This Earl is on Fire
Season's Original #2
By: Vivienne Lorret
Releasing August 2nd, 2016
Avon Impulse

The sheltered daughter of a country baron, Miss Adeline Pimm comes to London looking for adventure… and finds it in the form of a bloody, unconscious man slumped in the doorway of her family's rented townhouse. Though his identity is a mystery, Adeline is inexplicably drawn to the handsome, injured man and vows to nurse him back to health.

Liam Cavanaugh, the scandalous Earl of Wolford, is startled when he awakens in an unfamiliar bed, wrapped in bandages that hinder his eyesight, with no memory of why he was beaten half to death. Although he can't see the witty young woman who tends to his wounds, her alluring voice--and a single stolen kiss from her soft lips--help soothe his pain. But when he is fully healed, Liam is not ready to let go of the one woman who stirs his deepest longings.

Liam will do whatever it takes to see Adeline again, even if it means giving up his rakish ways. But his disreputable past is not so easily forgotten and his secrets are far more dangerous than he-or Adeline-ever imagined.

Excerpt #1

Liam Cavanaugh grinned at the corrugated lines marking his cousin’s lifted brows. It wasn’t often that Northcliff Bromley, the Duke of Vale and renowned genius, showed astonishment.
Bending his dark head, Vale peered closer at the marble heads within the crates. “Remarkable. Even seeing them side by side, I hardly notice a difference. The fellows will be fascinated when you present this to the Royal Society at month’s end.”
“It was pure luck that I had the original as well.” Liam shrugged as if he’d merely stumbled upon the differences between a genuine article and an imposter.
Vale turned, and his obsidian eyes sharpened on Liam. “No need to play the simpleton with me. You forget that I know your secret.”
Liam cast a hasty glance around the sconce-lit, cluttered ballroom of Wolford House, ensuring they were alone. Fortunately, the vast space was empty aside from the two of them and a dozen or more large crates filled with artifacts. “By definition, a secret is that of which we do not speak. So lower your voice, if you please.”
No one needed to know that he actually studied each piece of his collection in detail—enough that he’d learned how to spot a forgery in an instant.
“Afraid the servants will tell the ton your collection isn’t merely a frivolous venture? Or that your housekeeper’s complaints of dusty urns and statues crowding each room would suddenly fall silent?” Vale flashed a smile that bracketed his mouth with deep creases.
Liam pretended to consider his answer, pursing his lips. “It would be cruel of me to render Mrs. Brasher mute when she finds such enjoyment in haranguing me.”
“She may have a point,” Vale said, skirting in between two crates when a wayward nail snagged his coat, issuing a sharp rip of rending fabric. He stopped to examine the hole and shook his head. “Your collection has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few months. So much so that you were forced to purchase another property to house it all.”
“The curse of immense wealth and boredom, I’m afraid.”
His cousin’s quick glower revealed that he was not amused by Liam’s insouciant guise. Then, as if to punish him for it, he issued the foulest epithet known to man. “You should marry.”
Not wanting to reveal the discomfort slowly clawing up his spine, Liam chuckled. “As a cure for boredom?”
Vale said nothing. He merely crossed his arms over his chest and waited.
It was a standoff now. They were nearly equal in regard to observation skills, but apparently Vale thought he had the upper hand.
Liam knew differently. He crossed his arms as well and smirked.
If anyone were to peer into the room at this moment, they might wonder if they were staring at matching wax figures. The two of them looked enough alike in build and coloring to be brothers, but with subtle differences. Vale’s features were blunter, while Liam’s were angular. And Vale’s dark eyes were full of intellect, while Liam’s green eyes tended to reveal the streak of mischief within.
“Marriage would do you good,” Vale said.
Liam disagreed. “You’re starting to sound like Thayne, always hinting of ways to improve my social standing.”
The Marquess of Thayne was determined to reform Liam into the ton’s favorite pet—the Season’s Original. In fact, Thayne had been so confident in success that he’d wagered on the outcome. What a fool.
“I never hint,” Vale said.
Liam offered his cousin a nod. “True. You are a forthright, scientific gentleman, and I appreciate that about you. Therefore, I will give you the courtesy of answering in kind: No. I should not marry. I like my life just as it is.” He lifted his hands in a gesture to encompass his collection within this room. “Besides, I could never respect a woman who would have me.”
Vale scoffed. “Respect?”
“Very well. I could never trust a woman who desired to marry me. Not with my reputation. Such a woman would either be mad or conniving, and I want neither for a wife.”
He’d nearly succumbed once, falling for the worst of all deceptions. After that narrow escape, he’d vowed never to be tricked again.
“Come now. There are many who care nothing for your reputation.”
That statement only served to cement his belief. If his despoiled reputation were the only thing keeping him far afield of the ton’s conniving matchmakers, then he would make the most of it. And the perfect place to add the crème de la crème to his list of scandalous exploits would be at Lady Forester’s masquerade tonight.
After all, he had a carefully crafted reputation of unrepentant debauchery to uphold.
Liam squared his shoulders and walked with his cousin to the door. “If the Fates have it in mind to see me married before I turn sixty, then they will have to knock me over the head and drag me to the altar.”

