Beach Bag Bonanza Reviews & Giveaway

PJ here!  As I write this, my skin is gently caressed by sweet ocean breezes, my ears are serenaded by the music of waves lapping at the shore and my toes wiggle happily in warm sand. I'm in my happy place and all I need to complete the picture is a beach bag filled with good books.  Luckily for me, that's exactly what I have!  As I prepare to immerse myself in the first of many good stories I plan to read this week, let me share with all of you some recently read books that I recommend for your summer reading list.

ALL I WANT IS YOU
A Coral Cove Novel
By Toni Blake
Publisher:  Avon
Release Date: May 27, 2014

After losing her parents in a devastating house fire, Christy Knight is starting over with nothing - no insurance money, no childhood memories, barely enough income to make it from paycheck to paycheck and her dream of supporting herself with her jewelry designs seemingly out of reach.  But she's hanging on until she learns her beloved grandfather is about to be kicked out of his nursing home in Coral Cove, Florida for lack of money to pay their high fees.  He's her only remaining relative and she's not about to let him go down without a fight. Her roomie suggests Christy find herself a rich husband to solve all her problems. Unfortunately for Christy, none of her rich dates measure up to Jack DuVall, her sexy handyman neighbor, a man with the potential to fulfill all her needs except one: money.  Jack's had his heart broken by a woman in search of a rich husband before and isn't about to go down that road again.  He initially pegs Christy as a gold digger and even though he changes his mind as he gradually gets to know her he still protects his heart by letting her think he's a low-income handyman.  A road trip from Ohio to Coral Cove to visit Christy's grandfather changes everything and teaches both Christy and Jack what's really important in life.  But just as they begin to trust in each other and what they have between them, Jack's secret comes to light and that betrayal of trust threatens to tear them apart.  Forever.

This first book in Toni Blake's new Coral Cove series is a winner.  She's created a lovely, laid-back beach town in Coral Cove that I want to visit and has populated it with quirky, heartwarming characters that I want to meet.  Christy's Grandpa Charlie would be first on the list!  Full of wit and wisdom, Charlie is in his twilight years but very important to this story.  Blake gives Charlie his own story-within-a-story by reflecting on a time in his life when he chose to do the "responsible thing" over following his heart, a choice he has regretted his entire life and it's this life experience that enables him to help Christy with her own love vs responsibility struggles.  We also meet other characters who fill in the Coral Cove landscape and I hope will make more appearances in future books.  When you pick up this Toni Blake book you can expect realistic and fully developed characters, a richly told emotional journey and laughs, sighs and cheers along the way. Add this one to your summer beach bag.  You won't be sorry.

WHAT A WOMAN NEEDS
By Judi Fennell
A Manley Maids Novel
Publisher: Berkley
Release Date:  June 3, 2014

Movie star Bryan Manley is used to swarming paparazzi and swooning fans. Surprisingly, he's also used to dusting, sweeping and cleaning toilets.  The grandmother who raised him and his siblings saw to that so when he loses a bet with his sister that has him spending six weeks in his hometown as a Manley Maid for her cleaning service, he isn't worried about being able to do the job.  Then he meets the client, widow Beth Hamilton and her five children.  Suddenly, four weeks in the Hamilton household takes on a whole new meaning.

After the traumatizing media circus surrounding her late husband's headline-making death, the last thing over-worked and over-stressed Beth Hamilton and her children need is any kind of connection to handsome, sexy, media darling Bryan Manley.  But then the man arrives at her house in that ridiculous Manley Maids uniform and he's so gorgeous, so sexy, so nice.  And he cleans!  Four weeks with the actor who stars in the dreams of women world-wide.  What could go wrong?

I loved this book!  It's sweet, sexy, flirtatious and heartwarming.  My recipe for a no-fail summer read? Take one worn-out mom, one surly teen son, one teen daughter in the throes of puppy love, twin sons who rival an F5 tornado and an adorable little girl sure to win everyone's heart.  Toss in a sexy, charming, too-good-to-be-true movie star with the ability to send a woman's libido into orbit while corralling her children, cleaning her house and winning all of their hearts in the process. Relax.  Read.  Enjoy!

