Duty demands he wed her. A vow requires him to hunt her. Desire compels him to protect her.

For a man who has no intention of wedding anytime soon, if ever, Thor MacLeod finds himself submitting to an unwanted marriage in one moment and obliged to hunt down his new wife in the next—all in the name of protecting his family. The task seems simple enough: find the lass accused of treason who stabbed him and then fled after their vows, return her to his commander, and then have their union dissolved. But nothing is ever simple when it comes to beguiling lasses like the fiery-haired woman he wed. Though he made a vow to never again be led by desire, the woman is proving herself to be brave and true, and suddenly, Thor is forced to question if what he feels is more than yearning, and if so, what price is he willing to pay for matters of the heart.

Traded by her father to resolve the taxes he owes the king’s son, Isolde Fitzalan’s biggest concern is protecting herself and her younger sister. So when her sister is sold off to a lord by the king’s son and Isolde is offered the chance to discover her sister’s whereabouts in return for wedding a stranger, she reluctantly agrees. But just because she was obliged to take the Highlander as a husband doesn’t mean she intends to keep the warrior around. The one thing life has taught her about men is that they cannot be trusted. Yet, when the choice is life or death, and she finds herself betrayed at every turn, putting her faith in the seemingly honorable man may be the only way to survive.

PJ's Thoughts:

If Medieval romance is your jam, Julie Johnstone is an author you should definitely be reading. For my money, she's one of the best authors writing romance set in that era.

Johnstone plunges readers straight into this story like a pack of race horses breaking from the gate. The danger is immediate, the consequences dire, and the pace never slows. I was fully engaged before the end of the first chapter and unable to put the book down until I reached the final word. I should know by now not to plan anything other than reading on the days one of her books arrives.

One of the things I most enjoy about Johnstone's books is her ability to set the stage, immersing me in the geographic, political, and human landscape of 14th century Scotland. She then creates a cast of characters with multiple layers who draw me in, engaging my emotions, heightening the stakes of the tenuous circumstances they almost always face, and the life-altering, sometimes heartbreaking choices they must make. Her characters feel real and authentic to the place and time in which they lived.

There's a touch of magic in this book that feels appropriate for a story set in the 1300's Scottish Highlands where witches, seers, and more were accepted as a normal part of life, feared but also valued for their skills.

As for Thor and Isolde, these two really tugged at my heart. I enjoyed the push and pull of their relationship as they gradually evolved from adversaries to friends to more. Their emotions felt very organic and real. I loved the respect, care, and love that very slowly grew between them as layers were peeled away, vulnerabilities exposed, and trust strengthened. Theirs was a love that was unexpected, threatened, and all the more appreciated for the lengths they had to go to secure it. I was with them every step of the way.

Highland Prize is the third book in Johnstone's Of Mist and Mountains series but stands well on its own. I haven't read the first two books yet (though I downloaded them the minute I finished this one) but I never once felt as though I was missing something by beginning with book three. I did discover (to my delight) around the 80% mark that Thor was the son of one of my favorite couples from Johnstone's Highlander Vows - Entangled Hearts series. No wonder I liked him so much! And now I'm wondering if books one and two feature second generation MacLeod's as well. I can't wait to find out!

Review & Giveaway - - The Hellion and the Hero

The Hellion and the Hero
by Emily Sullivan
A League of Scoundrels - Book 3
Publisher: Forever
Release Date: August 23, 2022
Reviewed by PJ

Lady Georgiana Arlington has always done what’s best for her family—even when it meant marrying a man she didn't love to save her father. Her husband’s death has left her stronger and bolder—a hellion, some would even say. When a mysterious enemy jeopardizes her livelihood and reputation, there’s only one person she can trust to help her uncover the threat: the same man she left heartbroken years ago.

Captain Henry Harris is no longer the penniless fortune hunter he was when they first met. Now a decorated naval hero, he could have his choice of women, but no other woman has Georgie’s allure, nor the tenacity he can’t help but admire. Assisting Lady Arlington will put both his body and his heart in danger—and yet, he can’t resist a second chance with the one woman he’s never been able to forget.

PJ's Thoughts:

A widow, ready to live life on her own terms following the end of a controlling marriage of duty. A former naval officer/spy, burdened by PTSD and the guilt of living a lie. A second chance to claim the kind of love neither thought was meant for them. Is it any wonder I devoured this book like a warm cookie straight from the oven?

