Today's Special -- An Interview with Alexandra Hawkins

It is my pleasure to welcome Alexandra Hawkins back to the hot seat! Alexandra is the USA Today bestselling author of the sexy Lords of Vice series for St. Martin’s Press and also writes under the name Barbara Pierce. You can check out her website for more information on her books and her other nom de plume. Plus, you can check out my review of her latest book, Twilight with the Infamous Earl, here! Alexandra was gracious enough to answer my nosy questions, so without further ado…

Thanks for joining us today, Alexandra! Congratulations on your latest release, Twilight with the Infamous Earl—out TODAY! Can you share a little bit about this story with our readers?

Thanks for inviting me to drop by today!  Twilight with the Infamous Earl focuses on everyone’s favorite Lord of Vice—Frost—and he is troubled.  For the first time in his life, Frost realizes that cannot count on his friends.  He and the other Lords of Vice cannot even agree on how to handle some problems that have developed at Nox.  As a result, there’s been some discussion of shutting the club down.  Frost is vehemently opposed to this decision, and feels marriage has softened his friends.  It is at this low point that Emily Cavell enters his life.

Because Twilight with the Infamous Earl is the last book in a seven-book series, readers have had to wait for Frost’s story. Did you know from the beginning what the plot of his story would be?

I had developed a bare bones outline of his story when I pitched the entire series to my editor.  I didn’t sit down and fill in the details until I had finished book three.

Very interesting! As you know, I loved this story but am sad to see the series end! How easy or difficult was it to plan and write a seven-book series? And as its writer and creator, was it sad to say good-bye?

Yes, it was bittersweet finishing the draft for Frost’s book.  These wonderful men and their ladies have been part of my life for five years.  I’m thrilled that I was given the opportunity to write the entire series, and I’m content to let the series end on a high note.  Even so, I’m going to miss the Lords of Vice.

Is planning a new series difficult?  Since I’ve been working on developing a new one—Yes!  It’s exciting, too.  It takes time to research and world build.  I’m a plotter so I like to have many of the details worked out in advance before I sit down to write the proposal.

I’m so glad you were able to finish the series, too. J I love bad boys and Frost is definitely a bad boy. I really enjoyed the banter between him and Emily. What is it about her that finally brings Frost around to consider the almighty M-word (marriage)?

In the beginning of the book, Frost is feeling disconnected from his friends.  All of them had married and started families, and he just didn’t see himself playing an active role in their lives.  Although it was convenient to blame them, his feelings had nothing to do with his friends, but they were a sign of his growing discontentment with his life.  Meeting Emily changed the status quo.  She challenged and infuriated him.  She seemed immune to his charm, and it bemused him that a smile and a kind word from her meant more to him than seducing a dozen women.  When he finally falls in love, he holds nothing back.  He wants to bind her to him in all ways—and that includes marriage.

Perfectly said!

Thanks to my son, I have become somewhat of a history buff in recent years (though mostly U.S. History) and have found much of it absolutely fascinating. What kind of research did you have to do for the Lords of Vice series? What was the most interesting fact you found?

After sixteen books, I try to find something unique to research for each book so I’m always learning new about the Regency period.  Sometimes, it’s something really mundane like wallpaper, silver, and door knobs, or I might spend my time researching a specific building like the British Museum or a locale like Gretna Green.  I love going off on research tangents, but it’s not very helpful when I’m on deadline.

LOL! If you could go back in time to when the Lords of Vice roamed London, what one item would you insist on taking with you?

Just one?  Okay, I’ll go with the first thing that popped in my head.  A good toothbrush.

That is a great choice. I would probably pick the same thing!

Previously published under
her Barbara Pierce name
You recently revealed that you previously wrote books under the name Barbara Pierce. Why did you change names? How hard was it to keep your new identity secret for so long?

I changed my name at my publisher’s request.  At the time, I had written nine books and while my books had won awards and garnered great reviews, I had yet to hit the bestseller lists.  My publisher thought repackaging my “brand” would help, and he was right.  Many of my Lords of Vice books hit the USA Today bestseller list.

