Murder in Highbury

An Emma Knightley Mystery - Book 1
Publisher: Kensington Books
Release Date: October 22, 2024

Less than one year into her marriage to respected magistrate George Knightley, Emma has grown unusually content in her newfound partnership and refreshed sense of independence. The height of summer sees the former Miss Woodhouse gracefully balancing the meticulous management of her elegant family estate and a flurry of social engagements, with few worries apart from her beloved father’s health . . .

But cheery circumstances change in an instant when Emma and Harriet Martin, now the wife of one of Mr. Knightley’s tenant farmers, discover a hideous shock at the local church. The corpse of Mrs. Augusta Elton, the vicar’s wife, has been discarded on the altar steps—the ornate necklace she often wore stripped from her neck . . .

As a chilling murder mystery blooms and chaos descends upon the tranquil village of Highbury, the question isn’t simply who committed the crime, but who wasn’t secretly wishing for the unpleasant woman’s demise. When suspicions suddenly fall on a harmless local, Emma—armed with wit, unwavering determination, and extensive social connections—realizes she must discreetly navigate an investigation of her own to protect the innocent and expose the ruthless culprit hiding in plain sight.

PJ's Thoughts:

If you like Jane Austen, if you like cozy mysteries, or if you just enjoy a well-written story with intriguing characters set in the bucolic English countryside, Murder in Highbury is a book that should be added to your fall reading list.

Vanessa Kelly is one of my favorite historical romance authors. I enjoy the humor, passion, danger, and adventure I've come to expect from her books and wasn't sure how I felt about her move to this new genre. After reading Murder in Highbury, I can say, without reservation, that I love it. Kelly's homage to Austen's Emma is charming and cozy, with a tightly-crafted mystery, lively characters who light up the page, and a beautifully descriptive setting that immersed me in the small village of Highbury and the secrets she's been keeping.

I enjoyed this book so much that I wanted to read it in one day but the leisurely pace of the village and her citizens forced me to slow down, savor the story, and give it the time it deserved. It enabled me to fully appreciate the nuances that Kelly has infused into the characters as well as the subtle twists and turns that kept me guessing as to who among the citizenry may have been involved in the murder.

I am hooked and already looking forward to Emma Knightley's next foray into amateur sleuthing. I would be happy if Vanessa Kelly planned many more books for this delightful series.

Charlotte “Charlie” Stewart would rather don a kilt and ride her horse than simper in a ballroom. But with her younger sister about to be wed, she can’t escape the pressure to be next. A husband has been chosen, and Charlie’s fate seems set. Until an afternoon gallop sends her horse colliding with Kade Kendrick, the broad-shouldered Highlander who was once her childhood pal . . .

As a youth, Kade felt overshadowed by his older siblings. Now he’s a renowned musician whose fame provides cover for his other work—as a spy. Home from his latest mission, he’s annoyed to be roped into attending the wedding of a family friend—until it reunites him with the fearless tomboy who has become a breathtaking beauty. And though his thoughts should be on a new concerto, Kade is soon distracted by rival suitors, a dangerous quest—and the unconventional woman who fills his soul with music and his body with desire . . .

PJ's Thoughts:

I fully expected Logan and Donella (The Highlander's Christmas Bride) to finish out Vanessa Kelly's Clan Kendrick series as my favorite couple. Leave it to youngest brother, Kade and unconventional Charlie to slide in at the eleventh hour and steal the title away.

Kelly incorporates all my favorite facets of this series into this sixth and final book. There's mystery and mayhem, meddlesome family, pitch-perfect humor, heart-tugging romance, a nasty villain, plenty of twists and turns, and did I mention meddlesome family? Oh yes, the Kendricks are at it again. Kade's Grandda Angus is front and center (of course) but this time he has Kade's brother Royal and Royal's wife Ainsley (The Highlander Who Protected Me) helping. I especially enjoyed the relationship that developed between Ainsley and Charlie and the understanding and acceptance that was missing within Charlie's own family.