Excerpt #2
The moment Adeline Pimm saw the body slumped against the doorway, she knew that London was a city full of adventure. Oh . . . and, of course, danger.
A series of indrawn breaths followed.
Father’s gasp was more of a wordless exclamation as the man beneath the narrow portico of their rented townhouse tipped over the threshold and crumbled into his arms. Mother’s accompanied a jolt of her limbs, an ever-preparedness to manage any given situation. While Adeline’s stalled in her throat. Tiny grains of gooseflesh rose on her arms. Her skin tingled. And some strange force clutched her heart.
Her own response made little sense to her. After having been shielded from . . . well . . . everything for her entire life, a more understandable reaction might have been to faint, perhaps. Yet instead, she felt compelled to rush across the foyer to offer aid.
Her body answered this urge. Automatically she took a step forward. Unfortunately, so did her mother, effectively blocking her path.
Hildebrand Pimm—Bunny to all those who knew her—clapped a hand over her daughter’s eyes. “Adeline, hasten to your room. This sight is too troubling for your eyes.”
Not just any young woman’s eyes, Adeline noted, but hers and hers alone.
Excerpt 3:
“Your swelling has diminished completely,” she said, feeling a strange fluttering in the pit of her stomach. Then she gripped the key tightly as if it were her life’s purpose. “Your flesh is somewhat bruised, however, and purplish in places. When you arrived, we weren’t even able to see that you had eyes.”
“And now that you are able?” There was an edge of mockery to his tone and—yes—to his lips too. Now there were appealing fissures on both sides of his mouth.
“Are you seeking a compliment? I had not taken you for a vain peacock,” she chided, feeling comfortable enough to tease him in return. Yet, that quickly altered when he reached up and closed his hand over hers.
He tugged her closer. “Your expression reveals little. And there are no mirrors nearby to show me whether I am merely bruised or disfigured. That pretty blush upon your cheeks could be because you are here in your nightdress and shy about it, not necessarily because you think I am handsome.”
Were all the gentlemen in London this bold? She held her breath, trying not to move and wanting to absorb every sensation caused by her hand in his grasp. Her skin rejoiced, sending shivers of warmth through her like sparks from flint and steel. His thumb swept back and forth over the mound of her thumb. Then his fingers curled casually as if touches such as these were commonplace. At least, for him...
“I like the look of you,” she confessed, holding his gaze. A man who’d suffered such a beating deserved that, at least.

