PJ's Birthday Bash - - Debbie Mason

I'm delighted to welcome one of my favorite small-town contemporary romance authors to TRD! I first discovered Debbie in 2010 (writing as Debbie Mazzuca) when I fell in love with her debut, a Scottish historical paranormal romance titled Lord of the Isles. Two years ago, she changed her pen name to Debbie Mason and her writing to contemporary romance, introducing readers to the lively residents of the mountain town of Christmas, Colorado with the release of The Trouble With Christmas. That first book was all it took to reel me into this quaint town with its heartwarming stories, occasional danger, and cast of quirky characters. Five books later, I still look forward to each new story with joyful anticipation. Today, Debbie is bringing us a new scene from Christmas, written just for us, starring the lead characters from her new book, Snowbound at Christmas. Thank you, Debbie!

Christmas, Colorado
Present Day

Cat walked toward the man sitting in front of the outdoor brick fireplace. Grayson turned his head and gave her a smile that made her knees weak and her heart flutter.
            "How long do you think we have before they figure out we're not there?" he asked, as she settled in the chair beside him.
            She spread the blanket over them and glanced at the kitchen window. "Ten minutes, if we're lucky."
            "We better make the most of it then," he said, opening his hand to reveal a sprig of mistletoe. He waggled his eyebrows and held it over their heads.
            She laughed and curved her hand around his neck, drawing his mouth to hers. "I like the way--"
            "Time for the birthday cake, you two. You can go back to canoodling later." Nell's voice cut through the cold night air.
            Grayson groaned against Cat's lips. "That wasn't even ten seconds."
            Cat felt like groaning too, but she didn't want to miss her niece's reaction to her first birthday cake. "Leave everything here. We'll come back as soon we're done. Promise," she said when Grayson gave her a skeptical look.
            The first thing Cat noticed as they walked into the great room was the bearskin rug in front of the floor-to-ceiling fireplace. Her sister-in-law Skye was an animal rights activist. With today's excitement, they hadn't had time to hide the rug when her brother and his family arrived at the ranch. They'd taken turns sitting on it to keep it concealed, but someone had obviously fallen down on the job. Thankfully, Skye was nowhere in sight.
             Cat, with Grayson in tow, made a beeline for the rug. She pulled Ty and Annie down with them. Her brother, who was sitting on a wingback chair with Evie on his lap, frowned. Then his eyes went wide when he realized what they were hiding. He opened his mouth but didn't get a chance to say anything because his wife, wearing a sparkly purple dress, lilac wings, and a cupcake tiara on her head, walked into the room carrying a sugar plum cake and singing "Happy Birthday." They all joined in, laughing when Evie squealed with delight and grabbed two fistfuls of cake. Which she promptly tried to shove in her father's mouth.
            Cat's mother and her stepfather retrieved the cake while Skye attempted to cleanup Evie and Ethan. Grayson leaned into Cat. "Why is she dressed like that?"
            "She's the Sugar Plum Cake Fairy."
            "Of course she is," he said, looking like he thought he'd fallen down the rabbit's hole.
            "Madison came up with the idea. She's a silent partner in the Sugar Plum Bakery. Grace's cake is pretty famous now," Cat explained.
            "Because it comes with its own fairy?" he asked with a glint of amusement in his pale-blue eyes.
            "No, because the wishes in the chocolate sugarplum come true. Maybe you'll get one," she said, nodding at the piece of cake her mother had just handed him.
            "Other than some time alone with you tonight, I got my wish, love."
            She kissed the underside of his stubbled jaw. "Me too."
            "Make mine a big one, Mommsy," Chloe called from where she sat between Nell and Easton on the couch. "I want to increase my chances for a sugarplum wish."
            Easton cast a nervous glance at Chloe, no doubt concerned he was the reason her sister wanted a wish. Nell must have been as nervous as Easton because, a few minutes later, she nudged Chloe and whispered in her ear. As soon as Chloe turned her head, Nell switched her piece of cake with Chloe's. "Would you look at that, I got a chocolate sugarplum," Nell announced seconds later.
