Review - - The Earl

The Earl
By Katharine Ashe
Publisher: Avon
Release Date: October 25, 2016

Be prepared for a grand adventure and, really, it’s quite a ride.

I loved The Earl from moment of the hero and heroine's first glimpse of one another at the end of The Rogue. Katherine Ashe has done it once again. The Earl holds a unique place in her booklist. It is the last book in her amazing Falcon Club series. (Go and glom her list for them.) It is also the second book in her latest series. Even so, I would venture to say you could read The Earl as a stand alone without a problem.

In The Earl, the identities of the final member of the Falcon Club, Peregrine and Lady Justice are finally revealed to both the reader and, more importantly, to one another. What is delicious is that one of them doesn’t know who the other is until much later in the book. What we also come to learn is that Peregrine and Lady Justice or Colin, Lord Egremoor and Lady Emily aka Zanobia have a history.

What draws them together beyond their hidden identities is a common quest. Lady Emily’s sister and her friend have gone missing. Lady Justice enlists Peregrine’s aid in finding her. After she discovers his identity, she decides to go out on her own to find her but this is Peregrine’s last mission and he would see it to its end. It’s what he does. Find people. And so they make their way to Scotland to a wicked Duke’s home where rumors of missing maidens abound.

They happen upon one another at an inn where the owners and drunken patrons take a particular interest in just who the Earl and the lady are. Angry villagers seem to be hot on their trail for crimes committed in the earl’s name. And so Emily and Colin are thrown together and have to make their way through fields and forest and farms. No one to trust but each other and that is a lot to ask.

It is on this unexpected journey that they open themselves to face their pain and communicate for the first time while working to find her sister and clear their names. There are surprises at every turn. They have much to learn about themselves, their hidden identities and what shaped them into who they are today.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone. Katherine Ashe brings Scotland to life. She brings love to two people who, in the end, bare their souls to one another and to the world.

Love is the grand adventure to this couple’s happily ever after.

Review - - The Christmas Triplets

The Christmas Triplets
By Tanya Michaels
Publisher: Harlequin Western Romance
(formerly Harlequin American Romance)
Release Date: November 1, 2016

Megan Rivers moved to Cupid’s Bow, Texas, because she wanted a new life for herself and her two-year-old triplet daughters after divorcing her cheating husband. A year later, she is still getting to know people in the small town and struggling to find a moment for herself between the demands of her job as a florist and her responsibilities as mom to three active three-year-olds: outgoing Daisy, focused Iris, and shy Lily. The hunky firefighter who lives next door is her candidate for the greatest heartbreaker in town. She has little tolerance for his hectic social life, which seems to feature flavor-of-the-week dates.

Will Trent is accustomed to women responding to his charm, and he’s puzzled but not unduly concerned by his neighbor’s hostility. Having spent half his life being faithful to one love, he has taken his father’s advice and is enjoying variety in his dating life since his fiancĂ©e dumped him twenty-four hours before their wedding. Still, he’s a good guy who enjoys a close relationship with his two brothers and the trust of his friends. One of those friends, a young woman with an infant son and a bad-news boyfriend, trusts him enough to leave her baby with him when she enters a rehab facility to get clean so that she can be a better mother. When Will is faced with a screaming baby boy and no idea how to quiet him, who better to turn to for help than the experienced mother of three?

Megan may not like Will, but she cannot resist young Tommy. It doesn’t take long for her to discover that Will is quite different from the playboy she imagined him to be. Not only is he doing his best for Tommy, but he also bonds with her girls, even demonstrating his ability to tell them apart. But Megan is leery of giving her heart to a man who was clearly enjoying his bachelorhood before Tommy and will presumably eagerly reclaim his freedom when Tommy’s mother returns. Can Will convince Megan that he is ready for a long-term commitment to her and her girls?

