Today's Special -- Julianne MacLean

Today, I welcome best-selling historical author Julianne MacLean back to the Romance Dish! I first discovered Julianne's books when I won an ARC of Surrender to a Scoundrel--one of her American Heiresses series books--back in 2006. It remains one of my all-time favorite books to this day. :) Since then, Julianne has gone on to write about the Sinclair family, some sexy Highlanders, and a trilogy centered around royalty. If you haven't read any of Julianne's books, I encourage you to do so! Right now, I'm reading her latest, Seduced at Sunset, and enjoying it immensely. Please welcome Julianne!

Series Conclusions…How Do We Say Goodbye?

By Julianne MacLean

Have you ever wanted to weep after finishing a series you have loved from the beginning? Did you feel as if you were grieving for a lost loved one because you were forced to say goodbye to characters who had become such an enjoyable part of your life?

Imagine the author, who has spent countless hours—and years—living in the story world she created.  I assure you, it’s not always easy for an author to move on and start something new, to envision a whole new world with a different set of characters—characters she knows nothing about.  She can’t help but wonder, will the new series have the same magic?  And what about the secondary characters who were left behind without ever getting stories of their own?

I find myself in a strange state of mourning these days because I am bidding farewell to not one, but two separate series.  Timing can be cruel sometimes.

On April 30, The Prince’s Bride will hit bookstores, and that is the last book in a trilogy I began with St. Martin’s Press. I am a passionate fan of The Tudors series on television, so I took great pleasure in creating a fictional European nation called Petersbourg, modeled after the Tudor Court but set in the Regency period.  It became home to a family of charismatic young royals who were surrounded by romance and court intrigue, and each had to marry and produce heirs to continue their legacy.

I must also let go of another series revolving around an aristocratic family in England—the Sinclairs of Pembroke Palace.  This was a series I began at Avon in 2007, but when I changed publishers, I was unable to finish it at that time.  It was three years before I could finally return to Pembroke and give happy endings to the last two siblings, who had been left hanging since 2009.  Seduced at Sunset is finally released, but I find myself wondering if there is a way to continue both of these series.

The heroine from the first book in my Royal Trilogy had some sisters…. Perhaps they could be presented at court in Petersbourg.  And all the Sinclair siblings have happy, fruitful marriages.  There is a palace full of grandchildren who will be entering the London marriage mart during the Edwardian period.  Downton Abbey, anyone?

Alas, this is the sort of situation where an author needs to hear from readers.  I read every letter I receive, and when I see the same request over and over for a certain character’s story, I do become inspired to write it—because I respect my readers’ opinions and I like to give you what you want.

So if you ever feel heartbroken that your favorite series has come to an end and would like to see it continue, know that authors are listening.  Most of us are delighted to learn that you want more of something we have written.  We can often be persuaded to find a way to bring a series back to life.

So what do you think?  Have you ever written to an author to request the continuation of a series?  What series have you mourned when it reached the end?  Would you love it if the author returned to it, or can a series become stale if the author doesn’t know when to let it go?

All comments will be included in a random draw (open to everyone!) to win an autographed advance reading copy of The Prince’s Bride, my Royal Trilogy conclusion, which hits bookstores April 30.  I will be reading everyone’s comments.  Good luck!

Guest Review - - Whiskey Beach

Whiskey Beach
By Nora Roberts
Publisher: Putnam
Release Date: April 16, 2013

Battered by his experience as prime suspect in the murder of his not-quite-ex wife, Eli Landon retreats to Bluff House, the historic house in Whiskey Beach that has been the home of the Landon family for three centuries. Although insufficient evidence meant that Eli was never arrested, his position as a “person of interest” and the media frenzy surrounding the police investigation have destroyed life as he knew it. His career as a criminal defense lawyer and rising star in a prestigious Boston firm is over, and most of his friends, convinced of his guilt, have abandoned him. His parents, his sister and brother-in-law, and his paternal grandmother have never wavered in their belief in him, but his concern over the effects of the investigation on his family adds to his burden. When his grandmother is injured in a fall and needs to be in Boston for physical therapy, Bluff House is empty. It offers space and privacy and is a perfect refuge for Eli to work on the legal thriller he is writing and to discover who Eli Landon has become after the emotional storms of the past year.

