True to their family name, the Wilders of historic Rustler Mountain, Oregon, have an outlaw lineage and a wild nature to match. But when it comes to love, an untamed heart might know best . . .

Carson Wilder and Perry Bramble have been best friends forever, starting with their painful childhoods. As far as romance, Carson always knew he wasn’t good enough for her. And by the time they were grown, their bond was too important to risk messing up. Now, Carson is grieving the death of his wife. And like always, Perry is his rock. He can’t imagine life without her. But he may have to.

Perry has loved Carson since she was 7 years old. He never showed a hint of interest in her beyond friendship, but two-plus decades later, he’s still the most important person in her life. Maybe too important. Inspired by the diary of an ancestor who left everything behind to come west as a mail order bride, Perry stuns Carson with a decision: She’s moving to a neighboring city to expand her florist business—and to find love and start a family.

Carson hates the idea, but he’ll do anything for Perry’s happiness. He’ll even help get her historic home fixed up for sale. She can stay with him at his ranch house on Outlaw Lake in the meantime. What ensues are dinners filled with laughter, dating app disasters—and Carson wondering why he’d look for another woman when the one he loves is right here. His answers may lie in the letters he finds from the man who married the mail order bride. . . . But can he finally gather the courage to be true to his wild heart—before it's too late?

PJ's Thoughts:

It's not an exaggeration to say that the strong bond between Carson and Perry is what got them through unstable childhoods, teenage confusion, and long-distance separations. It even got them through Carson's ill-advised relationship and Perry's broken heart because of it. Nothing has ever broken their friendship but they've reached a crossroads, at least Perry has. Something has to give and her decision to move away will either be the straw that breaks their bond or the incentive to forge a new path toward happiness, not heartbreak.

Maisey Yates' stories always take me on an emotional journey but Outlaw Lake takes that experience to a new level. So many feelings with these two. They really put me through the wringer. Both Carson and Perry are multi-layered characters with significant emotional baggage. Yates has crafted them beautifully, showing the many layers that impact their choices, their feelings, and their fears. I felt as if I knew each of them personally, experienced their emotional upheavals and struggles with a visceral fierceness, and could not have pulled more strongly for them to make it as a couple. They made it impossible not to invest myself in their happiness with my whole heart.

Each chapter of the book opens with an entry from the diary of Perry's ancestor, a mail-order bride who wed a widower and suffered the same unrequited love that Perry has dealt with for years. The two couples, living more than 100 years apart, share journeys that parallel one another in significant ways with the words of both Mae and her husband opening hearts and minds in present day in unexpected ways. I loved these entries and enjoyed the perspective and rich texture they added to Carson's and Perry's story.

As with book one of this series, Yates surrounds the main couple with family members and local citizens who both support and challenge the lead characters. It was fun getting to know Carson's siblings better (their books are coming) as well as a brother and sister from a rival "outlaw" family in town (I have hopes for both of them!).

If you're looking for a friends-to-lovers, contemporary romance with complex characters, family dynamics, strong emotional depth, and hard-won happy endings, give Outlaw Lake a try. I highly recommend it as well as book one in the series, Rustler Mountain (Carson's brother Austin and Millie, the town librarian - click to read my review).

Only a bad nanny knows what it’s like to kiss the boss.

CEO millionaire Max Fletcher is a single dad in desperate need of a nanny.

Cozy Barlow is in the middle of her self-appointed “gap year” and doing everything she can to detach from her past.

But when her sister begs her to interview for the nanny position of a high-maintenance client, she doesn’t have a good enough reason to say no.

And when Max locks eyes on the twentysomething in tie-dye who pitches the idea of daydreaming all summer, he prepares to give this bad nanny the boot.

One problem: Max’s little girl thinks this "plus-size in body and spirit" nanny might be her new bestie, so she hires her on the spot.

Now Max is stuck with a woman who hates everything he represents—corporate greed, money, status, power.

But one stormy night when the power goes out, he discovers Cozy doesn’t hate him. In fact, he’s the leading role in her fantasies.

Fantasies he would very much like to make a reality.