Was it difficult keeping my identity a secret?  At times.  I continued to receive email from my Barbara Pierce fans so I felt guilty that I couldn’t go into any detail about my current “project”.  On the other side, I had Alexandra Hawkins fans who wanted to know if I had written other books.  So it’s been cathartic to finally share my secret with everyone.

What’s up next for you?

Now that I’ve finished the Lords of Vice books, I’m up for contract.  I’ve been putting together a proposal for a new series and I hope to be working on book one soon.

I can’t wait!!! Thank you so much for your time, Alexandra! Is there anything you’d like to ask our readers?

I loved your question about the one item I’d bring, so let’s ask readers—If you could go back in time to Regency London, what item would you insist on taking with you?

Oh, I can’t wait to hear what others would take with them! TWO lucky commenters who answer the question will win their pick of one of the Lords of Vice books by Alexandra Hawkins! The contest is open to all!

Review -- Twilight with the Infamous Earl

Twilight with the Infamous Earl
Lords of Vice—Book 7
By Alexandra Hawkins
Publisher: St. Martin’s
Release Date: November 26, 2013

From the moment I started reading All Night with a Rogue by Alexandra Hawkins, I was hooked on this addictive series featuring seven decadent heroes who surrender to love one by one. As the series progressed, I enjoyed watching them fall and have been eagerly anticipating the story of icy, bad boy Frost. Twilight with the Infamous Earl is his story.

Vincent Bishop, Lord Chillingsworth, or Frost to his friends, is the last unmarried owner of one of London’s most exclusive gambling hells, Nox. Frost is well-known for being a hard-hearted, wicked rake and doesn’t hide it. When young Emily Cavell launches a verbal rebellion against a few establishments of ill repute, Nox especially, Frost doesn’t take too kindly to it—especially because people are actually listening to her. He sets out to determine why.

Emily has her reasons for her condemnation of Nox—its proprietor, Frost, ruined her sister years ago and she wants revenge. When she first meets Lord Chillingsworth, he helps her out in a tough situation. She later learns that Lord Chillingsworth is Frost and, naturally, has trouble equating the man who helped her with the terrible scoundrel she has heard about. As Emily gets to know the man inside, she finds it increasingly difficult to continue her retribution and begins falling for the very last man she ever expected to fall in love with.

I really enjoyed Twilight with the Infamous Earl. Fans of the series know how sarcastic and acrimonious Frost can be and that the only woman to hold his heart is his sister—and she ended up marrying one of his fellow Lords of Vice. At the beginning of this book, we see just how alienated Frost feels after his friends found love in the previous books:

As the children sobbed, and the adults tried to calm them, Frost watched, realizing that he was the one who did not fit the quaint family gathering. Somewhere along the way, his friends had moved on without him when they had married and started their families.

He was part of their lives, but no longer one of them.

I just wanted to hug him after I read that part! It makes the meeting of (and falling for) his perfect match all the sweeter. Frost needed someone who could stand up to him and with him. Emily is a strong young woman with a soft heart that isn’t afraid to go toe-to-toe with him. I loved this scene where Frost and Emily are discussing Nox:

“Come now, Emily,” he said silkily. “You must have a notion about what takes place in such an establishment. After all, rumor has it that if you had your way you would rid London of all its corruption and vices.”

She grew still at his revelation. People had been gossiping about her? The notion was absurd. “Who told you that?”

“It isn’t important,” he said dismissively. “What concerns me is your interest in Nox. While your little moral crusade amuses me, it is also very dangerous.”

“Are you threatening me, Lord Cilllingsworth?” she asked in hushed tones. A small part of her was hopeful that he was, since it would settle her internal debate about his character.

“And confirm your worst suspicions about me or Nox?” He grunted. “Hardly. No, little innocent, Nox is nothing to concern yourself with.”

“What about you?”

“Oh, you should worry about me, Emily.”