Excerpt 4:
“However, perhaps if my pillow were fluffed.”
She looked at him as if he were teasing her, but played along nonetheless, chafing her hands together. “I must have an innate talent for pillow fluffing.”
If one could possess a talent for such a thing, she certainly did not. Not that he would tell her. Because if he did, he already knew the result. She would leave his side, and he would lose the relief—or whatever this was—he found in her presence. And he had never been one to deny himself necessary comforts.
Then, as she had done before, she leaned over him. Her hands went to either side of his face, pressing into the pillow, the inviting plumpness of her breasts resting on his chest. Enjoying the moment, he closed his eyes and drew in a deep breath that hinted at pear blossoms.
She went still. “Why are your hands at my waist?”
Were they? He squeezed his hands and found that, yes, they most definitely were. He also discovered that the satin gown was warm from the heat of her body and fine enough that there was little barrier between his hands and the slender curve of her waist and the slight flare of her hips.
“I’m merely aiding in your efforts by offering stability,” he said, by way of an excuse. Of course, he hadn’t intended to touch her—gentleman’s daughter and all that. Given his pleasure-seeking nature, however, he wasn’t entirely surprised by his wayward hands. Perhaps he should think about removing them before he found them cupped around her breasts. Inadvertently, of course.
“Afraid that I will crush you?” she said with a laugh against his lips. “Well, do not worry, because I have finished. Your pillow is sufficiently plump.”
More than. And lumpy as well, but he did not mind in the least. Especially when he felt her lips against his cheek.
“Thank you, Wolford. I had a delightful evening.”
In the next instant, he didn’t know what came over him. Suddenly, he found his hand at her nape, pulling her mouth to his.

Review - - The Woman in the Photo

The Woman in the Photo
By Mary Hogan
Publisher: William Morrow/HarperCollins
Release Date: June 14, 2016

Lee Parker discovers a new detail about her birth family on her 18th birthday and seeks out to solve the mystery of who the ancestor is in the picture with Clara Barton, founder of the Red Cross. Her research leads her from her home in California to Johnstown, infamous for its epic disaster in 1889, when the man-made lake, where the rich people summer, burst and flooded the town below.

The book flips back and forth from the past to the present until the two worlds finally meet in the middle. The chapters that take place in the past focus on the woman in the photo, Lee’s ancestor, Elizabeth Haberlin, one of the rich elite who is on the verge of making her bow in society, who finds herself drawn to a handsome Englishman, James Tottinger, who has come with his family to hang out with the American elites who summer at the lake, and a local townsboy, Eugene Eggar.

When Elizabeth realizes the lake they summer on is about to burst and flood the town below, she risks her life to warn them before the dam breaks.

This story was extremely compelling—I wanted to keep reading no matter how late it was or what I actually should have been doing. It’s riveting in an action-and-suspense kind of way, a subtle thriller, that even though you know how the story ends for Johnstown, you want to know what happens next for the woman in the photo. Its historical detail, vivid characters, and short fast-paced chapters that flip from the past to the present have a charming parallel.

This story is a lot like Titanic with its Romeo & Juliet kind of love triangle issues and epic disaster of will they live or die finale, but the story tells more after the disaster as well in one of my favorite scenes in the book, where Elizabeth finds her purpose in life, working with the Red Cross to help the survivors and rebuild…and thrive. Seriously, I recommend it for that scene alone because its just so touching and sweet and shows how much Elizabeth has changed since the beginning of the novel. Well worth the read.

Review - - Barefoot at Moonrise

Barefoot at Moonrise
By Roxanne St. Claire
Publisher: South Street Publishing
Release Date: August 1, 2016

When I was a teen, I was sure that people over the age of forty couldn't possibly be having sex. Now that I'm a woman of *cough cough* years, with forty a distant image in life's rear view mirror, I know that love and romance are possible at any age. I not only know it, I want to read about it and, thanks to Roxanne St. Claire's Barefoot Bay Timeless trilogy, I can.

Fire Captain, Ken Cavanaugh and successful businesswoman, Beth Endicott have a painful history, with a short-lived high school relationship that ended badly. Though his feelings about what happened haven't changed, it wasn't Beth's fault and Ken knows he owes her a long-overdue apology for words said in anger and grief. Serving on their 25th high school reunion planning committee should give him the opportunity to do so but when he finally runs her to ground in a beach cabana under a beautiful moonlit sky, the desire that flowed between them in their teens explodes in a passion that can't be denied. Sunrise brings the knowledge that their chemistry is as combustible as ever but the accident that tore them apart twenty-five years ago still stands between them and the possibility of a second chance.

After growing up under her rich and influential father's thumb, Beth has worked hard to carve out a life of independence as an adult. She views the passion she shares with Ken as the one-night stand it clearly is - at least in her mind - though Ken would like a chance to see where a relationship might take them. An unexpected surprise has him working a home renovation with her and throws all of her carefully-made plans into chaos. The more time they spend together, the more tempted she is to consider a permanent relationship but how can she trust her heart to a man who still blames her father for his father's tragic death?

