Today's Special - - Debra Webb and Regan Black

You never know who you're going to meet when you say hello. Last October, I introduced myself to the woman sitting next to me in a workshop at the Moonlight and Magnolias conference in Atlanta. Turns out that woman was romantic suspense author Regan Black. I told her I was a book blogger. She told me about the series for Harlequin Intrigue that she's writing with Debra Webb and gave me a copy of the first book in the series, The Hunk Next Door which was due to be released the following month. It was love at first scene. (read my review here) The second book in the series, Heart of a Hero was released earlier this month and continues my love affair with this dynamic collaborative duo's heart-stopping romantic suspense stories. If you haven't read their books yet, I highly encourage you to give them a try.

Debra and I have known each other since I was a newbie at my first writing conference.  I was a huge fan of her novels and gushed like any good fan girl would. She was so inspiring and approachable (and patient) and she gave me amazing advice that weekend. A year later she gave me my first cover quote for my debut novel.

Fast forward almost a decade (notice neither of us has aged a bit!) and dozens of phone calls and we are exploring new adventures as a writing team. Joining forces was Deb’s idea, but it only took me about two seconds to think it over. Come on - the chance to write with my mentor and friend?

People ask us all the time how the co-writing works for us. First, you have to know Deb is an idea factory. She comes up with a scenario and creates a brief outline and then we talk and brainstorm until we have a story concept with characters we both love. And then we talk it out some more.

As we dig into the writing process, phones and text messaging are the lifeline. From the brainstorm to “What did you mean here?” to the final edits, we do it all by phone.

We still laugh about the day I was stuck on a backstory point with a hero and she said, “Oh! Maybe his parents were in the circus. That would give him…” My answer was something along the lines of a profound “Hmm. I’ll think about it.”

And I did. Because as resistant as I was to that particular idea, it was actually workable. It’s our inside joke now, but it’s probably a safe bet that circus parents will show up in one of our books eventually.

Of course there was the flurry of text messages when we realized I had set the story set in one place, and she had a chase and love scene set on the other side of the state. Neither of us had noticed it in the outline. We laughed a long time about the potential sexual tension on that drive.

What makes it work so well for us is our communication and appreciation for each other’s strengths. A good, similar sense of humor doesn’t hurt. Add in mutual trust and you’ve got the keys to our partnership.

The Hunk Next Door (Harlequin Intrigue Nov/2014) was our first release, kicking off The Specialists: Heroes Next Door series. The second story, Heart of a Hero hit the shelves on February 1st. To Honor and To Protect will be out June 1, 2015.

Because we were on a roll, Deb and I launched the Dangerous Protectors romantic suspense trilogy with Against The Wall (Dec/2014) Too Far Gone (Jan/2015) and Nothing To Lose (available Feb 27, 2015).

Of course we continue to work on our individual titles, but with every new story idea Deb and I get more excited to share our books with readers. Co-writing has been a joyful, energizing experience for both of us and I can hardly wait to dive into the adventures our next phone call will create.

Review - - Silver Thaw

Whenever I read a new-to-me author, I always think about my high school literature textbook.   In front of every unit, whether it be the Reformation or the Romantics, there’s always an introduction explaining what was happening in history at that time.  

I think that’s an important thing to consider when delving into a new author.  What’s their writing history?  What style can I expect?   How fair is it to expect shape-shifting vampires from principled beta-heroes?   Setting your tastes for a specific kind of story is the essential task of any reader, to my thinking.    

So I set my tastes for a contemporary romance set in the kind of frigid winter landscape that seems to be dominating the news of late.     

Terribly abused by her husband for years, Amanda Banning has finally found the courage to escape his punches by fleeing, along with her six-year-old daughter, to Mystic Creek, Oregon.    Starting over is difficult enough with the little money Amanda’s earning at the elementary school cafeteria, but the constant fear of being found is what's really whittling Amanda down.   She must guard her every move, even resorting to paying her rent in cash so her ex can't trace her actions.   As such, Amanda’s only outlet is to write down everything--her hopes, problems, and dreams--on little pieces of pink paper and let them go in the wind.     