STORMY PERSUASION
A Malory Novel
By Johanna Lindsey
Publisher: Gallery Books
Release Date: June 10, 2014

Johanna Lindsey's Malory family captured my heart in our first meeting which happened to be in the first book of the series.  There have been highs and lows over the course of eleven books and I admit to being a bit disappointed with the last few books but I'm happy to say that Stormy Persuasion has our love affair back on the right course.

While cousins Jacqueline "Jack" and Judith Malory, daughters of James and Tony, may have different life goals - marriage and motherhood for Judith while Jack yearns to sail the seas like her former pirate father - they've been best friends since the cradle.  So, of course, when the girls turn eighteen and Jack has to travel to America for her debut to satisfy a promise her father made to her mother's American brothers she isn't about to go without Judith beside her.  Setting sail in the company of their fathers, Jack's mother, an aunt and uncle and a newly discovered cousin, the girls look forward to fun and adventure before returning to England where Judith's mother is busy narrowing the field of Scottish marital prospects for her daughter. Neither girl has any idea that the trip will be life-changing in ways they could not possibly have foreseen.

Masquerading as a deck hand on the ship, Nathan Tremayne is actually a ship captain and smuggler carrying out a secret mission for the British government in exchange for a full pardon and the chance to reclaim his stolen ship. The last thing he needs is a pampered society miss mucking up the works but he can't seem to resist the lovely Judith and it appears the feeling is mutual.  Just when he begins to entertain ideas of a future with her though, an event aboard ship changes everything and leaves Nathan disappearing into the night and Judith heartbroken.  But fate isn't quite finished with this pair.  When Jack's life is put at risk, only Nathan has the means to rescue her but will he be able to put his pride aside and offer assistance?  And, more importantly, will Judith and her family be able to accept his assistance with the strings that are attached?

Stormy Persuasion is a fast-paced, high seas romance of the very best kind.  Fans of the Malory series will delight in seeing the girls all grown up and watching their former rakehell fathers deal with all the ramifications of having respectable - and not so respectable - gentlemen sniffing around their skirts.  Loved it!  For readers who have not read the series, not to worry.  This book stands well on it's own.  Though, after reading it, you will most likely start searching out the rest of the books in the series, especially Tony and James' stories (Tender Rebel #2 and Gentle Rogue #3).  My favorite couple, Amy (Malory) and Warren Anderson also make an appearance in this story.  Their book is The Magic of You, #4 in the series.

I do hope Lindsey is planning a book for Jack.  I can't wait to see what she does with her.  Whatever it is, it's sure to be fun.  She truly is her father's daughter!  :)

FAIR PLAY
By Deeanne Gist
Publisher: Howard Books
Release Date: May 6, 2014

In 1893, the world descends upon the city by the lake for the World's Columbian Exhibition, otherwise known as the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. One of those working at the fair is Dr. Billy Jack Tate, a woman ahead of her time.  She loves the city, is dedicated to her profession and is working toward her goal of establishing her own successful medical practice.  Hunter Scott, a Texas Ranger, traditionalist and country boy through and through is one of the elite Columbian Guards hired for the duration of the fair.  He thrives on wide open spaces and can't wait to get back to Texas.  He also believes a woman should be a homemaker, not a wage earner. You know from the minute of their unconventional first meeting that these two are going to be fun!

When Hunter finds an abandoned baby and takes him to Billy Jack, the baby eventually leads them to the slums of Chicago's Nineteenth Ward and the mass of downtrodden children living there.  Determined to do something to brighten the lives of those children, they team up to build a playground, a decision that eventually spawns a playground movement that spreads across the country.  In the process of working together to help the children, Billy Jack and Hunter grow closer and eventually fall in love but in order to have a happy ending will one of them have to sacrifice their dream?

