Review - - The Case of the Missing Botticelli

The Case of the Missing Botticelli
by Marilyn Baron
A Massimo Domingo Mystery - Book 1
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press, Inc.
Release Date: January 24, 2022
Reviewed by PJ

In this cozy mystery, American art history major Hadley Evans joins an art detective agency in Florence, Italy, working for Massimo Domingo, once a major player, now the Inspector Clouseau of the art world.

Determined to save the flailing agency and prove her worth, Hadley and her sexy carabiniere boyfriend, Luca Ferrari, take on a mysterious client behind her boss's back. While hot on the trail of a missing masterpiece, they discover a hidden cache of stolen Nazi art in a Venetian villa and encounter a dangerous enemy with a link to an evil past.

PJ's Thoughts:

It's been almost five years since my last visit to Italy, the country of my soul. Once I discovered that Marilyn Baron had set her new book there, it went straight to my must-read list. Situated primarily in Florence and Venice, with side trips to Lake Como and Milan, reading this story was like visiting my favorite places from my sofa. It's clear that Baron is both knowledgeable about and holds deep affection for Italy. The scenic, architectural, and cultural richness of the country shines through on every page.

Something else that shines through is this author's appreciation for art, around which the mysteries in the book are centered, in particular, art with ties to WWII, Germany, and the Holocaust. I was fascinated by the blending of fiction with the obviously well-researched facts surrounding treasured paintings by European masters that were confiscated (stolen) from Jewish families in the 1930s and 1940s, some of which have been recovered and others that are missing still, as well as the ongoing struggle of surviving family members to reclaim their rightful property. I want to know more.

There is a romantic thread that weaves through the story as well, featuring Hadley, the (American) main protagonist and Luca, an Italian carabiniere (police officer). It's entertaining and does continue to evolve throughout the story with Luca assisting Hadley in her art detective role. This is the first book of a new series so, if Hadley continues to have a leading role in future books, I'm hopeful we'll see her romantic relationship progress as well. There are already plenty of opportunities for both conflict and humor in cultural expectations as well as those of Hadley's and Luca's American and Italian families. Italian mamas and Southern Belles (Hadley's mother) do tend to have opinions and aren't hesitant to voice them.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries, "traveling" from the comfort of home, engaging characters and fascinating historical facts, all centered within the high-stakes world of stolen art, give this book a try. I enjoyed it and will be looking forward to the next Massimo Domingo mystery.

Release Blitz - - The Siege: A Novel by Marilyn Baron

The Siege: A Novel
By Marilyn Baron
Genre: Contemporary, Women's Fiction, Romantic Suspense, Mystery, Historical
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
Released: January 8, 2018

A journey of self-discovery leads to love and passion in the search for a family's hidden past...

Artist Theia Constas receives a tour of Italy from her grandmother as a college graduation present. Before she departs, her ya-ya's deathbed revelation of a cache of WWII photographs and love letters extends Theia's itinerary to Crete in search of her unknown grandfather, a promising artist who studied under Chagall but didn't survive the war.

Wade Bingham, an actuary who always follows the rules and calculates the odds, finds himself alone on his honeymoon trip, wondering why his fiancee jilted him at the last minute.

In the wrong place at the wrong time when their hotel in Florence, Italy is besieged by terrorists, the two strangers find themselves thrust together in Wade's honeymoon suite. Immediately attracted to each other, Wade conducts a siege of his own to win Theia's heart.

Excerpt
The Siege
“Go back to your room,” the American tour director ordered, shouting at the woman.

“I can’t get the door to open,” Theia protested, thrusting her key card at him in frustration.

The tour director hurriedly took the proffered card in sweaty hands and tried the lock, which didn’t click.  He jammed the key card into the slot again, to no avail.

A man opened the door and stuck his head out of the room. “What’s wrong? Is this some kind of a fire drill?”

“It’s no drill. Get back in your room and shelter in place until I give the all-clear. Don’t open the door to anyone.”

The tour director returned Theia’s card. “Get back in your room with your husband.”

“This is my room, but he’s not my husband,” Theia insisted.

“There must be some kind of mistake,” the man in the room announced. “This is my room.”

The tour director grabbed the woman’s key card again and examined the key holder. He shook his head, rolled his eyes, and looked at Theia like she was a recalcitrant child. “You’re on the wrong floor, miss. This is Room 515. You’re in Room 415.”