Jeb Sterling wants to know who's littering on his property.   Annoyed, he collects handfuls of pink papers only to turn one over and read the message on the other side:    "My only weapons are a cast-iron skillet and a butcher knife...I will die before I let him hurt my baby again."   He reads them all only to find himself strangely drawn to the person on the other side of the pen.  He can already sense who she is:  loving, loyal, damaged.   So he figures out where the messages are blowing in from and volunteers to check the citizens of that particular section of Mystic Creek when a terrible winter storm threatens.   At the end of the day, he finds Amanda--guarded and suspicious--living with her shy daughter in a dilapidated rental that has lost its power.  Knowing they may not make it through the night, Jeb insists they stay with him.   And when Amanda's roof collapses the very next day under the heavy snow, Jeb is surprised to find himself convincing her to stay with him indefinitely.  

What ensues is the gentle drama of gaining Amanda's trust while taking care of her in such a way so as not to damage her pride and newly found independence.     

Silver Thaw is written in a manner that allows the reader to tuck right in with it.   It has all the elements: damaged heroine, uber-patient hero, the specter of the heroine’s abusive husband out there (somewhere), and one hell of an ice storm.   My complaint, however, is about chemistry between Amanda and Jeb, but that may stem less from the quality of Anderson’s writing as it does from the story structure at its foundation.    One can't have panting, steaming hot chemistry in a story about an abused heroine.  She'd be a flight risk at the first puffing up of an alpha male.   It just doesn't work.   Not with her emotional state of mind.  At the same time, the plot structure of the book seems to work against itself in that the endless patient coaxing between the h/h becomes a little tedious, particularly in the middle.   But even the title, Silver Thaw, suggests the pacing of the book.  It isn’t called Ice Boom, after all. 

Readers can be sure, however, that the book picks up when the suspense kicks in.  There’s even a subtle twist in the resolution that honors Amanda’s resilience and newfound strength.   And since Anderson’s writing is solid, I can recommend Silver Thaw, especially if you’re in the mood for a good winter read in which love heals the worst wounds.   Set your tastes for it.   And bring a warm blanket.

PJ's Contemporary Romance Round-up

I've been indulging my love of contemporary romance lately with some of the new 2015 releases. Here are my thoughts on four of the books that I've recently enjoyed. ~PJ




Love Me Sweet

With each book she publishes, Tracy Brogan further solidifies her place on my author auto-buy list. Her contemporary romances are filled with humor without sacrificing substance and her fully-formed characters carry the show. This could easily become slapstick comedy without the depth infused into Brogan's characters. Delaney and Grant have both reach a turning point in their lives and while their journey is humorous (frequently laugh out loud funny), it is also meaningful, with growth exhibited in both characters. They are a couple I liked and cheered for throughout the story.

While Delaney and Grant are the primary focus of this book, it wouldn't be nearly as much fun without the quirky cast of supporting characters: from the star-struck male wedding planner who immediately sees through Delaney's disguise to the Paradise Brothers country music band that give Grant and Delaney a ride south on their tour bus when Delaney's VW dives head first into a snow bank to Grant's well-meaning, klepto mother with the slight gambling problem to the step-father who thinks everything can be fixed with a sloe gin fizz. They all contribute to the rich colors that complete the tapestry that is Love Me Sweet.

While Love Me Sweet is the third book in Brogan's Bell Harbor series, you do not have to have read the previous two books in order to enjoy this one. However, if you're like me, as soon as you read one Tracy Brogan book, you'll be scrambling to download her back list as fast as you can. Her books are that much fun!

A Perfect Catch

Tracy and Ike are two people who have been shaped by their life experiences. After living under the thumb of both a controlling father and ex-husband, Tracy is determined to guard her independence at all costs, even if that means turning her back on the feelings she has for Ike Jelinek. As the oldest child, Ike was forced to grow up fast and take responsibility for both his mother and younger brothers when his father took off. He saw the toll working two jobs while raising a family took on his mother and is determined to provide everything his wife needs. What he sees as "being considerate and caring," Tracy views as controlling. While these two have no trouble burning up the sheets, it's going to take a whole lot of compromise and sharing if they have any hope of a permanent happy ending.