Twilight with the Infamous Earl is a fine conclusion to the Lords of Vice series. It is bittersweet because we finally get Frost’s story, but it also marks the end. Thankfully, we get to check in with the previous couples and see how their lives are going and it was like visiting old friends. Ms. Hawkins leaves the door open a crack and I hope that perhaps one day we will get to see the sexy Lords of Vice again. I would love to see them as secondary characters! For now, I will just have to be content with visiting them when I reread each of their wonderful stories.

Spotlight on Alexandra Hawkins!

Two classic novels by Barbara Pierce, now writing as Alexandra Hawkins - released as e-books for the first time!

The No Good, Irresistible Viscount Tipton
By Alexandra Hawkins
ISBN-13: 9781466820975
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Publication date: 11/1/2013

How can a man who is no good be oh, so right?
Fifteen years ago, a strange twist of fate made Rayne Wyman both the Viscount Tipton and a notorious outcast. Now a practicing surgeon, even Rayne’s own vow of revenge has not tempted him to reenter the polite world—and he is certain that nothing and no one ever will. Then he meets the young and remarkably lovely Devona Bedegrayne, who summons the temerity to knock on his door and demand his help.

Intrigued by her innocence, exasperated by her determination, Rayne never imagines the danger Devona faces—or the irresistible desire she will awaken—when he becomes her accomplice in a bit of very scandalous mischief. . .

Here's an excerpt:

“Miss Bedegrayne, how do you know His Lordship will be this way?” Pearl whispered, close on Devona’s heels. She was determined not to be left behind.

“A simple deduction, really.” Devona tried a door, and peered within. Empty. She moved on to the next door. “This side of the house is lit up. Besides, the gargoyle went the other way.”

“Maybe the man went off to get his lord?” Pearl asked, growing more nervous with each step.

“Highly doubtful. He was about to throw a woman in pain out on the streets. We’ll be lucky if he actually went off to get a chamber pot. Ah-ha!” Devona froze when she noticed the shadow and light under this next door flicker. Anticipation bubbled in her blood. After all, it was not every day a lady introduced herself to a supposed demon.

“Gar,” she said, pitching her voice so the sound did not go beyond their small group, “you and Pearl return to the hall and await its guardian. Distract him if you must, for I will need time to speak with His Lordship.”

Devona watched the dance of light and shadows as it escaped from underneath the door. She had not explained to Gar and Pearl her reasons for seeking an audience with Lord Tipton, nor the dire outcome if she failed to secure his help. He would help her, would he not? She had never thought until this moment that she would fail. Sensing their concern, she glanced at her motionless companions. “All will be well, once I speak to Lord Tipton. Go ahead; I shall be fine.”

Without thought to the consequences, she quietly opened the door and blinked. What she saw within did not meet with her expectations. Why, the room was empty and . . . quite normal. It was not a large room, but it definitely was a male’s domain. The walls were a plain pea green; the only adornments were several landscapes depicting the changing seasons of country landscapes and a huge ornate gold-foiled mirror that was suspended over a chimneypiece of cream-colored marble. A welcoming fire beckoned her to enjoy its warmth. No dainty, fashionable furniture was displayed to impress the visitor. Everything from the old French upholstered rococo armchair, the oversized Hepplewhite library cases spanning the length of two walls, and on to the geometrically precise library table serviced its owner with efficiency and comfort.

Who was this Lord Tipton? She had gleaned every bit of gossip bandied about the ton, and none of it added up if this elegant, private sanctuary reflected the man she had been desperately trying to meet. Her lower lip pouted a bit as she turned this latest intriguing tidbit in her mind. So lost in thought was Devona that she failed to notice that she was being assessed as well.

A prickling awareness jarred her from her musings. Rubbing her arms to ward off an imaginary chill, she pivoted. Her gaze scanned the room again. There, in one of the shadowed corners, her gaze sought out, then faltered when she realized she was not alone. The mysterious Lord Tipton. This was the man the ton snidely called behind his back Le Cadavre Raffiné. The Refined Corpse. She doubted any of the fashionable would have repeated such an insult to the man’s face, if he had ever bothered to show himself.

