Today's Special -- Kimberly Killion

Reading, Writing, and Retreat!

Hello, ladies! Thanks for having me back on The Romance Dish. I’m visiting you from a B&B in Tim-buk-tu Missouri. I’m perched on the side of a bluff (not literally) overlooking the frozen Mississippi with a fresh dropping of 10 inches of snow on the ground. The birds are fat and the company I’ve surrounded myself with is brilliant! Stick around…

One of the best perks of being an author is having great friends to share your grins and groans with. Aside from passing emails back and forth between critique partners and hooking up at conference, the best perk is going away on a retreat. That’s where I’m at now and this one has been an adventure like no other. Of course, I’m sharing company with some of the greatest minds in the biz. Eileen Dreyer, who has NEVER A GENTLEMAN coming out in March is always entertaining. The brilliant mind of Elizabeth Grayson never ceases to amazing me. Then I’m fortunate enough to be sharing company with Carol Monk and the infamous Patricia Rice. And if they aren’t entertaining enough, Angie Fox is always good for a laugh.

We started out drawing straws to see who got to brainstorm first. I won! And I got some amazing feedback for my next story I started yesterday! Woo-hoo! I’m going to remain all mysterious about the story. Holla all you want, but that’s just how I roll. *vwg*

Next we moved on to Eileen’s next trilogy in the Drake’s Rake series…YES! There’s going to be more of those devilish stories. All I’ll tell you is that there’s a Drake and he’s a rake. I think you’ll all be excited to know that some of the great dames in Romance publishing, Elizabeth and Carol, and hard at work on new and exciting stories, and Patricia Rice is moving toward a contemporary psychic romance. Sounds cool, huh?!

And this afternoon, we brainstormed book two of Angie Fox’s next super series, THE MONSTER MASH! I’ll just say, for anyone who read the DEMON SLAYER series, this next series she is working on is going to blow you away!

Now, aside from brainstorming, we eat, and sleep, and write, and drink, and read, and eat, and write…well, you get the gist of it.

So, I know you all have questions. I've got the goods on these gals. What do you want to know...?

Review -- Educating Aphrodite

Educating Aphrodite
by Kimberly Killion
Publisher: Ellora’s Cave
Release Date: January 5, 2011

The light-blue silk choker that matched her eyes seemed to tighten around an expanding knot of frustration. She swallowed it hard and raised her pale lashes to Delacroix. “Sebastian and I have not been…intimate since I conceived Edward.”

The angry lines between Delacroix’s dark brows disappeared. He scrubbed his tightly groomed black beard in obvious astonishment. “Your son is nearly a year old.”

Shame burned her face and stung her eyes. Alexandra bit back the tears and looked down the expanse of her fashionable gold gown trimmed with frills and flounces and lace. At twenty-three, she was fit and well-kept and upheld her role as Countess of Warwick with elegance and grace, but hidden beneath layers of perfumed petticoats was a woman that no longer appealed to her husband. “It has taken me months to accept the fact Sebastian no longer desires me.”

Alexandra Falkner, Countess of Warwick, has come to the realization her husband, the Earl of Warwick, does not desire her in any way. What else is a woman to think when there have been no acts of intimacy in the marriage bed since the conception of their first child almost 2 years ago? Determined to get her husband back into the marriage bed, Alexandra employs the help of her husband’s best friend, the sexy Vincent Delacroix. Known for his hypnosis techniques, Vincent reluctantly agrees to hypnotize Alexandra in an attempt to eliminate her inhibitions and to teach her the ways of a temptress.

Perhaps this was madness. Perhaps loneliness drove her toward lunacy, but she was desperate to rekindle the passion in her marriage. Unfortunately, she lacked the courage and experience to accomplish her task without Delacroix’s assistance.

As the hypnosis begins to work and the walls of propriety crumble, Alexandra becomes more comfortable, in fact more confident, in her skin. Every woman has the ability to be sexy and confident and it all starts with her brain. Soon, the lessons of seduction by Delacroix encompass Alexandra’s world, soliciting new emotions and experiences from her. Alexandra quickly finds herself questioning just how far she will go to get her husband back in bed. And I must say, Alexandra goes pretty far.

