Her first marriage was an epic fail.
Lady Avalon Warwyk never did love her husband. Arrogant, selfish, and cruel, it’s a blessing when she’s widowed and left to raise her son all by herself. Finally, Avalon can live freely and do the work she loves: helping fallen women become businesswomen. She’s lived these past ten years with no desire to remarry―that is, until Mr. Devan Farris comes to town.
Can he convince her to take another chance at happily ever after?
Devan Farris―charming vicar, reputed rake, and the brother of Avalon’s son’s guardian―is reluctantly sent to town to keep tabs on Avalon and her son. Devan wishes he didn’t have to meddle in her affairs; he’s not one to trod on a woman’s independent nature and keen sense of convictions. But she’ll have nothing to do with a vicar with a wild reputation―even though he’s never given his heart and body to another. If only he could find a way to show Avalon who he really is on the inside―a good, true soul looking for its other half. But how can prove that he wants to love and care for her. . .until death do they part?

PJ's Thoughts:

I love a good enemies to lovers story. Add a vicar hero and a misunderstood heroine into the mix and I'm one happy reader.

One of the things that I most enjoy about Janna MacGregor's writing is the complexity of her characters. Having been introduced to both Devan and Avalon earlier in the Cavensham Heiresses series, assumptions were made about who they were as people. To be honest, I wasn't overly fond of either of them. How fun it was to have those assumptions turned on their head. MacGregor slowly and skillfully guides both characters through a steady progression of peeling back the layers they've each used as protection while exposing their innermost thoughts and feelings to one another as well as to us, the readers.

I adored Devan and Avalon together. So much delicious friction there just waiting to be ignited. Once the motivations for Avalon's past actions were revealed, I began to soften toward her and, after learning everything she'd endured and overcome, as well as what she had, and continued, to accomplish for the people of her small community, I was firmly in her corner. By the end of the book, I wanted to be her friend, and Mary's as well.

As stated earlier, I love a good vicar hero but, early on, I had doubts whether Devan would be able to fulfill my hopes. I'm happy to report I was very wrong about him. He evolves so beautifully throughout the story, as his feelings for Avalon deepen and as he allows his true character to surface. I especially enjoyed how MacGregor unveiled his character not only through his relationship with Avalon but also through his interactions with Avalon's young son, Thane, as well as the members of his parish.

I turned the final page of the book with a deep sigh and firm conviction that these two will spend a lifetime challenging one another, laughing together, nurturing their family, and enjoying a deep, enduring love.

Wild, Wild Rake is the final book in Janna MacGregor's The Cavensham Heiresses series. Each book in the series, including this final one, can be read as a standalone though there are characters whose stories continue to evolve throughout the series. While I'm sorry to bid these characters farewell, I can't wait to discover what MacGregor has in store for readers next.

Save the date for this funny and poignant novel of family, friendship, letting go, and moving on by the award-winning author of Room to Breathe.

Once upon a time, Melanie Layton and Tennyson O’Rourke were inseparable—but their friends-4ever promises were shattered when an explosive secret was revealed at Mel’s wedding, a secret that destroyed her family. The two haven’t spoken for the past twenty-some-odd years, and they’d be happy if they never crossed paths again.

But now Mel’s daughter and Teeny’s son have fallen in love—and announced their engagement.

Which means the two women must tolerate one another and play nice long enough to plan their children’s dream wedding. From the beginning, they clash. Melanie imagines a classy, elegant event, in keeping with tradition. Teeny’s vision is a bit more extravagant, and thanks to her habit of marrying well, she’s got the cash to plan the flashiest wedding of the season.

Complicating matters are the men in their lives: Tennyson is falling for the wrong guy, and Melanie is trying to hold on to a flailing marriage. Amid the flurry of cake tastings, dress fittings, seating charts, and bridal showers, Mel and Teeny confront their past mistakes—with twenty years of pent-up drama.

When the day of the wedding finally arrives, their friendship might just be something old and something new.