Abra Walsh is a yoga instructor, part-time housekeeper, and close friend of Hester Landon, Eli’s grandmother. It was she who found Hester after her fall. Already persuaded of Eli’s innocence by what she knows of the case, Abra responds to the sadness in Eli from their first meeting.  She has survived an experience that left her a different person and understands Eli on a level that few can. She is also a nurturer by nature, and she proves herself as adept at taking care of Eli as she is at taking care of Bluff House. She prepares food and encourages Eli to eat and pushes him to exercise. She uses her skills as a licensed massage therapist to help him relax, and she persuades him to end his isolation from those outside his family circle.  Abra’s ministrations combine with the memories Bluff House holds and the wonders of the New England coast to end Eli’s apathy and restore the assertiveness that once characterized him.

Eli is uninterested in reclaiming his former life, but he recognizes that he will never be truly free until his wife’s murderer is found. When Abra is attacked at Bluff House and a P. I. who has followed Eli to Whiskey Beach is killed, Eli and Abra begin to suspect that Hester’s injuries may not have been the result of an accident and that the invasions at Bluff House may be linked not only to the legendary pirate treasure that is supposed to be hidden there but also to the murder of Lindsey Landon. Eli and Abra trust one another enough to join forces as sleuths, but can they trust one another enough to surrender their hearts as well?

Nora Roberts once again demonstrates that romantic suspense can be as much character-driven as plot-driven and that romance can remain the heart of the story without sacrificing suspense. Whiskey Beach is essentially Eli’s story. He is the broken character who must find a way to build a new identity and a new life from the pieces that remain. The free-spirited Abra who nurtures him, challenges him, and flirts with him is just the person he needs to bring light and laughter back into his life. She’s also strong enough in her sense of self to meet him on equal ground when he regains his confidence. I liked both these characters, and a full cast of secondary characters that includes Eli’s family (particularly his grandmother), Abra’s yoga students, and a motley collection of detectives enrich the story. The villains are the kind of plausibly evil characters that Roberts can do well.

Two things I always expect in a Nora Roberts romantic suspense novel is a powerful evocation of particular place and a sense that the hero and heroine are actually engaged in their jobs. Roberts certainly fulfilled both those expectations in this book. Bluff House, the beach below it, and the Whiskey Beach community all have a convincing presence in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the details about Eli’s writing process, and even though I found Abra’s list of jobs a stretch, I could visualize her as yoga instructor, massage therapist, and housekeeper.

I rank this one a star below last year’s The Witness, recently released in paperback, but it is a solid read that leaves the reader satisfied with both the romance and the mystery. Fans of Nora Roberts will not want to miss Whiskey Beach, and romantic suspense readers who prefer their RS reads to provide suspense without straying into thriller territory should also enjoy it.

One is Silver, the Other is Gold

"Make new friends but keep the old.  One is silver, the other is gold."

I was nine years old the first time I went away to Girl Scout summer camp.  I remember being excited, but also apprehensive.  I was, after all, only nine years old and I would be away from my family for two weeks with the only communication via hand-written letters sent through the mail.  I was also concerned about making friends.  A shy child, I wasn't used to putting myself "out there" and I was arriving at a camp where I didn't know a soul.  The start was a bit rocky, I'll admit, with homesickness and tears the first couple nights.  But then I settled in and began to enjoy everything camp offered, such as canoeing, swimming, nature hikes, crafts, sharing a tent with three other girls, making s'mores and banana boats over an open fire and outhouses.  Okay, so maybe not the outhouses.  ::wink::  What I discovered about myself during that first two-week camping experience was that even though I was a shy child, I enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends.  By the final night of camp, when we sat around the campfire holding hands and singing the words above, I knew that I had made new friends that I would treasure and looked forward to the next summer when I would meet even more.

Those summers at Girl Scout camp set the tone for the years to come.  I loved going on new adventures and
meeting new people.  The summer of my fourteenth year, I expanded my horizons across the border, traveling to Mexico as an exchange student and living with a family in Mexico City for three months.  A few years later, I spent the summer studying in Europe, making more new friends.  My parents moved from Michigan to Florida while I was in college and all it took was one snowfall to convince me that's where my next adventure awaited.  I was right.  It was in Florida where I met my late husband and I can't imagine what my life would have been like without him in it.  We moved several times during our marriage, eventually landing in South Carolina where I've lived for the last 17 years.  Other than my childhood home, that's the longest I've ever lived in one place.  But now, my next adventure has arrived.

