Coastal Magic Featured Author & Giveaway - - Seressia Glass

Welcome back for this month's Coastal Magic Convention 2024 Featured Author Post. In the spotlight today is Featured Author Seressia Glass. Seressia is known for a variety of writing genres as shown below in her bio. I'm currently reading her new (12/12/23) romcom, GAME ON. Only 28% in and I'm already hooked. Let me tell you, straight up, you do not have to be a gamer (I am so not) to enjoy this book! Scroll below for more information about Seressia, her books, an excerpt from GAME ON, and a giveaway.

Seressia Glass is an award-winning author of more than twenty-five contemporary and paranormal romance and urban fantasy stories. Her paranormal series, (Shadowchasers, Sons of Anubis) are steeped in Egyptian mythology. Her most recent release is THE LOVE CON, a story about a plus-sized nerd in a cosplaying reality show competition. She lives south of Atlanta with her guitar-wielding husband, gamer son, and two attack poodles. When not writing, she’s at her day job as an instructional designer or watching K-dramas.

Seressia has always been a voracious reader and turned to writing at an early age, using her fantastical tales for extra credit in school. Her proudest writing moment remains winning the first Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday “Living the Dream” essay contest as a high school senior and getting to meet Coretta Scott King and read her essay to the King family. Since then, she’s gone on to write a motley crew of characters and creatures including witches, werewolves, djinn, demons, Egyptian deities and jackal shapeshifters with a few humans thrown into the mix. No matter who or what she’s writing about, Seressia weaves in the universal themes of acceptance and being comfortable in one’s own skin.

GAME ON
by Seressia Glass
Publisher: Berkley
Release Date: December 12, 2023

Samara Reynolds has built a large following as a gamer under an anonymous screen name, and uses her skills as a DEIA consultant to advocate for equal representation in video games. When she posted a video critiquing the popular game Legendsfall, she knew she’d get a reaction from her fans, but the video leads to hundreds of female gamers critiquing the game and its company, Artemis Games. The only thing more unexpected than starting an online movement is getting a job offer from the handsome CEO of Artemis.

Aron Galanis has been on a mission to get his company certified to create gaming content for people with disabilities. When he sees Artemis trending online for all the wrong reasons, he’s determined to right his wrongs and offers the originator a mea culpa, as well as a job offer to overhaul the character options in Legendsfall.

Working together turns Aron and Samara from adversaries into allies, allies into friends, and after that—something more. But once their relationship goes public, will Aron and Samara be able to weather the storm and fight for their happy ending, or is it game over?

EXCERPT

“Hey, Aron.”

He looked up from the documents he’d spread across the coffee table. “Yes?

Samara grabbed a file folder, then rose. She opened it to read as she walked toward him. “Did you see this report on five-year pro—ah!”

Time slowed. He watched in horror as Samara tripped, then pitched forward, her head on a crash course with the table. Fear rose like bile in his throat as he sprang to his feet to break her fall. He managed to grab her, but her forward momentum sent him falling back. They landed on the couch, bumped foreheads, then lips.

Just a couple of seconds of their lips touching, but it seemed like more as she stared at him in undeniable shock. Then she scrambled backward and shot to her feet, rubbing at her forehead.

He stood too. “Are you okay?”

She put her left hand on her hip while still massaging her forehead with her right. “Other than falling into a rom-com situation, I’m fine.”

What? He scrunched his eyebrows in bewilderment. “A rom-com situation? Is this something that happens often?”

“In a romantic comedy, yes. In real life, no.”

His bewilderment deepened. “So that was supposed to be romantic?”

She dropped her hand. “No . . . well, I did discover that your eyes are even more gorgeous nose to nose, and your lips are damnably soft and kissable.”

“Kissable?” He touched a finger to his mouth, still feeling Samara’s lips against his. Her body against his. “Do you consider that a kiss?”

“Yes, albeit an accidental one, not a good one.”