She could tell even in the dim light that he was magnificent. Too fascinated to be wary, she took the branch of candles closest to her and brought the light to this man of shadows. He sat sprawled out in a corner chair, one leg propped up on a nearby chair while the other was bent close to his chest. His left arm rested casually across the surface of his knee. He held a smooth, flat stone between his fingers, which he slowly stroked with his thumb. Her attention caught the movement, and she stared at his long, elegant fingers. He had large hands. A long scar ran from his wrist to his thumb. He possessed the hands of a warrior, a man who had battled for everything he claimed, and won. The gentle stroking of the stone seemed contradictory and disturbed her on some level she could not define.

Lord Tipton cleared his throat. If it was her attention he wanted, he gained it. Her focus shifted to the thick column of his throat, then up to his face. What masculine beauty! It was a proud face, all chiseled angles that begged exploring. A day’s growth of beard peppered his jaw, and drew attention to his full, sensual lips. His hair, a blend of chestnut and honey, was unbound, and tangled over his shoulders. There was a distinct streak of blond or perhaps it was white that sprouted from his right temple. Someone had told her it was the mark of le compagnon du diable, the devil’s companion.

Wariness stiffened her stance as she realized the man was half-dressed. He wore a linen shirt, its only adornment four linen buttons to connect the front opening. His breeches were well made and suede. His shoes were missing! She could feel the heat in her face as she stared at his feet sheathed in silk stockings. She had never seen her brothers without shoes or coats.

Each studied the other; a unique male-to-female alertness had electrified the space separating them. Neither had said a word, and yet Devona felt threatened. She gazed into eyes almost the color of pewter, and she almost could believe the rumors about him.

“For a housebreaker, you aren’t a very efficient one,” Rayne said, finally deciding it was time to end the staring contest with his bold intruder.

The Scandalously Bad Mr. Milroy
By Alexandra Hawkins

Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Publication date: 11/1/2013

Sometimes a scandalously bad man can be oh, so good . . .

Meet Wynne Bedegrayne—destined for spinsterhood. Her beauty and charm mean nothing when her intelligence frightens off every suitor, and even her charitable work with the Benevolent Sisterhood leads her into scrapes no sensible man would condone. Then Wynne finds herself the object of Keanan Milroy’s dedicated courtship. The celebrated pugilist may be lowborn, but his character is above reproach…and the passion he awakens within her is irresistible.

But when Wynne learns that Keanan’s seduction may be motivated by something less pure than desire, she resolves to teach him a lesson. If nobility is a matter of behavior rather than blood, then she’ll risk everything to teach Keanan that he is a gentleman at heart. And that nothing is more honorable than love…

Here's an excerpt:

“Come, my dear Miss Bedegrayne.” He offered his arm. “I have a new friend who desires an introduction.”

Bemused, Wynne allowed the marquess to escort her across the room. Because he was a year younger than her, she considered herself quite safe from his favor. A man in his position would clearly require a young woman not quite so on the shelf as she was at three and twenty.

“Sir, a moment, if you please.”

It took all the polished skills of deportment she had learned at Miss Rann’s school not to gape openly. Seeing him again brought back the mortification she felt about that awful day near the canal.

Unaware of Wynne’s mounting horror and the fighter’s comprehending scrutiny, the Marquess of Lothbury made his introductions.

“Mr. Milroy, a pleasure,” she said; the words were false and he knew it.

#

Keanan credited her for handling what was an apparent shock. The tremor in her extended hand might have gone unnoticed if he had not been examining her reaction to him so attentively.

“Miss Bedegrayne.” To prove to them both that he could be chivalrous, he accepted her hand and bowed. “Rumors of your beauty reach beyond this ballroom. When Lothbury revealed your presence, I insisted on an introduction.”

The bland conversation seemed to steady her. The wariness had not left the cool, intriguing depths of her green eyes, but her bearing had lost that restless movement, signaling the need to bolt.

“You are most gracious, sir.” She took a deep breath; a nonverbal decision flashed in her expressive eyes. Swift determination set her jaw. Her chin lifted a notch. “Pardon my boldness, but I must ask. You seem familiar to me, Mr. Milroy. Have we met?”

