PJ's Thoughts:

Grumpy, Christmas-hating Santa (he has reasons) meets over-the-top, Christmas-loving Mrs. Claus (reasons here too) and the two end up stuck with each other as volunteers at a retirement home bubbling over with frisky, mischievous senior citizens? Sign me up!

This one was fun. I love the grumpy-sunshine vibe and Eben and Melody certainly bring it. There's plenty of humor, spice, and holiday cheer but it's not all holiday shenanigans, though there are plenty of those. There's also an emotion-driven, serious underpinning that gives the story depth to offset the fun. 

Eben and Melody both have emotional trauma and complicated family dynamics in their past and present. It gives a nice balance to the delicious spice and snappy banter between them. As they slowly open themselves to one another it allows for personal growth and the development of a relationship where they can each be - and be appreciated for - their true selves. I enjoyed both aspects of their journey.

Back to the fun side of things. The antics of the residents of the retirement home are some of the best scenes in this book. The Christmas talent show in particular is hilarious. I strongly recommend not eating or drinking anything while reading that chapter. It's snort laughter from start to finish.

I'm looking forward to book two in the Cherryville series and hoping it will feature Melody's best friend. I'm already invested in her and curious to discover what her future holds.

Determined to keep things professional, Harriet makes it search for new candidates. But as Gale dutifully endures awkward outings with pop stars and athletes, the chemistry between them only intensifies. And his willing cooperation during their sessions definitely isn’t helping her stay focused.

With her deadline approaching and The E.M.M.A. still playing cupid, Harriet must choose: trust in pure logic, or admit that sometimes taking control means letting go.

Maybe The E.M.M.A. knows something they don’t—even if they’re not ready to compute it yet.

PJ's Thoughts:

Part STEM, part hockey, and full-on best-friend's-younger-brother romance, Lia Riley has crafted a funny and emotionally complex romcom that kept me entertained throughout. 

I love the best friend's brother/sister trope. This one gave me the tried and true plus interesting twists that made it original. It was fun to watch Gale and Harriet dance around the attraction between them. Their interactions are endearing, sometimes awkward, sparkling with chemistry and at times, a bit frustrating. 

Nobody is more frustrated than E.M.M.A, the AI creation of Harriett and her team. E.M.M.A. is a shining star of this story. I loved how she gradually evolved throughout the book, gaining surprising insight and capabilities not only into Gale, the subject of Harriet's testing but into Harriet as well. She may be AI but she's a pivotal character in her own right and surprisingly believable. 

Harriet is brilliant, accomplished, and totally lacking in relationship self-confidence. She also has control tendencies, in and out of the bedroom, which have not been appreciated by past boyfriends. Hence, her current rock-bottom dating self-worth issues. But, then there's Gale, her best friend's younger brother, her secret crush, a man who, unbeknownst to Harriet, is more than willing to relinquish bedroom control to the woman he's been half in love with since middle school. Bring on the spice. And the kittens. Can't forget the kittens.

To gain the trust of the locals, she’ll have to ditch her blazer and pose as a “honeymooning couple” with her mortal enemy.

Derek isn’t about to let Jasmine best him on the venture that will seal their fate during this company audit. But wherever he goes, she’s there—in his hotel suite, digging for the same research, and even stealing the loyalty of his dog (traitor). Worse, her tempting performance as his fiancée has him torn between killing her career or kissing her senseless. But as the two get deeper into their charade, they discover little Miller’s Cove has a lot of big secrets. Secrets that could save their careers . . . but at what cost?

PJ's Thoughts:

This was my first book by Lucy Eden. It won't be my last. 

So many of my favorite tropes have center stage in this story. Derek and Jasmine were childhood friends who parted amidst bad feelings and haven't spoken in years until they are reunited only to discover they are workplace rivals for the same position at a newly merged company. Enemies to lovers: one of my favorites. But it doesn't stop there. We have fake newlyweds, forced proximity, small-town romance, spicy chemistry, one bed, and...oops...one gets sick and the other nurses them back to health. Not to mention a heart-stealing, matchmaking dog (you won't convince me otherwise). 

There's more to savor in this book than just Derek and Jasmine. Eden also dips into the multiple layers of the town of Miller's Cove, its citizens, and its origin story. Rising from the grief of an actual historic event in Tulsa, OK, this small Florida town is zealously guarded by the people who call it home, especially those descended from the founding families. I really enjoyed this aspect of the story and the hope rising from the ashes of an attack not enough people know about. 

Then there's the dynamics stemming from Derek's and Jasmine's families, once best friends and business partners, now bitter enemies. Their history has played a significant role in Derek's and Jasmine's feelings over the years as well as their currently deepening emotions for one another. I was surprised by the truths that were revealed. I also hope we'll get to see more of Derek's brother and a certain doctor. 