            Chloe looked at her plate and frowned. "My piece of cake shrunk." She narrowed her eyes at Nell who was opening the sugarplum.
            The older woman pulled out a thin strip of paper.
            "What does it say, Aunt Nell?" Cat's stepfather, Paul McBride, asked.
            Lips pursed, Nell cast Chloe a sidelong glance. "That my match has been made in heaven, and I'll get my happy-ever-after very soon."
            Chloe released a disheartened sigh, then went back to her cake. A moment later she cried, "I've got one too!"
            Both Nell's and Easton's panicked gazes shot to Chloe.
            Her sister frowned as she read her sugarplum wish. "I think Grace made a mistake. This is a birthday wish for someone named PJ."
            Everyone was trying to figure out who PJ was when Nell snapped her fingers. "I know a PJ. Debbie talks about her all the time," she said, referring to the co-author for her Christmas, Colorado romance series. "Says she's one of the sweetest ladies she's ever met. Besides me, of course. PJ has a romance review blog, the Romance Dish, and always has nice things to say about our town and you kids. But I thought her birthday was in September, so it's a little late . . . Wait a minute, Cat and Grayson's book is releasing next September. We can--"
            "Am I ever going to get a book, Nell?" Chloe asked.
            Nell ignored her. "Come on, everybody. Let's take a picture for PJ by the tree. We'll send it along with a copy of Snowbound at Christmas."
            Ethan widened his eyes at Grayson and Cat, nodding at the rug.
            Grayson dug in his pocket, pulled out the sprig of mistletoe, and tossed it to her brother. While Ethan distracted his wife with a kiss, Grayson and Cat scooped up the bearskin rug. When they returned from throwing it out the patio doors, Annie, Ty, and Lily were kneeling on the floor making a sign. Her sister was hunting through the presents under the tree.
            Cat walked over to Chloe. "What are you doing?"
            "I bought Evie a fur coat for Christmas," she whispered, then stood up as everyone crowded around the tree. She brightened. "I'll put your name on the card instead of mine. Skye will forgive you. She likes you better."
            Before Cat had a chance to respond, Nell held up her cell phone and made a face. "We need one of those selfie sticks."
            "I have one," Chloe said and started to walk to away.
            "Of course you do," Easton muttered.
            Anxious to get back to canoodling with the man she loved, Cat grabbed her sister's gold lame top and reeled her in. "Let's just take the picture."
            They all squeezed together and smiled for the camera while Annie and Lily held up a sign that read Happy Birthday, PJ!
            Nell snapped the picture. She had to take three more before Chloe was satisfied with how she looked.
            When everyone finally began moving away from the tree, Cat grabbed Grayson's hand. They sprinted for the mudroom and headed outside, then stopped short. Her mother and Paul were sitting in their chairs, kissing under the mistletoe.
            Grayson looked down at her, then leaned back and opened the door. "Hey everybody, NORAD just announced that Santa's flying over Colorado. Come on out and see if we can spot him." Once they were all gathered outside looking up at the night sky, Grayson pulled Cat inside and locked the door behind them.

Awww... Thank you, Debbie! That was awesome!

PJ's Birthday Bash - - Anna Campbell

How could I have a Happy Birthday Bash without Anna Campbell? Well, the simple truth is, I can't! Even though I'd much rather be clinking glasses in person, the next best thing is welcoming my wonderful friend (the real wonder from down under!) to today's birthday bash here at TRD!

Always a voracious reader, Anna Campbell decided when she was a child that she wanted to be a writer. Once she discovered the wonderful world of romance novels, she knew exactly what she wanted to write. Anna has won numerous awards for her historical romances, including the RT Book Reviews Reviewers' Choice, the Booksellers' Best, the Golden Quill (three times), the Heart of Excellence, the Aspen Gold (twice), and the Australian Romance Readers Association's most popular historical romance (five times). Her books have twice been nominated for Romance Writers of America's prestigious RITA Award and three times for Romance Writers of Australia's Romantic Book of the Year.