I'm really enjoying Sugden's Ice Cats of New Jersey series. Set within the world of professional ice hockey, it's readily apparent that Sugden knows her subject. But while hockey is the backdrop, it doesn't overshadow the characters and their journeys to love. Ike and Tracy have real-world problems to which I could easily relate and to which there are no easy fixes. Sugden gives them the time to work through their differences and reach a realistic, satisfying happy ending. We also have the opportunity to view the progression of relationships begun in the first two books of the series as well as continue the journeys of characters whose stories will be told in future books. I hope there will be many!

Firelight at Mustang Ridge

Danny Traveler was right at home within her daredevil family until a devastating fall changed everything. Her ex-fiancee is now engaged to her cousin and her family doesn't understand why Danny hasn't returned to the fold. She hasn't been able to admit to them just how fundamentally her accident has changed her. Will an opportunity offered by her new friends, the companionship of a rescue dog and the understanding of a sexy cowboy give her the courage she needs to finally heal, put the past behind her and forge a new path in life?

Sam Babcock is a man who also needs to come to terms with past events in his life. Rich and successful thanks to a gem discovery on his property, Sam is a good guy surrounded by loyal friends. If you're looking for a fun time, he's your man but if you have something permanent in mind, you best look elsewhere. Consumed by guilt over what he views as his part in the motorcycle accident that killed his father, Sam has his heart locked up tighter than Fort Knox. Danny may be the only woman with a chance of unlocking it but in order to accomplish that, Sam must face his demons and, most importantly, forgive his father - and himself - before they have a chance.

Two of the many things I admire about Jesse Hayworth's writing are her ability to create a sense of place and to allow the reader access into the thoughts, feelings and fears of her characters. When a lightning storm sweeps through the valley where Danny is camping, I swear I can feel the electricity lifting the hairs on my arms and when she's forced to confront her claustrophobia by taking shelter in the small, dark RV my lungs seize right along with her's. I'm not just reading about her experiences. I'm living them right along with her. Her characters and their situations are realistic and easy to relate to. They have a depth to them and interactions - with people and animals - that generate both humor and emotion. These are people I'd like to know and, through the pages of Jesse Hayworth's books and the magic of her writing, I feel like I do.

Rescue Me

I love second chance stories and I love dogs, especially rescue dogs who finally get that forever family who will love and protect them. Catherine Mann knows the rescue dog journey well as she's volunteered with a rescue for many years and recently opened her own. (follow her on facebook for more info on her rescue efforts) In Rescue Me, Mann has fashioned a story filled with hope, heart and healing that gives our three main characters - Mary Hannah, AJ, and Holly the dog - that precious second chance.

AJ's choice to put his trust and his heart into the hands of the wrong person while working undercover in Atlanta has him second-guessing his career. He jumps at the chance to join his cousin on a small-town Tennessee police force where he thinks he's healing until a meth-house bust and an ultimatum from his captain force him to face the truth. Mary Hannah has steered clear of him since a truck stop hook-up his first night in town when she gave him a false name but now that they're forced to work together maybe he'll have the opportunity to break down a few of her walls.

Mary Hannah has spent the past several years trying to pay penance for the mistake that cost her both her marriage and the life of her unborn baby. A counselor by day, she spends her free time volunteering at the Second Chance Ranch Animal Rescue where she lavishes her love on the animals while feeling she'll never be worthy of accepting it for herself. The desire between Mary Hannah and AJ still sizzles and the more she gets to know him, the better she likes him. Unfortunately, once she learns what caused his crash and burn in Atlanta, she knows they have no chance of a future as she's sure he'll never be able to forgive the secrets of her past.

Holly, a female Boxer, has known nothing but abuse and deprivation within the confines of the filthy meth house where she's spent the first four years of her life. She's never dared to dream of anything beyond the horrors of the hand she's been dealt.

Mann offers insight into this heartwarming and, at times, heartbreaking journey from three viewpoints: AJ, Mary Hannah and Holly. AJ and Mary Hannah are both likable people who have made very human mistakes. Not only do they need forgiveness from each other to move forward but, most importantly, they need to forgive themselves. That's something to which I think all of us can relate. Being human - and thereby stubborn - they'll need the help of Holly to finally open their hearts to one another and to the love they need, want and deserve.

Giving the reader access to Holly's thoughts by humanizing them, thereby allowing us to experience the despair, bewilderment, fear, tentative hope, and determination she experiences on her journey from the meth house through a shelter to the ranch where she works to bring AJ and Mary Hannah together to create a forever family is a poignant, heart-tugging experience that's sure to wring tears from the hardest heart. For this animal lover, it was a multi-tissue experience and what vaulted this book to a must-read keeper.