I loved the romance between Kade and Charlie. These two were perfect for one another. Watching them come to that conclusion and finally claim the love and life that was meant to be was pure joy. There's much more I could say about their journey but each reader should have the opportunity to discover all the delicious little details on their own.

If you're new to the Kendrick family, you should still be able to read and enjoy this book on its own merits. However, for those of you who have read the entire series (like me), it's very satisfying to tag along on Kade's journey to love after watching him grow up through his siblings' books. The Highlander's Kilted Bride not only offers another fun, swoony, heartfelt highlander romance but also a fond farewell to a much loved family. It has my enthusiastic recommendation.

Review & Giveaway - - The Highlander's Holiday Wife

The Highlander's Holiday Wife

It's
Christmastime in Edinburgh, but Lady Samantha Penwith’s secret mission takes no holiday: the Highlands-born lass vows to find the assailants who murdered her beloved husband, founder of a charitable school for orphaned boys. On her latest undercover excursion, she closes in on a pair of armed attackers and interrupts another assault, then disappears into the darkness, leaving the lone victim mystified—and lucky to be alive . . .

Braden Kendrick may be the sensible brother, yet the dedicated doctor routinely ignores the dangers of his late-night calls to the city’s slums. But when a fleet-footed rescuer saves his life, he’s determined to uncover the stranger’s identity. And once he does, he’ll find himself facing his own past loss for the first time—and more than willing to risk his heart again, just in time to make the Clan Kendrick’s Christmas celebrations more festive than ever . . .

PJ's Thoughts:

I had doubts that any of Kelly's Kendrick couples would be able to equal Logan and Donella in my affections but dang if Braden, the quietest among them, and intrepid Samantha weren't up for the challenge. I adored them, couldn't put their book down, and cheered them on the entire way. The Highlander's Holiday Wife is now one of my top two favorite Clan Kendrick books.

Kelly threw me into the action from the get-go with this book and never really let up until I reached the end. It's a tightly-crafted, fast-paced tale filled with suspense, danger, emotional depth, humor, betrayal, abduction, murder, and, of course, romance. Much of the humor is once again provided by the loving, meddling, and always entertaining Kendrick clan with Logan, Donella, their children, Grandda Angus, and the youngest Kendrick brother, Kade taking the supporting cast leads this time around. It was fun to watch Braden navigate their meddling while balancing his frustration with the surety of their love and support. I'm going to be very sad when Kelly finally says goodbye to this family. They're one of my fictional favorites. But they aren't the only creators of humor in this book. Several of Samantha's scenes had me chuckling out loud as well. Kelly is very good at knowing when to insert a snappy retort, sarcastic aside, or other type of organic humor to lighten tension.

I love the banter between Braden and Samantha. Also the respect, admiration, and growing affection. I enjoy how they work together. And I love their chemistry. I also enjoy how Kelly deftly balances their gradually deepening feelings with the growing intensity of the danger and mystery surrounding the disappearance of children from the orphanage supported by Samantha's foundation and her quest to discover the truth behind her husband's death. The emotional evolution of both characters is tightly woven together with unexpected twists that plunge them into life-threatening danger, revealing secrets that took me by surprise and events that kept me guessing what would happen next. My favorite kind of book!

The Highlander's Holiday Wife hit all my happy reader buttons, giving me a fast-paced, emotionally satisfying story with plenty of humor, heart, and adventure to keep me eagerly flipping pages from beginning to end. It has my enthusiastic recommendation.

Though some continuing series characters have key roles, Braden and Samantha's story itself is begun and completed within the pages of this book. For that reason, readers new to the series should be able to begin with The Highlander's Holiday Wife and not feel lost or confused.

Miss Kathleen Calvert may be the daughter of an Irish aristocrat, but she has no intention of acting like one. All she desires is to return to her family’s estate to raise horses and manage her father’s magnificent gardens. But when a scandal threatens her reputation, her parents order her to a remote Scottish estate, hoping she will finally learn to behave like a proper lady. To make matters worse, her escort is a handsome Highlander who just happens to be the most boring man in all of Scotland . . .