I grew up close to Chicago and was fascinated by family stories of ancestors who lived there.  In fact, my multi-great grandfather emigrated from Canada to Chicago to take a job building the "White City" that was the 1893 World's Fair so this story had special meaning for me.  As I read Gist's book, it was as if I was actually there, experiencing all that Billy Jack, Hunter and my ancestors had as they walked the grounds of the fair and ventured into the garbage-strewn, poverty-stricken areas of the city.  Gist's descriptions are spot-on and her characters realistic and true to the times, bringing 1893 Chicago vividly to life.  She does an excellent job of weaving real characters into the fabric of her story as well, to the point that it's difficult to differentiate between real and fictional.  They all seemed real to me.  The romance between Billy Jack and Hunter is sweet and emotional but not explicit. Again, Gist does a good job of keeping the heat factor (mild) true to the characters without sacrificing any of the emotion or sexual tension.  Readers may notice that this book is published by an inspirational imprint but I would not classify it as such. In fact, I believe it signals Gist's move from inspirational romance to more mainstream stories.

If you enjoy rich, historical Americana with a heartwarming romance then I suggest you tuck this book into your beach bag this summer.  In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I may just tuck it into mine and go back for a second visit!

Today's Special - - Rowan Keats

Taming a Wild Scot has been nominated for a RT Reviewer's Choice Award for Best First Historical Romance. Congratulations, Rowan!

PJ here.  I'm a self-proclaimed, banner-waving, unabashedly enthusiastic fan of medieval historical romance.  Set that romance in Scotland and my enthusiasm overflows.  It should come as no surprise then that I am always excited to welcome new medieval authors to the romance fiction landscape.  Today, I'm happy to introduce you to Rowan Keats and her debut novel, TAMING A WILD SCOT.

Rowan pens historical adventures about hot Highland heroes and the women they claim. The first book in her Claimed by the Highlander series, TAMING A WILD SCOT, hits store shelves on November 5, 2013. Rowan's debut garnered a 4 1/2 star review from RT Book Reviews, which also named her "a rising star of medieval romance". (I wholeheartedly agree with RT!)
When not writing, Rowan can frequently be found in a dark movie theater indulging in a large bag of popcorn, or watching the sunrise with a mug of steaming coffee wrapped in her hands. She lives in Central Canada with a goofy black lab, a very talkative cat, and a daughter whose own creative talents awe and inspire her every day.

Happy Anniversary to The Romance Dish!

November is cause for celebration with me, too. This month I am releasing my first Scottish medieval romance, TAMING A WILD SCOT. Coincidently, it's also the date of the opening scene in my book...which starts with my heroine Ana in a rather tight spot. If you're curious, the first chapter is posted here.

I love the title of this book. It's sexy and adventurous, which I think is true of the story inside the cover. It has also given me the perfect topic for my celebratory blog tour--How to Tame a Wild Scot.

Wild Scots are an endangered breed, rather like the Highland Wildcat. Fierce, proud, and tough to tame. But I'm willing to share a few secrets I learned while writing this book, because I happen to believe Wild Scots make the best romance heroes and everyone deserves one.
Let's assume that you've scouted the territory and spotted a Wild Scot. You've fallen for that soul-stirring accent and manly display of knees beneath a kilt. What do you do next? Well, you've got to get his attention.
This is a tricky step. Wild Scots are born hunters, so they enjoy the chase. Stalking a Wild Scot is the fastest way to lose his interest. And it will probably get you arrested. No, the best way to attract the attention of a Wild Scot is to wave a red flag.

This is how my heroine Ana does it:

Niall’s gaze slid across the village square to the woman perusing the offerings of the vegetable vendor. Like other female marketgoers, she wore an uninspiring brown gown topped by a white apron and a linen brèid. That display of matronly modesty and the loose fit of her coarse woolen clothing did surprisingly little to shield her from the attentions of a pack of eager young lads—they passed her by with many a second glance and a few bold grins. Perhaps they were as intrigued as he was by the lock of dark red hair that had escaped her head covering.

