PJ's Birthday Bash - - Vanessa Kelly

Vanessa Kelly and her husband, Randy write as V.K. Sykes
It's the last day of my Birthday Bash and we're wrapping things up with one of my favorite people, the wonderful Vanessa Kelly! When she's not busy writing regency historical romances, Vanessa teams up with her husband to pen romantic suspense, sports-themed contemporary romance and their current small-town contemporary series set in the fictional Seashell Bay, a small island off the coast of Maine. I highly recommend them all!

For more information about Vanessa and her books, visit her website and connect with her online at FacebookTwitter, and Goodreads

Thanks so much for helping me celebrate my birthday, Vanessa!

Blairgal Castle
Scottish Highlands

Alec Gilbride strolled down the long corridor of the east wing, heading for his wife’s private sitting room. His grandfather was napping by the fireplace in his private sitting room (Blairgal had at least a dozen of them), his father was busy in the library, and the dinner bell wouldn’t ring for at another hour. Perfect timing for a private afternoon visit with Edie—emphasis on private.

The door to the sitting room opened and their butler came trotting out, carrying an enormous silver platter.

“Hallo, Barclay. What are you up to?” Alec said.

“Good afternoon, Captain. I just brought Mrs. Gilbride a nice cup of tea, along with some scones and lovely piece of Cook’s plum cake.”

Alec frowned. “What the devil is she doing drinking tea at this time of day?” Normally, he and his wife indulged in a glass of whisky before dinner. A nice cup of tea and some plum cake hardly sounded like an inducement to amorous activities.

“I wouldn’t know, sir,” Barclay said in an excessively dignified tone. “You’ll have to ask Mrs. Gilbride. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to see about the lobster patties.”

Tea and lobster patties? What a gruesome combination. Something decidedly odd was afoot.

Edie was sitting by a cozy fire, scowling over the top of her spectacles at a piece of paper. She looked up, a warm smile replacing her frown. “I was wondering when I would see you. You’re rather late today.”

“Well, I’m here now.” He sat beside her and tipped up her chin for a quick kiss. “So whatever it is you’re working on, you can put it aside. I have other things in mind for the afternoon’s activities.”

Edie laughed and batted his hands away from the bodice of her gown. “None of that, sir. I’m too busy to spend the afternoon dallying with you.”

“You’re never too busy for that,” Alec said, raising his eyebrows.

“Well, I am today,” she said, again frowning down at her list.

He plucked it out of her hand. “What is this? And who are all these people?” A horrible thought occurred to him. “Good Gad. You’re not planning on inviting all these people to Blairgal for Christmas, are you? We already have your mother to contend with.”

“No, she has other plans. And you love my mother.”

Alec decided that, for once, discretion was the better part of valor. “Then what’s all this for?”

“It’s the guest list for PJ’s birthday party. I must get all the invitations in the mail immediately.”

“She certainly seems to have a lot of friends,” Alec said, peering at the long list of names. “Manda Collins, Debbie Mason, Janga, Anna Campbell, Christina Dodd, Theresa Medeiros...hmm. Why are you only inviting women?”

Edie took the list back with an aggrieved sigh. “There are men included—you just failed to notice. Randy Sykes, for instance. He’s a wonderful man who writes contemporary romance and romantic suspense.”

Alec narrowed his gaze. “Wonderful, is he? How well do you know the blighter?”

Edie whacked him on the arm. “He’s married to Vanessa Kelly, you big oaf. There’s no need for you to be jealous.”

“Just checking.” He picked up another piece of paper from the low table in front of them. “Is this the menu for the party? You’ve got a lot of food here, old girl. Who’s paying for all this?”

“We are.”

“Oh, splendid,” he said. “I can just hear Grandfather complaining about the bills now.”

Edie rolled her eyes. “We can afford it. Besides, PJ is more than worth it.”

“She’d better be, because lobster patties are bloody expensive.”

The door opened and a dark-haired young woman strode into the room. She was clad in some kind of leggings, and a shirt that bore the words: Keep calm and eat lobster. “Did I hear you say lobster? How much do you need?”