As with all her books, St. Claire infuses Barefoot at Moonrise with an ample amount of heart, heat, and humor. The main couples in the Timeless books are older - late 30s to early 50s - and with age, comes more wisdom and depth of character. In Ken's and Beth's case, it also brings more baggage from past history to overcome. Their journey to a happy ending is, by turns, endearing, frustrating, poignant, sizzling, and perhaps most important, forgiving. I enjoyed each twist, turn, laugh, and sigh along the way.

I liked both Ken and Beth and cheered for their happy ending. I also enjoyed the family dynamics at play in this journey, especially Beth's evolving relationships with multiple members of her blended family. Ken's firefighting family was a fun addition and I wouldn't mind seeing more of them in future books. I wasn't sure how St. Claire was going to eliminate the obstacle between Ken and Beth and their happy ending but she did so in a believable and satisfying manner with a few surprises along the way.

I highly recommend both Barefoot at Moonrise and Barefoot at Sunset (6/1/16) and can hardly wait for Barefoot at Midnight, due out in October. I have the feeling that one, with bad boy Lawson Monroe as hero, is going to be a wild ride!

Review - - Exposed

Exposed
Edgars Family Novels - Book 5
By Suzanne Ferrell
Publisher: Suzanne Ferrell Productions
Release Date: June 14, 2016

Fashion photographer Sydney Peele is on her way out of town on assignment when her globe-trotting-photographer brother shows up at her home asking to stay for a few days. Reluctantly agreeing, she hopes he doesn't leave it trashed like last time. Ian is not the most considerate of people but with both of their parents gone, he's the only family she has left. Flying home from her assignment, she grabs a cab at the airport and races straight to her friends' wedding, which she has agreed to photograph. The first person she runs into - literally - is a big, gorgeous man who apparently never learned how to smile. And while she's immediately attracted to him, it's clear he wants nothing to do with her...even if his eyes do follow her everywhere during the wedding and reception to follow.

U.S. Deputy Marshal Frank Castello doesn't want to be attracted to the cute, sassy photographer at his friends' wedding. Frank doesn't like photographers, doesn't respect them, and certainly doesn't trust them, but while he wants to give her the cold shoulder, there's something about Sydney Peele that has him intrigued. He offers to give her a ride home so his friends can get their tired kids tucked into bed...because that's the kind of good guy Frank is. When they arrive, Sydney's street is blocked by fire trucks and her home is in flames. And then it explodes...

Frank is a natural protector and, as a U.S. Marshal overseeing people in witness protection, has the skill set and resources to keep people safe. Everything about the situation at Sydney's home has his "spidey sense" tingling and when Sydney, in an obvious state of shock, whispers "Oh, Ian, what have you done?" Frank goes into action and sweeps her off to his highly secured home to keep her safe until he can figure out what's going on. He has no idea that one tiny, sassy, spitfire and the situation she's about to find herself in the middle of will turn his life upside down, his heart inside out, and put both of them in the crosshairs of an international assassin.

I always enjoy Suzanne Ferrell's romantic suspense novels. Full of heart, action, and tightly-crafted suspense, they never fail to engage my interest and hold it from beginning to end. Exposed is no exception. Frank and Sydney are terrific together. I love how big, gruff, and tough Frank takes care of Sydney following the fire - tucking her in and cooking her breakfast the next morning - and how she disrupts his borderline OCD life. I admire Sydney's ability to not dwell on what she's lost but dig deep to find the courage and strength to meet a difficult situation head-on. And the Edgars family. What can I say about them? If I ever found myself in trouble, they're certainly the people I'd want on my side. It would be hard for Frank or Sydney to ever find a better family-of-the-heart.

The rich supporting cast - both good and bad - add an extra dimension that brings the story, with all its twists and turns, to vivid life. Because of their pasts, Sydney and Frank are both independent people. They've learned to stand on their own which makes watching them learn to lean on one another and allow themselves to be vulnerable to each other, so satisfying. Their love story is sexy and heartwarming and amplified by their fight to stay alive while solving the mystery surrounding Sydney and, hopefully, bringing the villains to justice.