When she's not writing passionate, intense stories featuring gorgeous Regency heroes and the women who are their destiny, Anna loves to travel, especially in the United Kingdom, and listen to all kinds of music. She lives near the sea on the east coast of Australia, where she's losing her battle with an overgrown subtropical garden. Connect with Anna online at:

Hi PJ! Thank you so much for asking me to share in your birthday celebrations. And happy birthday!!!  You’re one of my favorite people so I think they should declare PJ Day and make it a worldwide public holiday!  Anything less doesn’t do you justice.

And how very generous of you to make your birthday week a chance to give other people presents! Perhaps we should make PJ Day, PJ month!!!

My present for PJ and her Romance Dish gals is a sneak peek at my new novella A Pirate for Christmas which I’m currently writing and plan to release on 1st November. This will be the first
We do love our pirates!
time my dashing buccaneer Rory (who isn’t really a pirate, but a heroic captain of the Royal Navy) will appear in public. The new Lord Channing is very much looking forward to dancing a jig with PJ at her birthday party.

And my, don’t you just love a man in uniform?

Here’s the blurb:

Pursued by the pirate…
Bess Farrar might be an innocent village miss from an isolated corner of wildest Northumberland, but she knows enough about the world to doubt Lord Channing’s motives when he kisses her the very day they meet. After all, local gossip insists that before this dashing rake became an earl, he sailed the Seven Seas as a ruthless pirate.

Bewitched by the vicar’s daughter…
Until he unexpectedly inherits a title, unswervingly honorable Scotsman Rory Beaton has devoted his adventurous life to the Royal Navy. But all bets are off after he meets spirited Bess Farrar. Now this daring mariner will do whatever it takes to convince the lovely, headstrong lassie to launch herself into his arms and set sail into the sunset.

A Christmas marked by mayhem.
Wooing his headstrong lady, the new Earl of Channing finds himself embroiled with matchmaking villagers, an eccentric vicar, mistaken identities, a snowstorm, scandal, and a rascally donkey. Life at sea was never this exciting. The gallant captain’s first landlocked Christmas promises confusion, highjinks, danger, and passion – and a breathtaking chance to win the love of a lifetime.

And here’s the exclusive excerpt.

When vicar’s daughter, Bess Farrar beards the elusive new lord of the manor in his library at Preston Abbey to obtain permission to borrow Daisy the donkey for the annual nativity play, she has no idea what fate has in store:

That lush mouth, a promise of passion if Rory had ever seen one, set in a mutinous line, and she regarded him from across the room like a strange  and potentially dangerous new species. “You’re a very unusual man, Lord Channing.”

He smiled at this outspoken lassie with utter delight. “You have no idea, Miss Farrar.”

“Is it because you’re a pirate?”

For a moment there, he’d felt in control of the situation. The feeling had been fleeting. He stopped on his way to the library door and stared at her in astonishment. “What on earth did you say?”

She looked slightly shamefaced and made an apologetic gesture with one hand. “I’m sorry. Perhaps you don’t like people to mention your former occupation.”

“My former occupation,” he repeated very slowly. “As a pirate.”

“The story’s all over the village.”

“Aye?”

“You must have expected people to talk about you. And given you’ve been such a recluse since your arrival a month ago, it’s inevitable that rumors are flying.”

“Inevitable rumors.” Rory paused. “That I’m a pirate.”

She studied him and devil take her, understanding filled her lovely face. “Seeing you were free to take up the title, I imagine that you’ve reformed.”

“I wouldn’t be too sure about that.”

She eyed him uncertainly, but plowed on. He commended her determination. “There’s no need to feel embarrassed about your past crimes, my lord. Here at Preston Wyck, we tend to take people as we find them.”

“Is that right?”