Last week I bid farewell to my home in South Carolina, loaded all of my worldly possessions into a moving van and the dogs and I headed up the road to our new home in North Carolina.  Am I excited?  You bet!  Am I apprehensive?  No, I'm not.  I've learned over the years that each new adventure is a memory waiting to be made; a new friend waiting to be met.  I've also learned that leaving a place doesn't mean leaving the friends that I've made there.  With care, those friendships will endure.  I'm looking forward to future visits with treasured friends and welcoming them to my new home when they come here to visit me.

I'm moving into my new home today and excited for my adventure to begin.  Tell me about your adventures. Have you lived in a lot of different places?  Still living in the area where you grew up?  Do you enjoy the adventure of making new friends?  Any tips for settling into my new home without being overwhelmed by the sea of boxes?

Speaking of boxes, I still have some boxes of books to give away to randomly chosen people who leave comments on today's blog.  (U.S. addresses only)

Review - - The Summer He Came Home

The Summer He Came Home
Bad Boys of Crystal Lake - Book 1
By Juliana Stone
Publisher:  Sourcebooks Casablanca
Release Date:  April 2, 2013

I'm a creature of habit.  I go to bed early and get up with the birds...or in my case, the dogs.  It takes something special to convince me to forego sleep until 2:15 am.  In this case, that something special is Juliana Stone's wonderful new contemporary romance and its I-want-one-of-my-own bad boy hero, Cain Black.

They were the Bad Boys of Crystal Lake, a small town in northern Michigan; more brothers than friends. After high school, they went their separate ways:  Mac to New York City, twins Jesse and Jake to the military and Cain to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of making it in the music business.  More than ten years later, the loss of one of their own brings them home to Crystal Lake for the funeral.  After pursuing their dreams in faraway places, will they ultimately discover that what brings them the greatest happiness is in the little town where it all began?

Cain Black certainly didn't intend to find his future happiness at a funeral.  His life at a crossroads, Cain comes home for the first time in ten years to bury one of his best friends.  Cain's band is on the verge of the success they've been chasing but his personal life has put everything in jeopardy thanks to his cheating ex-wife and his writing partner.  He's no angel but his rock star reputation far exceeds his actual exploits.  At heart, he's a one-woman man and loyal to a fault.  When he meets single mom, Maggie O'Rourke and her  six year old son Michael, Cain decides to stick around Crystal Lake for a while.  Those who believe the publicity machines warn him off sweet Maggie, concerned he's only looking for some summer fun.  However, it soon becomes apparent to Cain that the desire he feels for Maggie is deepening into something more permanent and her adorable son has a firm hold on his heart.  He's ready to consider a commitment to them both but if he can't find a way to break down the walls protecting Maggie's wounded soul and convince her to trust him with her secrets, by summer's end it could be Cain who's nursing a broken heart.

Maggie O'Rourke has finally found peace and security in the small town of Crystal Lake.  The residents have warmly welcomed the single mom and, though they know nothing about her life before appearing in their small town, they accept her at face value and hold her in high esteem. With her business and taking care of an active son, Maggie has no time for romance and the wounds of her past keep her from pursuing any kind of a relationship.  But Cain Black is a man who is slowly breaking down the barriers around Maggie's heart.  Will she learn to trust Cain with her heart and, more importantly, her secrets?  Can a small-town mom who guards her privacy ferociously find happiness with a rock singer who has paparazzi trailing him around the world?

I've been a fan of Juliana Stone's writing since the publication of her debut book.  While I love her paranormal stories, I happily followed her into contemporary with The Summer He Came Home and was not disappointed.  I adore bad boys with a heart of gold and Cain is one of my favorites. By the midway point of the book, I was ready to tell Maggie to take a hike and keep him for myself.  But, alas, I also like Maggie and her son.  The bond that connects the three is so strong that I had to relent and let Maggie keep him.:

Stone has a talent for creating a sense of place in her books.  In her Jaguar Warrior series, she made me feel as if I was in the center of a Central American jungle but with The Summer He Came Home, she took me on a journey of nostalgia by transporting me to the summers of my youth.  I grew up on a lake just outside a small Michigan town and know the sights, sounds and smells of a Michigan summer well.  Stone captures them perfectly.