“Good Lord,” Alec said, as he and Edie stared at her. “Who are you and why are you dressed like that?”

“I’m Lily Flynn, from Seashell Bay, Maine. I captain a lobster boat. If you need lobster, I’m your gal.”

Edie waved a vague finger at the attractive woman’s legs. “Is that what you wear when you’re, um, catching lobster?”

Lily glanced down at herself. “Jeans and rubber boots? What else would I wear on a fishing boat—a ballgown?”

“Good point,” Edie said. “Now, how many pounds of lobster can you provide on short notice? We need quite a lot, since we have several hundred romance writers and readers coming to the party. Oh, that reminds me. Alec, can you take care of the champagne?”

He mentally winced. Romance writers and champagne? It was a recipe for disaster.

“Hmm,” Lily said. “I think we can—”

The door flew open again and Lady Reese marched into the room. “Eden Gilbride, are you planning a birthday party for PJ without me? How can you even begin to think of organizing such an important event without my support?”

“Oh, sorry, Mamma,” Edie said. “I thought you’d already left for London with Fergus.”

Fergus Haddon was Alec’s cousin. Lady Reese had taken it into her head that she needed to drag the poor lad down to London to find him a wife—a Sassenach, no less. Alec very much doubted that his cousin would go along with that plan.

Lady Reese scowled. “That excessively exasperating young man seems to have disappeared for the moment. I’ve sent Shana Galen, Theresa Romain, and Kate Noble out to look for him. In the meantime, I thought I would help with the party planning.”

“Excellent idea,” Edie said. “Perhaps you could talk to Lily about how much lobster we need for the patties.”

Lady Reese inspected Lily with a disapproving eye. “Dear me, young woman. Why are you dressed in that very odd fashion?”

Lily rolled her eyes. “Because I’m a fishing boat captain.”

“That’s certainly an unusual profession for a lady, although I generally approve of women being able to support themselves. One can never become too dependent on a man, you know,” Lady Reese said. “But I simply cannot allow you to run around the castle dressed in so scandalous a fashion. You will give Alec’s grandfather palpitations if he sees you.”

Her ladyship grabbed Lily by the arm and began to drag her out of the room. Lily objected, but Alec could have told her not to bother. What his mother-in-law wanted, she usually got.

“Don’t worry about the party, Eden dear,” Lady Reese called over Lily’s protests. “This young person and I will take care of everything—after I get her properly attired.”

The door slammed shut behind them, and silence once more returned.

“Thank God,” Alec said. “As much as I appreciate your mother’s decisive attitude, sometimes it’s a bit much.”

“I know, and you’re a darling to put up with her,” Edie said. His wife patted him on the cheek before reaching behind her to grab a mass of wool yarn in a bright yellow shade. Alec eyed her with consternation as she also extracted two long knitting needles from under the cushions of the chaise. Now that they were alone, he was hoping they could return to business, as it were. But Edie appeared to have other ideas.

“Now what are you doing?” he asked in a frustrated voice.

“What does it look like? I’m knitting.”

“But you don’t knit.” His wife rarely engaged in typically feminine activities. She was dreadful at needlework, and even worse on the pianoforte.

“I do now,” she said.

Suspicious, Alec peered at whatever it was she was making. “Is that a…”

“Baby bootie,” she said in a shy voice. Then she blushed.

Since Edie wasn’t prone to blushing, Alec had to think it through. When the answer finally came to him, he felt like someone had thumped him on the head. “Good God, are you…” He seemed to unable to finish his sentences.

“Surprise,” she said with a grin, holding up the unevenly knit bootie. “In about seven months time, we’re going to be celebrating another birthday.”

Good God, Edie was…was pregnant! He swept her into his arms and planted an enthusiastic kiss on her lips. “It’s a splendid surprise, my love. You’ve made me very happy.”

She hugged him close, then gave him a sly little smile. “And now that we’re alone, perhaps we should celebrate the impending event. I can think of the perfect way to do so.” She reached for the buttons on his waistcoat, but then paused and sucked in a pained breath.

“What’s wrong?” he asked with concern.

“Nothing, really. I’m just feeling a bit queasy at the moment.”

