made me care -really care - about these characters.

I'm very glad the folks at Ellora's Cave had the good sense to publish this story. As for stepping outside my comfort zone? Believe me, it's never felt so good! :)

I'm incredible proud of you and happy for you that pushing yourself this way has resulted in such a wonderful, happy ending! Can't wait to see where this journey takes you!

  62. Hey Andrea!

Thanks for the welcome, and I'm very delighted to be here! :)

Good or bad, it was a learning experience, nonetheless.

Isn't that the truth? For a few months when we lived in Florida, I worked on a non-obstetrics unit. While I became proficient at it, I discovered that it really wasn't for me. As soon as an OB job came open, poof! I was back in my comfort zone and loving it!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Oh PJ, I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad you like the Lacy, Quinn and Dakota's story!!

It was very important to me that this not be a ton of sex scenes thrown on a page, but that it be a story that takes the reader on a journey.

As for pushing myself out of my comfort zone? Man, every time I admit to somebody I'm a writer, I cringe. I just know they're going to smirk at me when they find out I write romance. Especially romance with, oh dear lord, sex scenes.

LOL, I've been giving a warning to everyone I work with that if they read this it's going to be much hotter than they might expect. And that while I wrote it, NO, I haven't done most of it! hehehe

  71. I bet you've seen a lot of the world with all those moves. Were any a favorite?

As far as places in the US, I'd have to say Monterey, CA is hands down my favorite. Gorgeous!

We lived overseas twice---Bahrain and Italy. Both very cool, but Italy wins the contest.

  72. My current WIP is about their blood-brother Will, who has some major problems back at their home ranch.

Yay! Am I correct in thinking the trouble is female?

  73. It was very important to me that this not be a ton of sex scenes thrown on a page, but that it be a story that takes the reader on a journey.

    That's why I enjoyed it so much,Suz.