I have enjoyed many of Tanya Michaels’s stories, and I am a soft touch when it comes to Christmas stories with kids. Thus, I began this novel expecting it to be a sweet holiday reading experience, and it met my expectations. Megan and Will are likeable characters, good people with hearts a bit battered but still generous and giving. Daisy, Iris, and Lily are real kids. Each is a distinct personality, and they share a high adorability quotient without becoming too perfect and precious. Tommy is as heart-stealing and demanding as a baby should be. Will’s family adds an extra layer of warmth. And the Christmas scenes are genuine with sentiment that avoids slipping into treacly sentimentality.

Michaels also does an excellent job of balancing kid-appeal and feel-good family making with romance. I believed in Megan and Will's forever. This is the third book in the series, but it can be read as a standalone. I had no difficulty with it even though I had not read the first two books. I do warn you that I liked the secondary characters so much that I bought Falling for the Sheriff and Falling for the Rancher after reading The Christmas Triplets, and I am looking forward to a book for Will’s younger brother Jase.  Some readers don’t like children in romance fiction. If you fall in that group, clearly this book is not for you. On the other hand, if you like kids and Christmas and romance rich with sweetness and believability, I think you will be as charmed by this book as I was.

Today's Special - Once Upon a Christmas

I love Christmas anthologies. Not only is Christmas my favorite holiday but it's also a very busy time of year. What better than a collection of short, delicious, bites of romance when time is at a premium? I also enjoy romances set in different eras which is something that makes Once Upon a Christmas unique and especially enjoyable for a reader like me. The stories created by these four talented authors follow one family from the Regency to present day; from glittering Regency and Victorian ballrooms to freezing WWII battlefields to a truly sigh-worthy modern day conclusion when an American woman and an English duke have a second chance at love after a brief meeting seven years earlier. I'm delighted to welcome Maggie Robinson, Tiffany Clare, J.K. Coi, and Elyssa Patrick, the authors of Once Upon a Christmas.

Maggie Robinson is a former teacher and library clerk who now balances her time between writing historical romance and doting on her adorable grandchildren. She and her husband live in Maine when they're not exploring the world. Her next full-length novel, Schooling the Viscount, first in her new Cotswold Confidential series, will be released January 31, 2017. Learn more about Maggie Robinson and her books at her website and connect with online at Facebook and Twitter

Maggie: The best thing about Once Upon a Christmas? It’s given four friends a chance to collaborate on a book using our multi-genre experiences. JK Coi has a great “Dear Reader” letter in OUAC explaining, which got me a little misty-eyed. We all write such different things, but OUAC follows one ducal family for almost 200 years. That gave me a chance to dive back into the Regency again, Tiff to work her Victorian magic, JK to write her angsty World War II story, and Ely to finish up with her fun modern-day duke. We had a ball with it!

And speaking of balls, A Price Above Rubies begins at one. It is the first time in 20+ books I actually have written a hanky-panky behind the potted palms in a ballroom scene; I’ve generally avoided “the duke and the deb at the dance.” There’s a strong Cinderella element, but paid companion Helen leaves behind something more valuable than a glass slipper. It’s up to Gabriel, 6th Duke of Ravenglass, to find her, return it, and make her his!

Tiffany Clare writes sexy historical romances set in the Victorian era. A Canadian, Tiffany lives in Toronto with her husband, two children, and two dogs. She's currently working on her next book. Learn more about Tiffany Clare and her books at her website and connect with her online at Facebook and Twitter

Tiffany: From the moment Elyssa mentioned collaborating on a family-through-the-ages saga, I knew this was our chance to write a story together. We’ve known each other so long, but have always written pretty far apart in style and sub-genre. This was like a breath of fresh air; a chance to tell a great holiday story, and to explore a family through each generation. (Though we had some pretty funny conversations along the way about which duke number we were at and what special items were being carried forward. BTW, our math—mine—sucks on occasion.)

My story starts the MacCallon legacy! I’m looking forward to writing the MacCallon series starting with the youngest sister Emily in Never Have I Ever Kissed a Duke, and yes, there is a game of Never Have I Ever! playing out in this story. It’s a best friend’s younger sister story, with a young independent woman finding her way in the world. But damn, reacquainting with the duke makes him rethink what he thought he knew about the world of falling in love!