“Yes.” Her tone firmed. “When we do find them.”

He sighed and ran his hand through his hair. “You’re about to start nagging again. I feel it in my piratical bones.”

~~~~~~~~~~
As you can probably tell, I’m having nearly as much fun writing this as I’d have at a birthday party for PJ! (and PJ is having a whole lot of fun reading it!)
Because A Pirate for Christmas is currently a lot of handwriting in a notebook, I can’t offer that particular story as today’s prize. Instead, I’ll pick two people from the commenters and they’ll win Kindle downloads of both my other 2015 novellas,Three Proposals and a Scandal and The Seduction of Lord Stone.
Giveaway is international including North America. So to make it clear, today’s prize is 2 x 2 novellas! Good luck!
So let’s talk pirates! Do you have a favorite pirate in film or fiction? I’ve got to admit a fondness for that rascally Aussie Errol Flynn who was extremely dashing swinging from the rigging in Captain Blood.
And PJ, wishing you smooth sailing for the coming year and a fabulous birthday to launch your voyage!
Thank you, Anna! Having you here to help me celebrate means a lot to me.
Readers, in addition to Anna's giveaway, I'm also giving away a package of books from my prize stash! (U.S. only)
Be sure to check out Anna's new novellas below. I loved both of them!
Elizabeth now spends her days creating plots and concocting characters at her home in a small lake-side town in North Carolina. When she is not typing as fast as human movement will allow, she is caring for her husband and little boy. Happy Birthday from THE REBEL HEIR and Elizabeth Michels
Bristol, England
1817
“All you have to do is blow out this candle,” Ash said, producing one of the small tapers from his pocket with a flourish and a smile just as he always did.
Whether he was selling love potions to ladies or investment opportunities to gentlemen, a smile and some showmanship always helped matters along.  And matters needed to be helped along if he was to be on the road out of town tonight.  He glanced to the clock on the drawing room mantle.  Dinner had already been a lengthy affair, but he hadn’t been able to refuse the invitation with so many local gentry gathered in one place for the night.
“That’s all?” One of the ladies who had gathered around him asked, her eyes wide in disbelief…or perhaps that was anticipation.  It was difficult to tell when she wore such thick spectacles.  “I’ll look young forever?”  She added in a soft dream-like voice.
“Is it a magic candle?” Another lady asked as she stepped closer to investigate.  Her gaze was trained on the small piece of wax he held between his fingers.
“Some believe so, my lady.” He spoke only to her although five other ladies leaned in to hear every word.  “I discovered the secrets of the flames of Claughbania when I was on a distant isle.  The women there were all young and beautiful—much like present company.”
He paused to scan the group, noticing the round of blushes just before several fans were put into motion.  “I lived with the native people for three months in quite rustic conditions, everyday asking for their secret to everlasting youth.  And every day I was denied the answers I sought.  Until finally, one long, sleepless night, I went for a walk and found a man sitting before a fire.  He was an elder and he shared with me the very candles I have with me today.”
He looked into each of their faces, waiting to continue his story for dramatic effect and taking in their believing looks of awe.  That was when he caught sight of the dark haired gentleman across the room he’d met at dinner.  That man was traveling through town just like Ash, only St. James was from London.  One day, Ash would return to London as well, but certainly not any time soon.  St. James was watching him with a thoughtful gleam in his eye.  Everything about that man screamed mysterious and that was coming from someone who was currently selling candles of eternal youth to a group of hopeful ladies in a stranger’s drawing room.
Ash held the candle up as he continued.  “The wax was melted in the flames of Claughbania- a vicious volcano on the isle said to hold the spirit of a beautiful Greek goddess.  The wick, well that’s a secret I swore to keep forever.  If I told you, I would be putting my own life at risk.”
