A governess and her secret take an invincible duke by storm...

The Duke of Hurtheven will stop at nothing to protect those he loves. So, when a mysterious new governess captures his godchild’s affection, he vows to uncover her secrets. Instead, she sets him aflame.

Miss Hera Bythesea accepted a governess position to secure the character reference she needs to reclaim her secret child. But she did not count on Hurtheven—curious, relentless, and temptation in human form.

In Hera's world, Hurtheven faces a challenge his power and wealth cannot solve. But for the love of unwed mother and child, he’ll undertake any Herculean Labor.

PJ's Thoughts:

I waited six years for this third and final book in Wendy LaCapra's Mythic Dukes series. It stands to reason that my expectations were high. I'm happy to report that those expectations were not only met but exceeded in another compelling, immersive, historical romance journey from this talented author. It's also a testament to the enduring impact of her characters that after six years I didn't have to reread the first two books in the series to refresh my memory. Ash, Chev, Pen, and Alicia, as well as their own emotional journeys to love, continue to live rent free in my mind. And, I have no plans to evict them anytime soon.

That's one of the things I most enjoy about LaCapra's writing: the depth she imbues in the characters she creates. There are no cardboard cutouts here, no surface characters lacking emotional layers. LaCapra takes the time to fully develop these characters on a page who end up feeling more like real-life friends. She gives them complex layers, repressed emotions, tangled back stories, and current challenges. She then skillfully - with humor, poignant emotion, sparkling banter, steamy chemistry, endearing qualities, personal reckoning, and the help of a few good friends - guides them to the best versions of themselves and to the love for which they've been waiting a lifetime. It's an immersive experience I never tire of and one I look forward to repeating with each new book. As with the earlier couples, I fell in love with Hurtheven and Hera, fell into their story with all of my emotions on display, and read their entire book in one day.

The supporting cast in this book is vibrantly depicted, richly nuanced, and vitally important to the overall story. Scenes featuring Hurtheven and Hera with Ash and Alicia's children, in particular, are filled with laugh-out-loud humor, sigh-worthy emotion, and a looking glass view into the tender parts of our intrepid hero as well as the strength, courage, and fears of our heroine. Fans of the first two books will no doubt enjoy this look into the extended HEA of those couples. Those new to the series should be able to enjoy Her Duke at Midnight on its own, however, for a complete understanding of the strength - and history - of the friendship among the three dukes, plus the nuances of the various romantic relationships, I recommend reading the three stories in order. The first two are Her Duke at Daybreak (novella) and His Duchess at Eventide (full length novel). Click on the titles to read my reviews.

In an act of revenge, Lord Rayne kissed Lady Julia and was sent packing to America. But now he’s back to settle his affairs and give away his sister in marriage, until he meets up with the alluring yet innocent Lady Julia again. He doesn’t regret their first kiss, but he was never good enough for her.

Lady Julia had two years to forget the moody and mercurial Earl of Rayne. But one look, and she knows they’re meant to be together. Be damned with his and her brother’s objections, she’ll just jump on the back of Rayne’s departing carriage and compromise them both thoroughly.

Only, Julia never expected her forbidding Lord to be so good at resisting temptation...

My thoughts:

Since her 2015 debut, Wendy LaCapra has captivated me with her deeply emotional and sensual stories, becoming one of my favorite historical romance authors. Her newest book, Diamond in the Rogue, brings readers the eagerly anticipated reckoning between the Earl of Rayne and Lady Julia and, I'm happy to report, exceeds my every expectation.

LaCapra is a gifted wordsmith who excels at drawing me into her stories, her settings, her multi-layered characters, and their complex relationships. There is nothing easy about the relationship between Rayne and Julia, with its many tangled threads woven among family members, fractured friendships, and Rayne and Julia themselves. I enjoy characters who are flawed, who are forced to work for their happy endings, and I adored these two. I've been waiting for their story since book one, Scandal in Spades, released almost two years ago. There's a lot of fence mending to be done and, I'll be honest, I had no idea how LaCapra would accomplish it, but I couldn't wait to take the journey. That's something else I enjoy about LaCapra's books. Her characters are so realistic, so vibrantly depicted, that I never feel as though I'm reading about them. Instead, I become so invested in their lives, they become so important to me, that I take the journey with them. I feel their emotions, their fears, their frustrations, their hope, their love, and their happiness. It's an emotional roller coaster, to be sure, but one I happily take time and time again.