J.K.Coi is an award-winning author of contemporary and paranormal romance and urban fantasy. J.K. spends her days in the world of insurance law while devoting her nights to her husband, son, and writing. Learn more about J.K. Coi and her books at her website and connect with her online at Facebook and Twitter

JK Coi: What I enjoyed the most about writing Loving Lord Spy for Once Upon a Christmas was brainstorming the themes with these three fantastic writer friends. They all have such unique perspectives, and while they have each always been a font of knowledge, it was amazing to be able to pick their brains on a common project for the first time.

One of the themes we brainstormed was the Cinderella fairy tale, and while not all of us ended up using the theme, Maggie and I did. Although she focused on the idea of the ball and the lost item, I focused on Cinderella’s backstory involving her stepmother and step-siblings. I hope you enjoy my twist to it!

Elyssa Patrick is a former English teacher who left school behind to focus her energies on writing contemporary romance. As noted in her website bio, Patrick pens "quirky romantic comedies that are full of humor, heat, and heart." Learn more about Elyssa Patrick and her books at her website and connect with her online at Facebook and Twitter

Elyssa:  I had so much fun working with my friends on this anthology! I love these fabulously talented women, and I’m so lucky that they’re also my dearest friends. They’re like family to me—I know they always have my back. It felt so right to have this anthology center around a family and to explore them through the ages. We each have a different writing voice and style, but all of our novellas fit so well together. There’s a strong connection throughout.

In my novella, I explore a particularly strong connection between my hero, Kit, and heroine, Belle. I had read one Missed Connection that had gone viral—and the ad really got to me. Plus, I have my own missed connection story, so I felt a personal pull to write this. I think we’ve all that moment in our lives where we’ve wondered What If. (For the record, the missed connection in my story is nothing like the missed connections I read or experienced.) I wanted to write about a missed connection that actually reconnected. What would happen if the hero and heroine met after seven years? I wanted to explore that What If. And I had such a blast writing this—I love the story so much. Belle and Kit were an utter delight, and I hope that, if you decide to read Once Upon a Christmas, that you feel that same delight in all of our stories as we did writing them.

Maggie again: Now I want to know what Elyssa’s missed connection is!

We all hope you have the most wonderful holidays!

PJ here. Many thanks to Maggie, Tiffany, J.K., and Elyssa for stopping by today. I thoroughly enjoyed this anthology and give it my enthusiastic recommendation. I'm excited to read that Tiffany Clare plans to write more stories for the MacCallon family and am hoping that Elyssa Patrick's creative spirit might lead her to write stories for Kit's siblings!

Today's authors are giving away an e-book of Once Upon a Christmas to two commenters.

The holidays are a time for family, celebration--and the Dukes of Ravenglass to fall in love. Spend the Christmas season with the Wynter family, as the Dukes of Ravenglass find their happily-ever-afters in this delightful, heartfelt collection that spans from the Regency era to the present day.

In A Price Above Rubies by Maggie Robinson, set in the Regency era, paid companion Helen Lowe doesn't know the man she shares her first-ever dance--and first-ever kiss--is Gabriel Wynter, a reclusive, notorious duke. When Helen flees after being exposed, she leaves behind something of far greater value than a glass slipper. Can Gabriel find her, return it, and finally open his heart?

In the Victorian-era set, Never Have I Ever Fallen in Love with a Duke by Tiffany Clare, Alexander Wynter has a problem--his best friend's younger sister grew up. When he agreed to help Emily MacCallon make her debut, he didn't expect the beautiful, alluring woman before him--or for her to lead him on such a merry chase. Alexander knows one thing: the only man she'll be kissing forever and ever is him.

In the World War II-set, Loving Lord Spy by J.K. Coi, Winnie Jenkins, a combat nurse, and Lord David Wynter, an injured British spy, fall in love at the worst possible time. Each of them owes a duty to their country and must go their separate ways. They promise that when the war is finally over, they'll meet in Hyde Park on Christmas morning . . . but agree that if one of them doesn't make it, the other won't seek out the reason why. Can they keep their appointment? Or will secrets, lies, and the perils of war keep them apart?

