Confession:   I had never read a Krentz novel until RIVER ROAD and let me tell you, there is something very satisfying about sitting down with an unknown writer with 50 NYT bestsellers under her belt.    There’s a guarantee, even before cracking the book open, that she will deliver.

Thirteen years ago Lucy Sheridan was rescued from a dangerous party by Mason Fletcher, the one guy everyone in town said not to mess with—even the sociopathic teenager who tried to drug and rape Lucy at the party.

Now Lucy must return to Summer River because her aunt and her partner have died in a car accident.  But it seems there is more to their deaths than her aunt’s questionable driving.  And what with her aunt’s partner holding some valuable shares in the business of Summer River’s wealthiest family—shares that are now left to Lucy, in addition to the old house—their accident seems a little too convenient what with a giant merger on the horizon.

Also in town is Mason, who needs some time away from his successful security firm after a dangerous case gone awry.   And now Lucy needs his help.   Especially after the sociopathic kid’s body tumbles out of her dead aunt’s fireplace.  Could Lucy be next?   Besides, there is something about her that awakens everything in Mason: his protector instincts, his body, and yes, maybe even his heart.

RIVER ROAD was an entirely pleasing, smooth read.   While I felt the chemistry between the two main characters not as exciting as the suspenseful elements, altogether I would have to recommend this novel as it does what romantic suspense should: entertain and kick up your pulse.