After a youth of dangerous and wild escapades, Grant Kendrick surprised his family—and himself—by becoming a successful businessman and the most respectable Kendrick brother. But does that matter, when the beautiful and free-spirited Kathleen deems him a stodgy bore? Luckily, he gets the chance to prove her wrong when their carriage is ambushed by thieves. But it will take all his ingenuity to protect the beautiful lass who has stormed her way into his heart—and to convince her that a life with him will be a love-filled adventure . . .

PJ's Thoughts:

Vanessa Kelly takes readers back to Scotland for another adventure with her boisterous, meddling, and loving Kendrick clan. This time, it's twin Grant who finds himself on an unexpected journey to love with an Irish lass with a penchant for finding trouble.

When Kelly's Kendrick family is involved, I can be assured the story will be overflowing with adventure, mischief, humor, family, romance, and fun. This fourth book certainly has all of that. I enjoyed the slow-burn relationship between Kathleen and Grant. The progress of their relationship is very gradual, allowing them the time to move from acquaintances to friends to more. I liked the way they challenged one another and how each of them evolved over the course of the book. There's a sweetness to their love, along with the fire. They bring out the best in one another as, together, they are finally able to grow into their authentic selves, the people they were meant to be.

There is a rather large secondary cast of characters in the story, featuring many of the Kendrick family, which is always fun for fans of the series, as well as secondary characters from Graeme's book, The Highlander's English Bride, and new ones including an especially nasty villain.  A special treat for me was the appearance of Gillian (My Fair Princess), one of my favorite Kelly heroines. She always livens up a story! Unfortunately, there was also a prominently featured character I did not enjoy: Kathleen's sister, Jeannie, an annoying, self-centered, sixteen-year-old who acted more like a spoiled, selfish child than a young woman. She dominated the story with her antics, to the point where, for me, every scene she was in overshadowed the other characters and not in a positive way. She finally redeemed herself but by then I didn't care. Others may feel differently about her but, for me, every appearance by her drained more of my pleasure from Grant and Kathleen's story. I understood her character's purpose in the overall story but I just wanted her gone.

The mystery was well plotted and even though I guessed the villain pretty early on I was still kept in suspense as to how it would all play out. The first half of the book was a slow build but the pace really picked up in the last half with both the action and romance racing to another satisfying Kendrick conclusion.

While I don't think you have to read the entire series to fully enjoy The Highlander's Irish Bride (though I loved them all), I do recommend reading at least The Highlander's English Bride as the characters, setting, and storylines from that book feature prominently in this one.

There are two Kendrick brothers left and I am eager to discover what kind of adventure, laughter, and romance Kelly has in store for them.

In fact, she might be the perfect woman to bring happiness back to his lonely little son's life, just in time for Christmas.  But first he must protect her from ugly gossip and a mysterious threat--and convince her that their wild, unexpected desire is heaven sent.

My thoughts:

I've been reading Vanessa Kelly's books since her debut. Some make me laugh, some make me cry, some make me sigh with delight. Many do all three. Then there are those that introduce me to characters who draw me into their hearts and their lives; characters who make make me want to revisit them time and again. The Highlander's Christmas Bride is one of those books and Logan, Donella and Joseph (Logan's son- I adored that kid), three such characters.

This book is just so much fun. It made me laugh, made me cry, made me want to go back and re-read passages over and over. I loved Donella. Having read the book where she was first introduced, I was not prepared for the new "kicked to the curb by the convent" version of her. I loved her determination, her spirit, and how her non-pious side kept slipping through. I love how protective she is of Logan's son and how they both grow within that relationship. It was so enjoyable watching her evolve as she takes control of her life, starts speaking her mind, grows closer to Logan and his family, and begins to understand, and accept, her true life path. And I love how she finally takes charge of - and responsibility for - the events of the past that have guided her life to this point.