You don't have red hair? That's okay. There are other ways to wave the red flag. My hero Niall finds twin red flags particularly difficult to ignore:

“Here’s your satchel, sweetling. I’ll leave you alone to do your good work.”

She tossed him an arch look. “You don’t intend to wait for me?”

He shook his head. “You could be a considerable time and I must see the carpenters about an urgent matter. We’ve a pressing need for a larger, sturdier bed.”

The handmaiden withdrew with a faint smile and the whisper of her linen hem over the rushes. Ana blushed madly. “I think the priority must be finding work, husband. Perhaps you should see the reeve instead.”

“Perhaps I’ll do both,” he said agreeably, enjoying her reaction.

Still a delightful shade of pink, Ana closed the chamber door in his face.

Once you get the attention of your Wild Scot, the real challenge begins. But taming a Wild Scot is worth the effort.  They are renowned for their brawny good looks, their unbridled passion, and their determined  protection of the ones they care about.

The peat was just beginning to catch flame when a thump came from the woodpile at the rear of the hut. Niall surged to his feet. Had the Norman sergeant returned to cause Ana more grief? If so, the cur would regret his decision. He slipped quietly out the door and rounded the corner in a flash, his dirk at the ready.

Guest Review - - Christmas on Main Street

Christmas on Main Street
By JoAnn Ross, Susan Donovan,
LuAnn McLane, Alexis Morgan
Publisher: Signet
Release Date: November 5, 2013

Christmas on Main Street is a holiday anthology, and, as the title suggests, the Christmas season in small-town America is the theme that links the four novellas included in the collection. Like the song “Home for the Holidays,” the stories range “from Atlantic to Pacific” with a stop inland, and each offers the cozy comfort of a small-town community, a love story with the requisite HEA, and Christmas settings to cheer the hearts of readers.

“Christmas in Shelter Bay” by JoAnn Ross

The wedding of Cole Douchett and Kelli Carpenter takes place in The Homecoming, the first book in Ross’s Shelter Bay series and the story of Cole’s brother Sax and Kara Conway. This novella is a prequel that gives fans of the series back story for characters for whom they have developed affection, and it can also serve as an introduction to the series for readers who have never visited Shelter Bay.

Cole, the eldest of the Douchett brothers and the sensible, responsible one, is on leave from the Marines and uncertain about the direction of his future. But he is certain about his desire to repair his friendship with Kelli Carpenter, the younger sister of his best friend. Cole is not sure what caused Kelli to explode last Christmas, but he’s confident he can regain his place in her good graces. Maybe he can also convince her that the dull school principal that she’s spending time with is not the man for her. Meanwhile, his father and grandfather have persuaded him that time alone at the family cabin is what he needs to get his head straight.

Kelli has been in love with Cole ever since she was old enough to notice boys. She has always believed that one day he would wake up and see that they are meant for one another. But when he showed her the ring he had bought for another woman last year, he shook her faith in their future. Now she is determined to get over her feelings for him. Maybe some time on her own will allow her to start that journey. When Cole’s grandmother offers the Douchett family cabin, Kelli jumps at the opportunity.

The whole town is invested in seeing Cole and Kelli find their way to an HEA, and a snowy Christmas in an isolated cabin may just be the perfect setting for that to happen.

“A Seaside Christmas” by Susan Donovan

Annie Parker runs a shop on Bayberry Island in which she sells mermaid memorabilia including her self-published erotic romance novels about mermaids and sea captains. Although Annie is affectionately tolerant of the island’s mermaid worshipers and makes good use of the legend of the sea captain whose ship was supernaturally saved by a beautiful mermaid, she puts no credence in the magical properties of the huge mermaid statue for which Bayberry Island is famous. Each season when the tourists arrive, Annie selects a lover from among the sexiest male visitors, making sure that he understands her no-man-past-Columbus-Day rule. Annie’s routine changes one stormy winter solstice when the ferry delivers a stranger to the island.

