As a widower of 16 years, Mark is open to desire but he's had his "one love" and doesn't believe he can find that deep, forever kind of love again. Emma, a 37-year-old career woman, finally took a chance on marriage only to be jilted by her fiancé, who also happened to be her boss, and now finds herself single and unemployed, with not the slightest desire to throw her hat into that ring again. When You Touch Me is a well-constructed story of healing and hope set within the Kindle World of Roxanne St. Claire's Barefoot Bay. Baxter's characters are multi-layered and fully developed, with real-life issues to which I had no difficulty relating. And it's clear the author has done her research regarding PTSD and the issues facing soldiers returning from duty in the Middle East. Fans of St. Claire's Barefoot Bay series will enjoy cameos by some of her characters, especially Jamaican dynamo and Casa Blanca housekeeper Poppy, though readers new to the setting will lose nothing by not having read St. Claire's books first. When You Touch Me flows well, eliciting both laughter and tears, and left me with "full book" satisfaction even though it is a novella of only 117 pages. The secondary characters add to the richness of the story without detracting focus from the main characters and I'd love to see more of them. I'm especially intrigued by Jillian's sister and also by Sam's brother. I'm hoping Marilyn Baxter has plans to write more stories set within the Barefoot Bay Kindle World. I can't be the only one who wants to read them!

Welcome, Rocki!  I’ve been enjoying your Barefoot Bay books so much.  Each one makes me laugh, makes me cry and touches my heart in a profound way but your newest, Barefoot in Lace- book 2 in the Barefoot Bay Brides trilogy - has set a new standard.  In fact, it may just be my favorite of all the books you’ve written. Please tell our readers what they can expect from this book.

Wow, thank you! Barefoot in Lace was not an easy, breezy book to write (though I hope it reads that way!) so that compliment means the world to me.  Readers can expect a trip back to Barefoot Bay, my fictional island on the Gulf Coast of Florida.  Like every book in the series (loosely broken into three “sub” series – the original Barefoot Bay quartet, the Barefoot Bay Billionaires, and the Barefoot Bay Brides), this novel stands completely alone as a romance about two damaged souls who are healed and made whole by love.  Readers can expect an emotional ride, some laughs, some tears, plenty of romance, and visits from characters they may already know and love.  Oh, and a few lovely chapters in the south of France, just to liven things up a bit!

Gussie and Tom are both weighted down by emotional baggage.  What is it about these two that convinced you they could overcome their obstacles and find a happy ending together?

They “got” each other from the very beginning.  These are two people who, on the surface, are not at all what they seem to be.  Gussie is a wedding stylist who works for the Barefoot Brides, the destination wedding consultants based in Barefoot Bay, and she longs for a family to replace one she lost when her brother left home years ago.  Tom, an elite professional photographer, has experienced exquisite sadness and loss, but has coped by draping himself in a shroud of solitude.  When he’s given the guardianship of his twelve-year-old niece, he finds himself in an impossible situation – unable to reach her, unable to leave her, unable to return to his life alone.  Enter Gussie, who needs a wedding photographer ASAP, and seems to have a natural rapport with Tom’s niece.  They strike a deal, get very close, and begin to peel off layers (and clothes!) to discover…oh, you know.  A happy ending!   But it’s a tough road to getting there, I promise.

A tough road it may be but well worth the journey!

I’ve shed a few tears in more than one of your books but this story had me sobbing like a baby.  Do you have the same emotional reaction when you write the stories?

I’ll be honest – if I don’t shed a tear while writing a book, something is wrong.  Yes, I have an emotional reaction.  There are two scenes in particular that always make me tear up, no matter how many times I polish and revise – and in the course of writing a book, I can read (and rewrite and revise and improve) a scene at least twenty times!).  I’ve been getting a lot of email about those scenes, so I know my reaction matches readers, which is so reassuring!

Let’s talk about you a bit.  We’re just about to kick off the new fall TV season.  What new – or returning -shows are you looking forward to watching? 

