Review - - Threat of Danger

Threat of Danger
By Dana Marton
Publisher: Montlake Romance
Release Date: June 5, 2018
Reviewed by PJ

Jess Taylor and Derek Daley share a long history: childhood neighbors, first loves, and three horrific days held captive by a killer who was never caught. Neither of them stayed in their small Vermont town after their escape from the killer ten years ago and neither of them has fully dealt with the emotional fallout of their ordeal. Derek joined the Navy, became a SEAL, and is now a bestselling author of crime thrillers while Jess moved cross-country and is now one of Hollywood's top stuntwomen. They have not kept in touch but they have never forgotten.

When a family emergency calls Jess back to her hometown she's stunned to discover Derek living in his family home nextdoor. When the emergency necessitates a longer stay than the few days Jess had planned, the feelings she and Derek shared as teens begin to flicker back to life and, gradually, a happy ending for the two becomes a possibility. But someone with unfinished business from ten years ago is determined to write a different ending.

Once again, Dana Marton has penned a fast-paced, pulse-pounding romantic thriller that had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. From the first few pages of the prologue, I knew I was in for a wild ride and even though I was almost certain I knew the villain's identity mid-way through the book it didn't take anything away from the intensity of the story. Marton's hero and heroine are vividly portrayed and their stories related in such a way that I felt as though I was there with them every step of the way. The emotions - fear, guilt, resentment, love - that have battered both Jess and Derek over the years have affected them in different ways but have molded them into the strong, complex people who come together again to take back their lives from the person who changed them so fundamentally ten years ago and waits to finish the job today.

Derek is a likable character who evokes empathy almost immediately while Jess is a bit more difficult to warm to. As her backstory unfolds, however, and what she endured following the abduction is revealed, she becomes a much more sympathetic character. And as she reconnects with friends and family she left behind, I began to warm to her more and more until I was actively cheering for her and her happiness. The secondary cast that surrounds Derek and Jess is vital to the story and to the journey of the past ten years, especially for Jess. Familial relationships are at the center of critical decisions she made when she was eighteen as well as those she faces in the present and forgiveness necessary to her future happiness. And then there's the truly vile villain. Let's just say I was supremely satisfied when justice was served in that corner too.

Threat of Danger is the second book in Marton's Mission Recovery series but is a standalone story. If you enjoy a breath-stealing, romantic suspense thriller with a solid mystery and a second-chance romance at its heart, this is a book that's sure to appeal.

Sneak Peek Excerpt & Giveaway - - Threat of Danger

Threat of Danger
By Dana Marton
Publisher: Montlake Romance
Release Date: June 5, 2018

Jess Taylor and Derek Daley were in the throes of first love in a small Vermont town when they were kidnapped by a serial killer. They escaped his clutches—but not the trauma of the unsolved crime. With their lives changed forever and their romance cut short, they went their separate ways to exorcise their fears.
Jess is living on the edge as Hollywood’s hottest stuntwoman. It’s no longer terror thrumming through her veins. It’s adrenaline. Derek is a former Navy SEAL spinning his ordeals into heart-pounding bestselling thrillers. But when Jess is called home on a family emergency, she must face the past—and face the man she left behind, who is just as haunted and, like her, still so much in love.
Now, as an old flame reignites, Jess and Derek are taking advantage of second chances and putting their bad memories behind them. But here, in the quiet town of Taylorville, a killer is getting a second chance as well.

THREAT OF DANGER
Excerpt

Common sense said to walk away. She’d worked hard to make a life for herself in LA that worked for her.

Screw common sense. He stepped forward and reached around her, looped his fingers around her slim wrists, and tugged her hands from her pockets. Then he took those hands and drew her closer to him.

“Derek . . .”

“I wasn’t sure if you’d ever come back.”

“I’m only back temporarily.”

“Is that how you left things with Eliot?” That she’d be going after him soon? His mouth tightened at the thought.

