Review - - Four Friends

Four Friends
By Robyn Carr
Publisher: Harlequin Mira
Release Date: March 25, 2014

For two years, Gerri Gilbert, Andy Jamison, and Sonja Johanson, neighbors in a Mill Valley, California, community, have begun their days with a power walk. Their routine changes suddenly one morning when Andy, fed up with the immaturity and infidelity of her decade-younger second husband, throws him out in an angry, loud, public scene. The timing may be unexpected, but her friends know that Andy’s marriage has been flashing an expiration date since the honeymoon glow dimmed. But when, a bit later, Gerri asks Phil, her husband of almost twenty-five years to move out of their family home, everyone is shocked, including Gerri herself.

The Gilberts appear to be the perfect suburban family. Gerri, a supervisor with Child Protective Services, and Phil, an assistant district attorney, are good at their demanding jobs, skilled at balancing all the responsibilities that come with being the parents of three teenagers, and secure in their marriage. Gerri’s menopausal mood swings may have her family wincing at her bursts of temper, but no one doubts that Gerri and Phil love one another. They are best friends who talk to one another, laugh together, and have one another’s back. All of this is threatened when Gerri discovers that Phil had an affair. It doesn’t matter that the affair is five years past or that Phil sincerely regrets it. What matters is that Gerri can’t forgive him for the betrayal or for making her doubt herself and the relationship that was the bedrock of her life.

Sonya, a feng shui consultant and home organizer who strives for a balanced life through vegetarianism, exercise, and meditation, finds her troubled friends less than receptive to her New-Age remedies, but it is not until her husband George walks out, declaring that he wants a life that includes red meat, alcohol, and freedom from feeling “like a Chia pet,” that Sonja jettisons her herbs and water fountains and sinks into a paralyzing depression. It is BJ Smith, an intensely private newcomer to the neighborhood who has not responded to overtures of friendship, who suspects something is wrong and persuades Gerri to use her key to check on Sonja. BJ’s intuition allows Sonja to get the help she needs and saves her life. Meanwhile, Andy has found the most satisfying relationship of her life, emotionally and sexually, with the contractor remodeling her kitchen, an improbable romantic match for a woman with Andy’s history of involvement with hot, toned, younger men.

These women survive their individual crises, confront truths about themselves that they uncover in the process, and learn that the support and loyalty of real friends help to heal the necessary wounds and to inspire the courage to move in new directions. Carr leaves small-town romance to craft this women’s fiction novel about friendship and marriage, but she maintains her deft touch at creating characters whose credibility and complexity engage her readers.

I first read Robyn Carr’s books in the early 80s, but it was The House on Olive Street (1999), her first women’s fiction title, that put her on my auto-buy list. All of her titles in this genre have had a depth, a warmth, and a reality that made me treasure them. There is no one better than Carr at showing the role female friendships play in helping women move through the crossroads experiences. Four Friends is a welcome addition to Carr’s women’s fiction books. If you are a fan of books about women and their friendships or if, like me, you are a Robyn Carr fan regardless of genre, I recommend this book.

Note: I don’t want to include spoilers, but for readers who are leery of women’s fiction because the books can have endings that provide little resolution, Four Friends ends on an optimistic note.

Spotlight on Barefoot Bay

I was one of many disappointed fans who mourned when Roxanne St. Claire announced she would be moving her writing focus from sizzling romantic suspense to emotional contemporary stories. After three full-length books and three novellas set on St. Claire's fictional barrier island off the west coast of Florida, I'm disappointed no more.  Instead, I've delightfully devoured each of the Barefoot Bay stories and eagerly anticipate each new offering from one of the most talented authors around.  And, for those of you who enjoy that St. Claire sizzle, not to worry.  There's plenty of that to enjoy in these new, heartwarming stories as well.

Bridging the gap between her full-length trilogies, St. Claire has brought three sexy billionaire heroes to Barefoot Bay, telling their stories in novellas (125-145 pages) that will have readers begging for more of the same.  At least, it has this reader begging for more! :)

SECRETS ON THE SAND kicks off the Barefoot Bay Billionaires novella trilogy with a story of second chances.  Though they were classmates in high school, Zeke Nicholas and Mandy Mitchell may as well have lived on separate planets.  Nerdy Zeke didn't stand a chance with his gorgeous and popular high school crush, Mandy.  Ten years later, roles have been reversed.  While Zeke's extraordinary math skills have led him to a successful business career and a billionaire bank account, Mandy's life has taken an opposite turn as evidenced by the fact that she is now the maid tasked with cleaning Zeke's cottage at the exclusive Barefoot Bay resort.  Will a second chance give these two the happy ending they deserve or will a secret from Mandy's unhappy past tear them apart forever?  I was cheering for these two the entire way.  Zeke, especially, is a total sweetheart.  If Mandy didn't take him, I was ready to hop a plane for Barefoot Bay and claim him for myself!