Her daring, aggressive approach was most unexpected. For a lady who had secrets and a reputation to protect, she risked much in challenging him so publicly. His admiration grew toward her, even though he could not resist poking at her composure.

“Miss Bedegrayne, I can assure you, I would not forget such a meeting.” He intentionally held her gaze, wanting her to understand his warning.

Despite the orchestra playing just outside the doors in the gardens, and dozens of conversations continuing around them, he heard her small, startled gasp. She muffled the sound by nipping her lower lip with her teeth.

The action drew his gaze. The woman had incredible lips. They were neither thin nor too full. She had left them unpainted. However, their natural hue did not require artifice. Like morning dew on a raspberry, there was a sheen outlining her half-formed pout. A hunger rose within him that he had never thought possible. He fought against the demanding urge to claim her tempting mouth, wondering if she tasted as sweet as any summer berry.

“Miss Bedegrayne,” Lothbury interjected, breaking her gaze away from Keanan’s magnetic spell. “Mr. Milroy is relatively new to society. I doubt you would have encountered him unless you share an appreciation for pugilism.” He gave her a considering glance. “Perhaps one of your brothers?”

She was more than willing to give the marquess her complete attention. “My lord, both of my brothers are out of the country, and my father cares little for the sport. You are correct,” she conceded, looking at Keanan. “I can think of no situation in which we would have met.”

So she intended to deny the encounter. He saw no advantage to revealing her lie, so he smiled, letting her know he had teeth and could use them at any time of his choosing.

Review -- All Afternoon with a Scandalous Marquess

All Afternoon with a Scandalous Marquess
Lords of Vice—Book 5
By Alexandra Hawkins
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Release Date: July 31, 2012

As one of London’s infamous Lords of Vice, Simon Jefferes, Marquess of Sainthill, has never had a problem with women. He often keeps a mistress, but never for too long. One evening, he spies the proprietress of the newest high-class brothel, the Golden Pearl. The mysterious Madame Venna intrigues him with her sexy voice and masked face. Saint tries to coax her into his bed, but she eludes him. Naturally, Saint wants what he can’t have. After much persistence, he is finally granted a single glorious night with her...only to be promptly dismissed by her bodyguards the next morning. This, of course, doesn’t sit well with Saint. He asks to speak with her and is denied repeatedly. He is angry and hurt as he is completely infatuated with the courtesan. Because of this incident, he avoids the Golden Pearl and Madame Venna for awhile, but never forgets their one night together. Years later, Saint comes to Madame Venna to ask for her help and all the old feelings resurface.

Catherine Deverall, known to most as Madame Venna, must keep her true identity a secret in order to protect herself. Years ago, she fled an abusive situation and came to London seeking shelter. She found it in the form of Mrs. Sweete, a brothel madam who took Catherine under her wing and taught her how to survive. Catherine is the bastard daughter of an earl and a married lady. After her birth, she was sold to a couple whose son later took advantage of Catherine. Now she lives two separate lives—that of the fancy, elaborate Madame Venna and also the quiet, reserved Catherine. Trouble starts when Saint encounters both her personas causing it to become difficult for Catherine to keep them separate. When several people from her past show up, Saint vows to do whatever it takes to protect her.

All Afternoon with a Scandalous Marquess is a solid addition to the Lords of Vice series by Alexandra Hawkins. This one isn’t my favorite of the series, but that may be because I’m not a big fan of the “secret identity” theme in books, especially when it goes on a little too long for my taste. And I know that certain themes that may not be one person’s cup of tea, others will love. J Having said that, I did adore Saint and Catherine. They were engaging characters and I especially enjoyed the scenes between them when Catherine was able to be herself, sans mask. Those parts were sweet and charming and allowed each of them and the reader to get to know their true nature. I felt for Catherine and all she had been through and was happy to see her get a happy ending with a man who loves her.