“You are looking a little green around the gills,” he said.

A moment later, she was scrambling off the chaise. “You’ll have to excuse—” She clapped a hand to her mouth and raced for the door.

Alec sighed and followed her from the room. He could foresee a long seven months ahead. But there’d be much joy—and a wonderful party—at the end of it.

At sixteen, Alasdair Gilbride, heir to a Scottish earldom, fled the Highlands and an arranged betrothal. Ten years later, Alasdair must travel home to face his responsibilities. It’s a task that would be much easier without the distracting presence of the most enticing woman he’s ever met…
After one escapade too many, Eden Whitney has been snubbed by the ton. The solution: rusticating in the Scottish wilderness, miles from all temptation. Except, of course, for brawny, charming Alasdair. The man is so exasperating she’d likely kill him before they reach the border—if someone else weren’t trying to do just that. Now Eden and Alasdair are plunging into a scandalous affair with his life and her reputation at stake—and their hearts already irreparably lost…

Want to know more about Lily, our Seashell Bay fishing boat captain? Pick up a copy of her book, Meet Me At The Beach.

YOU CAN’T STOP A RISING TIDE
When Lily Doyle spots her high school crush Aiden Flynn on the inbound ferry, she knows trouble is about to dock in Seashell Bay. And not just because he’s more handsome than ever. If Aiden’s in town, the rumors must be true about his family’s plan to sell their coastal land to the highest bidder. But Lily will do whatever it takes to convince the hottest guy on the beach to protect their idyllic island home.
Gorgeous Lily Doyle was the only thing Aiden missed after he escaped from his hometown to play pro baseball. PJ's Birthday Bash - - Debbie Mason

I'm delighted to welcome one of my favorite small-town contemporary romance authors to TRD! I first discovered Debbie in 2010 (writing as Debbie Mazzuca) when I fell in love with her debut, a Scottish historical paranormal romance titled Lord of the Isles. Two years ago, she changed her pen name to Debbie Mason and her writing to contemporary romance, introducing readers to the lively residents of the mountain town of Christmas, Colorado with the release of The Trouble With Christmas. That first book was all it took to reel me into this quaint town with its heartwarming stories, occasional danger, and cast of quirky characters. Five books later, I still look forward to each new story with joyful anticipation. Today, Debbie is bringing us a new scene from Christmas, written just for us, starring the lead characters from her new book, Snowbound at Christmas. Thank you, Debbie!