“Oh dear! Don’t do that Lord Crosby!” One lady cried even as she batted her lashes at him.
“I agree,” another lady added.  “You can’t endanger yourself in such a manner.  What would we do without you?”
“I appreciate your concern,” Ash said with a grin.  “Now, as it happens, I have only six of these candles left in my possession and for five pounds one could be yours.  But you must purchase it tonight.”
“Why tonight?”
Ash lowered his voice as if telling a grave secret.  “It must be extinguished by the light of a waning moon.”
“Oh, that is interesting.”
“Isn’t the moon tonight waxing?”  Ash heard a deeper voice ask.
He looked up to see St. James.  The man had moved across the room to lean on the mantle only a few steps away.  Ash tensed, but didn’t allow his annoyance to show in his face.  “That’s what I said—the light of a waxing moon.”
He lowered his gaze back to the ladies who surrounded him, determined to finish the business that brought him here this evening.  “Eternal beauty could be yours tonight.  Imagine looking young forever.”
“I’ll take one,” one lady demanded.
“As will I.”
“Thank you for your business,” he murmured as he passed around the candles and lined his pockets with their pin money, ignoring St. James who was watching the transaction with interest rather than stopping it.  He didn’t know what that man was about, but the faster he left this place, the more at ease he would be.  He smiled down at the last lady as he handed her the small candle.  “You’ll wake tomorrow with the shining looks of a twenty year old.”
“Thank you, Lord Crosby.”
“Anything for you ladies.  And happy birthday.”  He nodded to their hostess for the evening before moving away, finally able to shoot St. James with the glare he’d kept hidden for the last ten minutes.
“The Flames of Claughbania?” St. James asked in a whisper as he followed Ash across the room.  “If your brothers ever discover you used the good name of Claughbane to sell candles you purchased in the next village over…”
Ash spun on his heel to face the man.  He’d buried his past long ago and had never looked back.  How did this man know?  Bluff—that was the only way out of this alive.  “They’re candles of eternal youth.”
“Clearly.  And if your brothers ever hear of this they will burn you alive in the volcano you just invented.”  St. James’ voice was low enough not to be overheard, which coincidentally made the man sound lethal.  Perhaps he was lethal—to a man like Ash anyway.
“How do you know of my family?” Ash ground out through teeth clinched into some form of a smile.
“I know a great many things, Mr. Ash Claughbane of the Isle of Man.  You’re the youngest of four and your eldest brother recently inherited a dukedom.  Yet you spend your time…”  St. James broke off with a glance over his shoulder to the ladies still gathered near the fireplace.
“If my brother sent you, you can save your speech about being honorable.”
“No one sends me anywhere,” St. James corrected.
Ash studied him for a second before asking, “Who are you?”
“If you’re ever in London, come see me.” St. James slid a calling card into Ash’s hand.  There printed in black embossed type was The Spare Heirs’ Society with an address printed below.
“What is The Spare…”  Ash began but when he looked up, St. James was already moving toward the door.
London and a society of any sort?  Ash had been on his own too long to be interested in that.  Yet he found himself following after St. James and stuffing the card into his pocket.  Perhaps it was time to return to London after all…
Happy Birthday, PJ! Do you know where we could find some candles of eternal youth for our birthday cakes this year?
I don't, Elizabeth but I'll sure let you know if I do! Thank you for the sneak peek into your new world of spare heirs. I have March 1st marked on my 2016 calendar!
What do you say, readers? How do you keep young? Is it a matter of diet? Exercise? Attitude? Reading lots of romance novels? Let's dish!
PJ's Birthday Bash - - Patience Griffin
I love birthdays! For those of you who are Dish regulars, this will not come as a surprise. In fact, I love them so much that I decided to extend this year's celebration beyond the actual day (yesterday) to the whole week. Every day a different author will join the celebration with a special post and every day I'll have giveaways!