If you enjoy a friends-to-enemies-to-lovers romance with heart-tugging emotion, humor, multi-layered characters, spicy romance, a dog who steals not only scenes but also hearts, and a happy ending, not only for our main couple but the town as well, pick up a copy of The Love Audit. It has my enthusiastic recommendation. 

Review - - Second Chance Romance

Karl and Molly were never together. There was a time, right after high school, where it seemed like they might finally cross the line from friends to lovers…but instead, a foolish misunderstanding meant they never spoke again. Molly went to LA and got married. Karl stayed in Harlot’s Bay and bought a bakery.

The only connection the pair has shared over the years is painfully one-sided: Now divorced, Molly narrates monster romance audiobooks, and Karl is an ever-diligent listener, clinging to his only piece of the one that got away.

Still, Molly hasn’t totally left Harlot’s Bay behind. When she hears that Karl’s obituary has run in the local paper, unexpected grief prompts her to hop on the next flight to Maryland…where she finds Karl very much alive, the victim of nothing but an accidental obituary.

As the pair reunite, they finally hash out their missed connection. True, Molly isn’t quite ready to trust again, but Karl is determined to prove himself worthy of her faith and devotion. And as her remaining time in Harlot’s Bay ticks down, Molly, the habitual cynic, just might find that Karl, the cranky town curmudgeon, is impossible to leave behind a second time.

PJ's Thoughts:

If you've read my Top Dish review of last year's At First Spite (Harlot's Bay - Book 1), you know that I fell hard for this historic coastal town and her citizens. Book two, Second Chance Romance, has only reinforced those feelings. I first read an ARC of Second Chance Romance four months ago after which I posted the following: "Snort laughs, ugly tears, and swoony romance. This one's going straight to my list of 2025 favorites." I read the book again this week and those feelings have not changed. Olivia Dade has tapped a gold mine with these characters and I am here for every single word and emotion. 

Karl is everything I could have hoped for...and more. With his crusty exterior, marshmallow center, aversion to using his words (who needs to when actions work just as well?), baking expertise (A man who bakes? Yes, please!), creative murder mind (not that he'd hurt a fly but whoa, that's one creative imagination), kindness, salty mutter yells (the man has no volume control), and nurturing soul, he's not your typical romance hero but he's one of my all-time favorites...and he's absolutely perfect for Molly. 

Molly? OMG, I love every bit of her nerdy, fact-spouting, wary-heart self. If anyone deserves a happy ending after being betrayed, first by her father then her jerk of an ex-husband, it's Molly. No wonder she doesn't trust easily. Watching her gradually open herself not only to Karl but to others in Harlot's Bay was a delight. Watching her regain her confidence and stand up to those trying to run roughshod over her was even better. Watching her open her heart and claim her happiness? Cue happy tears and swoony delight. 

If you enjoy second chances, banter for days, emotional depth, laugh-out-loud humor, body positivity, slow-burn romance, a terrific supporting cast, and a lead couple who will steal your heart and have you cheering them on every step of the way, pick up a copy of Olivia Dade's Second Chance Romance. It's a funny, endearing, warm hug of a book that kept me engaged and entertained from beginning to end.

Luckily, her best friend has the perfect solution: a vacant family lake house in North Texas, all hers for two weeks of distraction-free painting. Or so she thought.

Turns out professional golfer Harrison Neely also rented the lake house so he can spend the holidays rehabbing the injury that has put his career—and life—on hold. Despite the booking snafu, both Amy and Harrison (along with Amy's old blind dog and the army of child-sized nutcrackers residing in the living room) agree to share the festive lodging.

When an impending snowstorm has the two cozying up by the fire, sparks fly in more ways than one, and they open up to each other, unwrapping secrets and stories they’ve never shared before. But Harrison is expected back on the tournament circuit after the holidays, and Amy's family needs her. As their departure date looms and her family and his manager press them for answers, they’ll have to decide if this December to remember has been a fun holiday fling, or if they’ve found a Christmas miracle: true love.

PJ's Thoughts:

So. Much. Fun. This book felt like it was written solely for my enjoyment. I laughed. I sighed. I cringed. I laughed some more. I cheered. I sighed and laughed at the same time.  

Anyone who has lived with clueless teenagers (who can't find items right in front of them without their mom's help), dealt with a clueless ex who has discovered the grass really isn't greener on the younger side of the fence and wants to come home (not happening), or suffered loving but (again, clueless) extended family who don't seem to understand you have needs too (how many texts a day are too many and just how long is my unemployed brother going to be sleeping on my couch?) should be able to identify with Amy's line in the sand. This woman has reached a breaking point and needs her two weeks alone at her friend's family home. Too bad (or is it?) her friend's sister rented the house to Harrison for the same two weeks.  

