Tour Review - - Playing for Keeps

Playing for Keeps

Heartbreaker Bay - Book 7

If you’re planning on falling in love…
When it comes to the confident, charismatic Caleb Parker, Sadie Lane feels the spark—the kind that comes from rubbing each other the wrong way. She’s yoga pants, he’s a suit. She’s a tattoo artist, he’s a straight-laced mogul. But after they accidentally co-rescue an abandoned dog from a storm, Sadie sees a vulnerable side to the seemingly invincible hottie.
you’d better be sure…
Caleb doesn’t do emotions. Growing up the underdog, he’s learned the hard way to build up an impenetrable wall. Perfect for business. Disastrous for relationships. He’s never worried about it before—not until he finally gets behind Sadie’s armor and begins to fall.
… someone is there to catch you.
Both guarded and vulnerable, Sadie and Caleb are complete opposites. Or are they? Shocked at their undeniable connection, can they ever admit to wanting more? That all depends on what they’re each willing to risk.

My thoughts:

I really loved this story. Among all the books of Jill Shalvis's career, I think it stands out as one of her best with Sadie and Caleb as one of my favorite Shalvis couples. Talk about your complex characters. As their back stories began to unfold, revealing the events that have brought them to this point in their lives, I wanted to hug them both and then cheer for how far they've come. Sadie's story just about broke my heart. As it unfolded, it was easy to see why she was prickly and determined to keep her past a secret, why she was so certain revealing her true self would deem her unlovable. Caleb, of course, is much more than his appearance would suggest as well, as Sadie comes to discover. I adored him for his tenderness, patience, and staunch support of Sadie, even though he does hit a few potholes along the way. It's a rocky road to a happy ending for these two but oh, so worth it in the end.

Shalvis surrounds Sadie and Caleb with an eclectic group of secondary characters who bring an added richness to the story. Leading the pack, of course, is Lollipop, the three-legged stray dog Sadie and Caleb co-rescue. I fell just as hard for this adorable pup as they did. Joining Lollipop are the heart-of-gold motorcycle club guys at the tattoo shop where Sadie works, Ivy, the taco truck owner who gives Sadie insight into the fact that Caleb is much more than the appearance he projects with his perfect, high-dollar suits, Caleb's overprotective, if well-intentioned, mother and sisters, Sadie's misguided and dismissive family, and Naoki, an important character in Caleb's life whose contributions to this story are endearingly poignant. They all come together to create a heart-tugging, emotional, romantic journey that is going straight to my keeper shelf.

If you enjoy character-driven contemporary romance with emotional depth, humor, charm, complex issues, and hard-won happy endings, I highly recommend Playing for Keeps. This book is not only going straight to my keeper shelf, it's also going to my Best of 2019 watch list.

Don't let the fact that this is the 7th book in a series scare you off. While a few previously introduced characters make appearances, this book stands on its own.

Excerpt

“Sadie.”
She shook her head.
“Look at me. Please?”
It was the damn please that had her opening her eyes. He’d closed the gap so that if she so much as took a breath, they’d be touching.
So she did just that. She took a deep breath, and then their bodies were up against each other, his warm and hard. Everywhere. “What’s happening?” she whispered.
“I believe you’re deciding between kicking me in the nuts and kissing me.” One side of his mouth curved very slightly as he lifted their still joined hands above her head, against the wall.
“But that last part might just be in my dreams.”
“Yes,” she whispered.
“Yes, it’s just in my dreams?”
She meant to say yes again, she really did.
She even opened her mouth to say it, because this was insane, this incredible . . . craving she had for him. It made no sense. Less than no sense, and yet . . .
She went up on tiptoe and touched her mouth to his.

Blog Tour Review - - About That Kiss

About That Kiss
By Jill Shalvis
Publisher: Avon
Release Date: January 23, 2018

Kylie Masters is doing her best to forget the unforgettable kiss she shared with Joe Malone. The man may be a woman’s fantasy in the flesh, but Kylie has seen enough of her mother’s mistakes with commitment-phobic tough guys to know that is not what she needs in her life—or so she tells herself. But when a small penguin sculpture, the only memento she has of her beloved grandfather, an artist in woodwork, disappears and she is bombarded with penguin in jeopardy photos, she turns to ex-military, current security professional Joe for help.

Joe grew up poor and rough, doing what he needed to do after his mother’s death to take care of his younger sister, Molly, and his father, a veteran suffering from severe PTSD, even when it was illegal. Enforced military enlistment turned his life around, but he is still a lone wolf, devoted to his family but leery of romantic relationships that involve more than the moment. Despite the example of his friend and boss Archer Hunt and Elle Wheaten (Accidentally on Purpose), Joe is a skeptic when it comes to love, and he is not happy that he can’t get Kylie Masters out of his mind—or his heart.

As Joe and Kylie work together to solve the mystery of the penguin and an increasing threat to Kylie, the chemistry between them grows more explosive and more difficult to resist. Can these two make peace with their pasts and learn to trust their feelings for one another?

About That Kiss is the fifth entry in Shalvis’s popular Heartbreaker Bay series. It has the humor, the tribal connections, and the sizzle that have been trademarks of this series and of Shalvis’s romances generally. Kylie is smart and independent with an appealing vulnerability balanced by a healthy sense of self-worth. Joe is strong, tough, and more comfortable with actions than with words. They are an engaging couple, and the supporting characters, particularly Molly Malone, add interest and winsomeness to the story.