Review - - Beyond Limits

Beyond Limits

This latest installment in Griffin’s Tracers romantic suspense series shifts focus slightly.  While the Delphi Center, the forensics lab that plays a central role in the series, plays an important role, it’s mostly off-page.  The focus is on the FBI’s attempt to stop a terrorist plot.

The story centers on FBI agent Elizabeth LeBlanc and Navy SEAL Derek Vaughn, supporting characters in a prior book.  The attraction between them then has carried over, and Derek is determined that they’ll act on it before he deploys again.

On Derek’s last mission, he found evidence pointing to a secret terror cell on US soil.  The FBI suspects this cell plans a strike soon, and against a “soft,” or civilian, target.  Initially consulted about his teams findings, Derek muscles his way into the ongoing investigation.  This brings him and Elizabeth together.  As they work to find the terrorists and avert a mass murder, the attraction between them sizzles.

Elizabeth doesn’t deny the heat they share, but she doesn’t want a relationship with someone who’s away most of the time, as Derek is.  She also clashes with him over his methods and his tendency to go off alone without consulting the agents in charge. Yet the attraction becomes harder to resist as they work together and he plays a vital role in uncovering the plot.

Characters familiar from other books in the series appear here, which is a treat for readers who enjoyed their earlier appearances.  The writing flows smoothly, with an intense pace, and the attraction between Derek and Elizabeth adds to the tension in the story.

HITTING THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST

Thirty years ago when I first started writing, my goal was to become a successful author.  I wanted to be able to quit my real estate job and write full time.  Fortunately, with my husband still working, I was able to make that happen fairly quickly.

Still, when I finally I sold my first book after months of trying and numerous rejections, I earned the whopping sum of four thousand dollars--not much money for a year and a half of working ten hours a day!  But I never lost faith.  I thought, “I can do this.  I know I can.” 

I think one of the toughest things about being a writer is continuing to believe in yourself.  Insecurities swamp you.  Is this book any good?  Is this book as good as the last one?  Will my readers like it?  Will the publisher renew my contract?

After thirty years, those questions remain.  It’s only sheer force of will that keeps a writer pounding the keyboard, sheer determination that keeps an author from quitting.

So when I hit the New York Times printed top twenty books (as opposed to the extended list top thirty five, which I had been on a number of times, but isn’t in the paper), it was the kind of validation that keeps a writer going.

Someone must like these books, I thought.  Oh my God, it’s really selling!  It was a thrill to get that phone call--a notification that usually comes late on a Wednesday night.  I got the call early Thursday morning when my agent phoned and said, “AGAINST THE FIRE made the bestseller list!  You’re on the New York Times!”

It’s a real moment for an author, the thrill of a lifetime.  My heart is in these books, the newest Against books, The Brodies of Alaska, AGAINST THE WILD, AGAINST THE SKY (out Jan 27, 2015), AGAINST THE TIDE (out May 27, 2015).  Not only do I love the brothers, Dylan, Nick, and Rafe, but I loved the ladies who snare these hunky men. 

In my current release, AGAINST THE SKY, Nick Brodie, a former Anchorage PD homicide detective, has a serious case of burnout.  He's tired of murder and mayhem.  He wants a new life, something that doesn't include blood and death.  Unfortunately for Nick, he isn't going to get it.  When twelve-year-old Jimmy Evans comes to him beaten and battered, claiming his father was murdered, Nick has no choice but to help him.

To make matters worse, he has a lady friend visiting from Las Vegas.  Samantha Hollis, owner of the Perfect Pup pet grooming parlor, isn't cut out for the harsh living in Alaska.  Unwillingly swept into Jimmy's problems, she finds herself on a wild ride with Nick that leads them both into passion and terrible danger. 

I’m hoping readers who've been enjoying the Brodies of Alaska will be wanting more of the hunky brothers and their sexy ladies.  If you haven’t read AGAINST THE WILD, I hope you’ll look for it.  And don’t forget to watch for Nick and Samantha in AGAINST THE SKY, and Rafe Brodie in AGAINST THE TIDE.