PJ's Thoughts:

I pretty much smiled through this entire book. I mean, come on, pair a by-the-book, single-dad billionaire with a big-hearted, taking-a-career-break, more-than-she-seems Nanny. Add forced proximity, sparkling banter, sizzling attraction, humor, fun, emotional depth, and steam for days. Then, just for kicks, top it with an 11-year-old matchmaker, meddling brothers and friends, plus growing feelings, and Max and Cozy just might have the perfect recipe for their very own happily ever after.

I prefer to read a series in order. In the case of Last on the List, however, I did things backwards. While this is book five in the Wait with Me series, it is also the prequel to the Mountain Men Matchmaker series. I have not read the first four books in the Wait with Me series and I have read the first three books in the Mountain Men Matchmaker series (which feature Max, Cozy, and Everly as secondary but important characters several years later). I'm happy to say that this did not impair my level of enjoyment one bit. After meeting Max's friends, I will definitely be picking up their books. As far as his "Mountain Men" brothers, it was fun to go back in time and read the origin story of their beloved niece and personal matchmaker, Everly. Wherever you are in the reading order of either series, Last on the List stands well on its own and has my enthusiastic recommendation.

Note: If this book sounds familiar there's a chance you may have read it as an indie digital release.

It was supposed to be just a vacation fling…

43-year-old Beth Dykeman’s life is spiraling—her 20-year marriage is over as is her career in Nashville’s Chamber of Commerce. Now back home in River’s Edge, Indiana, she’s grieving the end of her dream to have a family. Hoping to restart her life, she books a relaxing long weekend at a spa in beautiful Montana. But Beth arrives only to discover she accidentally booked a stay at a working dude ranch in the middle of Marietta’s 87th Copper Mountain Rodeo celebration weekend.

When he’s not competing, 36-year-old bronc rider Del Foster works at the Aspen Springs Ranch. He’s ready to hang up his spurs. This rodeo will be his last competition before he finally settles down and buys his own small spread to train cutting horses.

Their instant chemistry shocks them both, and on her last night, Beth indulges the attraction, knowing she’ll never see Del again. But fate has a way of changing plans and challenging assumptions. Can Beth and Del both have what they never knew they always wanted?

PJ's Thoughts:

Whether the book is set in charming River's Edge, Indiana or under the wide open skies of Montana, if it's written by Nan Reinhardt it's on my must-read list. Sometimes, a mistake isn't just a mistake. Sometimes, it's an opportunity to take a new path. Beth is adrift after the end of her 20-year marriage. Del is struggling with a close friend's devastating rodeo injury as well as when - and how - to end his own successful rodeo career. A booking error lands them together on a Montana ranch and a journey of healing, growth, self-discovery, and love follows. Reinhardt packs this book with an immersive setting, multi-layered characters, relatable issues, and a realistic happy ending. I laughed and cried (this author's characters always tug at my heartstrings) before turning the final page with a happy, heartfelt sigh. If you're looking for a feel-good western romance with heart, humor, and emotional depth, give Forever Cowboy a try. I hope Nan Reinhardt has plans for more Montana books because while I love her River's Edge community (and fingers crossed for more books there), I am all in with her new Montana community of characters too!

While Forever Cowboy is listed as book four, it's a standalone story in a multi-author series. You'll be fine jumping in here or at any other point in the series.

Em
meline Chase, 25-year-old widow and new alumna, may be more high-spirited than the Academy would like. Few graduates, however, could turn a mismanaged teleportation onto a duke’s rooftop into an offer of employment. But Emmeline’s circumstances, along with her desperation to support her bankrupt, incarcerated father, have made her dauntless. Which seems the primary qualification to work for expert horologist Xavier Mason, Duke of St. Lawrence, and manage his three rambunctious wards. Yet Emmeline soon discovers that the nobleman’s heart-melting voice and captivating mind present an entirely different sort of trouble. She cannot risk losing her license by fraternizing with her employer . . .