SEDUCTION ON THE SAND brings us the story of billionaire real estate mogul Elliott Becker and Barefoot Bay goat farmer Frankie Cardinale.  When Frankie inherits her grandfather's goat farm on Barefoot Bay, she leaves her high powered job and takes up residence on the secluded piece of land where she spent the happiest days of her childhood.  Everything comes easy to charming Elliott Becker and he has no reason to expect anything different when he shows up on Barefoot Bay to buy a goat farm that's sitting on land he and his partners need for their proposed baseball stadium.  He'll have Frank Cardinale handing over his land in short order.  Except Frank turns out to be Frankie, a sexy Italian spitfire who fires up Elliott in more ways than one.  Elliott has finally met his match but, whoa mama, is she going to make him work for his happy ending - an ending he didn't even know he wanted...or needed.

SCANDAL ON THE SAND:  A member of American "royalty," Nathaniel Ivory has done his best in the past to live up to his notorious reputation but he's making a concerted effort to change.  He's given up the wild parties and one night stands and, along with his billionaire buddies, is concentrating his efforts on bringing a baseball team to Barefoot Bay.  But while Nate is trying his best to turn over a new leaf, scandal just can't help but find him - this time in the form of no-nonsense court clerk, Liza Lemanski.  Liza has been raising the son of her friend since that friend's death in a car accident and wants to adopt him.  She only needs to inform the child's father - Nathaniel Ivory - of the child's existence and get him to sign papers that release him from all parental rights. She's sure "Naughty Nate" will be only too happy to make the "problem" of an illegitimate child go away.  Things don't quite go according to plan.  Nate has grave doubts that the child is his; he doesn't even remember meeting the child's mother.  But then he meets Dylan...and gets to know Liza.  And as he and Liza work together to unravel the mystery of Dylan's mother's story and whether or not Nate actually is the boy's father, for the first time in his life, Nate discovers something he's willing to fight for:  a young boy who needs him and a woman he can't life without.  I do love a bad boy trying to reform and St. Claire has created a great one in Nate.  I loved his interactions with the prickly but determined Liza and was cheering for the two of them the entire way.

All three Barefoot Bay Billionaires novellas are available individually in e-book format and now available in a print boxed set.  The first story, SECRETS ON THE SAND, is currently FREE for download to your Kindle.

Readers, do you enjoy novellas?  Have you read any good ones lately?  Have you read Roxanne St. Claire's books yet?  Have any favorites?

Because I enjoyed these stories so much, I'm giving a Kindle format set of the three novellas to one person leaving a comment on today's post.

Review - - Wildflower Wedding

Wildflower Wedding:  A Cricket Creek Novel
By LuAnn McLane
Publisher: Signet
Release Date: April 1, 2014

Romances set in small towns are all the rage now. It is a trend that I’ve quite enjoyed reading. Luann McLane’s WILDFLOWER WEDDING is no exception. It has all the classic ingredients that make these romances such pleasures to read. It takes place in a small town hit hard by the recession but that is determined to pick itself up, brush itself off and stand tall once again. I live in that kind of town. WILDFLOWER WEDDING’s heroine Gabby Goodwin is determined to make her mark in the town she grew up in by owning her own business. I happen to be a small business owner. Gabby runs a flower shop. My family owns a gourmet food store. Lucky me, I already have my happily ever after. Lucky Gabby, she’s about to get her’s. If she’ll open herself up to it. From the very start, you can’t help but want as much for her.

Enter Reese Marino, the town’s bad boy (and Gabby’s secret crush when they were younger) who went away to live with his Uncle Tony in Brooklyn. (Score another point for me. I love Brooklyn having lived there myself). Reese has returned to town having straightened himself out and become a success in his own right. He and his uncle own the newly opened pizza place. It’s a second chance for both of them. He delivers Gabby’s pizza and she just thinks he’s nothing more than the delivery guy. A hot delivery guy but just the delivery guy; nonetheless.

One of the many things I enjoyed about this book was that it was all about second chances. Gabby’s desire to get a second chance in her hometown at going from being from the wrong side of the tracks to being right on track. Reese coming into her life and getting a second chance at love with her. Recovering from the sting of a painful divorce, Uncle Tony gets a chance at finding love once again. Even Reese’s mom seems to get her second chance, too.