“I’m sorry.” Theia blew out a breath and turned to leave. The tour director blocked her way.

“Excuse me, but I need to get back to my room.”  Tears of exhaustion pooled in her eyes. She wanted to scream.

“I’m afraid you can’t go anywhere. We’ve disabled the elevators for your safety, and hotel security is blocking the stairs, for now.” He ushered her into Room 515 and pushed her into the arms of the man standing at the door.

Today's Special - - Marilyn Baron

We had server problems Thursday when this was originally posted and several people were not able to access the site. Because of that we are re-posting Marilyn's blog post today. The comments from both posts will be combined to randomly choose the winner of Marilyn's giveaway.

It's always a pleasure to host award-winning novelist Marilyn Baron here at The Romance Dish.  I've had the pleasure of getting to know Marilyn at conferences over the years.  She's a lovely lady who just happens to write wonderful books!  A native of Miami, Florida and a graduate of the University of Florida, Marilyn currently lives in the Atlanta, Georgia area.  You can find more information about Marilyn and her books at her website and connect online at the following locations.

Write “Where” You Know
By Marilyn Baron

We’ve all heard the expression, “Write what you know.” But how many authors write “where” they know? If you’re writing fantasy or historical you’re most likely using your imagination because your “real” world doesn’t exist or it existed centuries earlier. Chances are the same is true if you’re writing paranormal.  I went back and reviewed my books to see where I stood on the “Write Where You Know-O-Meter.”

Turns out that in every one of my eight books, my setting was a place I’d either lived or had visited. That wasn’t intentional. It just worked out that way. Am I the type who likes to stick close to home? Not really. I love to travel and I tend to set my novels in places where I’ve been.

The only exception was my WW II historical, Under the Moon Gate, where the story was set in contemporary and WW II Bermuda. I have been to Bermuda 10 times but never to 1940s Bermuda, so I had to do research for that part of the novel. However, it still counts, since I am pretty familiar with the setting. The prequel, Destiny: A Bermuda Love Story, was set at the time of Bermuda’s discovery in the 17th century, so I had to do research on that book, but it was still a location I had been to, even if at a much later date.

The Edger, the humorous women’s fiction I wrote with my artist sister, was set in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, her hometown. Murder at the Outlet Mall, a shopping suspense tale, was set in St. Augustine, Florida, a place I’m very familiar with. Memory Lane, the musical about Alzheimer’s I co-wrote with my sister, is set in South Beach and since I’m from Miami, I’m also familiar with that location.

Significant Others, a humorous women’s fiction set in a retirement community in Boca Raton Florida, was really patterned after a retirement community where my mother lives in Pembroke Pines, Florida, so, other than interview some of her contemporaries about finding love a second time around, I didn’t have to do much research.

Sixth Sense, Book One in my Psychic Crystal Mystery series, takes place in Atlanta, Sydney, Australia, and a fictional seaside community called Casa Spirito. However, it was patterned after a real psychic community in Florida, which I’ve visited. I live in Atlanta, and I got the idea for this book when I sat next to a psychic on the long plane ride to Sydney.

Book Two in the series, Homecoming Homicides, my latest book, a dark romantic suspense with a humorous twist,  is set in a small college town in North Florida I called Graysville, but it was patterned after the city where I went to college—Gainesville, Florida.

Book Three in the series, Murder on the Repositioning Cruise, will take place on a cruise ship on a transatlantic voyage. I’ve been on many cruises. In fact, last year when my husband and I took a Mediterranean cruise, I took a behind-the-scenes tour of the ship specifically to do research for the book.

The book I just sold to The Wild Rose Press, Stones, perhaps most exemplifies the “Write Where You Know,” axiom.  It starts out in Atlanta and goes to Palm Coast, Florida, where I own a beach condo; alternates to Miami and Coral Gables; and flashes back to Florence, Italy, where I studied for six months in my junior year of college.

Another book I’m working on, a humorous women’s fiction, also starts on a cruise ship and is set in a small island community in Florida, much like Palm Coast.

One anthology to which I contributed a short story, was called Aspen Exposé. At the time I wrote the story, I had never been to Aspen, but because I had a story in that anthology, and I had researched Aspen, I decided to visit and really enjoyed it.

I’ve also written four short stories (about angels and demons) for TWB Press, and although I did have to use my imagination when crafting the paranormal elements of the story, they were all set in places I’d either lived or visited: the Atlanta area; Palm Coast, Florida, and New York City; Las Vegas and Roswell, Georgia.