Logan is one of my all-time favorite Vanessa Kelly heroes. My heart ached for everything he'd been through and cheered his newly restored relationship with his family. I loved Logan and Donella together; how she stoked his interest and respect while they were on the run from kidnappers, how he introduced her to her sensual side and opened her eyes to possibilities of a different life than she had imagined. I loved the courting process that only one of them seemed to be aware of. Of course, their eventual love didn't come without a few bumps - and one nasty ex - along the way. I'll be honest. I wanted consequences for that woman!

There's a lively cast of family members from previous (and hopefully, future) books who are all up in Logan and Donella's business in this book. It's fun catching up with everyone but, at times, it can be a bit overwhelming and detract from the primary couple. Overall, though, I loved seeing everyone in both Logan's and Donella's families and how they interact as well as how previous couples' relationships are progressing. Kelly is very good with family dynamics.

While The Highlander's Christmas Bride can be enjoyed as a standalone, for a deeper understanding of the characters and the journeys that have brought them to this point, I suggest also reading The Highlander's Princess Bride (Victoria Knight & Nick Kendrick), The Highlander Who Protected Me (Royal Kendrick & Ainsley Matthews), and the book in which Donella first appears, How to Marry a Royal Highlander (Alec Gilbride & Eden Whitney).

Are you reading Vanessa Kelly's Clan Kendrick series? Do you have a favorite Kendrick couple so far? Whose book are you most looking forward to reading?

Clan Kendrick - Book 2

Release Date: October 29, 2019

In bestselling author Vanessa Kelly’s irresistible Clan Kendrick series, Christmas in the Highlands means family, celebration—and for one brother, the beginning of a passionate adventure . . .

Being thrown over by the man she expected to marry was humiliating enough. Now that Donella Haddon, grandniece of the Earl of Riddick, has also proven a failure as a nun, she has no choice but to return to her family’s estate. The brawny Highlander sent to escort her is brash, handsome, and the only thing standing between Donella and a gang of would-be kidnappers. But the scandal in her past can’t be so easily outrun . . .

Wealthy widower Logan Kendrick was expecting to meet a plain, pious spinster—not a gorgeous, sharp-tongued lass who can hold her own in any ambush. Though she’s known as the Flower of Clan Graham, Donella is no shrinking violet. In fact, she might be the perfect woman to bring happiness back to his lonely little son’s life, just in time for Christmas.  But first he must protect her from ugly gossip and a mysterious threat—and convince her that their wild, unexpected desire is heaven sent.

Set-up: Donella Haddon has spent the last three years in a convent in a remote corner of Scotland. But the good sisters have decided she’s not suited to life as a nun. Much to her chagrin, Donella has been asked to leave. Logan Kendrick, widower, wealthy businessman, and friend to Donella’s family, agrees to provide her an escort home to Blairgal Castle.

Once on the road, however, masked men try to abduct Donella. Thanks to Logan, the plot fails, but he and Donella are forced to flee. In disguise and with Donella masquerading as Logan’s little brother, they take refuge at a small inn. When the mysterious plotters track them down, they prepare to escape once again.

PS. Some of my readers might recognize Donella from an earlier book, HOW TO MARRY A ROYAL HIGHLANDER (Renegade Royals 4). J