Christmas, Colorado
Present Day

Cat walked toward the man sitting in front of the outdoor brick fireplace. Grayson turned his head and gave her a smile that made her knees weak and her heart flutter.
            "How long do you think we have before they figure out we're not there?" he asked, as she settled in the chair beside him.
            She spread the blanket over them and glanced at the kitchen window. "Ten minutes, if we're lucky."
            "We better make the most of it then," he said, opening his hand to reveal a sprig of mistletoe. He waggled his eyebrows and held it over their heads.
            She laughed and curved her hand around his neck, drawing his mouth to hers. "I like the way--"
            "Time for the birthday cake, you two. You can go back to canoodling later." Nell's voice cut through the cold night air.
            Grayson groaned against Cat's lips. "That wasn't even ten seconds."
            Cat felt like groaning too, but she didn't want to miss her niece's reaction to her first birthday cake. "Leave everything here. We'll come back as soon we're done. Promise," she said when Grayson gave her a skeptical look.
            The first thing Cat noticed as they walked into the great room was the bearskin rug in front of the floor-to-ceiling fireplace. Her sister-in-law Skye was an animal rights activist. With today's excitement, they hadn't had time to hide the rug when her brother and his family arrived at the ranch. They'd taken turns sitting on it to keep it concealed, but someone had obviously fallen down on the job. Thankfully, Skye was nowhere in sight.
             Cat, with Grayson in tow, made a beeline for the rug. She pulled Ty and Annie down with them. Her brother, who was sitting on a wingback chair with Evie on his lap, frowned. Then his eyes went wide when he realized what they were hiding. He opened his mouth but didn't get a chance to say anything because his wife, wearing a sparkly purple dress, lilac wings, and a cupcake tiara on her head, walked into the room carrying a sugar plum cake and singing "Happy Birthday." They all joined in, laughing when Evie squealed with delight and grabbed two fistfuls of cake. Which she promptly tried to shove in her father's mouth.
            Cat's mother and her stepfather retrieved the cake while Skye attempted to cleanup Evie and Ethan. Grayson leaned into Cat. "Why is she dressed like that?"
            "She's the Sugar Plum Cake Fairy."
            "Of course she is," he said, looking like he thought he'd fallen down the rabbit's hole.
            "Madison came up with the idea. She's a silent partner in the Sugar Plum Bakery. Grace's cake is pretty famous now," Cat explained.
            "Because it comes with its own fairy?" he asked with a glint of amusement in his pale-blue eyes.
            "No, because the wishes in the chocolate sugarplum come true. Maybe you'll get one," she said, nodding at the piece of cake her mother had just handed him.
            "Other than some time alone with you tonight, I got my wish, love."
            She kissed the underside of his stubbled jaw. "Me too."
            "Make mine a big one, Mommsy," Chloe called from where she sat between Nell and Easton on the couch. "I want to increase my chances for a sugarplum wish."
            Easton cast a nervous glance at Chloe, no doubt concerned he was the reason her sister wanted a wish. Nell must have been as nervous as Easton because, a few minutes later, she nudged Chloe and whispered in her ear. As soon as Chloe turned her head, Nell switched her piece of cake with Chloe's. "Would you look at that, I got a chocolate sugarplum," Nell announced seconds later.
            Chloe looked at her plate and frowned. "My piece of cake shrunk." She narrowed her eyes at Nell who was opening the sugarplum.
            The older woman pulled out a thin strip of paper.
            "What does it say, Aunt Nell?" Cat's stepfather, Paul McBride, asked.
            Lips pursed, Nell cast Chloe a sidelong glance. "That my match has been made in heaven, and I'll get my happy-ever-after very soon."
            Chloe released a disheartened sigh, then went back to her cake. A moment later she cried, "I've got one too!"
            Both Nell's and Easton's panicked gazes shot to Chloe.
            Her sister frowned as she read her sugarplum wish. "I think Grace made a mistake. This is a birthday wish for someone named PJ."
            Everyone was trying to figure out who PJ was when Nell snapped her fingers. "I know a PJ. Debbie talks about her all the time," she said, referring to the co-author for her Christmas, Colorado romance series. "Says she's one of the sweetest ladies she's ever met. Besides me, of course. PJ has a romance review blog, the Romance Dish, and always has nice things to say about our town and you kids. But I thought her birthday was in September, so it's a little late . . . Wait a minute, Cat and Grayson's book is releasing next September. We can--"
            "Am I ever going to get a book, Nell?" Chloe asked.
            Nell ignored her. "Come on, everybody. Let's take a picture for PJ by the tree. We'll send it along with a copy of Snowbound at Christmas."
            Ethan widened his eyes at Grayson and Cat, nodding at the rug.
            Grayson dug in his pocket, pulled out the sprig of mistletoe, and tossed it to her brother. While Ethan distracted his wife with a kiss, Grayson and Cat scooped up the bearskin rug. When they returned from throwing it out the patio doors, Annie, Ty, and Lily were kneeling on the floor making a sign. Her sister was hunting through the presents under the tree.
            Cat walked over to Chloe. "What are you doing?"
            "I bought Evie a fur coat for Christmas," she whispered, then stood up as everyone crowded around the tree. She brightened. "I'll put your name on the card instead of mine. Skye will forgive you. She likes you better."
            Before Cat had a chance to respond, Nell held up her cell phone and made a face. "We need one of those selfie sticks."
            "I have one," Chloe said and started to walk to away.
            "Of course you do," Easton muttered.
            Anxious to get back to canoodling with the man she loved, Cat grabbed her sister's gold lame top and reeled her in. "Let's just take the picture."
            They all squeezed together and smiled for the camera while Annie and Lily held up a sign that read Happy Birthday, PJ!
            Nell snapped the picture. She had to take three more before Chloe was satisfied with how she looked.
            When everyone finally began moving away from the tree, Cat grabbed Grayson's hand. They sprinted for the mudroom and headed outside, then stopped short. Her mother and Paul were sitting in their chairs, kissing under the mistletoe.
            Grayson looked down at her, then leaned back and opened the door. "Hey everybody, NORAD just announced that Santa's flying over Colorado. Come on out and see if we can spot him." Once they were all gathered outside looking up at the night sky, Grayson pulled Cat inside and locked the door behind them.