“He had to go. He had meetings scheduled with directors. And new equipment coming in that he has to test and make decisions on before the next shoot.”

When she talked about Eliot, she talked about the business. That gave Derek hope. Sounded like they’d parted as friends and colleagues, not as lovers who couldn’t wait to reunite.

Two and a half weeks left, at the most. He knew her shooting schedule from talking with Zelda. About eighteen days more before Jess had to report to the set. So why in hell was he wasting time?

He dipped his head and brushed his lips over hers. He’d gotten lost once in the Iraqi desert for three days. He hadn’t been as thirsty for water back then as he was now for a taste of Jess.

When she didn’t protest, he pulled her fully into his arms and kissed her.

The point of no return. He needed to find out if things could still work between them. He wanted her, and he could no longer pretend that he didn’t.

Her body was firm, but her lips were soft and silky, as sweet as Zelda’s prizewinning angel food cake. As sweet as the old Jess. Except, this new Jess, she was a woman. She had the power to bring Derek to his knees.

He’d told her that he would give her whatever she needed from him. He hoped she’d figure out that he was what she needed. He was going to have to help her reach that conclusion.

He breathed her in. She smelled like redemption. Like maybe he could have a do-over and get it right this time.

She stood still in the circle of his arms. Undecided. Wary.

Better than a sharp knee in the balls, but Derek wanted more. He nibbled her lips and licked the seam, tasting her.

She tasted like a whole new world opening up. She tasted like the blank page of a book before he’d written the first word, the possibilities limitless.

Was the story of his life written on her heart? Was the story of her life written on his?

Too early to tell. But he wanted to find out. Letter by letter, word by word, sentence by sentence. If only she’d let him.

She did let him in, let him deepen the kiss. Progress, but this was just the opening of her lips, not the opening of her heart. Still, Derek wouldn’t have been a good SEAL if he didn’t grab every advantage, no matter how small. And, really, the kiss could not be called small by any measure.

As he swept into Jess’s mouth, he felt his boundaries expand. Need rushed in, and filled him like water flooding into a torpedoed submarine. He sank onto the seabed of things he always wanted but never believed he could have. Jess’s forgiveness . . . and more.

All these years, he’d thought her forgiveness was all he wanted.

He’d been stupid.

He wanted thisJess. And he knew in that moment that he was going to do whatever it took to get her and keep her. Eliot couldn’t have her, no matter how handsome he was, or how much they had in common, or how hot women thought it was that the guy was some grandmaster of stunts.

Derek wasn’t going to let Eliot have Jess. He didn’t care if the guy jumped out of a burning helicopter, tied hand and foot, with a ticking bomb in his backpack, and got an Oscar nomination in every single category for the performance.

Sale Spotlight - - FLASH FIRE by Dana Marton

NY Times bestselling author Dana Marton is excited to announce that FLASH FIRE (A Navy SEAL Romance), the 2016 RITA Winner for Romantic Suspense, will be on sale for just $0.99 for one week from 7/25/16 - 7/31/16. FLASH FIRE was one of my favorite romantic suspense novels of 2015. Here's what I had to say about the book when it was released last November:

Dana Marton is one of my favorite romantic suspense authors. I know when I pick up one of her books that I'm about to be treated to a compelling, fast-paced story that will keep my heart in my throat and my nerves on edge. Clara Roberts, the heroine of FLASH FIRE is a character I cheered for from beginning to end. A buttoned-up former accountant now working to retrieve American citizens lost, kidnapped, or imprisoned abroad, her world is turned upside down with a single phone call that sends her into the Mexican jungle with ruthless former SEAL, Light Walker. ::Sigh:: What can I say about Walker. He's a tortured soul, bent on revenge, and not about to let anyone get in his way, least of all Clara. With determination as solid as his rock-hard body, it's difficult to believe there's even a kernel of softness remaining within him but, slowly, without trying, our heroine burrows her way into his heart and soul. Will it be enough to save him from his course of destruction?