The Highlander's Christmas Bride

Donella stomped her foot down into her boot and straightened. “So, what do we do?”
“Since we can’t go waltzing out the front door, I’m off to do a little more skulking to see if we can make it out through the back. If not, we’ll have to use the window to make our escape.”
She regarded his proposed exit with a dubious eye. “Are you sure you’ll fit? You are rather large.”
“I’m aware of that.” It would appear that large men were not her type, which he found rather irritating.
She was a nun. She doesn’t have a type.
“I’ll manage it,” he added, “but I would prefer the back door.”
“How are we going to get to our horse?”
     “We’re not.”
Her eyebrows shot up. “We’re walking?”
“Yes. We’re going up into the hills.”
     “But—”
“Donella, we can discuss the plan once we get out of here, all right?”
Her lips thinned, but then she gave a terse nod. “What do you want me to do?”
“I suggest you take the chance to use the chamber pot, since we’ll be leaving as soon as I return.”
She winced. “I must say this is turning out to be the most embarrassing episode of my entire life.”
He flashed a smile as he headed to the door. “Chin up, lass. Just think of it as a grand adventure.”
     “I hate adventures,” she muttered.
He slipped out into the hall. For a woman who hated adventures, she’d done well, displaying both strength and character. Most girls of her class would have succumbed to hysterics long ago. And though she had a tendency to argue, she’d followed his orders when it counted.
Logan had the impression from her family that Donella was a biddable, even shy woman who retreated into the background. Yet he’d found her quite the opposite, which probably accounted for her dismissal from the nunnery. Donella might not be the sort of girl to flirt or talk the ears off a man, but biddable or shy? Not a chance.
He’d only known her for a few days, but there seemed to be more to Donella than her family realized.
The inn was stirring. Dishes clattered in the taproom and footsteps thumped on the floor above. The entrance hall was empty, but that meant Hamish was likely still out gabbing with the mysterious riders. If those men had a particle of brains, they would soon deduce that something was off about Mr. MacDonald and his strange little brother.
Logan risked a careful look out the window. A stable boy washed down the cobblestones, but otherwise the yard appeared deserted. But that did them no good since they needed to head up into the hills, not back on the road.
Retreating, he paused to leave some coin on the desk, then quickly made his way back down the hall to the door at the end of the wing. He’d just cracked it open when he heard a shout from the direction of the stables. Feet pounded across the cobblestones, followed by more shouting and a call to search the inn.
     Dammit to hell.
Under normal circumstances, he’d have no qualms about confronting the blighters but wouldn’t take any chances with Donella’s safety. He had to get her out of harm’s way as quickly as possible.
Moments later, he was back in the room. Donella was fully dressed and folding up a small bundle into a makeshift sack.
“I thought we might be able to use the blanket and extra candles,” she explained.
“Good thinking.” He shot the bolt across the door.
     “I see it’s the window.”
     “Aye.”
Donella followed him to the window. Logan slung his kit over his shoulder and yanked back the shutter, then pushed the latticed window open.
“I hope you made use of the chamber pot,” he said as he hoisted her onto the sill.
She swung her legs over. “If you mention that one more time, I will clobber you.”
The drop to the ground was a little high for his liking. “Careful, now. We don’t want you—”
Donella kicked off the sill, landing in a neat crouch before looking up at him. “You were saying, sir?”
He snorted and dropped his kit and her bundle to the ground. When he started to climb through the opening, he discovered it was quite a tight fight.
     “Don’t get stuck,” she warned.
As if he’d let that happen.
Logan pulled back and stripped off his greatcoat, tossing it down to her. Then he grabbed the top of the window frame and pulled himself up, then swung through in one go. He managed to tear a sleeve on the way down, but otherwise was unscathed.
Donella blinked at him. “That was quite impressive.”
“I might say the same about you, lass.”
Her smile was shy. “Thank you. I was rather athletic as a young girl.” The smile faded. “For a while, anyway.”
There was a story there, and he found himself wanting to hear it. For now, he had other things to worry about, like getting their arses out of harm’s way.
He shrugged back into his greatcoat. “Athletic is good right now.”
Donella had already slung her bundle over her shoulder, so he grabbed his kit and guided her toward a farmer’s field behind the inn. They dodged through a kitchen garden, having to crouch at one point below a low hedge when they heard some more shouting, but they were able to skulk away without incident.
A few hedgerows and a field of oats later, they were safely away. Repeated glances over his shoulder told Logan that no one had yet thought to check behind the inn.
Miracle of miracles, they’d pulled it off. Now, all they had was a stiff day’s climb up to a crofter’s cottage. There he hoped they would find shelter and a hopefully not-too-long and not-too-cold wait for rescue. He trusted that Davey and Foster had gotten through with his message to Lord Riddick. If not, he would have to devise another plan to get Donella home.
They splashed through a little creek that separated the field from the first set of foothills. Logan glanced at Donella, who seemed unperturbed by their narrow escape.
     “Ready for a climb, lass?”
She shot him a wry glance. ”’I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills.’”
Then she set off briskly up the narrow track, leaving him to follow in her footsteps.