Awww... Thank you, Debbie! That was awesome!

Hi PJ! Thank you so much for asking me to share in your birthday celebrations. And happy birthday!!!  You’re one of my favorite people so I think they should declare PJ Day and make it a worldwide public holiday!  Anything less doesn’t do you justice.

And how very generous of you to make your birthday week a chance to give other people presents! Perhaps we should make PJ Day, PJ month!!!

My present for PJ and her Romance Dish gals is a sneak peek at my new novella A Pirate for Christmas which I’m currently writing and plan to release on 1st November. This will be the first
We do love our pirates!
time my dashing buccaneer Rory (who isn’t really a pirate, but a heroic captain of the Royal Navy) will appear in public. The new Lord Channing is very much looking forward to dancing a jig with PJ at her birthday party.

And my, don’t you just love a man in uniform?

Here’s the blurb:

Pursued by the pirate…
Bess Farrar might be an innocent village miss from an isolated corner of wildest Northumberland, but she knows enough about the world to doubt Lord Channing’s motives when he kisses her the very day they meet. After all, local gossip insists that before this dashing rake became an earl, he sailed the Seven Seas as a ruthless pirate.

Bewitched by the vicar’s daughter…
Until he unexpectedly inherits a title, unswervingly honorable Scotsman Rory Beaton has devoted his adventurous life to the Royal Navy. But all bets are off after he meets spirited Bess Farrar. Now this daring mariner will do whatever it takes to convince the lovely, headstrong lassie to launch herself into his arms and set sail into the sunset.

A Christmas marked by mayhem.
Wooing his headstrong lady, the new Earl of Channing finds himself embroiled with matchmaking villagers, an eccentric vicar, mistaken identities, a snowstorm, scandal, and a rascally donkey. Life at sea was never this exciting. The gallant captain’s first landlocked Christmas promises confusion, highjinks, danger, and passion – and a breathtaking chance to win the love of a lifetime.

And here’s the exclusive excerpt.

When vicar’s daughter, Bess Farrar beards the elusive new lord of the manor in his library at Preston Abbey to obtain permission to borrow Daisy the donkey for the annual nativity play, she has no idea what fate has in store:

That lush mouth, a promise of passion if Rory had ever seen one, set in a mutinous line, and she regarded him from across the room like a strange  and potentially dangerous new species. “You’re a very unusual man, Lord Channing.”

He smiled at this outspoken lassie with utter delight. “You have no idea, Miss Farrar.”

“Is it because you’re a pirate?”

For a moment there, he’d felt in control of the situation. The feeling had been fleeting. He stopped on his way to the library door and stared at her in astonishment. “What on earth did you say?”

She looked slightly shamefaced and made an apologetic gesture with one hand. “I’m sorry. Perhaps you don’t like people to mention your former occupation.”

“My former occupation,” he repeated very slowly. “As a pirate.”

“The story’s all over the village.”

“Aye?”

“You must have expected people to talk about you. And given you’ve been such a recluse since your arrival a month ago, it’s inevitable that rumors are flying.”

“Inevitable rumors.” Rory paused. “That I’m a pirate.”

She studied him and devil take her, understanding filled her lovely face. “Seeing you were free to take up the title, I imagine that you’ve reformed.”

“I wouldn’t be too sure about that.”

She eyed him uncertainly, but plowed on. He commended her determination. “There’s no need to feel embarrassed about your past crimes, my lord. Here at Preston Wyck, we tend to take people as we find them.”

“Is that right?”

“Yes.” Her tone firmed. “When we do find them.”