Buckle up and get ready for another wild ride from Dana Marton's FLASH FIRE. I highly recommend it!

FLASH FIRE: A Navy SEAL Romance
By Dana Marton
Self-Published e-book
Release Date: November 10, 2015

A brand new, gripping novel of romantic suspense from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Dana Marton.

When an American teenager disappears abroad, Clara Roberts, a by-the-book investigator on a secret mission, joins forces with Light Walker, an ex-SEAL turned lawless mercenary, to save her. The sparks they generate—and the trouble they stir up—threaten to set the jungle ablaze. Nothing is what it seems in this fast-paced romantic thriller. As attraction grows into love, looming danger turns into all-out war, and the whole region explodes around them. Clara and Walker must hold on to each other and race against time to survive.

EXCERPT from FLASH FIRE:

…the front door banged open, and she turned that way, still hoping for her travel guide, finding herself staring at a mercenary who looked like he’d just stepped out of one of those high-testosterone video games.
A machete strapped to his back, a semiautomatic slung over his shoulder, and an army knife on his belt, he walked into the cantina with a swagger that said he could beat any man in town, and could take any woman to bed. If he wanted.
He was taller than the locals, his hair a few shades lighter, a couple of days’ worth of bristle covering the lower half of his face. He wore army boots, cargo pants, and a black T-shirt that did nothing to conceal a distracting amount of muscle. White flashed as he chomped on the cigar between his teeth, his eyes covered by sunglasses.
Clara slid down in her chair and inched farther into the shadows as she watched him. Okay, so Pedro wasn’t alpha dog of the local pack. This guy was most definitely the top predator in Furino. His body language seemed completely relaxed, yet power emanated from his every pore.
All around, hands surreptitiously migrated to the tops of the tables, as if making sure the newcomer didn’t accidentally misinterpret any move as someone going for a weapon.
The mercenary took the empty stool at the far end of the bar. He didn’t ask for a drink. The bartender poured him one anyway. He didn’t so much as cock an eyebrow at a woman. But Margarita went to sit on his lap and rubbed against his well-built chest like a cat. She just about purred.
The waitress’s lustrous mahogany hair tumbled to her waist in waves, curling and swinging all over the place. She looked wild and free. Clara touched a hand to the strict bun tucked under her baseball hat.
The mercenary tossed back his drink with one hand while putting the other one on Margarita’s bare knee, running his palm up her thigh, under her short red skirt. He bent to her neck and nibbled her. Or maybe whispered something into her ear, because Margarita threw back her head and laughed.
One second Clara was glaring at them with annoyed disapproval, and the next she suddenly felt her own skin heat, as if the man was touching her, his callused palm running over her naked skin. A long-neglected part of her body tingled, waving a flag, Hey, remember me?
At the bar, Margarita flattened her palms against the muscles of the mercenary’s chest and caressed them, moving lower and lower.
Clara blinked. What the hell was wrong with them? Then she clenched her jaw. What the hell was wrong with her?
It had to be the heat. A dozen fans whirled overhead, swirling the hot, humid air without providing much relief.
The mercenary chatted on with the bartender, as if being publicly fondled was par for the course for him, certainly nothing to remove his sunglasses over.
Appalling. Both his behavior, and that Clara would feel hot and bothered from simply watching the outrageous bastard.
Then he finally slid off his glasses, and the next second his unerring gaze pinned Clara, and it was too late to turn away or slide down in her chair, because he’d caught her watching him.
He gave a knowing smirk as he shooed the waitress off his lap and patted her curvy behind. He never looked at the woman again as he sauntered toward Clara, over six feet of pure muscle and laser-focused attention.
The scene should have been the opening shot of an action movie—light glinting off hills of muscles, determination in every masculine move, a cock-sure grin. Casting directors all over Hollywood would have peed their pants at the sight of this guy.
He dropped into the chair across from Clara, his muscled thighs spread. She clamped her own thighs together. His white teeth flashed in the dim light of the cantina as he chomped on his cigar and took stock of her.
“Are you lost, Cupcake?” His I’m-a-bad-boy-and-you-know-it voice scraped along her nerve endings. He was definitely American. East Coast, if she had to guess from his accent.
Her grandmother used to say there were men the devil put on Earth to test good women. Clara was tempted to ask the guy whether he’d just zip-lined in from hell.
“Go away,” she said instead.
His voice dipped. “How can I, when your eyes begged me to come over?”
She rolled said eyes so hard, she might have caused permanent damage.
One: she hadn’t begged in her life.
Two: the only thing she wanted was to hit him over the head with the bottle of tequila between them on the table. She was trying to keep a low profile, and he was drawing every eye to them.
He smiled around his cigar. “What’s your name?”
DOD Investigator Clara Roberts, she badly wanted to say to wipe the superior smirk off his face. “None of your business.”
His eyes were a brilliant multi-color green like the rain forest, alive and full of secrets. He let his gaze travel over her chest from left to right, then from right to left with undisguised disappointment.
He tsked. “No tits, no manners.” He shook his head. “You should try to have at least one or the other. A pair of great tits covers a multitude of sins.”
When his gaze reached hers again, the very fires of hell glinting in his eyes, he said magnanimously, “Don’t worry about it, Cupcake. You look like the brainy type. Believe it or not, that appeals to some men. I think I read that somewhere.” He edged his chair forward, until their knees touched under the table.
A tingle ran up her thighs at the contact. She shifted her legs away from his. “Please leave.”
“I can’t. You need me.” He flashed an infuriatingly cocky grin. “Walker.”
A who? Her mouth dropped open. Light Walker? The hippie travel guide Walker? The one she’d been picturing with long, thinning hair, wearing a tie-dye shirt?