Kimberly Killion is an author I have enjoyed reading since her debut in 2008. Her writing is witty, sexy and quickly pulls you in to the story. And this novella is no different. But this is not your traditional romance story. There is a happily ever after, even though it is very unconventional. While I am more of a traditional romance reader, I still enjoyed this story. It is a fun read with a great twist at the end. If you are looking for a great quick read, one that is scorching hot and by no means conventional, then this novella is for you.

Today's Special -- Kimberly Killion

Who is this Kimberly Killion anyway?

KIMBERLY KILLION, the designer…

TRD: What is Hot Damn Designs? And how are you affiliated with it?

KK: www.HotDamnDesigns.com is my graphic design company. I work almost exclusively with those involved in the Romance Community. At least that’s where I tend to stretch my networking legs. I do a lot of book cover designs for authors putting up their backlist, but I also build websites, and design bookmarks and business cards…I do it all really. ;)

TRD: You’ve recently launched a new website called www.HotDamnStock.com. What inspired you to create it?

KK: I’ve been designing for romance authors for many years now and the hardest part of any project was finding the right image. I spent hours upon hours searching stock sites, but the models on those sites just didn’t have the look I was searching for. I had mentioned to a friend in jest that I was just going to hire my own models, and she said, “I know a guy who could be a model…” The whole thing exploded from there. I got in touch with Angela Brewer of Todd Studios and the whole thing exploded from there.

Our first photo shoot was insane. We shot for 3 days, working 12-14 hour days. We had 17 amazing models to work with though, so that made it all worthwhile.

TRD: Can you tell us about a memorable moment that took place during the photo shoot?

KK: The most memorable moment—hands down—was when the snake handler got bit by a ten foot python. The snake’s jaws had to be pried open to get his hand out. And this happened AFTER the snake had posed with one of our models! Yikes!!!

TRD: What’s going on at HotDamn! right now?

KK: Today is the last day of our 12 day sale. All stock at www.HotDamnStock.com is 50% off!
Plus, we are giving away a camera to one lucky registered user, so get thee over to www.HotDamnStock.com and sign up!

KIMBERLY KILLION, the writer…

TRD: You are also a writer. When do you sleep?

KK: Sleep? What’s that?

TRD: You have three releases due out in 2011. Please tell us about those stories.

KK: Yes…that’s right…3! It’s so exciting to be able to promote 3 stories at the same time.

His Magick Touch is a sensual novella set on the Isle of Barra in the 16th century Scotland. This story releases January 4th in paperback and ebook and will be part of the Mammoth Book of Scottish Romance. Read more about it here: http://kimberlykillion.com/hmtbooks.asp

Educating Aphrodite is a Victorian ménage a quatre novella set in London. This story releases January 5th in ebook from Ellora’s Cave. Read more about it here: http://kimberlykillion.com/eabooks.asp

Taming a Highland Devil is an erotic Scottish novella. The cover alone should hook you on this story. It’s just stunning! This story releases February 9th in ebook from Ellora’s Cave. Read more about it here: http://kimberlykillion.com/tahdbooks.asp

Both of my erotic releases are finalists in one of RWA’s most prestigious contests, The Emily. I can hardly wait for these characters to meet the world!

TRD: What do you think is the key to a memorable romantic story?

KK: Angst! Lots and lots of sexual tension and a touch of creativity. If I can help it, my readers will rarely have to suffer through the boredom of a bedroom love scene. When I write a love scene I like to put my characters in “fun” places, like in a tree, or on a horse, or in a dressing chamber. What can I say, I get bored easily. But I think the most important rule is to always keep your characters thinking about why they shouldn’t be doing what they are doing. There must always be conflict, conflict, conflict!

TRD: Which character have you had the most fun creating? Why?

KK: Magus! Definitely Magnus. The hero in TAMING A HIGHLAND DEVIL is tortured and sexy and wicked. Oh, and let’s not forget he’s the laird, the prime, the alpha if you will…of course!

TRD: Where can readers find you?

KK: I’m online everywhere…

It's Our One Year Anniversary!