Today's Special - - Vanessa Kelly

I'm happy to host one of my favorite authors today and especially excited because it's in celebration of her new book, The Highlander Who Protected Me. I have to say, I really do love that cover! Vanessa Kelly introduced her Kendrick brothers in her last book and I am all in with this fiercely loyal, somewhat dysfunctional, rowdy, but loving, group of highlanders just begging for happy endings. Welcome back, Vanessa!

Make ‘Em Laugh
Vanessa Kelly

Hi, everyone, and my thanks to PJ for hosting me. The Romance Dish is one of my favorite places on the world-wide-interweb, and I love being here!

I’m particularly thrilled to be celebrating the release of THE HIGHLANDER WHO PROTECTED ME, the first book in my new Scottish historical romance series. The series features the brawny and sometimes rambunctious brothers of the Kendrick Clan, who were first introduced in THE HIGHLANDER'S PRINCESS BRIDE (Improper Princesses 3).

THE HIGHLANDER WHO PROTECTED ME is Royal and Ainsley’s book. For me, it’s very close to what authors call “the book of the heart.” Both Royal and Ainsley are emotionally wounded—Royal, from his wartime experiences, Ainsley, from the result of an assault. But they are fierce survivors, each of them battling the circumstances and people trying to hold them back. I love these two because they never, ever give up—even when they’re fighting with each other! And I also have to admit I cried more while writing this story than with any of my other books.

So, THE HIGHLANDER WHO PROTECTED ME has lots of
feels but it has quite a bit of humor, too. Over the years, I’ve discovered that much of the humor in my books comes from secondary characters. In this book, it’s Royal’s grandfather, Angus. He’s an old-school Highlander curmudgeon who was first introduced in THE HIGHLANDER’S PRINCESS BRIDE, and he’s been trying to take over the series ever since (I’ve had a few stern discussions with him about that). Angus is crusty as heck, but he’s devoted to his family and clan, and will do anything to protect them—including insulting Ainsley on a regular basis, since he’s absolutely convinced she’s not good enough for his grandson. Ainsley being Ainsley, she doesn’t take it lying down, and the two have a fairly lively relationship.

And let me just say that Angus has a way with words. His favorite label for Ainsley is Sassenach saucebox (which she kind of is), but he really hits his stride when it comes to nicknames for the villain of the book—Lord Codpiece is the first that comes to mind, and it goes from there.

Here’s a short snippet from the book, which takes place on Royal and Ainsley’s wedding night. They’ve retreated to Castle Kinglas, the family estate in the Highlands, hoping for some quiet time for themselves, and Ainsley’s infant daughter, Tira. Royal has been desperate to get Ainsley alone, and he finally achieves his goal.

**

They were just about to sink down onto the plump cushions of the chaise when the library door flew open and thudded against the wall. Ainsley jerked back, her foot tangling around his boot, and they almost tumbled to the floor as Angus stomped into the room.

“Oh, my God,” she gasped as Royal set her upright.

His grandfather scowled at them. “I’ve been lookin’ all over the bloody castle for ye.”

Ainsley leveled an accusatory glare at Royal. “You promised your family would leave us alone. You promised.”

“I bloody well didn’t ask him to come,” Royal protested. “Why the hell are you here, Grandda? It’s practically the middle of the night.”