Xavier’s wards have sent two nannies packing in a month thanks to frogs, firecrackers, and general mayhem. In addition, Xavier’s professional reputation is on the line. He’s already considered odd, with his talking raven companion and his fascination with timekeeping instead of pleasure-chasing with his peers. Charming, vivacious Emmeline seems intrigued with his quirks—but Xavier must have absolute peace to design London’s “King of Clocks” for Westminster Palace before the competition closes. Emmeline can no doubt restore order. As long as he doesn’t fall under her spell . . .

Yet, with a possible saboteur in their midst, and the attraction flaring between them threatening to become a deliciously disastrous distraction, a touch of magic may be required . . .

PJ's Thoughts:

I can't be the only person who found herself humming A Spoonful of Sugar while reading this absolute delight of a book. The touch of magic found in Nanny Chase's pockets only amplifies all the facets that kept me happily turning pages from start to finish.

Bennett's first installment in her The Parasol Academy series has me eagerly awaiting all future books. Her characters are beautifully drawn and so well developed. I felt as if I knew Emmeline, Xavier, and all three children personally. I loved that each of them was given the time and care necessary for a true and complete depiction of their individual personalities.

Xavier, in particular, was a character I found especially well crafted. In today's world, he would most likely be diagnosed on the Autism spectrum. Making a neurodiverse character not only authentic but also relatable can be a difficult task but I felt Bennett accomplished it beautifully, including his evolving relationships with not only Emmeline but also his three wards.

The mystery element of the story was well done and kept me guessing right up until the reveal. While I thought I knew how that part of the book would play out, the author had a twist up her sleeve that I did not anticipate. I love when that happens.

This first book in Amy Rose Bennett's The Parasol Academy series has my enthusiastic recommendation. I'm already looking forward to the next book in this series and am eager to discover what magical - and romantic - surprises await.

A prince bound by duty. A commoner who knows her place. Can they find a future for their forbidden passion?

After his cousin is kidnapped and tortured in his stead, Prince Raul works himself mercilessly so he can be worthy of such a sacrifice. When he collapses from exhaustion at a public ceremony, the prince is forced to take a vacation. He reluctantly finds refuge in the mountains, guided by a strong woman whose warmth and understanding dispel the shadows of his guilt.

Erica Ortiz has never felt good enough. Wrestling with the weight of her father’s disapproval, she pushes herself to reach greater heights as a pilot and a part-time wilderness guide. But she never expected to be responsible for the crown prince’s safety on a towering mountain cliff—or to share his innermost secrets.

While Erica battles her growing love for the fascinating, tortured prince, Raul realizes that his feelings for her have grown too powerful to control. He can never offer her the forever she deserves. The heir to the throne and a commoner can never marry.

When they join together for a desperate rescue mission, can they tear down the barriers that threaten to destroy their love?

PJ's Thoughts:
Nancy Herkness returns to the lush island of Caleva with a new story brimming with adventure, emotional baggage, family dynamics, cross-class romance, and a whole lot of steam.
While Raul is an important secondary character in the first two books of this series, it's only in this third book that we delve beneath the surface and really learn what drives the man. Learning how the after-effects of the kidnapping of his cousin have impacted Raul exposes a character who is much more complex than I had guessed.
Erica is new to the Caleva universe. As a commoner, she would ordinarily never spend private time with the royal prince but as the private pilot to his cousin who also has wilderness skills, she's the perfect person to guide him when he's forced to take a vacation. I enjoyed her character. She also has many layers as well as emotional baggage to unpack. Watching her tackle those emotional obstacles as well as her growing feelings for Raul was a pleasure.
The chemistry between Raul and Erica is explosive - readers should expect a high level of heat in this book - but they should also expect emotional depth. As I said above, these two have a significant amount of baggage to sort through and while the emotional weight is significant, it never felt too weighty or angsty to me. The ratio of emotion to steam to adventure maintains a good balance that kept me invested and eagerly turning pages.
As with the other books in the series, there's also a bit of mystery in this one that brings action and adventure to the story. Herkness had me on the edge of my seat with this aspect of the book, wondering how it would all play out. Happy to say I was not disappointed!
I don't know if Herkness has more books planned for this beautiful island but I hope she does. They would definitely be on my must-buy list.

