I've been thinking lately about my reading habits and how they change over time. Things like reading locations, time of day, days of the week, or even the type of books I gravitate toward. If you had asked me a few weeks ago, I would probably have said that my reading habits don't vary that much, at least in the short term. After giving it some thought, though, I've realized that they actually do. I've determined that I am, in fact, a seasonal reader.
I'm a multi-genre reader and even within the romance genre, I enjoy a multitude of book types: historical, contemporary, romantic suspense, women's fiction, and more. But in reviewing the books I read over the course of a year, it clearly shows that I lean more heavily toward certain types of books during certain seasons. For instance, now that we're easing into fall I'm particularly partial to any romance with a sports theme, with football heading the list. From mid-October through December, I love to lose myself in holiday romances. January and February, for some reason, see me leaning into women's fiction while the summer months have me scooping up flirty, contemporary romance. Historical romances, on the other hand, seem to suit my mood any time of the year. Maybe that's because they were my gateway into romance reading.
Where I read changes too. The cooler temperatures of fall are perfect for getting lost in a good story while relaxing on my outdoor patio. My favorite summer reading locale is at the complex pool. Spring is usually late afternoons inside (allergies and pollen are a real nuisance) while winter reading is mostly in the evenings, in a cozy chair with a warm blanket tucked around me, muted lighting (I read on my Kindle), and electric candles for ambiance.