I love this series and its decadent heroes and am very much looking forward to the last two books in the series. Next up is Hunter, who has been betrothed since he was a boy, and then it’s the enigmatic Frost’s turn. I can’t wait to find out what kind of woman Ms. Hawkins pens to melt his black heart! Until then, fans of the series will enjoy this offering, especially if you fancy the “secret identity” premise.

Review -- Sunrise with a Notorious Lord

Sunrise with a Notorious Lord
Lords of Vice—Book 4
By Alexandra Hawkins
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Release Date: January 3, 2012

Christopher Courtland, Earl of Vanewright—known around London as “Vane”—is the very picture of a rich, handsome ladies’ man. Why shackle himself to just one lady when he’s free to sample them all? In spite of his own mother’s attempts at matchmaking, Vane has sworn to stay single. Until he has a chance run-in with Miss Isabel Thorne...

A modest and refined beauty, Isabel is a lot more brazen than she appears. When a pickpocket tries to make away with Vane’s bejeweled snuffbox, Isabel attempts to thwart his escape...and manages to steal Vane’s heart. But the harder he tries to seduce the sharp-tongued, strong-willed Isabel, the more she resists. Now it’s up to this tried-and-true bachelor to find a new way to play the game...or risk losing the one woman who’s ever captured his heart.

*********************************************************

Despite his mother’s many matchmaking attempts, Christopher Courtland, Earl of Vanewright, has remained blissfully unscathed thus far. Luckily for her, he adores her immensely. Unluckily for him, his close friends enjoy teasing him about it.

“You are being ridiculous.”

It annoyed Vane that his friend was not taking him seriously. “Am I? Last month, my mother told Lady Sankey that she would happily pay any willing miss a King’s ransom if she was clever enough to trick me into marriage.”

“And who told you this?”

“Lady Sankey, when I discovered her disrobing in my bedchamber.” His hand tightened on Sin’s shoulder, when the marquess surrendered all sense of decorum and started laughing. “God’s teeth, Sin! Lady Sankey cannot be a day under sixty! Can you not fathom what my mother has done? Although she denies it, my mother has placed a veritable bounty on my head. If this gets out, every female from the lowest scullery maid to your grandmother will be dreaming of ways to compromise me into marriage.”

Sin sobered, and urged Van to continue walking since they were drawing attention. “Fortunately for you, my grandmother has long since departed this world. However, you might want to avoid my sister this season.”

Vane is the “reluctant heir” and I really felt for him in his relationship with his father. Vane has tried so hard to be the son his father wants, but has never been able to live up to the legacy his brother left. I believe that made him appreciate his mother that much more. Who can resist a man who loves his mother?

Isabel and her sister, Delia, have to come to London at the confidential invitation of the Marchioness of Netherley. The marchioness is hoping to make a match for her son, the Earl of Vanewright, with Delia. What Isabel doesn’t count on is falling for the earl herself.

Sunrise with a Notorious Lord is the fourth book in Alexandra Hawkins’s Lords of Vice series featuring seven sinfully delicious men of the ton. This book isn’t my favorite of the ones published thus far—there were a couple times when I wanted to strangle Isabel, though I did appreciate the lengths she went to for her sister—but it is a great addition to the series. I really love the way Ms. Hawkins depicts the camaraderie between the male friends. They are like a typical group of guys who never let an opportunity to rib one another pass by, but are also completely loyal to the end. There is never a dull moment when the Lords of Vice get together! Even though Sunrise with a Notorious Lord is part of a series, it stands completely on its own, as do the others in the series. I recommend them all!

~Andrea

So, I mentioned that the Lords of Vice are a great group of guys who tease each other, but will defend each other to the end. What other series can you recommend that center around a group of guys that behave in this manner?