Today we begin our week long party in celebration of our 1 year anniversary! Can you believe that it has been a year already? We sure can’t! It has been a year full of surprises, wonders and lots of love. But we will talk about all that another day. Let’s get this party started! And can there possibly be a better way to start the festivities than with a tale of wicked women and sexy men? I sure don’t think so!

A Tale of Four Wicked Women

Narrated by Kimberly Killion
*Let’s call her “Lady Jane” for discretion*

Ahem. Come closer. I’m going to tell you a tale that will make your ears burn… *Lady Jane checks over her shoulder for eavesdroppers, snaps her fan open to cover her mouth, and leans in as far as she can in a corset that is stealing her air.*

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, there lived four wicked women: Lady Buffie, Lady Gannon, Lady Andrea, and the wickedest of all was Lady PJ.

A year past, at a soiree in Georgia, they formed this seedy little place now known as The Romance Dish. You cannot fathom the patrons that frequent this establishment—strumpets and vixens and vamps the lot of them. From time to time, you’ll even find a handsome rake hugging the wall. *Lady Jane pauses momentarily to admire the waiter (for he has a fine bum).*

“Excuse me, sir. Might I trouble you for a spot of your finest bubbly?”

*The waiter pivots on his heel.*

Oh my good Heavens! Is that…? It is!!! “Gerry, darling. So good of you to join us for the party. Come. Sit with me a spell until our honored guests arrive.

*Gerry does as he’s told (because that’s what every hero does in all the best books) and snuggles up next to Jane on the settee.

Now, where was I? Ah, yes, I was about to tell you about the ladies of The Romance Dish. They had a flaw—they loved to “dish”. Gossipmongers if you will. What one might call a blatherskite, a scandal-bearer, a long-nose. And all four ladies had a secret love for the written word and this is what brought them together and precisely what landed them into a scandal. You see, Lady Buffie, Lady Gannon, Lady Andrea, and Lady PJ were all having a secret love affair with the same man.

*Gerry gasps. His powder-blue eyes widen.*

Oh, I know. It was quite the scuttlebutt. Every scandal sheet in London was aflutter talking about it. His name was Alpha, better known as Mr. Male. He was mysterious. A man with a past if you will. Tall, dark and handsome, of course, but he’d been wounded and betrayed by a former love. *Sigh*

“What happened?” Gerry leans closer, his scent of pine and man is damn distracting.

Our ladies healed him. After that, the male patrons began to flock The Romance Dish. Each and every one had a story to tell and Lady Buffie, Lady Gannon, Lady Andrea, and Lady PJ were all eager to listen to their woes. Some had lost loved ones in wars, some had buried their children, and some had lost loves, but they all shared a single trait—they were heroic. When the girls get here, we must ask them who their favorite hero was.

Oh, here they are now. Ladies! Ladies! Over here.

Enters Lady Buffie: Lady Jane! So lovely to see you here. I cannot tell you how excited I am to have you hosting opening day of our one year anniversary party!

Lady Jane: I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. I was just telling a few of the guests who arrived early about the scandal that started it all. You all have serviced so many here. What I want to know is who was your favorite rogue? *Lady Jane gestures for everyone to join Gerry on the settee. It’s a tight fit, but we manage.*

Let’s hear from Lady Andrea first…

Lady Andrea: Oh, my. There have been so many, but if I must choose . . . I will go with Jax Cullen from Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis. Because, you see, Jax is simply irresistible. Just ask his heroine. She totally agrees with me that there is nothing sexier than a hot biker (with tattoos in just the right places) and a heart of solid gold. *fans self* I mean, the man left his life as a successful, high-profile attorney to come back to his home town to do what he loves: work with his hands (mmm-hmmm) and help out his neighbors. Talk about sexy. Plus, he's smart, honorable, protective, and has a wicked sense of humor. Tell me, what's not to love?