“I think I’ve just been insulted.” He took a step closer to her with a smile. “I think I need to correct that.”

She sucked in a breath, then spoke, her voice as soft as night. “Correct what?”

“That bad kiss. I can’t leave you with that memory. I need to give you a better one. Is that reckless of me?”

She gazed at him, silently considering. He stared back just as long, longer, an eternity of waiting. Finally, she spoke. “Can it really be called reckless if it’s something we’ve both wanted to do since that night with the dinosaurs?”

She—did she—did he hear her right? He had to make sure. “Can I kiss you right now?”

Her eyes softened. “How about we kiss each other?”

Somehow, he managed to answer her. “I would like that very much.”

Instead of moving forward, she drew her hands up to frame his face. Her thumb brushed beneath his eye, a soft caress that burned him to his core. “I can finally touch you like this.”

“Touch me all you want.” Okay, maybe not all she wanted. He didn’t need to pop off like a firecracker with a short fuse. “Just remember to kiss me.”

“Oh, trust and believe, I won’t forget that.”

The low, husky laugh made his body tighten in ways that had to be obvious to her. Yet she continued to stroke his cheeks as if oblivious as she held his gaze. “I’m sure you’ve had lots of ladies tell you how beautiful your eyes are.”

Maybe, but in that moment he couldn’t recall a single one. “I don’t remember,” he confessed, bringing his hands up to mirror her gesture. “But you can bet that I’ll definitely remember this.”

He stared at her for a long moment, just drinking in the reality of having her with him like this. She’d talked about his eyes, but hers were deep pools of onyx with sparks of amber shooting through. He wanted to dive in headfirst and knew if he did, he’d never want to come back out.

“So much hidden here,” he whispered, grazing his thumbs beneath her eyes. He raised his head, closing the distance between them until their mouths met, meshed. She hadn’t reapplied her lipstick after dinner, and her lips were soft and full and wonderful against his. It was a sweet, exploring kiss that made his muscles tremble with the need to clutch her closer.

She drew back, dark eyes hazy. “Mm-hmm, pizza and cider and kisses. I need more of alla that.”

They came together again, and this time, oh, this time it was game on. He turned, putting her beneath him, so that he could kiss her with all the bottled-up need he possessed. Her hands slid up his shoulders to clasp together around his neck, her mouth hungry against his.

It took a superhuman effort to pull away from her, but he managed. Barely. “I should . . . probably go home now.”

She pushed her hair back, blowing out a breath. “You are home.”

“Oh yeah.” He looked around. “I forgot.”

“So did I.” She touched a fingertip to her lips with a soft smile that produced a shadow of her dimple. “But I do need to go. It’s way later than I thought, and we both have work to do in the morning.”

“I want to date you.”

Review - - The Love Con

The Love Con
by Seressia Glass
Publisher: Berkley
Release Date: December 14, 2021

He’s cosplaying as her boyfriend but their feelings for each other are real in this romantic comedy from Seressia Glass.

Sometimes Kenya Davenport believes she was switched at the hospital—how else could a lover of anime, gaming, and cosplay come from STEM parents? Still, Kenya dreams of being able to turn her creative hobby into a career. She finally has a chance to make it big when she joins the reality show competition Cosplay or No Way.

There's just one catch: the challenge for the final round is all about iconic pairs, and the judges want the contestants' significant others to participate. Unfortunately, Kenya is as single as can be at the moment. Luckily her best friend, Cameron Lassiter, agrees to be her fake boyfriend for the show.

Roleplaying a couple in love will force them to explore what they're hiding under the mask of friendship. Can Kenya and Cam fake it until she makes it, or will she be real about her feelings, knowing it could cost her the best friend she’s ever had?

Nancy says:

The Love Con is a brilliant melding of romance, geekdom, and reality TV with a touching friends-to-lovers romance at its core. Kenya is attracted to Cameron but says nothing lest she ruin their friendship. He’s attracted to her but says nothing because the one time he tried, years before, she shot him down.