This book will stand alone but for maximum enjoyment and a complete understanding not only of the characters but the events that have brought them to this point in their relationships, I strongly encourage you to read the books in order: Scandal in Spades, Heart's Desire, and Diamond in the Rogue

Tour Review & Giveaway - - Heart's Desire

Heart's Desire
by Wendy LaCapra
Lords of Chance - Book 2
Publisher: Entangled: Scandalous
Release Date: May 13, 2019
Reviewed by PJ

Lady Clarissa has decided to live life on her terms. After the end of a ten-year betrothal, she wants nothing to do with marriage or the men of the ton. Least of all her friend’s brother, the very charming Lord Markham, or Hearts, as many ladies call the oh-so-handsome earl.
Markham pursues relationships with no ties that bind. Acting the rake leaves everyone satisfied...until he overhears a wager that could lead to Clarissa’s ruin. He can’t help but step in and claim she’s his intended bride.
Clarissa is appalled. She did not need to be saved. Reluctantly, she agrees to the fake courtship, if only to experience what the rakish Markham can offer. But when lust becomes love, Clarissa must make up her own terms and bet it all on Hearts.

My thoughts:

LaCapra takes the hero/heroine dynamic and turns it on its head in this newest addition to her Lords of Chance series. One might reasonably expect Markham, a rakish favorite among London's wives and widows, to hold the reins in this relationship but Lady Clarissa is not at all what he expects. She knows what she wants and is willing to demand it. Will Markham challenge her for control or does this rake's heart desire something completely different?

One of the facets of Wendy LaCapra's writing I most enjoy is her ability to create complex, multi-layered characters with hidden depths not apparent upon introduction. Such is the case with Markham and Clarissa. Known throughout London society as Hearts, Markham appears to be a carefree man about town, ready and willing to deliver pleasure where desired. But an unexpected turn of events causes him to reassess society's perception of him, and more importantly, his own. He begins to look deeper within himself and what he realizes will change the course of his life forever. Clarissa, on the other hand, knows exactly what she wants...and what she doesn't. One can hardly blame her, considering her past. But, perhaps there's more to her - and for her - than she realizes as well. If only she can broaden her focus, and open her heart, before her actions cause an irreparable divide.

I started this book thinking I knew Markham's character (from his role in Scandal in Spades). What I discovered is that I didn't know him at all. There is so much more to this man than what he shows the world, such a loving, generous, caring, and wounded, heart. I love how the author gradually allows us to discover the person behind the facade as the character himself is making the same discoveries.

I really felt for Clarissa. The men in her life have been calling the shots for long enough and discovering passion with Markham at a time when she's finally in a position to take control of her life is not at all precipitous. She and Markham are heading in different directions emotionally and you just know LaCapra is going to put them through the wringer before it's all figured out in the end.

Heart's Desire is another satisfying journey from one of my favorite authors, filled with sizzle, touches of humor, heartwarming family dynamics, and a deep well of emotion. The book stands well on its own though characters that were introduced in the first book of the series, Scandal in Spades, have plenty of page time in Heart's Desire as well. Both books have my enthusiastic recommendation.

Lord Cheverley, son of the Duke of Ithwick, never wanted to go to war, but when he eloped against his father’s wishes, the furious Duke forced him to choose—either take a naval commission, or have his marriage annulled. Devastated physically and emotionally by seven years of war, a shipwreck, and six years in the captivity of a brutal pirate, Cheverley returns to England to find that the courts have declared him dead, and his wife is entertaining suitors. Should he demand his rightful place, disrupting his family’s lives, or should he return to sea, seeking vengeance against the pirate? He sets out to find the answer in disguise.

Penelope once believed in love, but then the man who swept her off her feet deserted her, leaving her and her unborn child utterly alone. Now a widow, she will do anything to protect her son, including enlisting the aid of a mysterious sea captain to uncover the true intentions of her devious suitors. When the captain awakens something in Penelope she thought long dead, she begins to suspect he is no stranger. But, as they peel back the layers of a deadly plot, can this broken family heal their wounds in time to save what really matters?