How on earth did her father even know a man like this? And why on earth would he send his daughter to him?

Spotlight on Dana Marton and Broslin Bride (Gone and Done it)

Have you been reading Dana Marton's Broslin Creek romantic suspense series?  It only took one book to hook me on this small Pennsylvania town and it's fascinating inhabitants.  The newest addition to the series is Broslin Bride (Gone and Done it), 195 pages of humor, heart, suspense, romance and more twists and turns than a mountain road.  It's the fifth book in the Broslin Creek series but stands well on its own.

Fyi...the Broslin Bride epilogue contains a spoiler for Deathwatch, the first book in the series. You can download Deathwatch FREE at most sites. You can also read my review of Deathwatch here.

Looking for an entertaining story for a summer afternoon? Give Broslin Bride - or any of the Broslin Creek books - a try!  ~PJ

The worst time to be charged with murder is:

a.  When you have no alibi for the night in question.
b.  When you have no memory of the night in question.
c.  When you told people you hated the victim.
d.  When the detective is the first guy you ever slept with--which didn't end well.

Check all the above for Luanne Mayfair.  If it wasn't for bad luck, she wouldn't have any luck at all.  Okay, maybe a little luck.  As it turns out, Detective Chase Merritt doesn't hold grudges.

He still looks at Luanne just as he did in high school, except he's grown some serious 'hot cop' muscles -- very distracting when Luanne is trying to avoid the very law Chase represents.

Is she the killer?  Is she being framed?  Is she the next victim?  As Chase and Luanne race to find some answers, danger and heat ratchet up in this fast-paced, romantic mystery that will stop your heart one second, then steal it in the next.