A missed connection gets a second chance in the present-day contemporary romance, Saved by the Belle by Elyssa Patrick. Seven years ago, Kit Wynter met the woman of his dreams. Even after all this time, he's never been able to forget the American girl who captured his heart. When Belle Sweeney answers his ad--for she, too, never forgot him--it feels like there's something still there. Spending the holiday at Ravenglass Abbey is the perfect opportunity to figure out if this is love.

Review - - One Snowy Night

One Snowy Night
By Jill Shalvis
Publisher: Avon Impulse
Release Date: November 8, 2016

Rory Andrews, one of Willa Davis’s rescues (The Trouble with Mistletoe), has promised her step-dad that she will be home for Christmas to surprise her mother and three half-sisters. With a history of broken promises, it is imperative that Rory follows through this time if she wants her family to understand that she is no longer the troubled seventeen-year-old who left home six years ago. Thanks to well-meaning but interfering friends, she is making the trip to Lake Tahoe in Max Stranton’s truck, and Max is the at the bottom of Rory’s list of people with whom she wants to spend four hours plus enclosed in the cab of a truck.

Max has mixed feelings about the trip. He is all too aware of the sparks that fly every time he sees Rory, and since his own Christmas trip home takes him past the house where Rory’s family lives, it makes sense to save Rory money and a majorly inconvenient trip from San Francisco to Tahoe. Offering Rory the passenger seat in his truck is the right thing to do and it is what their mutual friends expect him to do. But Max is not comfortable with his feelings for Rory. He can’t forget that six years ago she wrecked the plans he had for his life.

The combination of playing Good Samaritan and the resulting delay ensure that Rory, Max, and Max’s Doberman Carl are caught in a snowstorm. Rory can’t keep her promise to be home for Christmas Eve, and neither she nor Max can avoid the tensions of the past and the chemistry they have tried to deny. This snowy Christmas Eve night will be one neither of them will forget.

Jill Shalvis’s 2016 Christmas novella is a sweet, sexy treat for fans of the Heartbreaker Bay series. If you read The Trouble with Mistletoe, you will know some of Rory’s story and be aware of the attraction between her and Max. If you are unfamiliar with the series, this novella is probably not the best place to begin. I loved Rory and Max—almost as much as I loved Carl. In fact, I thought all three of them deserved more than the brief treatment they get in the novella. The plot is too close to that of The Trouble with Mistletoe, but Rory and Max’s story is intriguing and substantive enough to make a reader forget that if the story were developed. It isn’t. Instead the reader has to be satisfied with one hot winter evening and a quick, simplistic Christmas morning resolution to Rory’s family problems. I felt as if the novella’s pages should have been the first third of a novel.

I hope that Accidentally on Purpose (January 24, 2017), Elle and Archer’s story (Big sigh!) will include a tidbit or two about Rory and Max—and Carl, of course.

Today's Special - - The Legendary Lord Tour

The Legendary Lord
By Valerie Bowman
Publisher: St. Martin's
Release Date: November 1, 2016

When Christian Forester, Viscount Berkeley, flees the stuffy ballrooms of London for his Scottish hunting lodge, the last thing he expects to find ensconced before his fire is an incredibly beautiful woman. But the plight of lovely Sarah Highgate, who has run away from an unwanted betrothal, inspires an eminently practical exchange. He'll safeguard her reputation with the ton while she advises him how to best attract a proper bride...

As the undisputed belle of the season, Sarah has enchanted plenty of suitors. Still, she isn't interested in marriage, especially not to the pompous bore her father has chosen for her. But her hasty escape seems reckless now that she's estranged from her family and has no one to count on besides Christian. Turning the luckless lord into a catch has another unplanned consequence for Sarah: Has he run away with her heart?

As with the earlier books in her Playful Brides series, Valerie Bowman once again has created an enjoyable, feel-good story with engaging characters, witty banter, heartfelt emotion, playful humor and a sigh-worthy happy ending.