Stone also excels at creating flawed, intriguing characters who readers want to know better.  In this first book of her new series, she introduces us to a cast of characters who we will come to know better in future books.  Already, I'm invested in their stories and can't wait to travel their journeys with them.

This book was close to a 5 star read for me.  The only thing that kept it from that score was a scene near the end of the book where Maggie and her son are forced to face their past.  While I felt that the scene was necessary, it was too rushed for me; the resolution too quick and too easily moved beyond to be completely believable.  But, that aside, this was a wonderful beginning to what is sure to be another terrific series from Juliana Stone.  I highly recommend that you join me in Crystal Lake!

Do you like bad-boy heroes?  Tell me about your favorites.  I'm giving away a copy of The Summer He Came Home to one randomly chosen person who leaves a comment.  (open internationally to any country where bookdepository.com delivers)

Today's Special - - Linda Joyce

It's my pleasure to welcome award-winning author Linda Joyce to The Romance Dish!  A military child who traveled the world courtesy of the United States Air Force, Linda soaked up the educational opportunities her lifestyle provided.  Her very first manuscript was written while living in Japan.  Linda has taken advantage of a variety of experiences during her life, including taking flying lessons, being a hairdresser and learning to grill a steak to perfection in her role as part-owner of a steakhouse.  These days, she lives in Atlanta with her husband and dogs, General Beauregard, Gentleman Jack and Masterpiece Renoir (don't you just love those names?) and spends her time writing.

Her book, BAYOU BORN is available in print today.  Linda is also hosting a Facebook Launch Party with lots of fun and giveaways, tonight from 8-10pm EDT.  Check out the details in the invitation at the end of this post.

Branna Lind's self-esteem rests at the bottom of the Mississippi River. She canceled her "wedding of the decade," though she isn't saying why. She wants life on her own terms: no ready-made job in the family business, no safety net of close-knit kin, and no more betrayal.

College professor James Newbern prizes his bachelorhood. Experience has taught him beautiful women are high-maintenance trouble and Branna fits that type. He is happy to avoid her until the college vice president assigns him to mentor the newest hire—Branna.

Branna is on her way to a new life, but will the scars of the past send her running from love? Even if she stands her ground, can she convince James that she truly is his "type"?

Please give Linda a warm welcome!

Hey there! I’m excited to share some “insider secrets” about Branna and James. Let me know if you are *surprised* by anything that I am about to reveal. I would love to hear from you!

What or who inspired the Fleur de Lis "keeper" position?
Meeting folks through my travels brought into focus for me that “hometown” is about the same anywhere in the USA and exists even where I lived in Japan. Large extended families have a pecking order. There’s always one person, the “linking key” that keeps the family together. I took that concept and formalized it into the “Keeper.”

At Fleur de Lis, the stories of the past and the traditions are entrusted to Branna. She must “keep” them and Fleur de Lis to ensure future generations understand their heritage. It is a big responsibility.

What inspired James Newbern as a university professor?
I met a very engaging man, an alumnus of my alma mater, who told me that he was an anti-statistic. He’d dropped out of high school, taken the GED, so he could enroll sooner in college. I liked the idea of a having a hero who is more than what he seems. James isn’t the stuffy-professor type, and he’s a Cracker at heart.

Some authors put their pets in their stories. Are any of your dogs in Bayou Born?

I am a big lover of dogs. I started to say, “A big dog lover,” but then that would insult my seven-pound Papillion, Masterpiece Renoir. Yes, one of my three dogs is in Bayou Born. General Beauregard. “Beau” is my Brittany spaniel. While he’s a good bird-hunting dog, he only hunts a few days a year. The rest of the time, he’s my pet. Though, secretly, he thinks I’m his pet. He is the largest of my three dogs weighing close to fifty pounds. Also, more than the other two, he loves to cuddle.

If you were a travel agent sending someone to your hometown, what would be the top three sights you'd want them to see?
Ohhh. I have to break this one down into categories and could list many things for each one. Historical spots. Food delights. Music mojo. And, modern marvels.