Today's birthday guest is one of my favorite new authors, Patience Griffin. Patience's debut contemporary romance, To Scotland With Love was a double RITA finalist this year and one of my favorite books of 2014. She now has three published books in her Scotland-set Kilts and Quilts series and is currently in Scotland (le sigh) working on more. Here for your enjoyment is a new, original, scene starring Graham and Cait Buchanan, the hero and heroine from To Scotland With Love along with a favorite secondary character, Cait's grandmother, Deydie and a couple "new" faces. Thank you, Patience. I love it!
~PJ
PJ gasped as the taxi made its way down the bluff and she caught sight of her home for the next four days. It was more beautiful than she imagined when she’d booked the Kilts and Quilt retreat online—a special birthday present she’d given herself.
Down below was Gandiegow, the perfect Scottish village wedged between the vast North Sea and the bluff they were descending. Gandiegow only had sixty-three cottages and was known for three things: commercial fishing, being the hometown of Graham Buchanan, the famous BBC actor, and of course, the Kilts and Quilts retreat for quilters.
As the taxi pulled into the parking lot, PJ’s stomach did the Highland jig. Yes, she was two hours late. Yes, she should’ve built more time into her schedule to get here. But she had made it. She paid the driver, scooted out of the car, and pulled on her Michael Kors backpack, ready for her adventure. Three minutes later, she was rolling her bag into town with a map of the village in her hand and couldn’t stop smiling. She wondered how she would be received.
Quilting Central was easy to find among the scant row of businesses with its Nine-Patch sign hanging out front. As PJ opened the door, a bell above her jingled. At the same time, her nose was tantalized with the most wonderful smell of beef—stew perhaps. The room came alive, all the women jumping up at once, and rushing toward her. She glanced around, wondering if someone important had entered the room, like Graham. But he wasn’t behind her so she braced herself.
An old portly woman barely five feet tall reached her first and grabbed her arm. “Happy birthday, lass! I’m Deydie. We were wondering if ye were ever going to get here.” She motioned to the others. “I let them go ahead and eat, but I saved ye some of my special birthday stew.”
PJ was confused. “How did ye know it was my birthday? I didn’t tell anyone.”
Another woman joined Deydie, just as old but tall and thin. “Yere friend told us. I’m Bethia.”
“What friend?” PJ scanned the room, but didn’t see anyone she knew.
Deydie looked around. “Where did she go? The one with the funny name.” As if Deydie wasn’t a bit strange for a name as well.
The door to the restroom opened and out walked Janga. Janga?
“What are you doing here?” PJ exclaimed.
Janga rushed forward and gave her a quick hug. “I wanted to surprise you.”
“Well, you did. It’s wonderful.”
“Yes, but me being here is only half of the surprise.”
“Really? What are you up to?”
Janga looked like a near relative of the Cheshire Cat. “Cait, come here. I want you to meet PJ.”
A thirty-something woman with a nice smile joined them. “Hi. It’s lovely to meet ye.” Her accent wasn’t completely Scottish, but she definitely had mischief in her eyes, too. She winked at Janga.
“Now?”
“Yes, now,” Janga said.
“Now, what?” PJ didn’t get to say anymore.
Deydie tugged on PJ’s arm. “Go get yere stew. Now.”
“But I want to know what’s going on.”
“Don’t worry yere pretty arse about it. The bowls and spoons are there as they should be. We’ve been waiting to cut the cake until after ye ate. Now, get to it.”
PJ did as she was told, filling a bowl, and then walking it over to where Janga sat with Cait, the two of them whispering.
“Come on,” PJ half-whined. “It is me.  And you know I don’t do well with surprises. Especially when I know one is coming and I have to wait.”
“Be patient,” Janga laughed.
The bell over the door jingled. All eyes moved in that direction, including PJ’s. When tall, dark, and gorgeous Graham Buchanan strolled through with a rose in his hand, she barely restrained herself from rushing him the way the quilting ladies nearly tackled her. Graham seemed to be looking for someone, and when his gaze fell on Cait, it dawned on PJ who Cait was.
“You’re Cait Buchanan!” PJ gaped at the luckiest woman in the world, married to the most swoon-worthy man on the planet.