Review -- After Dark with a Scoundrel

After Dark with a Scoundrel
Lords of Vice -- Book 3
By Alexandra Hawkins
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Release Date: February 1, 2011

As the younger sister of one of the infamous Lords of Vice, Lady Regan Bishop is no stranger to her brother, Frost, and his friends’ wicked ways. After all, she was practically raised by them following her father’s death and her mother’s desertion. After an amateur science experiment goes awry, Regan is whisked away to safety by one of her brother’s friends, Lord Hugh Mordare, whom Regan has always felt more than brotherly affection for. They get caught up in the moment and share a kiss . . . which is intruded upon by Frost and a distant cousin, Lady Karmack. The lady has been hounding Frost to send Regan to boarding school for months and this incident becomes the perfect catalyst to sway his mind to her suggestion. So, off to boarding school a very unhappy Regan goes. Five years later, Regan returns to London with the full intent of pursuing that kiss and more with Dare.

Dare has never forgotten that kiss with Regan and the feeling of wanting to do it again is intensified when he first spies her at the theater after five long years away. The attraction is still there, but Dare is hesitant to act upon it because she is his friend’s sister and he already has enough problems to deal with in his own family. He and his brother Charles, the future duke, have never gotten along and have come to blows many times—especially since years ago, Charles stole and married the only lady Dare has ever loved. But can he open his heart and take a chance on love again with the beautiful and very desirable Lady Regan?

I absolutely adore storylines where the heroine is in love with her brother’s best friend and After Dark with a Scoundrel is now one of my favorites! The intensity between Regan and Dare sizzles on the pages and as much as Dare tries to keep away from her, he just can’t help himself. She is his weakness and his attempt at doing the right thing makes for some delicious tension. And oh, how I love sexual tension in my books.

“Enough!” He gestured at the door. “You should retire to your bedchamber,” he said hoarsely.

Dare turned away, attempting to shield Regan from his lust that was so blatantly defined under his trousers. Even with her unconventional upbringing with Frost as her guardian, Regan could not possibly understand what Dare wanted from her. That knowledge gave him strength to let her leave the room.

Regan did not move. “I would rather continue kissing you,” she said shyly.

Without glancing at her, Dare groaned and scrubbed his face with his hand. He had always known that he would succumb to some form of madness if he laid a hand on Regan.

“And I would prefer not to,” he lied. “Go to bed.”

“No.”

Dare glanced up at her refusal. He had not thought it possible, but Regan was even lovelier with her blue eyes glittering with anger and her red lips slightly swollen from his kisses.

“I am not a child, Dare,” Regan said, planting her fists into her hips as she swaggered toward him. “Nor are you my brother.”

These two had amazing chemistry together and it was so strong that I felt it, too. I really connected with them and Dare absolutely stole my heart! One thing I enjoy most about Alexandra Hawkins’s writing is how well she grasps the male point of view and how often she uses it—which is great since the series revolves around the seven Lords of Vice. After Dark with a Scoundrel is my favorite of the series so far and I can’t wait to see which Lord of Vice will succumb to the pitfalls of marriage in Ms. Hawkins’ next book. My vote is for Vane, but we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, pick up After Dark with a Scoundrel and lose yourself in this wonderful story!

Today's Special -- An Interview With Alexandra Hawkins

Historical romance author Alexandra Hawkins burst on the scene in February of this year with her sizzling debut from St. Martin’s Press, All Night With a Rogue. The book launched her Lords of Vice series featuring sexy, decadent heroes who find love with strong, beautiful women. The second book in the series, Till Dawn With the Devil, released last Tuesday, August 3rd. Check out Andrea’s review here! Alexandra was gracious enough to agree to an interview, so without further ado, please welcome Alexandra Hawkins to The Romance Dish!

Thank you so much for joining us today, Alexandra!

My pleasure, Andrea!

Congratulations on your newest book, Till Dawn With the Devil, hitting the shelves! Can you tell us a little bit about the story?

In TILL DAWN WITH THE DEVIL, readers will learn that Reign’s notoriety began with his young wife’s accidental death. Years later, he is still being quietly shunned by London’s polite society because many believe he murdered his wife, and Reign has done nothing to quell the gossips. After a disastrous marriage, Reign is unwilling to tie himself to another woman, and his wicked reputation has its advantages. That is, until he glimpses a young woman with pretty blue bows on her dress. When he gives in to his curiosity and crosses the ballroom to find her, Reign is unaware that he is pursuing a lady that is connected to his family’s scandalous past.