Lady Gannon interrupts: Oh, you know I have a weakness for charming rogues *leans toward Gerry and winks*, and I have been fortunate to have crossed paths with many this year. Two who really stand out in my memory are Lord Mac Mackenzie (Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage by Jennifer Ashley) and Roarke (Fantasy In Death by J.D. Robb). Who wouldn't love a handsome Highlander like Mac? He is charming, rakish, sexy, often frustrating, but loving and loyal to a fault. Plus, he's an incredibly talented artist who paints wearing ONLY his kilt. Oh, yes! And then there's Roarke, a man who needs only one name. Richer than Croesus, tall, dark, and gorgeous with a lilting Irish brogue---Roarke is practically perfect in every way. *sigh* As you can see, I have a weakness for heroes with accents. *another wink and a pat on Gerry's knee*

Lady Buffie waves her hands: You ladies know how much I love sexy men (smiles seductively at Gerry and bats her lashes). And though it is hard for me to pick one favorite out of a sea of sexy men, I will have to chose Gabriel St. John, The Marquess of Ralston (Nine Rules To Break When Romancing A Rake by Sarah MacLean). Mercy, the man makes my heart pitter-patter with a single thought. Any man who says a kiss should not leave you satisfied, but instead it should leave you wanting certainly knows his way around a woman AND the bedroom (or rather any room he pleases). My attraction to Gabriel is not based on physical needs only. Oh no! See, Gabriel is the kind of hero who shows his lady the joy of life and that life should be lived to the fullest every single day. Now what woman wouldn’t want days filled with fun and laughter and nights filled with (lightly strokes a finger along Gerry’s jaw) passion?

Lady PJ stands up, snaps her fan open and begins: You are all forgetting about those sexy Highlanders who were my very special guests this year. Of course, I’m talking about Jamie Sinclair (The Devil Wears Plaid by Teresa Medeiros) and Tristan MacGregor (Paula Quinn’s Seduced by a Highlander). Who can resist Jamie, a strapping Highlander who literally rides to the rescue, storming a chapel on his huge black stallion and stealing his heroine from the evil old man she’s being forced to marry? Or Tristan, a charming Highland rogue, determined to overcome all obstacles, including two families and, at times, even the heroine herself, to secure the love of the one woman in the world capable of healing his wounded heart? ::Sigh:: Those certainly were memorable visits.

*Everyone sighs. Jane fears this may turn into Swoonfest 1810.*

Lady Jane: Well, I can see why so many keep coming back here. *A crowd has gathered.* Let’s hear from you all now. Who were your favorite heroes this year? And which heroes are you looking forward to meeting?

See, I told you this tale would be the perfect way to start the celebration. Now, be sure to answer Lady Jane's questions about your favorite heroes and who you are looking forward to meeting. Four random commenters will win prize packages. This giveway is open to everyone!

REVIEW: HIGHLAND DRAGON

Highland Dragon
by Kimberly Killion
Publisher: Zebra
Release Date: October 6, 2009

As a young lad, Calin McLeod witnesses the murder of his father at the command of his enemy’s leader, Laird Kinnon. To add to the horrific memory of watching the life leave his father’s eyes, young Calin also bears witness to the murder of the woman his father loves dearly, Lady Kinnon, immediately after she gives birth to the daughter of the evil Laird Kinnon. Even at the tender age of 10, Calin knows the creed of every Scotsman. No one messes with family!! Determined to avenge his father’s murder, Calin takes the newly birthed baby from the priest’s hands and brands the bottom of the baby girl with his father’s signet ring. Knowing this baby girl is the key to his revenge and that he will come back to claim her as his wife in the years to come, Calin gives the young infant to his best friend’s family to raise and protect.

Akira Neish has always known she would marry her benefactor, the man who has provided for her since she was an infant. But of late she is wondering what is taking the man so darn long to come and claim her. When a group of warriors believing she is a witch all because of a mark on her derriere kidnaps Akira and takes her to Tigh Diabhail to be sold to the highest bidder, Akira believes her savior will never show. But at the last minute, a man arrives with Akira’s brother Kendrick and bids an extremely high amount for her. Unbeknownst to her, this strange man is her benefactor and soon to be husband.