My thoughts:
·
Wendy LaCapra is an author whose stories engage my emotions and leave me eager for more. After enjoying her debut trilogy in 2015, I was sad when she stepped away from writing for a few years but that all changed in 2017 with the publication of her (2018 RITA® nominated) novella, Her Duke at Daybreak. She's back and better than ever.

His Duchess at Eventide, a full-length historical romance that's sweeping in scope and stunning in emotional intensity is, for me, her best writing yet. Penelope and Cheverley drew me into their story as well as their hearts. I traveled this journey with them, experiencing their anger, fear, joy, anguish, yearning, and hope with a full investment in their happiness. LaCapra's beautiful writing brought it all to life, keeping me reading late into the night and finally leaving me with the reassurance that some bonds, though stretched beyond imagination, cannot be broken, that evil foes can be vanquished, that love wins. I won't be forgetting these characters - or their story - for some time. I highly recommend this book.

The Marquess of Bromton has just learned that he’s a bastard. Feeling his honor is at stake, he attempts to bestow his estate upon a rightful heir by manipulating a high-stakes card game. But the winner demands more than Bromton bargained for—a marriage…to his spinster sister. Lady Katherine may be the least marriageable lady in all of England, but a child of their union would be a rightful heir…
Scandal has hardened Lady Katherine and narrowed her world to duty and family. There’s nothing to be trusted in the Society she left behind…especially not the imperious marquess with his single-minded pursuit. Or his knee-weakening kisses. Except, the more their connection deepens, the more Bromton surprises Katherine. But the truth about their courtship could destroy everything…

I love a story where the hero does all the wrong things for all the right reasons. Giles, Marquess of Bromton did not have a happy childhood. Nor did he have the comfort and security of loving parents. All he has is his title and his honor but both are scattered to the wind with his mother's revelations. In pursuing the hand of Lady Katherine, he's doing his best to restore what he truly believes is the lost honor of his title. He thinks marrying her, thereby restoring her standing in society, and ensuring her child will inherit, will be good enough. He's delighted by his attraction to her but he knows nothing of love and doesn't expect this pairing to produce it; isn't even sure if he's capable of the emotion, having never experienced it. He's in for a big surprise.

Giles isn't the only one keeping secrets. Scorned by society after two failed betrothals, Katherine retreated to her family's estate where she has devoted herself to raising her younger sister, managing her brother's estates, and teaching the children of her village. If there are parts of her that yearn to be set free, she keeps them in firm control. After all, the one time she allowed desire free rein it led to tragic consequences that drowned her in shame. She's captivated by Giles yet she can't shake the feeling that he's hiding something though the more she's with him, the fainter the echoes of suspicion become. By the time the truth is revealed, both Katherine and Giles' hearts are fully engaged but will their love be deep enough to fight for their happiness?

I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in LaCapra's new Lords of Chance series. It's filled with the sparkling banter, witty humor, sensuality, and deep emotion I've come to expect from her stories. I loved Katherine's intelligence, her take-charge attitude, her loyalty to her family, and her innate kindness. I enjoyed watching her blossom as she begins to accept her worth and take charge of her happiness. And Giles, how my heart ached for him. He had lessons to learn before he could open his heart fully to the love and happiness just outside his reach. And when he finally does? Oh, my, how my heart fluttered! LaCapra has created an intriguing cast of characters surrounding our hero and heroine who already have me eagerly anticipating their own stories. I'm especially excited for Katherine's sister, Julia and the hero I so hope will become her own.

If you enjoy emotion-filled historical romance with wit, humor, complex characters, sizzle, a good grovel, and sigh-inducing endings, I highly recommend you give Scandal in Spades a try.

Q&A with Wendy LaCapra

Welcome to The Romance Dish, Wendy!

Thank you, PJ! I absolutely love this blog!

Scandal in Spades launches a new historical romance series for you. Please tell our readers what they should expect from this series. What can you share about future books in the series and do you have a publishing timeline?

I’ve planned four books for the series. I’m not sure of the release dates, but the next two, one for ‘Diamonds’ and one for ‘Hearts’ are due in quick succession.