History: The French Quarter has many hidden gems. I recommend The Cabildo, a museum that highlights the rich culture of Louisiana. There are nationalities beyond the French and Spanish that influenced the development of New Orleans, such as the Germans, the Irish, and African Americans.

Food: It’s everywhere. From Po’boys, to beignets, to five-star cuisine. The Praline Connection has my favorite pralines in the city.

Music mojo: Preservation Hall is a musical must. However, some of the best sounds come from the sidewalk musicians.

Modern marvels: One place: Mardi Gras World.

What conferences will you attend this year?
In May, I’ll be at the RT Convention in Kansas City. While I’m there, I’m having a launch party
for Bayou Born because that’s where the writing began. I have so many wonderful supportive friends there and want to celebrate with them.

Then, you can find me at the Southeastern Writer’s Workshop on beautiful St. Simon’s Island in June. http://southeasternwriters.org/Writers_Workshop.html
And RWA Nationals, because it’s in Atlanta this year, in July.

What is your favorite guilty pleasure?
I LOVE Tremé, an HBO show which will air its fourth and final season this year. http://www.hbo.com/treme/index.html It shows the music, food, history, and the struggles of New Orleans after the storm. I’m sad that it will end. I also love Downton Abbey, The Big Bang Theory and cooking shows.

Do you have a fear of thunderstorms like Branna?
Yes! I went to high school and college in Florida. Florida is the lightning capitol of the US. Frequently in the Florida news, someone’s been struck and killed by lightning and there wasn’t even a storm nearby.

When I worked in Tampa on the 5th floor of a high rise, I was lucky to have a windowed office. Lightning struck the corner of the building right by me. I had a little toy that made sounds sitting on the windowsill. It literally blew the gizmo apart. Others down the hall heard the sound and came running. Let’s just say I have a healthy fear of lightning.

I have enjoyed my time with you. I sincerely hope you’ll enjoy Bayou Born.

Do you have a fear of thunderstorms?  If you have pets, do they head for cover when lightning flashes and thunder rolls in?  How do you counter your fear?  How do you help your pets overcome their fear?  Linda is giving away a Kindle copy of Bayou Born to one randomly chosen person who leaves a comment!

Today's Special - - Kate Noble

It's always a pleasure to welcome Kate Noble to The Romance Dish. Andrea and I both enjoy Kate's books and have been looking forward to her new release, Let It Be Me.  Apparently, we're not the only ones who think Kate writes terrific historical romances.  Her books have earned starred reviews from Library Journal and Publisher's Weekly. The Summer of You (one of my favorites) placed on Kirkus Reviews' Best Romance list and Revealed was a RITA finalist for best Regency Historical Romance.

Find more information about Kate and her books at her website, like her Facebook page, follow her on Twitter and become a fan at Goodreads.

Welcome, Kate!  Congratulations on the release of Let It Be Me.  Please tell our readers what they can expect from this book.

-- A history of the geography of Venice and a comprehensive lesson on how to play a Beethoven sonata.  ;) Seriously though, Let It Be Me is the story of Bridget Forrester, who is a brilliant pianist with a bad case of stage fright.  When she gets the chance to study with renowned composer Vincenzo Carpenini, she doesn’t hesitate to hop on a boat and sail for Venice.  But when she arrives, Carpenini’s never hear of her!  But Carpenini’s friend Oliver Merrick has, and actually was the one who sought her out.  When the men become embroiled in a musical wager, they need Bridget’s help – and more than money is at stake.

I love the opening lines of the prologue:   Before there were ever words, there was music.  A
language in and of itself, music is the background to life, where emotion dwells.   What beautiful words, evoking a swell of emotion in my own heart and setting the stage for the story to come.  Music plays a significant role in the lives of your main characters.  Does it in your life as well?

-- I studied music growing up, being forced into piano lessons, and eventually moving onto an instrument more my speed (the trumpet.  It only has 3 keys.)  While I was involved in musicals and marching band all the way through college, it was never as wholly engrossing for me as it is for Bridget.  I sort of wish it was.  There is something very brave and vulnerable about being so deeply passionate about something, as Bridget is about music.  It’s one of the many things that I admire about her.