London taps into all the fun and chaos of this steamy, endearing, and hilarious forced proximity, adversaries-to-lovers romance. There's plenty of laughter but also satisfying emotional depth and character growth. Harrison (almost fifty, never married, no children, no pets) has devoted his entire life to golf but because of injury is now facing a professional crossroads. Could a personal crossroads be on the table as well? Amy (same age) has devoted her adult life to her family and is now wondering how she lost herself in the process and if it's too late to recapture her youthful dreams. She certainly isn't looking for a new romance but fate (and sisters who don't talk to each other) seem to have stepped in to steer both of them in that direction.

Both Amy and Harrison came to the lake seeking solitude. Neither expected to find the other. Harrison also did not expect to find an elderly, mostly blind dog who goes thud in the night (actually, around the clock). Amy wasn't surprised by the dog seeing as she's the one who brought her. And, by the way, that dog stole every single scene she was in...and she was in quite a few. They absolutely did not expect to be sharing their space with multiple uninvited guests who promise to stay out of their way but this is a rom-com and we all know how that goes. The menu is set for hilarity, frustration, holiday shenanigans, personal growth, surprises (so many surprises), sneaky romantic encounters, and, just maybe, a chance to fall in love and forge a new path...together.  

While it was Snowing overflows with sparkling banter, impeccably-placed humor, emotional depth, slow-burn romance, and pure entertainment from start to finish. I loved it and plan to make it an annual holiday read.

PJ's Thoughts:

I pretty much smiled through this entire book. I mean, come on, pair a by-the-book, single-dad billionaire with a big-hearted, taking-a-career-break, more-than-she-seems Nanny. Add forced proximity, sparkling banter, sizzling attraction, humor, fun, emotional depth, and steam for days. Then, just for kicks, top it with an 11-year-old matchmaker, meddling brothers and friends, plus growing feelings, and Max and Cozy just might have the perfect recipe for their very own happily ever after. 

I prefer to read a series in order. In the case of Last on the List, however, I did things backwards. While this is book five in the Wait with Me series, it is also the prequel to the Mountain Men Matchmaker series. I have not read the first four books in the Wait with Me series and I have read the first three books in the Mountain Men Matchmaker series (which feature Max, Cozy, and Everly as secondary but important characters several years later). I'm happy to say that this did not impair my level of enjoyment one bit. After meeting Max's friends, I will definitely be picking up their books. As far as his "Mountain Men" brothers, it was fun to go back in time and read the origin story of their beloved niece and personal matchmaker, Everly. Wherever you are in the reading order of either series, Last on the List stands well on its own and has my enthusiastic recommendation.

When he discovers she’s carrying a serious torch for her brother’s best friend, Robbie knows he should just go back to clubbing and whipped cream bikini parties, but he can’t seem to leave Skylar to flounder on her romantic quest to land another man. Nor can he miss out on the opportunity to spend time with her and hopefully redeem himself. Before Robbie knows it, he’s agreed to be Skylar’s fake boyfriend/love coach at an upcoming family wilderness competition where her crush will be in attendance. What could go wrong?

Through a series of contests that require them to trust each other, Robbie and Skylar grow closer and closer until their fake relationship starts to feel like the realest thing they’ve ever known and the sizzling lessons in sensuality burn out of control.

But it’s all just pretend…right?

PJ's Thoughts:

Full disclosure: I've read three Tessa Bailey books. The first two were a struggle. I didn't connect with the characters or their journeys and was at the point where I was ready to admit I just wasn't the right demographic for her writing. I mean, thousands of readers love her so it had to be me, right? But, then along came Pitcher Perfect and a heroine Bailey said was partially inspired by (U.S. Rugby player) Ilona Maher. Once I read that, I had to give her one more try. Holy wow, am I glad I did!

Pitcher Perfect is one of those unicorn books that flowed like hot maple syrup over a stack of yummy pancake perfection. It grabbed my attention from the first page, never lagged, never wavered, and kept me happily flipping pages until the final word. There's enemies-to-lovers romance, fake dating, forced proximity, unexpected vulnerability, family wilderness games (with accompanying snort laughter and tears), banter for days, thought-provoking family dysfunction (but also love and humor), self discovery, surprising twists, and sigh-worthy words - and actions - of respect, admiration, and love. Basically, everything that makes my reader's heart happy. 

I couldn't read this book fast enough while also wanting it to never end. Robbie and Skylar are one of my favorite couples I've read in a long time. Pitcher Perfect is my favorite romcom of 2025. It's a book, and a couple, I want to revisit time and time again. Pitcher Perfect has my highest, Top Dish, do not miss this book, recommendation. Seriously, buy it now. It's that good. 

Note: For those of you who say you don't read "sports" romance, know that while hockey and softball are integral facets of Robbie's and Skylar's lives, the main focus of this book is the personal relationships that bring challenges, growth, self-realization, and love to the characters within.