OUTLANDER!!! I am absolutely breathless about the new series on STARZ.  I can almost not talk about how amazing it is.  I’d never read the book (not a huge historical fan – at least I didn’t think I was) but I heard some buzz about this show and was delighted to discover we actually have STARZ on my TV. (Who knew?) I watched about five minutes and was immediately invested.  After the second episode, I bought the book and DEVOURED it.  I watch every episode at least twice and each time I’m more blown away by this incredible storytelling.  The production is stunning, the acting superb, the writing perfect, and…Jamie.  Sam Heughan is all of the above. 

Like you, I hadn't read the books either but I've fallen in love with the STARZ production of OUTLANDER.  It's exquisite!

I love to be surprised by characters in the books I read.  What would readers be surprised to learn about you?

That’s a tough question, since I’ve been an “open book” for ten years, sharing much with my readers. Oversharing, perhaps.  Maybe they would be surprised to learn that one of my hobbies is taking sunrise pictures and turning them into “inspiring” wallpaper that I give away for free on my website! I’m a huge fan of college football and here in the south, tailgating is an important part of the experience. Let’s say you’re hosting a tailgating party and can invite ten couples from your books, who would you choose and why?  What favorite dishes would you serve?

Well, first of all, it would not be a tailgate party and it might not be a football game.  I’m not really a fan (though I am a Gator Mom and there are fans around me) but we love to host barbeques – and that counts as a southern tradition, right? I would be tempted to invite all of the Bullet Catchers and their beloveds (there were eleven books in that series, so we’d have to make room for an extra couple and, by now, a few babies).  That way, we could PLAY football (there’s often a game of touch football at Lucy Sharpe’s estate on Sundays, readers may recall) and admire teams up close and personal.  There are TEN Barefoot Bay books (or will be when the third in the Barefoot Brides comes out early next year) so that would make a very fun party, too.  On the beach and barefoot, of course!

Barbeques work just fine and I love the thought of all the Bullet Catchers back together! 

As you mentioned above, the third book in the Barefoot Bay Brides trilogy will be out next year.  Will you be returning to Barefoot Bay after that?  I admit, it’s become one of my favorite fictional places to visit!

YES! I am considering adding a little suspense and intrigue to my contemporary romances. I was one of many disappointed fans who mourned when Roxanne St. Claire announced she would be moving her writing focus from sizzling romantic suspense to emotional contemporary stories. Hi, Rocki!  Thanks for stopping by to chat about “Secrets on the Sand,” the first novella in your new The Billionaires of Barefoot Bay trilogy.  I was so happy to hear these novellas would be returning us to Barefoot Bay.  It’s become one of my favorite fictional places to visit.  Please tell our readers what to expect from this first story.

Hello and thank you so much for the invitation to be here! You know I love this blog and am delighted to answer questions, reply to comments, and, of course, give some beach books away!  Readers can expect a sexy-but-sweet hero, a determined-but-vulnerable heroine, a little heartache, a lot of romance, and a feel-good ending.  All for $2.99 on your ereader or Kindle app! And, readers can expect more billionaires, right around the corner in January and February.

I really liked Zeke and Mandy and wanted the best for them.  What would you like readers to understand about these two characters?

What a fun question.  I guess I’d like readers to understand that people change so much between high school and adult that they can be unrecognizable to each other.  But inside, they are the same person, despite failures or successes along the way.

Are you able to give us a sneak peek into the other novellas, “Seduction on the Sand” and “Scandal in the Sand?”  When will they be released?

All of the books are just over 40,000 words, so they are not short novellas -- they are about half the length of a book.  The billionaires in the books are all friends and they all share a love of baseball.  They play together on a recreational softball team in New York called The Niners (so named for the number of zeroes in their net worth) and, in the course of the first book, they decided to start a minor league baseball team in Barefoot Bay.  Seduction on the Sand is the story of real estate mogul Elliott Becker who has his eye on the last piece of land they need to close the deal, but the feisty goatherd who lives there has different ideas.  Scandal on the Sand is about billionaire bad-boy Nate Ivory, of the world-famous and insanely wealthy Ivory family.  He’s got a secret baby coming...and that’s going to shake a lot of worlds.