“Och, it’s not that late,” Angus replied with a casual wave. “I’ve been here for at least a half hour, after a nice ride up from Glasgow. And that glad I am to be away from the stinkin’ city and back home.”

Royal felt like the top of his head was about to fizz up like an exploding squib. “But why are you here?”

“I couldna sleep knowin’ that the little lassie would be missin’ her grandda. So here I am.”

“Oh, my God,” Ainsley repeated, sounding utterly appalled.

“Do Nick and Victoria know you rode up?” Royal demanded.

Angus hunched his shoulders and gave him a placating smile. “Dinna fash yourself, lad. I left them a grand little note to explain.”

“Grandda, this is our wedding trip.” Never had Royal been closer to throttling Angus than he was at this moment.

“Aye, that’s the point. I can watch out for Tira while ye and the missus have a wee bit of private time. Ye’ll hardly even know I’m aboot the place.”

Ainsley switched her Medusa glare to Angus. “You are so irritating. I’m supposed to be looking after my daughter, in case you’ve forgotten.”

“Aye, and ye can bloody well use all the help ye can get,” the old man retorted, “especially since the puir wee bairn is feeling poorly. I could tell Tira was off her feed before ye left. It’s no wonder I decided to follow ye.”

When Angus tapped the side of his nose, trying to look wise, Royal had to hold back a scoff. The excuse sounded like complete bollocks to him.

Ainsley went from irate to anxious in a matter of seconds. “What do you mean poorly? I was with her an hour ago, and she was asleep.”

“She’s not sleepin’ now. That’s why I came down to fetch ye.” He flashed her a toothy smile. “As ye say, yer her mother. I knew ye’d want to be with her.”

Ainsley picked up her skirts and pelted out of the room.

Sighing, Royal followed in her wake, Angus falling into step beside him.

“Is Tira really sick, or was that just an excuse to come to Kinglas?” he asked his grandfather.

Angus shrugged. “Probably just another tooth coming in, but ye never know.”

Royal shot him a dirty look. “One of these days, Grandda, I will kill you.”

Angus snorted. “Laddie, none of ye would know what to do without me, least of all yer new missus. Even for a Sassenach, she’s bloody hopeless.”

I often find secondary characters easier to write than my main characters. As a reader, I think a great secondary character can really add texture and color to a book. Sometimes, those characters are so strong they even demand their own stories!

Who are some of your favorite secondary characters in novels, romance or otherwise?

One person who comments will win signed, print copies of THREE WEEKS WITH A PRINCESS and THE HIGHLANDER’S PRINCESS BRIDE (Improper Princesses 2 & 3), plus some fun book swag.

Lady Ainsley Matthews, heiress and darling of the ton, was expected to make a magnificent match. Instead she’s hiding on a remote Scottish estate, terrified that her vicious former fiancé will use her pregnancy to force her into marriage. One man can help her—Royal Kendrick, son of a distinguished Highland clan. Though a mistake drove them apart long ago, Royal is the only person Ainsley trusts to protect her baby—even if that means agreeing to never see either of them again . . .

Scarred in body and soul by war, Royal suddenly has a purpose—caring for an innocent babe and thereby helping the woman he can’t stop loving. But when Ainsley ultimately returns to Scotland, determined to be a real mother to her child in spite of the risk, there’s only one solution: marriage. And only one likely outcome: surrendering to the desire that’s simmered between them for so long, no matter how dangerous it may be . . .

Today's Special - - Q&A with Vanessa Kelly

I'm delighted to welcome Vanessa Kelly back to The Romance Dish today. Vanessa's new release, The Highlander's Princess Bride brings her popular Improper Princesses trilogy to a close and at the same time, introduces a new family of characters who will be at the heart of her next series. I have loved this trilogy which includes two of my all-time favorite Kelly heroines plus adventure, romance, and sigh-worthy happy endings. Vanessa Kelly continues to get better and better with each book she writes. If you enjoy humor, heart, adventure, and romance set within a family of Highlander brothers in need of taming, I highly recommend The Highlander's Princess Bride

Welcome back, Vanessa! It’s always a pleasure to host you here at the Dish.