As a fan of the Edgars Family novels, I've been waiting for Frank to meet his match. Sydney - and their journey - are all I could have hoped for. If Exposed is your introduction to this family, don't fret. It works well on its own and you won't feel like you've missed anything by not having read the other books first. However, after seeing other family members in action in this book, there's a good chance you'll be so intrigued by them that you'll immediately buy all the other Edgars Family books to read their stories too!

Today's Special - - Katie Ruggle

It's my pleasure to welcome Katie Ruggle to the blog today. Katie is a new, and exciting, voice in the world of Romantic Suspense. I've been devouring her Search and Rescue books as fast as they're released and can't wait for more!

When she's not writing, Katie rides horses, shoots guns, and travels to warm places where she can scuba dive. A graduate of the police academy, Katie received her ice-rescue certification and can attest that the reservoirs in the Colorado mountains really are that cold. While she still misses her off-grid, solar-and-wind-powered house in the Rocky Mountains, she now lives in Rochester, Minnesota, near her family.

Connect with Katie: KatieRuggle.com  Facebook  Twitter

Welcome, Katie!  Your Search and Rescue series is one of my favorite new romantic suspense series. What was your inspiration for these books?

Thank you! I didn’t have to look far for inspiration for the Search
and Rescue series; my life provided plenty of ideas. After all, I was living in the middle of the Colorado Rockies when I wrote these books. The wind howling outside made it easy to write about the cold and snowy setting. Also, while in cop school, I worked for a police department. My favorite part of the job was collecting and analyzing evidence from crime scenes (I admit to being a total forensics nerd). While doing volunteer work for a fire department, I received my cold-water rescue certification. Even when the idea for the Search and Rescue series was just a tiny mental seed, I knew that I wanted to feature first responders. I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for cops, firefighters, search and rescue members, EMTs—all those who risks their lives to make someone’s really bad day a little bit better.

All these pieces of my life (plus a dead body) came together to become the Search and Rescue series.

As noted in your bio above, you lived off the grid during your years in the Rocky Mountains. What was the most challenging part of that experience? What was the most rewarding?

The most challenging part of living where I did (translation: middle of a very snowy nowhere where powerlines did not reach) was learning that cabin fever is a real thing. After about ten days of being snowed in, when the county plow finally (finally!) made it through the drifts covering the nearby road, I had to restrain myself from chasing the plow truck down so I could talk to the driver (a real, live person!). I’m pretty independent and can handle lots of alone time, but, after a while, talking to the dogs just didn’t cut it.

The most rewarding part of my off-grid experience was knowing that I was truly self-sufficient (well, except for propane for the back-up generator) as far as my power needs went. I was getting energy from the sun and wind—how awesome is that? I also loved that my dinged-up, thirteen-year-old pickup with a non-matching topper was the nicest, newest truck in the neighborhood. It’s all relative, I guess.

The twist at the end of Gone Too Deep had me screaming, “OMG! WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!?!?” How long will we have to wait for the next book? Will that book wrap up the series?

Heh. Yeah, that was fun to write. Don’t worry, though—In Safe Hands, the fourth and final book in the Search and Rescue series, will be out in just two months (October 4, 2016).

There's now a big red circle around October 4th on my calendar. *grin*

I have a sweet rescue dog who “helps” me write reviews. Do you have any pets who give you moral support while writing?

Hmm…I’m not sure about moral support, although my three dogs do offer plenty of opportunities to procrastinate (they want to go out; they want to come in; they’re hungry; they’re bored; the mailman’s here; OMG!OMG!OMG!! IT’S A BUNNY!!!!). I call my place the island of misfit dogs, since I have two Australian Shepherds who have no interest in herding (one took off after a butterfly in the middle of a herding lesson like the poster child for canine ADD) and a Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix who was supposed to be my livestock guardian and watch over my chickens. When she heard the coyotes yipping in the distance, however, she’d run inside and hide under the bed.

They’re cute, though.

I want to meet your dogs! I think they'd get along great with my 80-pound Rottweiler mix who thinks she's a lap dog and is terrified of the six-pound chihuahua that lives upstairs. We also have OMG!OMG!OMG! IT'S A BUNNY!!!! moments here. Many of them.