Broslin Bride Excerpt:

Luanne Mayfair might have killed her boss a little. Fine, a lot. Pretty much all the way. God, that sounded bad. But he was a sleazebag. Honest. The maids at the Mushroom Mile Motel that Earl Cosgrove managed often prayed for lightning to strike the lecherous bastard. Alas, God had seen fit to send Luanne instead.
Now you’ve gone and done it, she thought the morning after as she stood on the sidewalk in front of the fifties ranch home she rented in her hometown of Broslin, PA. She squinted against the early summer sun. Her red 1989 Mustang sitting by the curb had come from the used-car lot with its share of nicks and dents. But the damage to the front was new.
Gone and done it.
She’d done a horrible, terrible, despicable thing. Guilt and regret made her knees wobble. Whatever the punishment was, she deserved it.
Except, she couldn’t go to prison. She had her four-year-old twin sisters to take care of. She was Mia and Daisy’s sole guardian.
Luanne drew air in big, gulping breaths to wrestle down the shock and nausea. Get moving. One foot in front of the other. She couldn’t stand there and stare all morning. She had to find a way to get away with murder.

Readers, do you enjoy humor in your romances?

Do you like short books that you can read in one day?

Are you a fan of multi-book series?

Luanne is guardian of her four-year-old twin sisters.  How do you feel about children in the romances you read?

Review - - Deathwatch

Deathwatch
By Dana Marton
Publisher:  Independent
Release Date:  August 16, 2013

Kate Bridges thought attending her own funeral would be the hardest part.

As first lines go, that one's a winner.  Dana Marton grabbed my attention with that first sentence and proceeded to take me on a roller coaster ride filled with chills, thrills, sizzling emotion and non-stop action. I was riveted to this story from beginning to end, so much so that I read the entire book in one afternoon and then immediately downloaded the other books in the Broslin Creek series.  This author knows how to write romantic suspense!

Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  When Kate Bridges visits a childhood friend she ends up being the only witness in the world who can identify a notorious assassin, an assassin who will stop at nothing until he silences Kate forever.  When an attempt to kill her leaves her seriously injured but alive, the FBI announces her death then takes her into protective custody and sets a trap for the killer...at Kate's funeral. The trap goes wrong, the killer escapes and Kate, knowing nobody can keep her safe, flees for her life.

Eighteen months later...

For Kate, the past eighteen months have been a series of small towns, odd jobs and never, ever letting down her guard.  When she awakens in the middle of the night to find a large man towering over her bed she's sure her time has run out.

Returning home from Afghanistan, wounded in body and spirit, Murphy Dolan, an Army Reserve soldier and Broslin Creek police officer, is shocked to discover his brother has taken it upon himself to earn a little extra cash by renting out Murphy's house.  Murphy wants the woman gone.  Kate has no place to go.  Neither one trusts the other.

Kate has had a rough life including childhood abuse and a series of foster homes before she and her baby sister were finally adopted by a loving couple when Kate was twelve. Those parents are responsible for the person Kate is today - strong, courageous and caring.  Kate misses her family terribly, as well as the traumatized children she treated in her career, but she doesn't regret her decision to let people believe she's died.  Keeping her secret is the only way to keep the people she loves safe.

Murph's cop instincts are working overtime.  It's obvious Kate is terrified and also hiding something.  He won't let her stay in his home unless she tells him everything and when she does...everything changes. Murph's protective instincts kick in and he's determined to keep her safe, especially as they grow closer and feelings between them begin to deepen.  But even though they're working together, Kate still battles her fear and Murph's PTSD demons won't subside.  When clues point to a villain on the scene, Murph is certain the assassin has tracked Kate to Broslin Creek but Kate wonders...what does she really know about Murph? Is it the assassin she needs to fear or have the post-deployment demons that plague Murphy finally caused him to snap?  And will she figure out who is the good guy and who isn't before it's too late?

This is an outstanding book.  The only thing that kept it from being a 5 star read for me were some loose ends at the conclusion of the book.  I admit it, I prefer things tied up nice and pretty.  However, even though this is the third Broslin Creek book to be published, it's the first story, chronologically, so perhaps my questions will be answered in the other books.  I'll find out soon!