Review - - Husband Material

HUSBAND MATERIAL
by Emily Belden
Publisher: Graydon House
Release Date: December 30, 2019
Reviewed by Hellie

Twenty-nine-year-old Charlotte Rosen has a secret: she’s a widow. Ever since the fateful day that leveled her world, Charlotte has worked hard to move forward. Great job at a hot social media analytics company? Check. Roommate with no knowledge of her past? Check. Adorable dog? Check. All the while, she’s faithfully data-crunched her way through life, calculating the probability of risk—so she can avoid it.

Yet Charlotte’s algorithms could never have predicted that her late husband’s ashes would land squarely on her doorstep five years later. Stunned but determined, Charlotte sets out to find meaning in this sudden twist of fate, even if that includes facing her perfectly coiffed, and perfectly difficult, ex-mother-in-law—and her husband’s best friend, who seems to become a fixture at her side whether she likes it or not.

But when her quest reveals a shocking secret, Charlotte is forced to answer questions she never knew to ask and to consider the possibility of forgiveness. And when a chance at a new life arises, she’ll have to decide once and for all whether to follow the numbers or trust her heart.

Hellie’s Heeds

The writing is very tight, and the voice is super-personable and engaging. You feel like you know Charlotte, and while she has some quirks that will make you want to shake her, or at the very least direct her to your therapist, she is someone who is very relatable. Like many romantic comedies, this story feels more “romantic elements” than outright romance, and again, this comes with the territory of what we’re dealing with as the premise: the heroine is a widow whose husband’s ashes show up on her doorstep, and she’s really never dealt with her grief in his sudden death. That sorta sucks out all the romance to be had.

Still, as a reader, you can relate to a character who is clearly doing the best she can with an untenable situation. It’s not enough that her husband’s ashes showed up, but her monster mother-in-law is back, trying to once again hijack the situation in order to have the resolution she desires rather than considering what his young widow may also desire.

What this book does exceptionally well is show how messy and complicated grief is, especially in how everyone deals with grief in their own way. Even when you’re wanting to shake Charlotte for some very unproductive behavior, you get it. If you’ve ever been on the losing end of grief in a big way, you understand the quirky weird stuff people do to just get through. And this story shows just how stuck Charlotte has been these last five years and how receiving her husband’s ashes has opened up her life to consider the things she’s doing to close herself off from family, friends, and even her roommate. It gives her a chance to start over and process her grief in a more effective way. Something few people are able to do in the early days when the grief is fresh and overwhelming.

The love interest Brian is wonderful, but he’s a bit of a second fiddle in the plot, in my opinion. And the monster mother-in-law is revealed to have done some of her stunts for “the greater good” which felt weird and off. I’m not sure I entirely bought into the premise of why she did what she did to her young new daughter-in-law. But again, everyone deals with grief in their own way and we’re all doing the best we can. That is pretty much the summary of this book.

It’s a bit like Kristan Higgins’ chick lit type books: it’s funny, it’s poignant, but it’s not always an easy read (and for me, not automatic keepers because I have no desire to necessarily read books like this a second time. I’ve already been through the wringer.) It’s a good solid read, but I think you have to be in the mood for that kind of story and know what you’re getting into.

Review - - On the Corner of Hope and Main

On the Corner of Hope and Main
by Beverly Jenkins
A Blessings Novel - Book 10
Publisher: William Morrow
Release Date: March 3, 2020

Citizens of Henry Adams, Kansas, know there’s never a dull moment in their small town…
Trent July has been the mayor of this historic town for the past four years, but now he’s ready to let someone else take up the mantle. Barrett Payne, a former Marine, decides he wants the job. But when a surprise candidate also enters the ring, the town has opinions on who would be the best candidate.
And of course that’s not the only drama, as Malachi “Mal” July continues to make reparations for the damage he’s caused and to the people he’s betrayed, especially his lady love Bernadine. Is she finally ready to forgive him and let the past go?
As the residents of Henry Adams have learned, life will throw obstacles their way, but it’s how they come together and rise above these challenges that keep the bonds of their close-knit community strong.

Santa says:

On The Corner of Hope and Main is the 10th installment in Beverly Jenkins’ Blessings novels. This five star book can easily be read as a stand alone because Ms. Jenkins introduces each character and a bit about who they are as they are woven into the fabric of the story at hand. Suffice it to say that many of the residents of Henry Adams, Kansas - where the Blessings novels take place - will quickly earn a place in your heart. Then there are some who will leave a queasy feeling in your belly much like that fish and chips with Asian slaw you should not have ordered from the diner last Friday night.