The sparkling banter, battle of wills, and scorching chemistry between Lady Katherine and Lord Bromton were an absolute delight yet you kept me guessing until the very end as to whether they would be able to overcome the obstacles between them. What was it about this couple that convinced you they were destined to be together?

OH! That’s lovely to hear. Thank you so much! Well, Lady Katherine and Lord Bromton both experienced an event that completely altered their self-worth. Katherine’s personality, her love for her siblings, and her inner strength helped her survive. In surviving, she became the perfect match for Bromton, not because of her bloodline, but because of her values. Bromton wants to be a better man, but doesn’t have the same resources to help him find his way.

One of my favorite scenes in this book is when Bromton finally lets down his guard at The Pillar of Salt. What was your favorite scene to write in this book? The most difficult?

I love that scene, too. The song he sings is a real drinking song, by the way. “Blowzabella my Bouncing Doxie” (Very Bawdy for its time). I think I had the most fun with the Billiards scene, though. And I cried when I wrote two other scenes- the carriage ride to London and the final scene between Bromton and Mrs. Warren. It was almost as if I was transcribing something I was watching. That almost never happens.

Having four younger brothers, I especially enjoyed the dynamic between Katherine and her younger brother, Lord Markham. Please tell me you’ll be giving Katherine a chance to meddle in Markham’s love life when his turn comes around?

Yes! Oh, yes! He’ll have his happy ending, though he's been giving me some trouble (it’s awfully hard to get a man named Hearts to settle down). 😊

Two secondary characters I thoroughly enjoyed were Katherine’s sister, Julia and Lord Rayne’s sister, Clarissa. Do you have happy endings planned for these two? I’m keeping my fingers crossed for certain heroes for each of them!

I’m working on Julia’s story now! Julia was inspired by a young lady I met when we were both staying at her uncle’s home a few years ago. I’d never met someone with such sparkling energy & I just knew the world would be wowed by her when she was ready. We haven’t stayed in touch, but I thank her for that inspiration. Clarissa will have her moment to shine as a heroine, too.

Her Duke at Daybreak (which I loved!) was recently named as a finalist for the 2018 Romance Writers of America RITA award for Romance Novella. Congratulations! How did you celebrate? Will you be attending the conference in Denver this summer? And, most important, have you chosen a RITA dress yet? 😉

I’m not sure I *have* celebrated—it doesn’t yet feel real. I’m very proud of Her Duke at Daybreak. At the time, I felt like it was the best thing I’d written. If all goes well, the second book in that series, His Duchess at Eventide, should be out in August. It will be released as part of “Legends of Love,” a group of Regencies by different authors, each retelling a classic legend within the Regency. His Duchess at Eventide is a retelling of Odysseus’s return with more Penelope and (*winces*) without the infidelity/murder/plundering.

And, yes! I will be in Denver. I haven’t purchased a dress, but I have purchased an underdesk cycle that I hope will help me meet my deadlines AND fit into a red dress that I love. 😊

Scandal in Spades was recently named one of my Most Anticipated Romances for 2nd Quarter 2018. What upcoming books are you looking forward to reading?

I am SO excited about Mary Balogh’s Someone to Care. I’ve adored the Westcott series and I can’t wait for Viola’s story. I just finished Stacy Reid’s The Earl in My Bed, and *fans self*--what a fabulous story of revenge and reconciliation.

I enjoy tagging along on your travel adventures through Instagram and Facebook. Any exciting journeys on the horizon?

Actually, I’m about to take a long-planned trans-Atlantic repositioning cruise from Southampton, UK back home to NYC. I had hoped to spend some time in England, but, unfortunately, that’s not going to be possible. It’ll be a working vacation. Things have been kind of crazy this year, and I’m looking forward to being able to write without distraction and, of course, I’m looking forward to heading down to the bar in the evenings for music & fun!

Where are the best places for readers to catch up with you online?

I write under my own name, so if readers don’t mind family posts in the mix, they are welcome to friend me on Facebook. For those that prefer strictly book talk, I have a Facebook page. Twitter is probably the second most likely place to find me. And, I’m warming to Instagram.

Thank you for taking the time to visit with us today, Wendy. Is there anything you’d like to add? Would you like to ask our readers a question?