Emily Sullivan continues to reel me in with her intriguing plots, relatable characters, well-crafted suspense, and heart-tugging - and sizzling - romance. Georgiana and Henry are both complex, well-developed characters who engaged me both emotionally and intellectually. I love how Sullivan's heroines are of their time but still pushing against their societal boundaries. I couldn't help but cheer for Georgiana to best those determined to stop her efforts to change England's employment landscape.

My heart ached for Henry and all that he had endured. He's a caring man, uncomfortable with his celebrity, who captured my heart. I was with Georgie and Henry every step of the way as they navigated the initial awkwardness of their reunion, along with the long-held bitterness and mistrust between them - feelings that slowly gave way to rekindled attraction, understanding, forgiveness, and more. The "more" including amorous moments in both a carriage and a bathtub. Color me exquisitely satisfied!

With a slow-burn, sensual romance, a mystery that kept me guessing right up to the reveal, a richly-depicted secondary cast that helped move the story forward, and a hard-won happily ever after, Emily Sullivan's The Hellion and the Hero kept me happily engaged from beginning to end. This book stands well on its own but for an added layer of understanding of the main couple I recommend reading book two, The Rebel and the Rake first.

Have you read Emily Sullivan yet?

Do you enjoy historical heroines who push boundaries?

It has to be uncomfortable in real life but, I admit it, I'm a pushover for a good carriage love scene. What's your love scene catnip?

Review & Giveaway - - Knot Again

Knot Again
by Kwana Jackson
Real Men Knit - Book 2
Publisher: Berkley
Release Date: July 26, 2022
Reviewed by Santa

Sometimes fireman Lucas Strong feels like he can only find any peace and quiet at the local laundromat, where every day is rinse and repeat — until a fateful run-in with his high school crush.

Hoping to attract more customers to his family’s knitting shop, Lucas Strong participated in an FDNY charity calendar and accidentally became a local celebrity. The only place he can find solace is Scrubs—a 24/7 laundromat where he can disappear for a couple of hours. But Lucas’s soapy sanctuary is shaken by an inquisitive little girl with a late-night interest in knitting, whose mother is his old school crush.

Sydney Harris knows that Harlem is like any other small town, and everyone is probably whispering about how she left such a good man—and a good life—behind to wash and fold laundry by the pound. If only they knew the truth. But Sydney will always put her daughter’s happiness first, even if that means moving back to Harlem and facing her past.

What Sydney never expected was to see Lucas again. A long-forgotten attraction kicks into high gear as Lucas and Sydney start to spend time together at the laundromat, and they must decide if this is true love or just an infatuation, thin and fragile as a soap bubble.

Santa Says:

Knot Again by Kwana Jackson is the second book in a series featuring four men and their stories following the death of their beloved adoptive mother, Mamma Joy. Mamma Joy adopted four boys, two of whom were brothers, Lucas and Noah. Mamma Joy’s death has been hard for her sons to deal with. This second five-star book centers around Lucas Strong and his second-chance romance with his high school crush, Sydney Harris.

Strong Knits, owned by Mamma Joy, was home to the four boys, now men, and a focal point of their Harlem neighborhood. Lucas and his brother Noah still live in the apartment above the store. Lucas is a firefighter whose popularity in the neighborhood racketed up a few notches with his appearance as Mr. November in a calendar of NYFD firefighters.

Sydney was the one who got away. George Washington University was her ticket out of the neighborhood and from working in her grandfather’s laundromat. Teenaged Lucas did not stop her. She went on to live and marry in the DC area and became a kind of Real Housewife of the Potomac. The illusion of that life was shattered when she found her husband cheating on her. They divorce and Sydney decides to return to the old neighborhood and is back helping out at the laundromat with her daughter.

The years slip away when Lucas and Sydney come together again but old hurts are hard to overcome. Lucas has some childhood trauma to reconcile. Sydney’s troubles are of a more contemporary nature. I was cheering for Lucas and Sydney through it all and their HEA was well worth the read.

I look forward to reading Noah's and Damian’s stories and seeing where their stories take them. As men who knit, these brothers have inspired me to try knitting once again. Or I may, like Sydney, re-take up crocheting. Kwana Jackson’s books have always delighted and inspired me and this series continues in that vein.

Tour Review - - Together Under a Snowy Skye

Together Under a Snowy Skye
by Lisa Hobman
Publisher: Boldwood Books
Release Date: August 24, 2022

After the heartbreak of a secret unrequited love, Millie Treadaway has finally found someone to spend her life with.