So I guess I’m a hometown girl at heart. I’m going to have to think about where I set my next book. Maybe I should break tradition and set it somewhere I’ve never been.

What about you? If you’re a writer, do you set your books in familiar locations? If you’re a reader, do you like to read about places you’ve been or travel to new worlds?

Marilyn is giving away one PDF copy of her new book, Homecoming Homicides, to a randomly chosen person who leaves a comment on today’s post.

Today's Special - - Marilyn Baron

I'm delighted to welcome Marilyn Baron to the Romance Dish today. Marilyn's star has been shining for many years.  A native of Miami, Florida and graduate of the University of Florida, Marilyn wrote her first book while still in grade school and wrote and directed her first play at the age of 13.  Today, she lives in the Atlanta, Georgia area with her husband and children and stays busy writing award-winning humorous women's fiction, romantic suspense thrillers and paranormal romance.

Marilyn joins us today to celebrate the print release of her newest book, Under the Moon Gate.  Please give her a warm welcome.

Thank you PJ and Andrea for hosting me today on The Romance Dish.

I’m excited because today is the official release date of my new novel, Under the Moon Gate. Although the book has been out on Amazon Kindle in digital format, it is now officially available in print on Amazon, on my publisher’s (The Wild Rose Press) Web site and other outlets. The prequel, Destiny: A Bermuda Love Story, is currently out in a digital-only format on Amazon with an official release date of September 11.

My family has vacationed in Bermuda many times and it’s one of my favorite places to visit, which is why I decided to set my books there. My new Web site also features a Bermuda theme and the beautiful island colors so I hope you’ll visit my site. I’m a big WW II buff so I combined both loves in writing these stories. Spy novels are a particular favorite and my husband won’t read anything but spy novels set in WW II so if I wanted him to read my book, I knew I would have to write a WW II spy novel.

I think the artist did a great job with the cover of Under the Moon Gate. It’s my favorite color green and incorporates the beautiful moon gates of Bermuda, which feature prominently in my story. Moon Gates, a very special tradition of Bermuda, are arches made of Bermuda stone, often used as an entrance to a garden. Legend has it that people who step through a Moon Gate, especially young lovers and honeymooners, are blessed with good luck.

These stories have been percolating for about ten years so I’m thrilled that they are finally coming to light. They were originally part of one larger manuscript called The Bermuda Triangle: A Love Story and included three love stories from three generations. The first takes place in the early 17th century. Then there’s a contemporary romance and a World War II romance. All three romances are still contained in the two books that have just been released. I did a lot of library and Internet research on Bermuda during the WW II and earlier time periods. There’s plenty of suspense, intrigue and romance, and of course, humor, a trademark of all of my books.

Following are blurbs about my latest releases.

Now out in e-book from The Wild Rose Press, DESTINY: A BERMUDA LOVE STORY, is the prequel to UNDER THE MOON GATE

The relationship of star-crossed lovers Elizabeth Sutton and Edward Morgan founders off the coast of Bermuda with the shipwreck of the Sea Venture in the seventeenth century.  Edward is seduced by the captain’s daughter and trapped into an unhappy marriage, but he and his new wife continue the voyage to Virginia to rescue the starving Jamestown Colony.

Elizabeth, still in England and pregnant with Edward’s child, receives Edward’s letters telling of the shipwreck but knows nothing of his marriage.  When her child is old enough, Elizabeth follows Edward as far as Bermuda.  Will he return and will the lovers be reunited, or will their eternally entwined souls search forever to fulfill their destiny?

BUY DESTINY: A BERMUDA LOVE STORY
AMAZON
Elizabeth and Edward are the ancestors of the hero and heroine of Under the Moon Gate, so readers will get their happy ending in the sequel.

Now out in e-book and print from The Wild Rose Press, Under the Moon Gate, is a historical romantic thriller set in contemporary and WW II Bermuda.

Dashing sea captain Nathaniel Morgan sails into the life of prim and proper Bermuda heiress Patience Whitestone and threatens to expose her family secrets—ruinous secrets she wasn’t aware of. The two are immediately at odds when Nathaniel moors his vessel in front of her estate and refuses to leave until he finds the cache of Swiss gold he’s convinced was buried somewhere on the property during World War II. Can Patience save herself and her family’s reputation when she finds herself reluctantly drawn to this determined “pirate”? Or will someone from the past make good on his threat to destroy them both? Their fate is inextricably linked to Nazi plots and to the beautiful moon gates of Bermuda in this compelling tale of love and intrigue. Under the Moon Gate also features a love story between the grandparents of Patience, which takes place during World War II.