What’s next? Will there be more books in 2017?

I’m hard at work on the Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit series. There are women on the run, hot cops, heroic dogs, and lots of explosions. What more could anyone want? These three books will be out in 2017.

Sounds like my kind of books!

Thanks for visiting with us today, Katie. Would you like to ask our readers a question?

Thank you for having me!

To readers: While researching winter camping for Gone Too Deep, I was reminded how very much I dislike sleeping in a tent. Although I love outdoor activities—hiking, horseback riding, target shooting, biking, cross-country skiing, ATV-ing, running—I want a shower and a soft bed when I’m done. What about you? Do you want to sleep under the stars, or are you sprinting to the nearest hotel with me?

One randomly chosen person leaving a comment before 11:00 pm, August 6, 2016 will receive a copy of Hold Your Breath, the first book in Katie's Search and Rescue series.
(U.S. / Canada only)

Today's Special - - Megan Frampton Blog Tour Review & Giveaway

Why Do Dukes Fall in Love?
By Megan Frampton
Publisher: Avon
Release Date: July 26, 2016

Michael, the Duke of Hadlow, is in need of a secretary—one, he hopes (but isn’t particularly optimistic) this time will not be a complete moron. After interviewing a number of candidates—each dumber than the one before—he meets the perfect secretary: Mrs. Edwina Chetlam. Hadlow isn’t one to allow emotions (“I can’t hire a woman”) to get in the way of logic. Logically, Mrs. Chetlam is everything he desires in a secretary: competent, efficient, courageous, and seemingly able to read his mind. It’s amazing to meet someone who actually doesn’t cower whenever he expresses his frustration but takes him in stride and when necessary, stands up to him. Most importantly, she’s the only one capable to actually do the job.

It’s only natural when their mutual attraction for each other grows and they embark on a passionate affair that only blazes higher instead of fade out (as he expects), and when he decides he needs to take a bride, he soon discovers that instead of marrying a proper woman within his own class, as his secretary advises, he only wants Chetlam. But as a man who has difficulty expressing any emotion other than anger, Hadlow learns the hard way that what he feels for Chetlam is more than just friendship or an ability to rub along together. No, what he feels is no less than true love, but is it too late to get Chetlam to change her mind about marrying him?

Ah, but if there’s anything dukes are especially good at (besides their way around the bedroom), it’s getting what they want.

Normally I’m not a fan of the Boss and the Servant Trope, but I think Ms. Frampton did an excellent job of making the hero and heroine seem very equal. It was always clear Hadlow respected Chetlam (in fact that’s what he always called her, which I adored) and valued her intelligence; and the fact he’s so bad with people in general and she’s his buffer to the rest of the world puts them as partners rather than master and supplicant.

Their banter is hilarious and their conversations always add to the story, growing them both as characters. It was a joy watching Hadlow grow into a more empathetic person; and Chetlam grows in her daring and boldness, which leads to even funnier and more poignant scenes. The running joke about a piece of railroad engine compared to the duke never gets old. A very charming romance.

Review - - Welcome Back

Welcome Back
By Lin Stepp
Publisher: Kensington
Release Date: February 23, 2016

When Lydia Cunningham left her husband, John and moved to Atlanta with their sons ten years ago, she never expected to return to her North Carolina home, at least not while the controlling and verbally abusive mother-in-law who had made her life unbearable still lived. But now, with the woman dead and buried and Lydia's sons grown and on their own, a job offer at her alma mater is taking Lydia back to her beloved Smoky Mountains; back to the husband who let her go and the daughter who chose to stay with him on the family farm when her mother and brothers left. Hoping to repair her strained relationship with her daughter and build one with the grandsons to whom she is a stranger, Lydia accepts her daughter's offer to rent Hill House, the small country home where she and John spent the early - and happiest - years of their marriage before moving into Main House with his mother. She knows being on the farm increases the likelihood of seeing John but she never expects the move to open the door to the possibility of a better, stronger relationship with the husband who had not stood up for her nor emotionally supported her while Lydia withered under his mother's constant verbal abuse.