PJ, thank you for hosting me! The Romance Dish has always been one of my favorite spots in Romancelandia.

I’m so excited about the recent release of The Highlander’s Princess Bride. It’s one of my all-time favorite Vanessa Kelly books. Please tell our readers what they should expect from this story.

I’m SO glad you enjoyed it! THE HIGHLANDER’S PRINCESS BRIDE is book 3 in my Improper Princesses Series, which features heroines who are the illegitimate daughters of English royalty. My heroine, Victoria Knight, is the offspring of the Prince Regent himself—and a barmaid. Victoria is also a governess and a devoted teacher, and wants nothing more from life than to establish her own teaching seminary for young ladies. Fate and a murder charge put her on a different course, however, straight to the Highlands and the arms of Nicholas Kendrick, the Earl of Arnprior.

The book is basically a mash-up of the classic movie musicals Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and The Sound of Music. Victoria finds herself trying to manage a household of rambunctious Highland men, all while falling in love with Nick, the oldest brother. There is also an irascible Scottish grandfather, some very bad doggies, and a scary villain. In other words…romance and mayhem!

I didn't realize you intended the book to be a mash-up of two of my favorite musicals until after reading it but it's a description that fits this story perfectly.

I adored Victoria. She and Gillian top my list of favorite Kelly heroines. Is Victoria the last of the improper princesses or will we be meeting more?

This book is actually a spin-off to a new series called Clan Kendrick, which will feature Nick’s brothers as heroes. But there very well might be novellas featuring more Improper Princesses or their male cousins and half-brothers, The Renegade Royals. I really enjoy writing about these characters, and would like to visit them again.

Nick captured my heart right along with Victoria’s. Who’s the last hero (not written by you) that captured yours? What made him special?

I absolutely adore Michael, Lord Acton, the hero of the Doyle and Acton Series by Anne Cleeland. This is a fabulous mystery series featuring a VERY different sort of hero. Acton is mysterious, brilliant, absolutely devoted to Doyle, and more than a bit crazy—or as Doyle calls him, slightly “bent”. I’m in awe of Cleeland’s writing and I was captivated by the unusual love story she created with these characters. Acton has got to be one of the most loyal and devoted heroes in fiction!

I'm so excited you're planning stories for Nick's brothers. I’ve fallen in love with the Kendrick family. Who's up first?

The first book in the Clan Kendrick Series will be out in Nov. 2018. It’s Royal’s story, and it’s called THE HIGHLANDER WHO PROTECTED ME. Big, bad Logan is up after that…and then I have to figure out who goes next!

You and your husband also write together as V.K. Sykes. Do the two of you have any new books in the works?

We’re currently working on another baseball romance in The Philadelphia Patriots Series. Hubby is also waiting on me to revise another romantic suspense. He’s a very fast writer!

Great news! I've enjoyed both your baseball and romantic suspense stories.

Rapid Fire Q&A:

Early Bird or Night Owl?

SO night owl!

Apple Cinnamon or Pumpkin Spice?

Pumpkin all the way!

Hot cider or Hot chocolate?

Always go with chocolate!

Favorite new TV show?

Ozark. OMG, so good.

Book you’re currently reading?

Rereading A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

What’s next?

Working away on my Highlander heroes! I also expect to have a novella or two out sometime in the spring of 2018.

Where can readers find you online?

Thanks for visiting with us today, Vanessa! Would you like to ask our readers a question?

Thanks so much, PJ! I’d love to know what non-romance books (if any) people are reading. I’m always on the lookout for recs outside the genre!

Vanessa is giving away signed, print copies of MY FAIR PRINCESS and THREE WEEKS WITH A PRINCESS to one randomly chosen reader who leaves a comment before 11:00 PM (Eastern), November 4.