Harry Rose is handsome, successful and treats her like a princess. That is until Millie presents her fiancé with a surprise birthday gift, and their future is suddenly doomed.

Eight months later Millie returns to Glentorrin on the Isle of Skye for her best friend Jules’ Christmas wedding. Heartbroken, single and heavily pregnant.

Staying in Lifeboat Cottage with Jules’ brother, kindhearted Dexter, she’s given up on love and resigned herself to be the best single Mum ever.

But a shock phone call from Harry leaves her reeling and doubting herself and her decisions.

Do second chances work? Or is Dexter, right? That she deserves much more?

Can the festive spirit in Glentorrin, and a little stray Jack Russell terrier, heal her heart?

Or is she fated to remain a member of the lonely-hearts club forever?

PJ's Thoughts:

Lisa Hobman's village of Glentorrin, on the Isle of Skye, has become one of my favorite places to visit. She's created a warm, welcoming atmosphere in this close-knit village with characters I want to be friends with. Her books are so immersive that I can easily visualize myself strolling the streets, popping into the shops, and chatting over tea and biscuits with locals. I love that with each new book I get to catch up with characters from earlier books while meeting new ones who excel in capturing a place for themselves in my affections.

Parts of Millie's journey in this book were heartbreaking and emotional but they were tempered by the humor, hope, and unconditional support she found in Glentorrin, especially from her best friend Jules and Jules' brother, Dexter. And, of course, Nigel (the dog). Can't forget about him!

As for Millie's journey of the heart, I was Team Dex all the way. What a sweet, kind, steadfast, wonderful man. I adored him and wanted Dex and Millie to adore each other. But life is messy and in true Hobman fashion, there are more than a few twists and turns - and other characters - who throw up obstacles along the way, not the least of which being Harry. It's a complex, and complicated, situation but, rest assured, everything works out the way it's meant to. Of course, you won't know which way that is until you read the book. ;-)

If you enjoy charming, heartfelt, romantic stories set in a cozy Scottish village with well-developed characters, relatable storylines, and well-earned happy endings, I recommend booking a (reading) trip to Glentorrin and Together Under a Snowy Skye. While there are earlier books in the series and continuing characters who appear in this one, readers new to the series should have no trouble beginning with Millie's story.

Blue Cedar Falls - Book 2

In this sweet second-chance love story, two opposites discover their once-in-a-lifetime chemistry has only gotten stronger.

May Wu is no longer the shy teen who skipped out of her small North Carolina town right after graduation. Now she’s a successful travel writer who can handle any challenge. Until her latest assignment sends her home to Blue Cedar Falls, where,
of course, she runs straight into Han Leung, a.k.a. the guy who got away. How dare he still be so good looking, funny, and easy to talk to?

Han always does the responsible thing, which is why he put aside his dreams of opening his own restaurant to run his family’s business. But when May re-enters his life, he can no longer ignore his own wants and desires. Garden gnomes are stolen, old haunts are visited, and sparks fly between the pair, just as they always did. But Han and May broke up because they wanted vastly different lives, and that hasn’t changed—or has it?

PJ's Thoughts:

Jeannie Chin's storytelling continues to shine in this second full-length book in her new small-town series. There are so many things I'm enjoying about Blue Cedar Falls. The western North Carolina setting is beautifully described, evoking wonderful memories of days spent winding my way along lush mountain roads, leisurely exploring small, quirky towns. I can easily visualize the festivals, Han's family's Chinese restaurant, the new bar on Main Street, and the Wu family's B&B.

I love the Asian-American representation in Chin's books, placing the Wu and Leung families front and center. It's something that's still an exception rather than the norm in contemporary romance but I'm happy to see that's slowly changing.

Second-chance romance is one of my favorite tropes but thirteen years is a long time. Han's and May's reunion could have easily felt forced or unrealistic, but it doesn't. Chin navigates them through the ups and downs of a reignited relationship with finesse, humor, emotions that feel organic, and believable challenges. Not only are they getting to know one another as adults, they are also each individually dealing with complex family dynamics, career concerns, the life-altering effects of teenage bullying, and dreams delayed. It's a journey of growth for both Han and May. I love the ease between these two, the sizzling chemistry, the fun and sweetness that speaks to their long-time - if interrupted - friendship. But I also appreciate that there are issues needing to be addressed. Kudos to the author for tackling those difficult topics head-on, especially within their family units.