He sighed and ran his hand through his hair. “You’re about to start nagging again. I feel it in my piratical bones.”

~~~~~~~~~~
As you can probably tell, I’m having nearly as much fun writing this as I’d have at a birthday party for PJ! (and PJ is having a whole lot of fun reading it!)
Because A Pirate for Christmas is currently a lot of handwriting in a notebook, I can’t offer that particular story as today’s prize. Instead, I’ll pick two people from the commenters and they’ll win Kindle downloads of both my other 2015 novellas,Three Proposals and a Scandal and The Seduction of Lord Stone
Giveaway is international including North America. So to make it clear, today’s prize is 2 x 2 novellas! Good luck!
So let’s talk pirates! Do you have a favorite pirate in film or fiction? I’ve got to admit a fondness for that rascally Aussie Errol Flynn who was extremely dashing swinging from the rigging in Captain Blood.
And PJ, wishing you smooth sailing for the coming year and a fabulous birthday to launch your voyage!
Thank you, Anna! Having you here to help me celebrate means a lot to me.
Readers, in addition to Anna's giveaway, I'm also giving away a package of books from my prize stash! (U.S. only)
Be sure to check out Anna's new novellas below. I loved both of them!
For this reckless widow, love is the most dangerous game of all.
Caroline, Lady Beaumont, arrives in London seeking excitement after ten dreary years of marriage and an even drearier year of mourning. PJ's Birthday Bash - - Elizabeth Michels
I'm delighted to welcome Elizabeth Michels to my birthday week celebration! Not only is Elizabeth a woman who sparkles with wit and charm, just like her stories, but she is also another September 20th birthday sister. Julie Anne and Elizabeth both share my birthday. That's just all kinds of awesome! Elizabeth's next series, The Spare Heirs kicks off March 1, 2016 with the release of The Infamous Heir. I can't wait!
Elizabeth is the award-winning author of the Tricks of the Ton series and the upcoming Spare Heirs Series.  She grew up on a Christmas tree farm in rural South Carolina. After tip-toeing her way through school with her focus on ballet steps and her nose in a book, she met a boy and followed him a thousand miles away from home to Kansas City, Missouri. They spent their summers visiting his family in Middlesbrough, England soaking up culture, history and a few pints along the way.  Elizabeth attended Park University where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA in Interior Design.
Elizabeth now spends her days creating plots and concocting characters at her home in a small lake-side town in North Carolina. When she is not typing as fast as human movement will allow, she is caring for her husband and little boy. Elizabeth Michels is a lover of happily-ever-afters; whether in her writing life or in her home life, she spends her days with one word on her lips--love.  She invites you to read her stories, get lost and enjoy.  www.elizabethmichels.com
Happy Birthday from THE REBEL HEIR and Elizabeth Michels
Bristol, England
1817
“All you have to do is blow out this candle,” Ash said, producing one of the small tapers from his pocket with a flourish and a smile just as he always did.
Whether he was selling love potions to ladies or investment opportunities to gentlemen, a smile and some showmanship always helped matters along.  And matters needed to be helped along if he was to be on the road out of town tonight.  He glanced to the clock on the drawing room mantle.  Dinner had already been a lengthy affair, but he hadn’t been able to refuse the invitation with so many local gentry gathered in one place for the night.
“That’s all?” One of the ladies who had gathered around him asked, her eyes wide in disbelief…or perhaps that was anticipation.  It was difficult to tell when she wore such thick spectacles.  “I’ll look young forever?”  She added in a soft dream-like voice.
“Is it a magic candle?” Another lady asked as she stepped closer to investigate.  Her gaze was trained on the small piece of wax he held between his fingers.
“Some believe so, my lady.” He spoke only to her although five other ladies leaned in to hear every word.  “I discovered the secrets of the flames of Claughbania when I was on a distant isle.  The women there were all young and beautiful—much like present company.”
He paused to scan the group, noticing the round of blushes just before several fans were put into motion.  “I lived with the native people for three months in quite rustic conditions, everyday asking for their secret to everlasting youth.  And every day I was denied the answers I sought.  Until finally, one long, sleepless night, I went for a walk and found a man sitting before a fire.  He was an elder and he shared with me the very candles I have with me today.”