From the first meeting of Calin and Akira, the electricity between these two can be felt through the pages. Though it was not love at first sight, the first interaction between the two does set the atmosphere of frank talk in their relationship. Akira is a strong-willed young woman who thinks quickly on her feet, speaks her mind and at moments demands things her way. When it is revealed that Calin is Akira’s benefactor and has plans to marry her, Akira quickly demands a couple boons from Calin before giving her agreement to the marriage. The majority of her requests are simple and ones Calin quickly approves. But when she informs Calin that if he intends to kiss her frequently prior to their marriage then he will need to shave his beard, Calin doesn’t know what to think.

Calin’s eyes widened. “M’lady, a Highlander without a beard is as rare as a sheep with nay wool. I have nary a doubt, ye are testing me.”

Akira crossed her arms over her chest and raised both brows to challenge him.

“Ye cannae be serious. Ye want me to . . . shave. The bath is acceptable, even desirable at this point, I admit. But the beard? ‘Tis a most unreasonable request. Ye cannae ask this of me.”
Aghast at the demand by Akira, Calin questions himself. Why should the chieftain of Clan McLeod shave his beard? But at this point in the story, I believe that Calin has already given his heart to Akira. Though the words may not have been spoken yet, Calin’s actions speak louder than those words. This seemingly insignificant request proves to be the beginning of the true relationship between Calin and Akira. Though not particularly pleased with his clean shaven face, Calin’s compliance with Akira’s request shows his promise to listen and respect her opinions. As you can see from this passage in the novel, Calin realizes he is falling in love with this woman who is to be the tool of his revenge.

"Calin stood at the entrance to the kirk beside Father Harrald when Akira floated through the procession of people and into his view. His knees locked, and what felt like a small animal jumped inside his gut. When a constricting force clutched at his heart, he gave his head a quick shake. What was wrong with him? He was a leader. A warrior. He refused to believe the woman he was about to marry for the sake of protecting his clan shared part of his heart, but the undeniable weight pushing against his lungs challenged his theory. As the timeless moment whirled around him like Highland mist, he realized Akira would be more than just his lady wife. She would be his companion. His friend. His lover."
Kimberly Killion has done it again with this novel. I have to say this story kept me riveted the entire time. The relationship between Calin and Akira is one you would (or at least should) expect from any Highland medieval story – strong, passionate, opinionated, and sensual with utter devotion and conquering love as the threads that bind hearts and souls together.

The cast of secondary characters is second to none. From the despicable, creepy (really creepy!) Laird Kinnon to the adorable, young Andrew who grabs at your heartstrings to the older, feisty Aunt Wanda who gives the elders of the clan a tongue lashing to best friend Kendrick who is begging for his own story to be told (or at least I’m begging for his story!). All of these unique individuals add just the right amount of flavor to this story.

This is a book that now has its place on my keeper shelf. So leave some space on your keeper shelf and go pick up Highland Dragon. You won’t be disappointed!

Disclaimer: Even though I have a personal and business relationship with Kimberly Killion, I have reviewed this book with the same sense of fairness and objectivity that I bring to every review.