The secondary cast in this book is large, colorful, and necessary. I especially enjoyed Han's friend group, the people who are there for him, supportive but not afraid to be brutally honest when necessary. I love how they support his food dreams (oh my gosh, the food!). Yes, there was a good deal of drooling on my part as I read those scenes. ;-)

If you enjoy small-town romance with humor, heart, emotional depth, and positive cultural representation, give Jeannie Chin's Blue Cedar Falls series a try. Return to Cherry Blossom Way stands well on its own but for a full understanding of the Wu and Leung families, the complex dynamic among the Wu sisters, and the issues facing the town of Blue Cedar Falls, I recommend reading the stories in order.

Book 1: The Inn on Sweetbriar Lane
Novella: Only Home with You
Book 2: Return to Cherry Blossom Way

The third book, The House on Mulberry Street, is scheduled to be released March 7, 2023 and is available for pre-order. It's the youngest Wu sister's best friends - to - lovers story and I can't wait to dive in.

Have you read any of the books in Jeannie Chin's Blue Cedar Falls series?

I love books set in Western North Carolina as it's one of my favorite places. Do you have favorite settings for the romances you read?

Do you have any favorite authors writing Asian-American lead characters in romance?

A devil’s bargain burns the hottest….

For years, fiercely independent Gwen Cully has worked as the village blacksmith, keeping her family’s business going. But when a local rival threatens her livelihood, Gwen has nowhere to turn ... until a devastatingly handsome fugitive takes shelter in her shop and sparks fly.

Unrepentant rogue Kellan Fox’s entire existence has been a dangerous game of deception that leads him into a fight for survival—and straight into the arms of a tall, fiery beauty. When Gwen protects him from an angry mob of villagers, Kellan sees the perfect solution to both their troubles. A marriage—in name only—that will last a single year.

Only a marriage of convenience can’t hide their searing attraction. It glows hotter than Gwen’s forge and reaches deep below the tempting mask Kellan wears for the world. With every sizzling glance and scorching kiss, Gwen surrenders more of herself to the molten passion she finds in Kellan’s strong embrace. But can she ever truly trust her heart to a scoundrel?

PJ's Thoughts:

A marriage of convenience between a fiercely independent female blacksmith and a charming con man caught in the act? With a setup like that, I couldn't dive into this one fast enough! Okay, so I had to suspend disbelief a bit in the opening pages of the book when our heroine, a fine, upstanding member of the community proposes a marriage of convenience with a thief she's just met but Jordan sells it. At least, she sold it to me. Both Gwen and Kellan have valid reasons for their decisions and who am I to scoff when I know this author most likely has plenty of delicious fun in the offing?

I don't think I've ever read a book with a blacksmith heroine before and, let me tell you, I loved her. Gwen is strong, fierce, hardworking, and unapologetically herself. She runs her own forge and suffers no fools, especially those trying to overtake her business. She could not be a more perfect match for Kellan, a man who has never done an honest day's work in his life but who has enough goodness in him to perhaps realize there could be another way...a better way.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for a charming con man but I was pulling for Kellan from the get-go. I love that he was immediately attracted to Gwen, recognizing her statuesque beauty (when her fellow townspeople all consider her masculine and "odd"). I love that he didn't try to change her or take charge. He appreciated all of her qualities, especially her strength and fortitude.

I also enjoyed the changes brought about in both Kellan and Gwen as a result of their time together. The deepening desire between them sizzles, catching Gwen off guard and opening up that vulnerable, feminine side of her that she's never explored (If you're a Sophie Jordan fan, you already know you're in for some amazingly sensual, organically placed scenes). As for Kellan, his growing feelings for Gwen give him the incentive he's never had to make something of himself that would make her - and him - proud. Of course, there are obstacles along this path that challenge his convictions - and hers - but readers do get their happily ever after in the end.

Speaking of the end, that really is one of the only quibbles I have with this book. The final chapter felt like a rush to the conclusion. I would have enjoyed a bit slower pace with more discussion between Kellan and Gwen, more emotional depth, before they are sent happily off into the sunset. But that's me. Others may not feel the same.

The Scoundrel Falls Hard is the third book of a series but stands well on its own. There's an overarching theme for the series but I never felt lost or confused for having jumped in at this point. I will, however, be buying the first two books as well as the fourth when it releases. If you're in the market for a refreshingly original historical romance with engaging characters, a fast-moving story, and a happy ending, give this one a try.