Chasing Christmas Eve, the novel that preceded this one, was my favorite in the series. Perhaps that is why I found this one a bit of a letdown. It has all the right ingredients, but I just never felt the connection that Shalvis at her best evokes.  The romantic comedy-suspense mix seemed a bit off to me. I found myself more interested in what is the setup for the story of Molly and Lucas than in the central romance. Regardless, the magnetism of the Heartbreaker Bay core group is still potent, and canine lovers will be charmed by Kylie’s dog, Vinnie. Family dynamics also add appeal. If you are a fan of the Heartbreaker Bay series, you will not want to miss this one. If you are new to the series, other novels are probably better entry points. Book 6, Slow Winter Nights, Molly and Lucas’s story, will be released in September 2018, another Heartbreaker Bay Christmas story. That one is definitely high on my TBR list.

Review - - Accidentally on Purpose

Accidentally on Purpose
By Jill Shalvis
Publisher: Avon
Release Date: January 24, 2017

Elle Wheaton is smart, assertive, and tough. She is a whiz at her job as the general manager of the Pacific Pier Building, and she has found her tribe in the core group of fiercely loyal friends who work in the building and in surrounding businesses. She is also ambitious, devoting time and money to pursuing a degree in accounting. Her life now is very different from the difficult one she knew as a child. However, Archer Hunt, head of Hunt Investigations, is an ever-present reminder of her troubled past. She cannot ignore him, despite her efforts to do so. She cannot forget what she owes him, and she cannot control his effect on her libido.

Archer has unobtrusively kept an eye on Elle over the years since he blew his cover on an undercover operation in order to protect a then-sixteen-year-old Elle and ended his career as a cop in the process. It was he who recommended her to Spencer a year ago for the general manager’s job. But Elle is no longer that vulnerable teenager; she has become a smart, sassy, sexy woman. Archer has promised himself that he will keep ignoring how attracted he is to the grown-up Elle because she deserves someone who will not remind her of a past she has fought to escape. He keeps his promise until he has to watch Elle dating someone else. However, moving from friends (of a sort) to lovers is complicated by their shared past, which is not as past as they thought. Old enemies pose present danger, and Archer will have a close call, retreat to his default attitude, and be forced to do some major groveling before he and Elle begin their HEA.

Accidentally on Purpose is the third book in Shalvis’s Heartbreaker Bay series, and it has the clever repartee, sizzling attraction, and friends-as-family theme that delighted fans of the first two books. The tension between Elle and Archer in those books signaled readers that these two were meant for each other, and their story has been highly anticipated. The story has sufficient steam and emotional power in the romance and in the characters’ separate family complications to please lovers of sexy contemporary romance who are just discovering Shalvis as well as eager readers already enamored of Elle and Archer.

I belong to the latter group. I like the tribe of friends Shalvis has created for this series, and I like the San Francisco setting. I began reading this book already invested in seeing Elle and Archer finally become a couple. With characters as stubborn as these two, a push-pull relationship was almost a given, but it seemed to me that the sequence of no-yes-no became a bit repetitious—not enough to ruin the story but enough to make it less than a five-star read. The flaw is a minor one, however, and the book is still a winning addition to a solid series. It is a must for those who enjoyed the first two books, and I recommend it to readers who like a mix of sizzle, humor, and heart in their contemporary romance reads.

Next up is Chasing Christmas Eve (September 26, 2017)—Spencer’s story. That’s the one for which I have been waiting most eagerly. I’ve already preordered my copy.

Review - - Sweet Little Lies

Sweet Little Lies
By Jill Shalvis
Heartbreaker Bay, Book 1
Publisher: Avon
Release Date: June 28, 2016

I have a confession: I’m typically not a fan of books with “lie” or “lies” in the title. I suppose that stems from the fact that I don’t particularly care for stories where one of the leads withholds the truth from the other. And it’s only natural to assume that with “lie” or “lies” in the title, someone is holding on to a big, fat lie. (Though, yes, sometimes keeping a lie—big or small—is justified.) Having said that, I am a fan of books by Jill Shalvis, so I was certainly willing to give Sweet Little Lies a chance. I’m so glad I did. *grin*

Pru Harris is captain of a day cruise ship in the San Francisco Bay area. Since her parents died when she was nineteen, Pru has been somewhat of a loner. After she moves into her new apartment, she meets a few people who quickly welcome her into their circle. One of those people is Finn O’Riley, the owner of the pub next door. It doesn’t take long for Pru to find it difficult to think of him as only a friend. After all, he is a hottie and a really nice guy. She wants only the best for Finn, so she makes a wish for him when throwing a coin into the courtyard fountain. Unbeknownst to her, Pru gets more than she bargains for!

Sweet Little Lies is the first of a new series and a terrific contemporary romance! It contains Shalvis’s trademark snappy dialogue and characters you fall in love with set in the big, beautiful city of San Francisco. I absolutely love Pru. She is such a selfless person that you can’t help but root for her. The fact that she’s never had a really close relationship fuels her insecurity that she might be unlovable. Oh, how my heart went out to her. It’s not hard for readers to fall in love with Finn. He owns O’Riley’s with his younger brother, Sean. Finn raised Sean after their father’s death, and he gave up a lot in order to do so. Finn is responsible and steadfast, while Sean is carefree and easygoing. Finn is the kind of guy you can rely on and wouldn’t hesitate to give you the shirt off his back. It’s no wonder Pru makes a wish for him!

I also love the close group of friends. They are so incredibly likeable and funny that, at times, I was reminded of one of my favorite TV shows, Friends. I look forward to their stories in upcoming books. Adding to the humor is the homeless Old Guy and Pru’s neighbor, Mrs. Winslow. Oh my goodness, I found myself laughing out loud repeatedly! (Side note: I read much of this book while my family was on vacation. My husband did a lot of driving, so of course, I read. I lost track of how many times I received funny looks from him when I busted out laughing.) Throw in a cute mutt named Thor, a crazy game of darts, and perfectly worded hashtag epigraphs with each chapter, and you’ve got yourself a winner. Don’t miss out on this one!