There are a lot of hurts to be healed here and a dysfunctional family history that, when finally confronted, will cast a new light on how John reacted to his mother's actions before Lydia left. With understanding, compromise, and, most importantly, forgiveness, will this couple who never lost the love they carry in their hearts for one another find a way to learn from past mistakes, put the hurt behind them, mend their marriage - and their family - and begin again?

Lin Stepp is a gifted storyteller who skillfully captures the mystical and enduring history and beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains and the faith, loyalty, and resilience of the people who call them home. This passage illustrates the power these mountains hold for those who hearts they carry:

Lydia's spirit finally grew peaceful on the quiet parkway. At Waterrock Knob she stopped her car to look out over the rolling Blue Ridge mountain ranges and felt a sudden clutch at her heart.

This is home, she thought with a sigh. This beautiful part of the North Carolina mountains. I've never been a city girl at heart - I know that - and Atlanta, despite its cultural wonders and attractions, was only a stopover place for me. Here's where I belong, where the air is crisp and clear and where the sweep of green forested hillsides fills the senses.

I used to live in this region and the above quote from Welcome Back perfectly describes how I would feel each time I returned home and those majestic mountains came into view. There's something very special about them. As Stepp says, "they fill the senses," and they also touch the soul.

Stepp's writing is smooth and easy, bringing the reader into the hearts of her characters, showing (not telling) us their intersecting journey from multiple, individual perspectives. Her characters make mistakes, they stumble. They are complex, flawed, and real and while that makes me angry with them at times and sympathetic to them at others, it also makes me appreciate and enjoy their journey all the more.

I'll be returning for more of Lin Stepp's engaging and heartwarming stories.

Today's Special - - Ultimate Western Blog Tour: Delores Fossen

Today's stop on the TLC Ultimate Western Blog Tour features USA Today Bestselling Author Delores Fossen and Texas On My Mind, the first book in her HQN The McCord Brothers series. I enjoyed the second McCord Brothers book, Lone Star Nights (click to read my review) so much I immediately downloaded Texas On My Mind as well as the two series novellas, Cowboy Trouble and What Happens on the Ranch.  I also have my book buying calendar marked for September 27th and the next book in the series, Blame It On The Cowboy.

Top Ten Things You Didn't Know About Texas On My Mind
by Delores Fossen

1. The town of Spring Hill is named for my family’s ranch where I lived until I was eight years old.

2.   In the book Riley has identical twin brothers. I have triplet sisters so I know a little about the “fun” that can happen with identical siblings.

3.  Like Riley, I was an Air Force officer, and I got to meet several special ops guys, including some Combat Rescue Officers.

4. My three-year old nephew gave me the name for the town’s café, Fork & Spoon. His second choice was Eat Up.

5.  My daughter was getting married at the time I wrote the book, and I asked her wedding photographer research questions since the heroine, Claire, and he share the same profession.

6.  Claire’s two-year old son, Ethan, loves toy cars as did my own son. I got to witness plenty of play time with a toddler and his cars and used that in some of the scenes.

7.    Even though I don’t mention it by name, I patterned the base that Riley visits after Lackland AFB in San Antonio.

8.   I often use pictures of celebrities on my story board when I’m writing. The one I used for Riley was actor, Josh Hartnett.

9.  Like Claire, I have done a house remodel and have scraped plenty of wallpaper. It was just as hard for Claire as it was for me.

10.  My working title for the book was Have I Told You Lately, but I like Texas On My Mind much better.

Texas On My Mind
By Delores Fossen
Publisher: HQN
Release Date: February 23, 2016

Air force captain Riley McCord has come home on medical leave to find one heck of a welcome reception. Every unattached woman in Spring Hill, Texas, wants to nurse him back to health. That includes his childhood friend Claire Davidson—the only person who understands how damaged he really feels. In high school, she chose his best friend over him. According to Riley's rules, that should make her off-limits forever. But when Claire suggests a no-strings fling, he can't refuse.
Claire always wanted Riley—but she also craved the safety and stability he couldn't offer. So she chose another path, only to end up crazier about him than ever. She's even convinced herself that this time she won't be devastated when he leaves. Yet once Riley realizes the depth of Claire's feelings—and his own—he'll have to make the ultimate choice: return to the job he loves or stay home for the woman who's always lived in his heart.
