A by-the-book Fed…gone rogue for justice

To stop the drug epidemic ravaging Midnight Pass, FBI agent Ryder Durant reluctantly takes matters into his own hands. It's been a while since I read a Harlequin Romantic Suspense book. Undercover K-9 Cowboy was a great one to re-introduce me to the line. It reeled me in quickly and held my attention right up to the breath-stealing conclusion. 

Fox skillfully blends romance, action, and suspense in this fourth book of her family-centric, Midnight Pass, Texas series. I was totally on board with the push and pull of the attraction and conflict between youngest Reynolds sibling, Arden and new FBI agent in town, Ryder. I loved how they challenged each other, how they opened one another to new viewpoints, unexpected feelings, and, in Arden's case, potential healing from emotional trauma that had directed her life choices. They are such a great match though it does take them a while to realize that. Of course, I fell head over heels for Ryder's K-9 partner, Murphy, his love for Arden, and his heroics. He's as much a hero as Ryder. 

The suspense portion of the book builds in intensity, with twists, turns, and a few surprises, until its climactic, edge-of-your-seat conclusion. It also brings the entire Reynolds family into the fray, including the three couples who were the focus of books one - three. Even though I haven't read those stories yet, I never felt confused or "out of the loop" while reading Undercover K-9 Cowboy. Instead, I found myself as intrigued by Arden's brothers and their wives as I was with Ryder and Arden. I've downloaded the earlier books and will be reading them soon. 

I don't know if Fox has plans to return to Midnight Pass but I really hope she does. There are some secondary characters begging for a story, drug runners who have yet to be brought to justice, and I'd be more than happy to check in with everyone at the Reynolds family ranch.

 

If you enjoy emotional romance, action-packed suspense, ranch settings, and close, meddling families, give this one a try. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Free-lance writer Sloan McKinley is at her wit’s end with her mother’s constant “When are you getting married?” Sloan is tired of the objectionable men her mother insists would be perfect for her. After enduring an embarrassing Thanksgiving with her family and while sharing a ride home with one of said objectionable men, Sloan is grateful for the interruption of a text from her best friend, Grier. Grier is in Indigo, Alaska wading through a legal mess in regards to her deceased father’s estate. She begs Sloan to come and lend support to which Sloan immediately accepts and views it as a pleasant escape from the hustle and bustle of New York City...and her mother.

Walker Montgomery is Grier’s lawyer and the grandson of the town’s mayor, Sophie Montgomery. Sophie and her two closest friends host an annual competition for bachelorettes to possibly (and hopefully) win the hearts of their grandsons. Soon after Sloan McKinley arrives, she decides to do a story about the competition—getting the scoop about the hosts, the events, and the competitors. Walker challenges her to enter the contest to get the story “right”. She agrees but only if he will enter the bachelor auction...something he has been able to avoid for years. He agrees and takes her on a tour of the town, which opens her eyes and shows her that Indigo isn’t what she thought it would be.

Baby It’s Cold Outside is the first book in Addison Fox’s Alaskan Nights series. I enjoyed this fun, sexy story set in a cozy, small town full of charming people. Sloan and Walker are intriguing characters who are instantly drawn to one another. For Sloan, coming to Indigo starts off as helping a friend, but turns into much more than that. It becomes a journey of self-discovery. She learns things about herself that she may never have learned had she not left home. This exchange between Sloan and Walker takes place while he shows her around Indigo:

“It’s beautiful. And unexpected. Pretty much like everything else in this town.”

“You haven’t been here that long.”

“And hardly anything is what I thought it would be.

“What were you expecting?” ...

... “I’ve spent my life in an environment that’s all about expectations. And I guess I never realized how many of them I had myself. It’s sort of an irritating discovery, truth be told.”

“Irritating?”

“Deeply.”

It was one of my favorite scenes between the two. Walker has his own demons to overcome and what he does for Sloan at the end of the book made me smile in a big way. :)

The secondary characters are appealing and add depth and it’s clear who will be paired up in the future books of the series. I’m just sad that I have to wait a whole year until my next trip to Indigo! Until then, I’ll simply revisit everyone in Baby It’s Cold Outside and recommend that you do, too!

“Astrology. Warriors. Astrology. Warriors. Hmmm…I wonder if that would work?”

A common enough question asked of authors is “Where do you get your ideas?” And while I certainly can’t explain it, I do know that there is an electrifying moment when you do have an idea that you think will work. There’s this crazy little zing that shoots its way up your spine that sort of pulses with “Yes, that just might work.”

And then, after you think about it for a few minutes, it gets a little louder…a little clearer. “Yes. That will work.”

The Sons of the Zodiac series was like that for me. I wish I knew the impetus for the idea – I was sitting there watching TV not even thinking about plotting or books – and the idea just sort of exploded inside my brain. But one thing was certain – once the idea took hold it just wouldn’t let me go. I am really enjoying the development of this series - taking these larger-than-life warrior heroes, their very human personality traits and a mythical back story that’s formed their lives and turning them loose in my imagination. Of course, the real fun kicks in when they’re confronted with the only woman who can possibly fulfill them for the rest of eternity!

As a writer, I love that “story zing,” but as a reader, I love when I have that exact same experience. It’s that electrifying moment when I pick up a book and just know – from the first few paragraphs – that I’m not going to put this book down. Anything written by Nora Roberts or Jayne Ann Krentz promises that ride for me. And I love it when I find an author I’ve not read or a new series that just pulls me in. The ICE series by Anne Stuart was one of those finds. The IMMORTALS AFTER DARK series by Kresley Cole continues to be one of those series for me. The CHOSEN series by Christina Dodd is just fantastic. And my dear friend, Jo Davis, writes the FIREFIGHTERS OF STATION FIVE series and I love each and every one of those gorgeous firefighters!

A recent find I can’t stop talking about is JK Beck’s new series, the Shadow Keepers. The first book is WHEN BLOOD CALLS and I am engrossed, hook, line and sinker.

Since we’re dishing today, what series are some of your favorites? Which authors pull you in, over and over, with a continued promise of telling a good story or what new authors have you found that you just can’t stop talking about?

And the relationship of the Warriors with each other makes me laugh. Ms. Fox is spot on with the "guy speak"---always ragging on each other, they are typical men, even if they are immortal. With the second book in her Sons of The Zodiac Series, Addison Fox has given her readers one more Warrior to fall in love with. With twelve zodiac signs---Gemini is a twin, so that's double the pleasure---that's a whole lot of Warriors to go around. Although this is the second book in the series---Warrior Ascended was the first---it can stand alone. But for maximum enjoyment, I highly recommend reading them in order. It's a fantastic series, and trust me, you won't want to miss a single moment!

Reading a new book by a debut author is always a treat, but when it's the beginning of a series it's like discovering buried treasure. And Warrior Ascended by Addison Fox is quite a find.

Millenia ago, Themis, the goddess of Justice, created a race of fierce warriors, each imbued with a special power of the zodiac and charged with protecting humanity from the darkest of evils.

Themis makes a bargain with her former husband, Zeus, to create her special band of warriors. He reluctantly agrees with the proviso that there must be a balance of good and evil.