Here’s one of the 5-star reviews for Under the Moon Gate. You can check out the others on Amazon.

Tropical Mystery/Suspense/Romance
“I really enjoyed all the spiciness of the German/British intrigue. Fairy tale kind of love, in a tropical Paradise, is a plus for any romance novel. Sexy Pirate bad boy meets Stunningly Beautiful, locked away virgin, good girl. Generations of suspense on both sides of the family tree...”

Marilyn, what are you working on now?

I’ve just finished approving the final edits for Sixth Sense, a romantic suspense, the first book in my psychic mystery series, which will be published by The Wild Rose Press. I have a cover but no release date yet. Sixth Sense won the Georgia Romance Writers 2012 Unpublished Maggie Award of Excellence in the Paranormal/Fantasy Romance category. The second book in the series is called Homecoming Homicides. The third, Murder on the Repositioning Cruise, hasn’t been written yet. I just got back from a Mediterranean cruise, where the action in the third book will take place, so I enjoyed the research phase of that project.  My editor and I have just finished preliminary edits on Significant Others, a humorous women’s fiction that is scheduled to be released this Christmas by The Wild Rose Press.

My sister and I, who co-wrote The Edger and Murder at the Outlet Mall, just completed a musical called Memory Lane that we’re trying to get produced.

Have you ever been to Bermuda?  Have you ever set a novel in a place you loved to visit?  Do you like to read novels about places you've visited?

One commenter will get a copy (their choice of print or eBook) of Under the Moon Gate or Destiny: A Bermuda Love Story (eBook only) and a beautiful bookmark, designed by Kim Killion, featuring both books.

All in the Family
By Marilyn Baron

Thanksgiving is this week and that holiday brings to mind family. Family can mean relatives or good friends, like the two sets of friends who took my daughter in for a week when she was displaced by Hurricane Sandy in New York City.

Today, I’d like to focus on my sister Sharon Goldman, who collaborated with me recently on two projects. At the beginning of the year, we released a humorous women’s fiction, an e-Book called “The Edger” http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006Y3P12Y. The novel is about landscape artist Alexandra Newborn’s shocking reunion with her college art professor, Nick Anselmo—once a celebrated Italian artist, now a homeless lawn man—which sows the seeds for murder, mystery and romance. As an award-winning artist in Florida http://sgoldmanart.com/index.htm, Sharon’s involvement in the project made the story more realistic. She also painted the cover art and some inside color and black and white art, which makes the book unique. The Edger received a 4-1/2-star rating and a wonderful review in RT Book Reviews’ September issue in the mainstream fiction section. Our plans are to rerelease the book in print form.

We just completed a musical called “Memory Lane,” about Alzheimer’s, which we hope to get produced. Collaborating involves a whole set of issues, including the fact that we live in neighboring states, but, so far, we’ve survived both projects and are excited about our prospects. Our working relationship has brought us even closer together.

In addition, I have four humorous supernatural short stories published by TWB Press–my angel trilogy–A Choir of Angels, Follow an Angel and The Stand-In Bridegroom—and a story with a more devilish bent—Dead Mixhttp://www.twbpress.com/authormarilynbaron.html.

My romantic thriller, Under the Moon Gate, set in contemporary and World War Two Bermuda, will be released by The Wild Rose Press in 2013, as a historical. I am currently trying to find a home for my paranormal, Sixth Sense, which just won a Maggie Award of Excellence from Georgia Romance Writers. After that, I’ll finalize a prequel for Under the Moon Gate.

What do all of these projects have in common? They are all humorous. I love to laugh and I think my readers do, too. What don’t they have in common? Genre. They range from women’s fiction and romantic thrillers (historical) to paranormal romance. I used to think that sticking to one genre was the way to go. But not anymore.

So, no matter what genre you write, whether you work with a writing partner or go it alone, self-publish or go the traditional route, I hope everyone has a safe, happy Thanksgiving holiday and a healthy and productive 2013. One commenter will receive a free PDF copy of The Edger.

Readers, what genre do you enjoy reading?  Do you read multiple genres or stick to one?  Do you enjoy humor in the books you read?  If you're a writer, have you tried your hand at multiple genres?