Nathaniel Ravelle has come to Bayberry Island from Los Angeles to do some preliminary work for the cable paranormal reality show, Truly Weird. For the past four years, he has served as a segment producer on the show, but this assignment on a mermaid statue who has been granting HEAs to true lovers since the nineteenth century may be one show too many for Nat, who doesn’t believe in lasting romantic love with or without supernatural aid. Ruing the day he left sunny California for icy Massachusetts, he begins to fight his way to the B&B where he has reservations, only to be distracted by the unusual wares in the window of Annie’s shop. The distraction is just enough to cause him to slip on the ice and fall unconscious at Annie’s door.

Whether it’s mermaid magic or just love’s magic, Annie and Nat are soon breaking all their rules and acting out fantasies that rival the activities of Annie’s characters. Christmas promises to be merrier than these two had even dreamed.

“Mistletoe on Main Street” by LuAnn McLane

Toy store owner Ava Whimsy has been Mrs. Claus in Cricket Creek, Kentucky’s annual Christmas parade for the past ten years, but this year the parade holds a big surprise for her. Santa is not tavern owner Jack Scully but his son Clint, who hasn’t been back to Cricket Creek since he left fifteen years ago.  Not even a fake beard is enough to prevent the sight of her high school sweetheart from speeding up Ava’s heartbeat.

Clint has found nothing in California to compare with the beauty and warmth of the girl he left behind in Cricket Creek, and there’s nothing he’d like better than a second chance with Ava. But can she forgive him for leaving, especially when his dreams of playing major league baseball never progressed past the dream stage.

One kiss under the mistletoe is just the beginning of a reconnection that holds the promise of a lifetime of Christmases together.

“The Christmas Gift” by Alexis Morgan

Bridey Roke left her unfaithful, verbally abusive husband and her job as pastry chef at his family’s fancy restaurant to start a new life in Snowberry Creek, Washington, a few miles from Seattle. She has found contentment in the small town and in creating new pastries for the patrons of Something Brewing, her coffeeshop/bakery. A new man in town has become a regular at Something Brewing, and Bridey admits to herself that he certainly adds interest to the local scenery.

Seth Kyser is burned out from his high pressure, high profile life as a well-known wood sculptor. He has lost not only the joy he once found in creating his sculptures; he has lost the ability to envision the shape in the wood and free it. He bought a log cabin in Snowberry Creek, hoping that the slow pace of life in a small town where nobody knows who he is will restore his creative powers. Finding Bridey Roke is an unexpected gift, and Seth can only hope that offering to build the new cabinets she needs in the kitchen of Something Brewing will give them a chance to become much better acquainted.

This Christmas may just be the merriest Bridey and Seth have ever known, but only if they don’t let his secret identity and her ex-husband sound sour notes in the midst of the beautiful holiday music they are making together.

Three of these authors share Christmas in fictional small towns which will already be familiar to some readers. JoAnn Ross’s Shelter Bay story follows six novels, the fifth book in LuAnn McLane’s Cricket Creek series was released the same day as this anthology, and Alexis Morgan’s Snowberry Creek serves as the setting for one novel with two more in the series to follow in 2014. Only Susan Donovan’s Bayberry Island will be new to readers. (Her first Bayberry Island novel will be released December 3.) While familiarity will doubtless please fans of the series, a reader can enjoy all four novellas without having read the novels that precede them.

All four stories have the charm and warmth readers anticipate in Christmas romance fiction. They are all low on conflict and high on Christmas festivities and sweetness. Donovan’s story predictably is the sexiest of the four, but even it is has a relatively mild level of sensuality. The anthology is designed to be a quick, easy, feel-good holiday reading experience for those who like celebrating the season with Christmas romances. It satisfies on all those counts. I recommend it served with your beverage of choice and Christmas tree lights twinkling in the background.