Forzas aren't quitters. That's the motto professional bull rider Justin Forza's dad has drilled into his head since the first time he climbed into the bucking chute. After a serious injury, doctor’s orders are to stay out of the arena. But if Justin can win one more championship, he’ll be able to continue the family legacy, set himself up for life, and finally confess his love to his best friend Emmeline.

Emmeline Porter lives by one rule: never date a bull rider. She’s seen the damage a bad ride can cause. As a last resort to stop Justin from returning to the rodeo circuit, she convinces him to take a trip to Paradise Island, a tropical haven off the coast of Texas. She hopes cutting Justin off from the pressure his dad is laying on him will give her best friend the clarity he needs to walk away for good.

The close quarters and island adventures put their friendship to the test, and it’s not long before real feelings surface and threaten to sweep them both away.

PJ's Thoughts:

This was my first book by Dylann Crush and one that I enjoyed. I'm partial to the friends-to-lovers trope and Crush navigated it well. I liked the comfort level between Justin and Emmeline, the familiarity, history, and solid foundation of a lifelong friendship. The transition from friends to lovers may seem sudden in the context of this story but the fact that it was actually years in the making kept it realistic for me. Sometimes, friends are meant to be only friends but there are other situations where deeper feelings that have been simmering for years can suddenly vault to the surface unexpectedly. Knowing this from personal experience, I was able to buy into Emmeline's sudden "awakening" with full conviction. It also makes her initial conflicting feelings and "misunderstanding" about Justin's career plans easier to understand. Both she and Justin need to do some growing before they can claim their HEA. Happily, the author gives them the opportunity to do just that.

Though there are some weighty topics involving both Emmeline's and Justin's families, Crush keeps the story itself from being weighted down. There's emotional depth, yes, but also well-placed humor to keep things balanced along with sizzling chemistry. And then there's Rocky. Who knew a class rock could have so much personality and end up being one of my favorite "characters" in the book?

Justin and Emmeline have found their happy ending but their other two best friends, Knox and Decker are still evolving. Here's hoping their stories will be featured in the next two books of Cowboys in Paradise. I'm already invested and will definitely be returning for the rest of the series.

Do you have a favorite romance trope?

Have you ever been charmed by a non-human character in a romance?

An escaped spider, the unexpected arrival of an Imperial Russian Prince, the senseless assassination of a powerful figure, a shocking attack on the supposedly invincible Warden of Texas, Catalina’s boss... And it’s only Monday.

Within hours, the fate of Houston—not to mention the House of Baylor—now rests on Catalina, who will have to harness her powers as never before. But even with her fellow Prime and fiancé Alessandro Sagredo by her side, she may not be able to expose who’s responsible before all hell really breaks loose.

PJ's Thoughts:

It was worth the wait. So worth the wait!

I loved Catalina and Alessandro! I could fill pages with what I want to say about them and this final story in their journey but every reader should discover its goodness the way I did - one page at a time - so I'll just say this: Questions are answered, bad guys dispatched, love is tested (but holds strong), surprises revealed, and the entire non-stop journey is littered with twists and turns aplenty. I couldn't put it down. Well, okay, so I did put it down (more like dropped my Kindle on my face when I fell asleep) around 2:30 AM but the second I woke up this morning I grabbed that device and didn't stop reading until I reached the final page. No surprise that the first thing I wanted to do was go back to page one and start over a second time. These books are seriously addictive!

I don't know what future plans Ilona Andrews has for the Baylor family or if this is the end of the Hidden Legacy series. (PLEASE, don't let this be the end!!!) There's a new Arabella thread introduced that has me hoping (wishing, praying, not above begging) for another trilogy. Plus, Leon needs a match. And...and...and...I love this family way too much to say goodbye. Not yet!

If you're a Hidden Legacy fan, you probably already have Ruby Fever on pre-order. If you're new to this world, I recommend you begin with Burn for Me (Nevada's trilogy - Book 1) and read the books in order. It's the best way to fully understand these characters, their evolution, their fascinating world, their family dynamic, and the stories that have me reaching for these books to reread time and time again.

The Hidden Legacy books, in order, are:

Nevada's trilogy
Burn for Me
White Hot
Wildfire

Diamond Fire (a novella that connects the two trilogies)

Catalina's trilogy
Sapphire Flames
Emerald Blaze
Ruby Fever