PJ's Birthday Giveaway #10

Julie Anne Long

After Dark with the Duke

Last but never least, Julie Anne Long is not only one of my all-time favorite authors but she also shares my birthday! I couldn't possibly have a birthday giveaway and not include at least one of her books.

After Dark with the Duke is a book that took my breath away (read my Top Dish review). When I was almost midway through reading, I sent a text to the author and when I turned the final page I sent her the one below:

"I am ruined. Totally, completely, utterly ruined. Do you know how many books I have in my read/review queue? How am I supposed to read them now? All I want to do is simmer in the stunningly beautiful, all-encompassing emotion of this book, of these characters. I can't just move on to something else. This is my favorite book this year. It's my favorite book of ALL the books you've written - - and I've read every single one of them. I might as well change the name of my review to "gush fest" because that's exactly what it's going to be. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. But, seriously, RUINED!"

When you find an author whose words have this kind of an impact, you buy every book she's written that you can get your hands on and every new book that's published. Yes, she does have her own keeper shelves (plural) in my home library.

Here's the blurb for After Dark with the Duke:

After Dark with the Duke
by Julie Anne Long

She arrives in the dead of night, a mob out for blood at her heels: Mariana Wylde, the “Harlot of Haywood Street,” an opera diva brought low by a duel fought for her favors. But the ladies of the Grand Palace on the Thames think they can make a silk purse from scandal: They’ll restore her reputation and share in her triumph...provided they can keep her apart from that other guest.

Coldly brilliant, fiercely honorable, General James Duncan Blackmore, the Duke of Valkirk, is revered, feared, desired...but nobody truly knows him. Until a clash with a fiery, vulnerable beauty who stands for everything he scorns lays him bare. It’s too clear the only cure for consuming desire is conquest, but their only chance at happiness could lead to their destruction.

The legendary duke never dreamed love would be his last battleground. Valkirk would lay down his life for Mariana, but his choice is stark: risk losing her forever, or do the one thing he vowed he never would...surrender.

The Second First Chance

Mona Shroff is an absolute delight. I had the opportunity to meet her at two events this year and had the best time chatting with her about books and life. Her books are engaging, often messy, romantic, and filled with relatable emotional depth. I knew I wanted to share them with you so I made sure I came home from the last event with a signed copy of The Second First Chance. Yes, it's a second-chance romance and yes, it has an emotional, hard-won, happy ending. Here's the blurb:

Strength comes in many different forms.

Riya Desai and Dhillon Vora grew up together. Sharing secrets, hiding in their tree house, they were playmates, best friends and later—as teenagers—almost something more. Until the devastating house fire that ripped them apart, claiming the life of Dhillon’s father and Riya’s big brother, Samir. Riya and Dhillon have barely spoken since that terrible night, but they both made big decisions based on that fire.

Riya has chosen to fight fire with everything she’s got, but it’s not easy. As the only female firefighter and one of the only people of color at her fire hall, she has to prove herself over and over. Plus, she’s hidden her career from her family.

Dhillon wanted to heal things, so he became a veterinarian. When a chance encounter with a rescue dog throws Riya and Dhillon together again, he’s furious at her career choice. After what happened to them, how can she run into fires on purpose? For Riya, Dhillon’s anger is unacceptable: How can he not see that she’s protecting others from the very losses they both experienced?

PJ's Birthday Giveaway #8 - - Roxanne St. Claire

PJ's Birthday Giveaway #8

Roxanne St. Claire

Hush, Puppy

I've been reading books written by Roxanne St. Claire for more than twenty years. Seventeen years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting her in person for the first time after winning a book from her and discovering from the return address that she lived around the corner from relatives I visited a few months later. No, I did not surprise her by showing up on her doorstep uninvited. Yes, she did invite me to get together. :)

In the years that have passed since that first meeting, I have followed her from steamy romantic suspense to sensual contemporary romance to a feel-good contemporary series featuring a big, loving Irish-American family and rescue dogs to an offshoot series featuring two matchmaking grannies and more dogs. Her books never fail to engage my emotions, make me laugh, and give me a happy, heartfelt HEA.