“Aye.” Cait smiled, her eyes still on her husband. Weirdly, she tilted her head to the side in PJ’s direction.
As Graham made his way over, PJ was worried she might stop breathing. Although, it might not be awful if she passed out, maybe Graham would give her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. It took her a moment to realize he was smiling at her now!
He walked to her, holding out the rose. “For you,” he said in his wonderful Scottish burr that PJ knew and loved from his movies that she’d watched at least twice.
PJ latched onto Janga’s arm so she wouldn’t fall out of her chair. Was it wrong to lust after a man when his wife was sitting not one foot away on the other side of her? Nah. Hers was only a movie star crush. She could tell, the way his eyes kept flitting to his wife’s that what they had was the real deal.
PJ took the rose. “Thank you.” Her voice sounded like it had been filtered through sandpaper.
Graham leaned down and planted a kiss on her cheek. “Happy birthday, PJ. Enjoy yere stay in Gandiegow. The best place in the world.”
PJ couldn’t move. She could only soak up the moment. Graham Buchanan kissed me! Like the kiss had been a cue, the quilting ladies started singing the traditional song while Bethia carried a candle-lit cake in her direction.
PJ turned to Janga and squeezed her hand. “I don’t know how you pulled this off, but this is the best birthday ever!”
In the delightful new Kilts and Quilts novel by the author of To Scotland with Love andMeet Me in Scotland, the Real Men of Scotland are waiting. And it’s a match made in Gandiegow…
Kit Woodhouse’s matchmaking business is such a success, she’s expanding to the Highlands of Scotland where the hot, prosperous, and kilted are anxious to connect. Now, looking to fill her stable with eligible bachelors, Kit’s arrived in Gandiegow to recruit potential Real Men of Scotland. It’s not until she meets her tour guide that she discovers just how real they can be.
With his sexy grin, jeans, and black wellies, Ramsay Armstrong is an unpolished hulk of a Scottish fisherman—and a skeptic when it comes to romance. Not exactly a man of “pairing attributes” when talking marriageable matches, but he does make Kit’s heart beat a little faster. Maybe it’s the scent of the sea in his hair. Maybe it’s the challenge. Maybe it’s the thrill of the unexpected. Then again, maybe it’s love.
Today's Special - - Stop Four on the Avon Pennyroyal Green Excerpt Tour with Giveaway
I discovered Julie Anne Long in 2006 when I purchased a copy of Beauty and the Spy, the first book in her Holt Sisters trilogy. I enjoyed her writing and bought the next two Holt Sisters books but it was the 2008 publication of The Perils of Pleasure, the first book in her Pennyroyal Green series, that vaulted her from "I like this author's writing" to "OMG! I love this author, will shout her name from the rooftops, pre-order every book she writes, tell all my friends, and establish her own keeper shelf in my bookcase" status. Yes, I loved Colin Eversea's story that much and for the past seven years I have greeted the release of each successive book published in this series with a sense of anticipation and joy typically reserved for Belgian chocolates or NYC cheesecake. And, of course, with each book I crossed my fingers in the hope that JAL would drop a hint here or a clue there to the mystery surrounding the Romeo and Juliet romance between Lyon Redmond and Olivia Eversea. On September 29th, we will finally learn the whole story. As we count down to the release of The Legend of Lyon Redmond, let's take a step back and relive Lyon's and Olivia's story up until now by following the Avon Pennyroyal Green Excerpt Tour.
Excerpt #4
From What I Did For A Duke by Julie Anne Long
The Duke of Falconbridge converses with Olivia Eversea
“Good evening, Your Grace. Have you been sent to court me?”
Well.
“No one sends me anywhere I do not wish to go,” he replied easily. “I’m delighted to have an opportunity to speak with you.”
“She’s immeasurably kind, my sister.” Her mouth was wry at the corner and the words ironic. She sounded as though she was making a mental note to pinch Genevieve by the ear for setting a duke upon her. For clearly she thought this was why the duke was here.