Desperate, she takes a summer gig at the B&B’s sister hostel in Galway, Ireland. It’ll be an adventure, she convinces herself, and it’ll give her some time to plan her Next Act.

As it turns out, Galway has everything Chelsea hates: nonstop rain, no iced coffee, shared bathrooms. Working at The Wanderer might grant her time and a few extra lines on her resume, but Chelsea can’t help but feel like she left her life back in Massachusetts. Her new coworkers, however, are determined to change her mind, especially the handsome and charming tour guide Collin.

Collin and Chelsea strike up a deal: he’ll show Chelsea everything Ireland has to offer, and only then can she pass judgement. Sure enough, Chelsea finds herself warming up to the hostel and Irish lifestyle… and falling for her charismatic new friend. An Irish Summer is a heartfelt, transporting story perfect for readers looking for the thrill of moving away from home and the unique magic of summer love. 

PJ's Thoughts:

What a lovely, charming story. I felt like I was taking a guided tour of Ireland - with a sexy Irish guide - from the comfort of my home. Of course, by the time I finished the book, I was ready to pack my bags and book a flight to the Emerald Isle so there's that...

I love a fish out of water story and when Chelsea first arrives in Galway she is not only out of her comfort zone but also ready to board the first flight back to Boston. It's an absolute delight to watch her slowly over the course of one summer open her heart not only to the country of Ireland but also to the many friends she makes there and, especially, to Collin. I love the friendship that forms between them that slowly evolves into something deeper and I fretted over how they would possibly find their HEA with Holly so very committed to building a life away from Ireland even as she falls hard for both Collin and Ireland. 

Collin, on the other hand, is Irish through and through. He worked for a bit in the U.S. but returned to his beloved homeland. His love for the many special qualities she offers are clear to see and feel. The descriptions of places, people, and activities are so vibrantly depicted that it really did feel as if I was by their sides experiencing everything with them. He falls first and it was an absolute delight to witness. I was pulling so hard for both him and his country to win Holly's heart. 

Friendships and families - both bio and chosen - are in the forefront of this book. I love the bonds between Holly and her hometown bestie and between Holly and a second bestie she meets while in Galway. Then there's Collin's family. I want to accompany him and Holly to the raucous Sunday roast at his family home just to be able to watch and listen. 

If you're looking for a fun, heartwarming romcom that will take you on a tour of self-discovery and romance across the emerald green hillsides, sparkling waters, and rollicking pubs of Ireland, depositing you at the end, brimming with happiness, satisfaction, and the desire to start planning your own trip, I recommend picking up a copy of An Irish Summer. It has my enthusiastic recommendation.  

Review - - Finding Mr. July

     The only con? Working with Jonathan Summers. But if Holly wants her calendar of hot, outdoorsy guys and their dogs to win against everyone else’s fundraising ideas, she’ll need Jonathan’s undeniable talent as a photographer…even if he is the office grump.

     When their collaboration accidentally gets off to a steamy start, Holly vows she won’t be distracted again. But as they scramble to shoot a year’s worth of hunks and pups in just a couple of weeks, the spark between Holly and Jonathan can’t be ignored.

     With Holly’s career dreams finally coming into focus, whatever’s developing with Jonathan makes her wonder—could she be missing the bigger picture?

PJ's Thoughts:

What a fun read, perfect for vacation, the beach, the backyard, or wherever your summer happy reading spot is located. 

I love a MMC with a grumpy attitude and a soft center. Jonathan has both, as well as some significant emotional baggage. It's fun to watch him square off with Holly (great banter!), especially when their undeniable chemistry comes out to play. He's a good guy but issues have steered him away from his passion (photography) and into a new field where he keeps his head down and interpersonal contacts to a minimum. I loved watching him slowly reopen and begin to regain his confidence.  

Holly is an intern at a new company who brings a single-minded focus to her new position. She's determined to win a promotion that will take her far away from her backstabbing ex and the betrayal that cost her a promising law career and she's determined to do it with Jonathan's assistance. Easy peasy. Except, Jonathan doesn't want to help, she's struggling to find twelve dogs with agreeable owners, and then there are those pesky feelings that keep cropping up.

I enjoyed both Jonathan and Holly though, I admit, it did take me longer to warm up to Holly. She has the more significant growth arc, resulting in moments throughout the book where I wondered just how - or if - the author would get these two on the same HEA page. No worries. She accomplishes it in a realistic and believable fashion.

Secondary characters add a lot of humor, emotion, and texture to this story. I especially enjoyed Holly's mentor and Jonathan's dad as well as Holly's brother and niece. And, of course, the dogs. Their photo shoots were an absolute delight, especially the socially awkward ones.