Since then, the timing hasn’t been right even though they’ve shared an apartment for years. They’ve also worked together at Cam’s fabrication shop, Make It Worx, where Kenya is a silent partner. Now, though, neither is dating anyone, they’re thrown together for the cosplay contest (think Project Runway for geeks), and they’re pretending they actually are in the relationship they both secretly yearn for.

The cosplay contest is the external plot, but the romance dominates the story. The romantic arc has complications, of course. Kenya’s parents disapprove of her cosplay interests, which Cam has always shared. They believe she should get a real job, meaning one in her field, engineering, and outgrow this childish cosplay stuff.

On top of that, one of the three contest judge seems to have it in for Kenya, always emphasizing the downsides of what she does and implying criticism of her weight. As you can tell from the cover, Kenya is a plus-size heroine (who also loves pink). Kenya deals with this woman’s borderline-snide comments by emphasizing her work on the project. She knows any show of temper will have her branded the Angry Black Woman. Her awareness of this potential trap permeates her reactions to the judge and to the equally critical producer who leads the camera crew following Kenya as she prepares for the final round.

Glass handles Kenya’s reactions in a way that makes me aware of the problem and sympathetic to Kenya but without letting Kenya’s concern over the stereotype dominate the story, or even the conflict.

The developing romance interweaves emotion and very hot sexual tension with tenderness and trust as Kenya and Cam take the first tentative steps toward making their pretend relationship real. When Cam’s ex tries to make trouble, the camera crew gets it all on film, and the things she says make Kenya question whether what she and Cam believe they feel is genuine. A subsequent conversation with her parents makes her doubt worse.

Kenya’s parents are my only quibble with the book. She agrees to give up cosplay and get an engineering job if she doesn’t win the contest. I have a little trouble with a self-supporting adult making a bargain like that, but parental disapproval, the desire to prove oneself, can be a powerful motivator. The parents’ attitude about comic books and all things related was common when I was growing up, so I can see how someone really devoted to those interests could feel pushed into a corner.

As a lifelong geek, I recognize many of the references to comics and science fiction in the book. Readers who aren’t familiar with those references, however, will know what they relate to, and that’s more important than the particulars. I especially like the reference Anubis, which reminds me of Glass’s use of Egyptian mythology in her wonderful Shadowchasers urban fantasy trilogy.

The story moves at a good pace, with interesting details on cosplay costume creation sprinkled through it. The supporting cast are well drawn, especially Kenya’s friend Janelle and the two guys who work at Make It Worx, Mack and Javier. One judge is petty and mean, but the other two are fair-minded and positive. Even Kenya’s parents, unsympathetic as they are to her goals, are clearly doing what they think best out of concern for both Kenya and Cameron.

The Love Con melds a clever concept with engaging, sympathetic characters, sexual tension, and a nicely twisty plot.

Highly recommended ~ 4.5 stars

Today's Special - - Spotlight & Giveaway: Christmas at Caynham Castle

I'm excited to welcome the authors of the upcoming holiday anthology, Christmas at Caynham Castle, to the blog today. Please give them all a warm welcome!

Christmas at Caynham Castle

Hi, everyone!  I’m Nancy Northcott, and my friends and I are excited to share our forthcoming holiday anthology, Christmas at Caynham Castle, with you. I have a weakness for Christmas collections. At busy times, I like having something I can read that’s shorter than a novel, and I love stories set during the holiday season. I wasn’t surprised to discover my co-authors felt the same way. So the seven of us got together and devised various Christmas celebrations at an imaginary castle.

Jeanne Adams and I created Caynham Castle, which is inspired by Ludlow Castle in Shropshire (England).  Unlike Ludlow, which is a well-preserved ruin, Caynham Castle is a hotel, bustling with life and brimming with holiday spirit. Once we had the castle layout and basics, the entire group then added details of the castle and the nearby town, Caynham-on-Ledwyche.