“She is indeed kind.” He was certain there would be no disadvantage to flattering Genevieve to her sister. “She knew I would enjoy your company and conversation. And she assures me that you are kind, as well.”
“I’m not,” Olivia disagreed. “I’m committed. But not kind.”
“She assured me of that, as well,” he said smoothly. “Committed is an admirable thing to be sure. I’ve been accused of a similar quality.”
He was certainly committed to a course of action, anyway, with regards to Genevieve Eversea. Though he doubted anyone would call it admirable.
Across the room he noted, the way a predator notes prey, the presence of Ian Eversea.
“You’re committed to flattery, of a certainty.” Acerbic, though one would tolerate an acid tongue for a time when the owner of it was so very pretty. Like being pecked by a songbird.
“On the contrary. I’m not merely committed to flattery. I’m a positive acolyte of flattery.”
She smiled at that, and waved her fan thoughtfully beneath her chin, cocking her head, deciding whether he interested her.
Careful, Miss Eversea. You might slip up and flirt.
He considered whether he found Olivia’s directness appealing. It certainly simplified conversation. But simplification wasn’t necessarily always an improvement. Directness often disguised as much as it revealed, and was a marvelous defense. He could imagine suitors slinking away upon having frankness batted at them by the lovely Olivia Eversea.
Primarily he suspected Olivia Eversea quite simply didn’t care what he thought of her, while Genevieve Everseas’s Impulses were…well, they were in truth…kind. She cared whether he was comfortable even when she was uncomfortable. She was, in her way, more of a challenge and less of one.
And her kindness was what he would inevitably be able to exploit to achieve his ends.
Wiley she might be. But he was building his strategy.
He looked for her again, as she was indeed committed. Genevieve was now in conversation with a Mr. Adam Sylvaine, Pennyroyal Green’s vicar and a cousin on their mother’s side. He was long-boned and easy of manner. A striking man, what with the height and silvery-fair hair. All of which darkly amused the duke. He was certain bums were packed tightly on the Pennyroyal Green’s little pews every Sunday, and that most of them belonged to female. Clever decision on the part of the Everseas, taking such a cousin as the vicar.
And knowing their proclivities, certain to result in a scandal involving some poor unwed village girl and that vicar being run out of Pennyroyal Green on a rail or tumbling out of some woman’s window.
“Perhaps you’d be kind enough to share a dance with me later this evening, Miss Eversea?”
He suspected he received precisely the same amount of attention and charm as every other man who approached her. She appeared indomitable. He suspected she was something like the opposite.
He, like everyone else, knew the story of Lyon Redmond’s disappearance, and how she had allegedly driven him away.
The loss of love took everyone differently, he knew. Perhaps she’d spent all of the love she had and was left with clever deflection to protect her wounds.
Note from PJ:
Friday evening I received a copy of The Legend of Lyon Redmond. Here's what I posted after turning the final page at almost 2:00 am Saturday morning.
UPS delivered a review copy of THE LEGEND OF LYON REDMOND to my doorstep this evening. It's now 1:40 am and I just turned the final page with a deep and heartfelt sigh. When you long for a story for more than six years there's always a concern that it won't measure up to expectations. I needn't have worried. Julie Anne Long has outdone herself with a book that is exquisitely written, achingly romantic, heartbreakingly poignant, and supremely satisfying. It is everything I could have hoped for. And more.
I highly recommend THE LEGEND OF LYON REDMOND. It sits atop my Best of 2015 list. I can't wait to read it again...and again...and again.
Did you know that today is Julie Anne Long's birthday? Did you know it's also mine? To celebrate, I have two giveaways for you today: an autographed paperback copy of Like No Other Lover, the second book in the Pennyroyal Green series and a Kindle copy of The Legend of Lyon Redmond (to be delivered 9/29).
To be entered in the draw, leave a comment, a birthday greeting for Julie or tell me about your favorite Pennyroyal Green book. Winners will be posted Monday night.