He looked into each of their faces, waiting to continue his story for dramatic effect and taking in their believing looks of awe.  That was when he caught sight of the dark haired gentleman across the room he’d met at dinner.  That man was traveling through town just like Ash, only St. James was from London.  One day, Ash would return to London as well, but certainly not any time soon.  St. James was watching him with a thoughtful gleam in his eye.  Everything about that man screamed mysterious and that was coming from someone who was currently selling candles of eternal youth to a group of hopeful ladies in a stranger’s drawing room.
Ash held the candle up as he continued.  “The wax was melted in the flames of Claughbania- a vicious volcano on the isle said to hold the spirit of a beautiful Greek goddess.  The wick, well that’s a secret I swore to keep forever.  If I told you, I would be putting my own life at risk.”
“Oh dear! Don’t do that Lord Crosby!” One lady cried even as she batted her lashes at him.
“I agree,” another lady added.  “You can’t endanger yourself in such a manner.  What would we do without you?”
“I appreciate your concern,” Ash said with a grin.  “Now, as it happens, I have only six of these candles left in my possession and for five pounds one could be yours.  But you must purchase it tonight.”
“Why tonight?”
Ash lowered his voice as if telling a grave secret.  “It must be extinguished by the light of a waning moon.”
“Oh, that is interesting.”
“Isn’t the moon tonight waxing?”  Ash heard a deeper voice ask.
He looked up to see St. James.  The man had moved across the room to lean on the mantle only a few steps away.  Ash tensed, but didn’t allow his annoyance to show in his face.  “That’s what I said—the light of a waxing moon.”
He lowered his gaze back to the ladies who surrounded him, determined to finish the business that brought him here this evening.  “Eternal beauty could be yours tonight.  Imagine looking young forever.”
“I’ll take one,” one lady demanded.
“As will I.”
“Thank you for your business,” he murmured as he passed around the candles and lined his pockets with their pin money, ignoring St. James who was watching the transaction with interest rather than stopping it.  He didn’t know what that man was about, but the faster he left this place, the more at ease he would be.  He smiled down at the last lady as he handed her the small candle.  “You’ll wake tomorrow with the shining looks of a twenty year old.”
“Thank you, Lord Crosby.”
“Anything for you ladies.  And happy birthday.”  He nodded to their hostess for the evening before moving away, finally able to shoot St. James with the glare he’d kept hidden for the last ten minutes.
“The Flames of Claughbania?” St. James asked in a whisper as he followed Ash across the room.  “If your brothers ever discover you used the good name of Claughbane to sell candles you purchased in the next village over…”
Ash spun on his heel to face the man.  He’d buried his past long ago and had never looked back.  How did this man know?  Bluff—that was the only way out of this alive.  “They’re candles of eternal youth.”
“Clearly.  And if your brothers ever hear of this they will burn you alive in the volcano you just invented.”  St. James’ voice was low enough not to be overheard, which coincidentally made the man sound lethal.  Perhaps he was lethal—to a man like Ash anyway.
“How do you know of my family?” Ash ground out through teeth clinched into some form of a smile.
“I know a great many things, Mr. Ash Claughbane of the Isle of Man.  You’re the youngest of four and your eldest brother recently inherited a dukedom.  Yet you spend your time…”  St. James broke off with a glance over his shoulder to the ladies still gathered near the fireplace.
“If my brother sent you, you can save your speech about being honorable.”
“No one sends me anywhere,” St. James corrected.
Ash studied him for a second before asking, “Who are you?”
“If you’re ever in London, come see me.” St. James slid a calling card into Ash’s hand.  There printed in black embossed type was The Spare Heirs’ Society with an address printed below.
“What is The Spare…”  Ash began but when he looked up, St. James was already moving toward the door.
London and a society of any sort?  Ash had been on his own too long to be interested in that.  Yet he found himself following after St. James and stuffing the card into his pocket.  Perhaps it was time to return to London after all…
Happy Birthday, PJ! Do you know where we could find some candles of eternal youth for our birthday cakes this year?