Sarah and Christian first meet when he discovers her in his Scotland hunting cottage. She's run from an unwanted betrothal engineered by her father and ends up snowbound with Christian. He quickly realizes that Sarah is unlike any other society miss he's met (she cooks, knits, is kind, and not the least bit spoiled or entitled). Also, as the belle of the current season, she's the perfect person to help transform him into a man who will be able to attract a bride. He hasn't had much luck on his own. He always seems to end up the best friend, never the lover.

By the time the weather improves enough for them to leave the cottage, a few things have happened. Sarah has taught Christian how to make himself more attractive to society ladies, they have become friends, and Sarah is having second thoughts about disobeying her parents. With the assistance of Christian's influential friends, the two go their separate ways and Sarah is returned to London without damage to her reputation yet neither of them can't quite forget the other. When Christian finally returns to London, Sarah is still betrothed to a man she can't bear to be near (the thought of him touching her keeps her on the verge of a panic attack) yet she doesn't have the courage to defy society and her parents a second time. The more Christian and Sarah are together, the more their feelings deepen but he can't bring himself to be vulnerable enough to tell her how he really feels about her and she can't see any way out of marrying the man chosen by her parents. Will they ever find a way to be together?

I love the slow build of this story and how Sarah and Christian become friends first before acknowledging the growing romantic feelings they have for one another. The secondary cast is a delight, especially the heroines from previous Playful Brides books who are determined to see their dear friend, Christian finally find his happy ending. There's also Sarah's brother who I do hope we'll be seeing more of in a future book.

The Legendary Lord is the sixth book in Bowman's Playful Brides series but can easily be read as a standalone. However, by the time you finish, you'll probably be so captivated by the heroes and heroines from previous books who have prominent roles in Christian and Sarah's story that you'll want to download their books immediately.