GUEST AUTHOR - Kimberly Killion

We are so thrilled to have award-winning author, Kimberly Killion, with us today as our very first guest author and to celebrate Day 2 of the grand opening of THE ROMANCE DISH. Kimberly writes powerful, sexy medievals. Who doesn't love to read about a sexy Scotsman! I fell in love with her writing last year when I read (and raved about!) her debut novel, HER ONE DESIRE.
Let's all welcome Kimberly!
*cheers & applause*
KIMBERLY: My, my, my, you all certainly outdid yourselves on the decorations... Bravo! Bravo! I was here yesterday for the launch and have to say, you all had a packed house. Is anyone suffering a bit from the bubbly?
*lots of nodding*
Well, I’ve got just the thing for what ails you…more bubbly!!!
*hurrahs and applause*
Now where is that handsome Irish butler I saw yesterday? *Kimberly searches the crowd for Sean.* Oh, I worried the bloke might have worked over hard yesterday. Hmmm…he doesn’t seem to be with us at the moment, but fear not ladies, I never travel without my own attendant.
“Oh Mr. Butler! Mr. Butler, do come say hello to the girls.”
Ah, there he is. Ladies, I give you Gerard.
*silence, gasps, swoon*
“Do not tally, Gerard. And keep those glasses full.”
Now…where was I…Ah, yes…I was about to tell you a little about myself. As Buffie said before, I write sexy Medieval Romance, but you all really don’t want to hear about me. The truth is, you really don’t care how long I’ve been writing (since ’97) or what I would tell aspiring authors (persevere). Let’s be honest, do you really care what my favorite food is (chocolate) or what my greatest fears are (spiders and balloons)?
I know the last thing you all want to hear about is who my favorite authors are (Teresa Medeiros and Julie Garwood) or what I’m working on now (a three-book series that is currently top secret, but let’s just say I’m trying out a regency voice).
What you all really came for today are the hawt Scots!
“Oh, Gerard! Gerard!” Where did he go?
GANNON: He's over here.
KIMBERLY: *gasp* “Gerard! I did not bring you along so you could woo all the guests! Now start filling those glasses!”
Ahem…where was I?… Ah, yes…hawt Scots. Well, let me tell you a bit about—
*Holds up finger* “Gerard, see if you can make yourself useful in the kitchen.”
The man gets so jealous when I talk about my Calin. Laird Calin MacLeod that is. He is the hero in my October release, HIGHLAND DRAGON. Let me tell you a bit about him. Eighteen years after hiding the secret of his betrothed’s lineage, Laird Calin MacLeod is forced to choose between avenging his father’s death and surrendering to the passion he finds in the arms of his enemy’s daughter.
This man saw more bloodshed before he was ten years old than the average young laddie. (read about that treacherous moment) And let me tell you a wee bit about his woman...
Akira Neish has been raised as a peasant, her belly often empty and her family subject to the cruel whims of her clan's laird. To the clan’s children, the horned shaped birthmark she bears means she is a witch. But she is neither peasant nor witch—and now the man who knows the truth has returned to claim her for his own.
Yes, you guessed it. That man is my Calin. How do you suppose that first meeting will go?
Actually, here’s a brief snippet of Calin and Akira’s first encounter...
***************************
Calin crawled atop Akira on all fours, covering her from head to toe. Mocking their privacy, the guards lowered a gauze canopy—caging them like breeding animals on public display. She violently thrashed her head side to side, whipping a black web of hair to veil her features.
“Imigh sa diabhal, bastún,” Akira cursed at him in Gaelic. And then in French. “Focal leat! Retournez à la pute qui t’a accouchée!”
“I am nay a bastard, and my mother wasnae a whore.” Calin calmly corrected her expletives. Her obscene vocabulary both shocked and impressed him.
“To the devil with your black blood. May ye rot alongside the bitseach that birthed ye.”
“Nor was my mother a bitch.” Although Calin knew little about the woman who died giving birth to him, he felt a sense of honor to protect his mother from such heinous names. He exhaled dramatically, shook his head, and tsked. “How can such a vulgar tongue be placed betwixt the lips of such a bonnie fine mouth?”
In response, Akira spat on him. She then thrust forward, ramming her forehead into the bridge of his nose. The impact against his skull reverberated clear to his back teeth.
Hell and damnation, his bride was a hoyden!
*****************
ANDREA: Whoa! What happens next?

PJ: Please, please tell us what happens next!

KIMBERLY: You’ll have to pick up the book to see...
AMAZON BORDERS B&N or get the eBOOK
Now, then...let’s talk about your favorite Scots. Maybe he’s an actor or perhaps he’s a character in a book. And for those of you who comment, I’ll toss your name in Gerard’s pocket, and later today, we’ll draw a winner for an autographed copy of HIGHLAND DRAGON as well as an autographed copy of my RITA nominated debut book, HER ONE DESIRE.
Oh, and before I wrap up, I wanted to thank Buffie for having me on THE ROMANCE DISH today. *searches the crowd* Where did Buffie go?

BUFFIE:
I’m here! Over here. Gerard and I were just catching up. *sigh*
Thank you so much for joining us today, Kimberly. But most especially thanks for bringing Mr. Butler with you!!

Be sure to stop by this Saturday, November 7, to check out my review of HIGHLAND DRAGON.