Sigh. I loved that he was drawn to her and her pretty blue bows. :) As you can tell from my review, I adore characters with physical flaws such as Sophia’s impaired vision. Was her character difficult for you to write?

At times. The cobwebs and shadows that obscured Sophia’s vision could shift so the severity of her impairment varied throughout the book. Sophia was too independent to allow this to slow her down so I had to constantly remind myself to focus on her other senses.

Here at The Romance Dish, we love to dish about heroes...and your Lords of Vice are incredibly sexy heroes. How did you come up with the concept for this series?

The original concept for the story started out with a Seven Deadly Sins theme. However, around the time I was working on the proposal, I had read that Kathryn Caskie was coming out with a Seven Deadly Sins series. Since mine was still a work-in-progress, I dumped the cardinal sins but kept the seven rogues.

I'm so glad you decided to keep those seven rogues. *wink* And speaking of said rogues, the Lords of Vice have terrific nicknames (which I love!) to suit each of their personalities. Did you come up with their nicknames or their full names first?

Great question! I actually came up with the nicknames first.

You have been really blessed with the gorgeous covers for this series. Did you have any input in them?

My input is very limited. For every book, I turn in character descriptions, and the art department takes it from there.

Can you tell us what a typical writing day is like for you?

I try to work around the kids’ schedules so my writing day can vary. During the school year, I’m up at 6:30 am. While the kids are getting dressed, I catch up on email and promotional tasks. I usually settle down to write by 8:30 am and I’ll work until 12:30 pm. Sometimes I use my afternoons for research, but it depends on how much progress that I’ve made that morning. The kids are home by 4:00 pm so I turn off the laptop for a few hours to take care of homework, dinner, and working out. If I’m closing in on a deadline, I also write in the evening. It’s my favorite time to write so if I’m in the “zone” I’ll work all night.

You certainly have your priorities in order! What is your very favorite part about being a writer?

Working barefoot. My feet are allergic to high heels.

LOL! I love that! And I can so relate as I hate wearing heels, too. :)

Everyone has those special auto-buy authors whose books they never miss. Who are some of your favorite authors to read?

My auto-buys are Linda Howard, Jennifer Crusie, Jayne Ann Krentz, Gaelen Foley, Anne Stuart, and Lorraine Heath.

Those are some terrific authors!

‘Friends to lovers’ and ‘enemies to lovers’ are two of my favorite themes in a romance novel. What are some of your favorite themes to read about and why?

Beauty and the beast and revenge tales are two of my favorite themes. I’ve been drawn to both themes since I was a teenager. These stories tend to be stark, full of angst and tortured characters. By the end of the book, the hero and heroine have truly earned their happily ever after.

Ooooh, I love a good revenge tale, too. We know that writing is a big part of your life, but what sort of activities/hobbies do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?

Not surprisingly—I’m a voracious reader. When I have a free moment, I usually have a book within reach. I also love to cook. I find it soothing, and it’s just another way to express my creativity. I have three teenagers so I spend a lot of time with them playing video games and watching movies.

It was such a pleasure to meet you in person at this year’s RWA conference in Orlando! Did you have a good time? What are some of your favorite memories from the conference?

Oh, it was great to finally meet you in person, too! I had a fantastic time at the conference, but there never seems to be enough time to do everything that I’ve circled on the workshop schedule. As for favorite memories, I thoroughly enjoyed the keynote speeches. Getting some face-to-face time with my editor is always something that I look forward to each year, too. However, the best part of the conference was meeting readers. I was really touched by everyone’s enthusiasm for the Lords of Vice series.

I'm with you about not having enough time to do everything. This first timer was certainly overwhelmed! LOL!

Can you share with us what is coming up next for you on the writing front?

Once I finished the edits for AFTER DARK WITH A SCOUNDREL, I’ll go back to working on the synopses for the remaining Lords of Vice books. I should have more details about the next books in the coming months.

Oh, good! I can't wait! *g*