Excerpt from The Legendary Lord

Christian contemplated the young lady sitting across from him. He’d never considered such aspects of an arranged marriage before. Most of the ladies he knew, like his friends the Duchess of Claringdon, the Countess of Swifdon, and Mrs.  Upton, had all chosen their husbands, fallen in love with them, actually. It had to be difficult to be a female forced to marry in accordance with her family’s wishes. It was done all the time, of course, this wasn’t an extraordinary circumstance, but Lady Sarah obviously had chosen to flee rather than obey. At great potential risk to her reputation. He could well imagine how her imperious father would react. The Earl of Highfield was a good man but could be pompous when the occasion arose.
“The worst part is,” she continued, “that everyone keeps informing me how fortunate I am. How lucky to have drawn the eye of the marquess, what a boon it is, et cetera.”
“You don’t feel fortunate?” Christian took another bite of stew.
“I’ve tried to feel fortunate. I have. I truly have. There must be something awfully wrong with me to not feel fortunate. But then, one night, I got a funny feeling in my chest. I can’t explain it other than to say that I couldn’t breathe. The room seemed to be closing about me. I felt frightened. I only knew I had to leave.”
“Leave?” Christian narrowed his eyes on her.
“Flee. Get out. Be anywhere but there.”
He watched her carefully. “And you decided to come here?”
“It was the only place I could think of.”
“Did you leave just before the wedding, then?”
“No.” She groaned again. “That’s what is even more mad. The wedding isn’t to be until spring. But I just had to go. Oh, I know I sound positively insane. It’s quite difficult to explain.” She shook her head sadly and pushed her stew around in her bowl with her spoon.
Christian had never heard of a lady who had the same sort of reaction to worry that he had. Tight chest? Fear? Walls closing in? He’d experienced the same sensations himself on more than one occasion. It was some sort of attack of the nerves that he dreaded. It didn’t sound positively mad to him in the least. “You plan to remain here till spring?”
Sarah’s hand paused on the spoon. “No. Of course not. I’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve always done everything I’ve been told. Never broken one rule. I cannot image Mother’s shock. I feel absolutely awful. I don’t know what I was thinking.”
Christian rubbed his chin. “What did you think would happen if you ran away?”
She sighed. “I’m not a complete fool. I did have a plan. I took clothes and all the pin money I’d been saving for years. I decided to dress as a maid so I wouldn’t need help with my clothing.”
“Very astute of you.” He inclined his head. “But you brought a chaperone with you?”
“I never intended for Mrs. Goatsocks to come.”
Christian let that part go for the moment. “Why did you save your pin money?”
“No particular reason. I simply abhor shopping. The only things I ever bought were gifts for Mother and Father and Hart and Mrs. Goatsocks and my maid.”
“Hart?”
“My elder brother.”
“Ah, yes, Highfield’s heir. What was your plan once you got to your father’s hunting lodge?”
She took such a long draught of wine that she drained the glass. She stood to retrieve the bottle from the table near the hearth. “I hoped to create a scandal. Hopefully one that would be bad enough that Lord Branford would ask Father to destroy the marriage contract.”
Christian’s lips twitched with humor. “And if that didn’t work?”
“That was my entire plan. How could it not work? Who would want a wife who’d been missing and unchaperoned?”
Christian eyed her up and down. Clearly the young woman had little idea how appealing she was. He doubted Branford would let some idle gossip stop the wedding. “And now I feel like an idiot,”
Sarah continued, “and dear Mrs. Goatsocks has been injured and poor Mr. Fergus had to go out in the snow just before a storm and it’s all my fault.”
His bowl clean, Christian leaned back in his chair and folded his hands over his middle. “Well, the stew you cooked is a sight better than anything Fergus has ever made, so I’m glad you’re here for the moment, at least.”
She tried to return his smile but couldn’t. “I’m sorry if I can’t quite see the humor in it. I’ve ruined my life.”
“You must have felt quite strongly to have taken such a risk.”
“I did. But now, now I feel as if I’ll never be able to fix it. Oh, why? Why did I run away so hastily?”
Christian rested his forearm atop his head. “It sounded to me as if you didn’t have a choice.”
“Father will never forgive me.”
“Do you forgive him? For betrothing you to Lord Branford?”
She blinked at Christian quizzically, as if she didn’t understand the question. “I’ve been expected to make a desirable match since I was young. If you’ve been to balls in London, you must know how these things go. And to marry a marquess? Well, it’s Father’s dream for me. ”
Christian nodded. “I do know how these things go, but I also know that it isn’t unheard of for parents to take their children’s feelings into consideration when making such decisions.”
The look of confusion on her face deepened. “I never told them I didn’t want to marry Lord Branford.”
Christian’s arm fell away from his head and he sat up straight. “My dear girl, why ever not?”
“I was trying to be brave. Do the right thing. You know? Keep a stiff upper lip and all that.”
“And if you go back, will you tell them then?”
“It doesn’t matter now.” She grabbed the wine bottle and returned to her seat. She tipped the bottle into her glass, refilling it. “I’ve been awful and selfish, I know. It’s all I can think about. I must return home to face the scandal and the censure. Perhaps someday I will find a man willing to look past my tainted reputation.”
Christian settled back against his chair again and righted his shoulders. “What if Branford still wants you?”
Her eyes widened with surprise. “Why would he want a wife steeped in scandal?”
Because you’re exceedingly beautiful. “Trust me, it’s more than pos si ble.”
She sighed, holding her glass just beneath her red lips. “I hadn’t even considered that. I’ve been such a fool. I regret it. I do. I regret it horribly. I’ve been a hideously disobedient daughter.”
Christian narrowed his eyes on her. “You truly believe that?”
“Yes. I feel absolutely sick. Now that I’ve had a chance to calm down and think about everything, I’m certain. I’d do anything to get back to London with no one being any the wiser, but the longer I stay here, the less chance I have of that happening. I fear it’s too late for my reputation. And now I’m stuck here with . . .”
Christian plucked up his own wineglass and grinned at her again. “Me.”
She nodded miserably.
He lifted the glass and eyed her through the dark liquid. “Well, Lady Sarah Highgate, what if I told you that I can help?”