For some, having so many secondary characters in one place removes something from the story.  I would beg to differ. A small town - any small town - is made up of the sum of the people who live and work there. I know that everyone who lives where I do contributes a little something special to the makeup of my town. Cricket Creek is no different. All the characters in this book and everyone else from the other books in this series make it a vibrant, very real, very special place. Just like anyone else’s town they may live in. Just like mine.

Yes, you can cue John Mellencamp if you like.

Still, and all, what I loved most of all about WILDFLOWER WEDDING was how Gabby and Reese opened themselves up to the possibility of love - to the certainty of their own love.  To me, the journey to their happily ever after keys into how deeply their love runs and how as beautiful as a field of wildflowers it can truly be.

I highly recommend going out and getting your copy of WILDFLOWER WEDDING. I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did. I know that I will be looking for the other books in this series, as well. Did you know they have their own baseball team? You know what’s coming, right? My town has our very own baseball team, too!

~Santa

Santa Byrnes has been in love with the written word for as long as she can remember. Romances provide reaffirmation that love is for anyone who opens themselves up to their own happily ever after. Santa lives in the beautiful Hudson Valley in New York along with her marvelous husband and three amazing teens. An aspiring romance writer, she is ever grateful to have found her own happily ever after.

Readers, do you enjoy small-town romances?  Do you like to read about second chances at love?  Do you - or have you - ever lived in one of those small towns where "everybody knows everybody?"  Does your town have its own baseball team?

Today's Special - - The Great Scots Blog Tour

I love Highlander historical romances and those written by Paula Quinn and Sue-Ellen Welfonder are among my favorites.  In The Seduction of Miss Amelia Bell, Quinn introduces us to a new generation of MacGregors and Grants.  I loved the parents' stories and am so excited to now travel the path to happily ever after with their children.   Quinn is off to a wonderful start with Edmund and Amelia's story.  I couldn't put it down! ~PJ

About THE SEDUCTION OF MISS  AMELIA BELL
Edmund MacGregor will do anything to save Scotland from English rule-even kidnap Lady Amelia Bell for ransom. As the daughter of a duke and the chancellor's betrothed, she's the perfect pawn in this game. But from the moment he first lays eyes on his spirited captive, he can't resist stealing a kiss.

Lady Amelia's duty is to marry well, but that hasn't stopped her from fantasizing about true love. So when a sexy Scot appears in her home, she's beguiled. When he kidnaps her, she's furious. Yet as Edmund introduces her to a world of passion beyond her wildest dreams, can she leave her family behind for this handsome Highlander? And will Edmund risk the only true home he's ever known to capture the heart of this lovely lass?

About Paula Quinn
New York Times bestselling author Paula Quinn lives in New York with her three beautiful children, three over-protective chihuahuas, and a loud umbrella cockatoo. She loves to read romance and science fiction and has been writing since she was eleven.  She loves all things medieval, but it is her love for Scotland that pulls at her heartstrings.

I haven't read To Love a Highlander yet (it releases April 29th) but just knowing it's part of a series titled "Scandalous Scots" has me counting down the days.  Welfonder is one of my favorite medieval romance authors and many of her Highlanders count among my favorites.  ~PJ

About TO LOVE A HIGHLANDER
As one of the bastards born to the Stirling court, Sorley the Hawk has never known his mother or father. It's a burning quest he has devoted himself to uncovering at any cost. But as a roguish warrior who serves at the pleasure of the King, his prowess-both on the battlefield and in his bedchamber-is legendary. So when a flame-haired Highland lass sneaks into his quarters with a tantalizing proposition, he can't resist taking her up on her offer .

Lady Mirabelle MacLaren will do anything to keep from marrying her odious suitor, even sully her own good name. And who better to despoil her than his sworn enemy, the one they call "Hawk?" As they set about the enjoyable task of ruining her reputation, Hawk and Mirabelle soon learn that rebellion never tasted so sweet.

About Sue-Ellen Welfonder
Sue-Ellen Welfonder is a Scotophile whose burning wish to make frequent trips to the land of her dreams led her to a twenty-year career with the airlines.

Now a full-time writer, she's quick to admit that she much prefers wielding a pen to pushing tea and coffee. She makes annual visits to Scotland, insisting they are a necessity, as each trip gives her inspiration for new books.

Proud of her own Hebridean ancestry, she belongs to two clan societies: the MacFie Clan Society and the Clan MacAlpine Society. In addition to Scotland, her greatest passions are medieval history, the paranormal, and dogs. She never watches television, loves haggis, and writes at a 450-year-old desk that once stood in a Bavarian castle.

Sue-Ellen is married and currently resides with her husband and Jack Russell terrier in Florida.