The book I'm giving away today is Hush, Puppy (read my review), a 5-star read about which I said in my review, "This book is everything I wanted, everything I needed. It's sweet, funny, deeply emotional, and so doggone good that it left my heart overflowing with joy. So much so, that as soon as I turned the final page all I wanted to do was go back to the beginning and read it all over again."  Hush, Puppy is book five in The Dogmothers series which is described by St. Claire as follows: "Two matchmaking grannies are opposites in life but lined up on love. One has the steel spine of a Greek warrior, the other the heart of an Irish poet. Together, along with a duo of darling dachshunds, these two won’t stop until all their grandchildren are hooked, hitched, and happy."

Hush, Puppy
by Roxanne St. Claire

John Santorini faces a whirlwind summer. Juggling business woes and troubles at his Greek restaurant, his world shifts when a lively little girl takes a liking to his mischievous new puppy at the park. Things get even more complicated when his grandmother insists he spend time with the little girl’s beautiful single mom, a young widow who’s new to Bitter Bark.

Summer Jackson might have come to Bitter Bark to find someone from her past, but an unexpected encounter with a charismatic dog owner has her thinking about the future. She’s enchanted by John’s warmth, especially when his puppy helps fix her daughter’s struggle with a stutter. But when shadows from the past threaten their new love, will John have to settle for a Summer fling…or do the Dogmothers have the recipe for romance one more time?

There's Something About Mira

I've been a fan of Sonali Dev's books since her debut novel was published in 2014. I've read them all. I've loved them all. But, even in the exalted company of her many 5-star reads, there's something special about There's Something About Mira. It kept me reading until 3:00 AM, earned a Top Dish rating (read my review), and even now, seven months after finishing this story, I'm still thinking about the characters. If you enjoy a beautifully nuanced story about parental expectations, social issues, fate, finding yourself, and opening your heart to both love for yourself and the love others choose for themselves, you'll want to read There's Something About Mira too.

There's Something About Mira
by Sonali Dev

Mira Salvi has the perfect life—a job she loves, a fiancé everyone adores, and the secure future she’s always imagined for herself. Really, she hasn’t a thing to complain about, not even when she has to go on her engagement trip to New York alone.

While playing tourist in the city, Mira chances upon a lost ring, and her social media post to locate its owner goes viral. With everyone trying to claim the ring, only one person seems to want to find its owner as badly as Mira does: journalist Krish Hale. Brooding and arrogant, he will do anything to get to write this story.

As Krish and Mira reluctantly join forces and jump into the adventure of tracing the ring back to where it belongs, Mira begins to wonder if she is in the right place in her own life. She had to have found this ring for a reason…right? Maybe, like the owner of the lost ring, her happy ending hasn’t been written yet either.

Magical Meet Cute

I haven't met Jean Meltzer in person but she's an author whose books I enjoy reading. Her romcoms are well crafted, with well developed, engaging characters, strong Jewish representation, and, in the case of Magical Meet Cute, some magical realism as well. Hellie reviewed this title for the blog, giving it our highest Top Dish rating (click to read) and saying, "The premise is a hoot and a treat - and I thirstily read this book down like the cool drink of lemonade, sweet and tart and refreshing, that it is." Here's the blurb for Magical Meet Cute:

Magical Meet Cute
by Jean Meltzer

Is he the real deal…or did she truly summon a golem?

Faye Kaplan used to be engaged. She also used to have a successful legal practice. But she much prefers her new life as a potter in Woodstock, New York. The only thing missing is the perfect guy.

Not that she
needs one. She’s definitely happy alone.

That is, until she finds her town papered with anti-Semitic flyers after yet another failed singles event at the synagogue. Desperate for comfort, Faye drunkenly turns to the only thing guaranteed to soothe her—pottery. A golem protector is just what her town needs…and adding all the little details to make him her ideal man can’t hurt, right?

When a seriously hot stranger mysteriously turns up the next day, Greg seems too good to be true—if you ignore the fact that Faye hit him with her bike. And that he subsequently lost his memory…

But otherwise, the man checks Every. Single. Box. Causing Faye to wonder if Greg’s sudden and spicy appearance might be anything but a coincidence.