I had a great time reading what everyone came up with for Christmas at Caynham Castle. We hope you’ll enjoy that too!

Here’s a bit about the stories:

Her Heart in His Pocket ~ Donna MacMeanshttps://www.donnamacmeans.com

About a year ago, I asked my readers what secondary character they’d like to see featured in a Christmas novella and they chose Ben from Redeeming the Rogue.  I love the resulting novella and I hope you do as well. A surprise reunion of a pickpocket turned lady’s maid and a mysterious unexpected footman occurs just in time for the Christmas Frost Ball at Caynham Castle. The past of each could jeopardize the future of the other, and the future of Caynham Castle itself.

A Perfect Grey Christmas ~ Anna Sugdenhttps://www.annasugden.com

Readers often ask me about Ryan Grey, a former NJ Ice Cat who runs Grey’s Steakhouse, and who appears in several of my books. Christmas at Caynham Castle gave me the opportunity to explore Ryan’s story. Since concussion issues forced Ryan to give up hockey, and his dream of winning the Stanley Cup, it seemed important to give him his chance at glory – hence having him compete for the ultimate prize in cooking. Only one woman would do for Ryan’s heroine – Lydia, his former business partner and the woman he once loved, who left him to marry an English lord. Things are about to get hot in the kitchen!

The Ghost of Christmas Past ~Jeanne Adamshttps://www.jeanneadams.com

In The Ghost of Christmas Past, Dr. Denby “Bee” Alden, is a bee expert and one of the witches from my Witches of Haven Harbor series. She’s come to Caynham Castle at Christmas to research ancient beekeeping techniques…and to escape. The ex-boyfriend who dumped her is getting married and she wants to be far away when that happens. While there, she meets the Earl of Caynham. A castle ghost helps them both find something to celebrate! I hope you enjoy Bee and Ward’s story!

Christmas Crossroads ~ Caren Cranehttps://www.carencrane.com

My story is about a young woman from my fictional town of Cross Springs, NC, who was orphaned young and has not found a place to call “home” until she lands in Caynham-on-Ledwyche and meets a local man who is reconnecting with his hometown.

Still ~ Seressia Glasshttp://seressiaglass.com

Still is set in my Shadowchasers universe. Morgan Lafayette is a Light Witch who got injured while astral traveling. She teams up with fellow traveler Arthur Davies and Shadowchaser Kira Solomon to defeat the creature that hurt her and finds love and a new friend in the process.

Crewel Fate ~ Gail Z. Martin ~https://ascendantkingdoms.com

Crewel Fate was inspired by the many embroidery samples I’ve seen when touring historic homes. When Teag Logan and his fiancé Anthony Benton travel to England to celebrate their engagement, Teag’s magic and supernatural experience hone in on restless ghosts, an old scandal and century-old secrets that could turn deadly. Can Teag and Anthony solve the mystery and settle the ghosts before the Ball, or will more people join the ranks of the castle ghosts? Crewel Fate is part of my Deadly Curiosities urban fantasy series, and falls immediately after the newest novel, Inheritance.

The Last Favor ~ Nancy Northcotthttps://www.nancynorthcott.com

The Last Favor, part of my Arachnid Files spy series, was inspired by my experiences and those of friends in dealing with loss at the holidays. Grayson (Gray) Kane, the hero, comes to Caynham Castle to pick up an award for his late father. Dealing with his loss amid the families celebrating the holiday makes him question his solitary life as an covert agent. His partner, Laurel Whitney, joins him to protect Gray from an assassin. As the long-suppressed attraction between them flares anew and a killer closes in, she must decide whether she has the courage to seize what she has always wanted.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Many thanks to all of the authors for visiting with us today and sharing a bit about their contributions to Christmas at Caynham Castle. This anthology is definitely going on my holiday reading list!
Christmas at Caynham Castle will be available November 20 through most ebook vendors. Jeanne Adams and Nancy Northcott return on December 4 to share the process of creating the castle.