After all, what could happen in a small town election that has a former Marine colonel and his wife, Barrett and Sheila Payne, vying for mayor along with two-bit barber Riley Curry? He’s bankrolled by one Leo Brown, the disgruntled ex-husband of Bernadine Brown who bought Henry Adams off EBay (WHAT? YES!)  with her divorce settlement money. The answer is - PLENTY.

Bernadine Brown is well respected by many of the town’s residents. There are some who are disgruntled as happens in many small towns though not quite as colorfully as in Henry Adams. Bernadine has issues of her own to deal with. Her love, Mal July, has to prove to her that he still loves her despite how he betrayed her and so many in the town. Their struggles are as real as their true feelings for one another. You will find yourself cheering for them! You’ll find yourself cheering for Barrett and Sheila, Crystal - Bernadine’s foster daughter as she follows her dreams and sweet Gemma and her budding romance.

I grew up in a small town in the Northeast and live in one now. I could identity with Ms. Jenkins’ characters and the historical, vibrant town they live in and the lives they lead. It’s easy to fall comfortably into their world for a little while and feel welcome there. Don’t miss this or any of the Blessings novels. You’ll be happy you picked them up!

Blog Tour Review - - TUCKER

TUCKER
by Emily March
The McBrides of Texas - Book 2
Publisher: St. Martin's Paperbacks
Release Date: February 25, 2020
Reviewed by PJ

Hope springs eternal in this enchanting Texas town.
Meet Gillian Thacker. Her business: Bliss Bridal Salon. Her passion: Weddings. Her own wedding: It’s complicated. Life isn’t turning out like she’d planned. The last thing she wants is for a real-life hero to ride to her rescue when an unexpected event puts her entire future in Redemption, Texas, at risk. So what’s a broken-hearted bridal expert to do? Maybe a new set of survival skills is exactly what she needs…
Tucker McBride has been proud to call himself a U.S. Army Ranger. But now that his days of service are over, he’s decided to put his expertise to use by founding a wilderness skills training school. He sets up shop in Redemption, next to Bliss Bridal, and so begins life: Part Two. Marriage has been pretty low on his agenda, but as soon as he meets Gillian, Tucker can’t help but contemplate the ultimate challenge: Convincing the reluctant bride to take his hand and leap into the adventure of a lifetime. . .until death do they part.

PJ's Thoughts:

I'm really enjoying the new community of characters March has brought to her Eternity Springs series through this connected - but standalone - trilogy. I fell in love with her McBride family before she created Eternity Springs so it's been fun to follow second generation McBride cousins Jackson and Tucker (and next up, Boone) as they navigate the trials of starting over and finding love in Enchanted Canyon.

I fell hard for Tucker. He's such a good guy: sexy, honorable, and caring. He's a bit lost when he arrives in Redemption, having retired from the Army and not sure what he wants to do with the rest of his life. March does a good job of showing his evolution. I love how much he cares for his family. His relationship with Jackson's young daughter is especially poignant. I also love how well he knows Gillian, often better than she knows herself.

Gillian took longer to warm up to. She runs a successful business but personally, she's a mess. For almost half the book she's engaged to someone else and when that ends (he's a cheating jerk), it sends her self-confidence and trust in her own decisions into a spiral. I understood her caution with Tucker (their romantic relationship doesn't begin until after her engagement ends) but I grew frustrated with how she treats him and his feelings for her. She comes around in the end but I wanted more evidence of her investment in their relationship. I'm hoping to see that in the final book of the trilogy.

March infused the story with plenty of good humor and heart-tugging emotion to keep me engaged and gives readers a peek into Boone's dilemma that has me eagerly anticipating his story in the next chapter of the McBrides of Texas.

You don't have to have read the Eternity Springs books - or the earlier McBride books - to enjoy TUCKER. I do, however, recommend reading JACKSON first for a better understanding of characters from JACKSON whose stories continue in TUCKER.