Thank you so much for having me! It’s a pleasure and an honor. I can’t think of a good question at the moment (unless your readers have tips on getting a good night’s sleep), but I would like to say thank you to everyone for joining me on this ‘visit’!

Readers, let's help Wendy get some sleep so she can write more great books for us to read. What are your best tips for a good night's snooze?

Two randomly chosen people who post a comment before 11:00 PM (eastern), April 21 will receive a digital copy of Scandal in Spades

Blog Tour Review - - Her Duke at Daybreak

Her Duke at Daybreak
by Wendy LaCapra
Publisher: Pronoun
Release Date: October 17, 2017
Reviewed by PJ

Infamous for his pedigree of madness and murder, the reclusive Duke of Ashbey believes he cannot feel until a mysterious woman unlocks a world of sensation in a single, shattering moment of connection. He casts a desperate bid for more.

Recent widow Alicia Stone has long been reviled as the chief impediment to a love affair that captured the nation’s imagination. Publicly, she settled for respectability’s cold comfort, but, secretly, she longs to experience what she never found with her famous husband—uninhibited passion.

When a devilish duke proposes a discreet three-night assignation, Alicia shocks herself by accepting. But will their explosive union cost them both far more than they bargained?

I've been waiting two years for a new book from Wendy LaCapra. After being captivated by her debut trilogy, I admit both my anticipation and expectations for her new novel, Her Duke at Daybreak were pretty high. The fact that I've already read the book twice, fallen in love with these characters and their story the first go-around then even more deeply the second time clearly illustrates that I shouldn't have worried about having those expectations met.

One of the things I most enjoy about LaCapra's writing is the depth she gives her characters. Ashbey and Alicia  are vividly brought to life as complete, complex characters dealing with a multitude of emotions. These two are like opposite poles of a magnet drawn together. Ash has fully embraced the darkness of his life, feeling neither joy nor despair, simply...not feeling. He shoulders the blame for acts that were not his own,  convinced that he will only bring death and destruction to those unfortunate enough to be close to him. Yet, even knowing that, he cannot bring himself to stay away from the goodness, the light, the sheer rightness that Alicia brings into his life for three days. Their first meeting jolts him into awareness for the first time in years. Suddenly, he's feeling everything but with each encounter, the feelings grow, becoming too wonderful...too much. He yearns to keep her with him always but his past has taught him it will not last and that when it ends, Alicia will be the one to suffer.

The yearning these two have for one another! It was impossible for me not to have a deep emotional response to it and pull for them to find a way out of their predicament and into a loving, lasting relationship with one another.

The pace of this story flows beautifully. The love scenes (and there are many during the three days) are sensual and hot in some places while achingly tender in others but the sex never feels gratuitous. I really liked both Ash and Alicia, though by the time Ash's friends have their "let us tell you how it really is" moment with him I was ready to impart a little knowledge upon him myself...most likely with a good whack upside the head.

I loved watching Alicia blossom into the sensual woman she had always dreamed of becoming but I especially appreciated the woman she already was. I liked her strength, her kindness, her straight-forward approach to life. She easily could have been portrayed as the bitter, abandoned wife with her late husband and his mistress  cast as the villains in this scenario. LaCapra took a different path and it made the story all the better for it.

I'm intrigued with Ash's two childhood friends who have key roles in this book. I'm hoping they will be the heroes of the next two books in the series.

If you enjoy complex, character driven stories with deep emotion, plenty of sizzle, and well-earned happy endings, I highly recommend Her Duke at Daybreak by Wendy LaCapra.

Excerpt #3

He concentrated on the pressure of her lips. Hers was a perfect mouth. Soft. Inviting. Tasting of sweetness, and promise, and light. Her lips traced a path to his chest. There she paused, pressing her ear against his heart.
A small gesture. Artless and honest and painfully poignant. It was all he could do not to clasp her there.
“What do you hear?” he asked.
“Strength.”
He did not deserve this angel. If he’d been a better man, he never would have coaxed her to come. If were a good man now, he would set her free.
“I’m not good,” he said aloud.

“I know.” She rose onto her knees with a sinful smile. “That is precisely why I came.”