You’ve taken the setting of this story out of the traditional London and moved it to Venice, Italy.  (which happens to be one of my favorite cities)  What made you choose Venice as the setting and do you plan to use other non-traditional settings for future books?

-- I knew I had to get Bridget out of London – she needed a blank slate, and not have to deal with the prejudices that had emerged against her in her previous season (she did not fare well in comparison to her sister Sarah in If I Fall).  And Venice – Venice exists like a dream to me.  An island city where you travel by gondola?  What could be a more perfect place to fall in love?

This is not the first time I’ve ventured outside of England – my novel Follow My Lead takes place mostly in Germany and Austria.  I find it refreshing – while I love the ballroom manners of Regency London, its nice to be reminded that the world is wide and with a very rich history, ready to be mined.

What is the one thing you’d like our readers to know about Bridget and Oliver, the heroine and hero of Let It Be Me?

-- Well, it doesn’t hurt to mention that Oliver is a tall, strong former actor who studied boxing in his youth with dark hair and light, laughing eyes.  But the most important thing about Bridget and Oliver is the support they give each other – Oliver especially is someone Bridget, who is under immense pressure can lean on.  All the flashy, flirting men in the world cannot compare to the steadiness Oliver gives her without question.

Without giving away any spoilers, what is the one scene you would never cut from this book?

-- oh goodness!  I don’t know if I could cut any.  But I would never cut the prologue.  And that might be considered controversial, because it could easily go, without affecting the general story.  But it means too much to me, showing how music has been a constant in Bridget and Oliver’s lives and how it has come to represent love to them both.

Let’s talk about you for a minute.  How do you relax when you’re not busy writing?  Do you have any favorite hobbies or activities?

-- I haven’t not been busy with writing in… too long to mention.  But on those rare occasions I cobble a weekend together, I like to explore new places.  I live in southern California, so there are many options, where I can sightsee, hike, wine-taste, etc.

This book reminded me of how much I love traveling, especially in Italy.  What’s your favorite travel destination?  Is there a place on your bucket list that you haven’t visited yet?

-- I love travelling in Europe, spent part of college in England, and recently took my first trip to South America.  But one thing I’ve never done is a cross-country road trip!  I’m planning on remedying that soon.

We all have our favorite comfort reads around here.  To what books or authors do you turn when you’re in need of a little fictional comfort?

-- Pride and Prejudice is the only book I’ve read over a dozen times.  It puts me exactly where I want to be when I need it.  But I also will seek out anything by JK Rowling or John Green when I need to lose myself for a few days.

If you were doing a self-interview, what question would you ask yourself that’s never been asked of you before?  How would you answer?

-- I would probably ask myself where I want to be in five years time.  Granted this is a question that has been asked, but generally by my mother.  In five years time, I would love to have hit the NYT list, with a Rita in hand and a couple personal accomplishments under my belt.

What’s next?

-- I’m working on a new trilogy, the first of which will be out in 2014.  I’m also working on a comic book about an Edwardian superhero with Javier Grillo-Marxuach (creator of the Middleman) and artist Kel McDonald, and I am unabashedly excited about it.   And finally, I’m also working on The Lizzie Bennet Diaries spinoff, Welcome to Sanditon.  (see, I told you I haven’t had free time in too long to mention.)

Thank you for graciously answering my questions today, Kate.  Do you have a question for our readers?

-- Sure!  Since we talked a great deal about travel, tell me, what’s your favorite place you’ve ever been?  Or what city do you think is the best place to fall in love?  One lucky commenter will win a copy of Let It Be Me! (US only)

New Releases for April

It’s April and we have been busy, busy in my house! We recently adopted a dog (a sweet black lab named Miles), I had dental surgery, my kids are on spring break this week, and my daughter’s birthday is in a couple weeks! We’ve been so busy that I haven’t had as much time to read—GASP! I’m back at it now and LOVING Julie James’s Love Irresistibly. It is terrific so far! Next up is Seduced at Sunset by Julianne MacLean. Should be good! I’m also looking forward to Julia Quinn’s The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After, Let It Be Me by Kate Noble, and While We Were Watching Downton Abbey by Wendy Wax.

Which April releases have you read? Of those, which ones do you recommend? Which ones are you most looking forward to reading? Tell us and one lucky commenter will win a random book from my prize stash!

Until May, happy reading!