Your books have a tendency to keep me reading late into the night.  What’s the last book that kept you reading past your bedtime?

I would have to say SANCTUARY ISLAND by Lily Everett.  In fact...it gets a call out in Secrets on the Sand, that’s how much I love it.  (And the author!)

I second your recommendation of SANCTUARY ISLAND.  I loved it and was delighted to see the tie-in while reading Secrets on the Sand.  

We’re in a holiday frame of mind around here.  What Christmas, New Year’s or other holiday traditions are you looking forward to this month?

Every year, we do an over the top Italian Christmas Eve, called The Feast of the Seven Fishes.  And by “we,” of course I mean my husband the Italian Chef.  He pulls out all the stops and this nine or ten course feast is always the highlight of the season.

I love to bake, especially at this festive time of year.  What’s your favorite holiday treat?  Do you have a recipe to share with us?

This isn’t baking, but seafood crepes are of the very favorite dishes at our Christmas Eve feast.

Tasty shrimp and scallops rolled into a thin and delicate crepe and topped with a luxurious cream sauce, this rich and delicious entrée provides an exquisite showcase for the fruits of the sea.  My husband says the French try to take credit for the crepe…but the Italians perfected the crespelle!

Crespelle (Italian crepe)

• 2 large eggs
• 3/4 cup milk
• 1/2 cup water
• 1 cup flour
• 3 tablespoons melted butter
• 1/4 teaspoon salt

Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl using a whisk. Place the batter in the refrigerator for 1 hour. This allows the bubbles to subside so the crespelle will be less likely to tear during cooking. Heat a small non-stick pan or crepe pan and add butter to coat. Pour about an  ounce of batter into the center of the pan and swirl to spread evenly.  (The first one or two tries will be a bit messy but after a couple of tries they'll all come out perfectly.) Cook for 30 seconds and flip. Cook for another 10 seconds and remove to a cool plate  Continue until all batter is gone. After they have cooled you can stack them. They will be fine in the refrigerator for up to a couple of days. 

Seafood Filling (makes about one dozen crespelle)

• 12 oz. 21-25 size shrimp cleaned and deveined and cut into 3 pieces each
• 8 oz. scallops cut into similar size pieces as the shrimp
• 3 tbls. butter
• 1 large shallot chopped
• generous splash of cognac or brandy
• 1/4 cup heavy cream,
• large pinch of dried Thyme
• salt and white pepper to taste

Heat butter in sauté pan and sauté shallot a couple of minutes just until softened. Add seafood and cook on high heat for about 2 minutes. Add cognac (or brandy) and heat till alcohol evaporates (1 minute or so). Add thyme, salt, pepper, and cream. When adding cream, remember the consistency of the filling can be adjusted by how much you add. Cook another minute or so till cream slightly thickens. 

Remove from heat and fill and roll crespelle and place in a buttered 9 by 13 baking pan or glass oven dish.

Tomato Cream Sauce Topping

• 2 tbls. olive oil
• 1 medium onion, chopped
• 2 cloves of garlic minced
• 1 (28-ounce) can peeled  tomatoes (crush by hand)
• 1 tsp. thyme dried
• 1 tsp. basil, dried
• 1 whole bay leaves
• 1/2 tsp. sugar
• Salt and pepper to taste

Over medium heat, heat oil in a large pot until hot. Add onion and garlic, sauté for 3 to 5 minutes until the onions begin to appear translucent. Add the herbs and stir.  Add tomatoes. Sprinkle in sugar, and a splash of Marsala wine. Add salt and pepper. Lower the heat and simmer for about 30 minutes, uncovered. Stir occasionally.
Prior to saucing the crespelle before baking, add some cream to lighten the tomato sauce.

Bake the crespelle for about 10 minutes in pre-heated 350 degree oven, then top with tomato cream sauce. 

Serve immediately and enjoy!!

Christmas!! But when not shopping, wrapping, and spreading cheer, I’m finishing up the last of the Billionaire books and planning the Barefoot Brides trilogy -- coming this summer and fall!
