Tour Review - - Cinderella and the Scarred Viscount

Cinderella and the Scarred Viscount

An imperfect proposal…
But a perfect match?

Major James Rossington, Viscount Austerfield, survived Waterloo, but can he survive the season as London’s most eligible bachelor? Convinced his battle scars make him unlovable, and to escape society’s matchmakers, Ross proposes a wedding in name only to shy, sensible Carenza Bettridge. Liberated from her cruel stepmother and bullying half sisters, she blossoms into a confident, altogether desirable woman. He promised Carenza a convenient marriage but inconveniently finds himself wanting more…

PJ's Thoughts:

This was my first book by Sarah Mallory but, after reading Cinderella and the Scarred Viscount, I will definitely be checking out her other titles. This marriage-of-convenience, Cinderella-themed historical romance is one I enjoyed.

Mallory's vibrantly-depicted, fully-developed characters come to life on the pages of this book. I felt an immediate affection for Carenza that never wavered. I admired her kindness in the face of the years of mistreatment from her step-mother and half-sisters but also cheered her evolution as she slowly gained confidence and began to take control of her life.

Ross's evolution is also an important part of this couple's journey. I thought his PTSD was realistically portrayed throughout the story, adding depth and complexity to his character. Also, I appreciated the slow burn of his relationship with Carenza, moving their journey forward at a gradual, realistic pace with no quick and easy, fairy-tale solutions. By the time they reached the conclusion of their journey, I was fully convinced of their mutual love and confident of their future together. Thanks to the author for the endearing epilogue that confirmed my wishes for these two...and the others.

The villains of the piece were as vibrantly depicted as the main characters, only in a negative, I'd-like-to-throw-you-off-the-nearest-cliff, kind of way. Mallory gave me protagonists I could love and antagonists to despise in equal measure.

If you enjoy characters who not only survive what life has thrown at them but triumph over adversity, finding love and happiness in the process, give Cinderella and the Scarred Viscount a try.

How Not to Chaperon a Lady
by Virginia Heath
The Talk of the Beau Monde - Book 3

His childhood nemesis…

…is the woman he can’t resist!

Chaperoning Charity Brookes while she’s on a singing tour should be easy for Griffith Philpot—he’s spent his whole life sparring with her over her flighty ways! But as he discovers that she’s much more than the impetuous girl he thought he knew, a passion ignites between them… Sharing a steamy kiss leaves him torn—he’s supposed to be responsible for guarding her virtue!

PJ's Thoughts:

The final book in Heath's The Talk of the Beau Monde trilogy pairs youngest Brookes sister, Charity with her long-time nemesis, Griffith Philpot, older brother of Charity's best friend. I've enjoyed Charity's growth arc over the course of this series. She showed glimpses of hidden layers in the second book, The Marquess Next Door that made me think there might be more to her than readers had been shown. In this third book, Heath begins to unravel Charity's layers, allowing us to see the layers that make her a more complete, and complex, character than she had seemed. It was enjoyable to watch her evolve.

Griff, on the other hand, seemed stuck in a rut, both in the way he lived his life and his opinions of Charity. Even when things began to warm between them, he still treated her with condescension and disdain. I wanted to see more advancement of their communication and understanding, more of an equal footing between them. Griff does eventually come around but not before many hurtful things are said and done. It takes a monumental grovel to make amends and it takes pretty much the entire book to get there.

I was satisfied with the conclusion of this story, and I did enjoy reading it, but I didn't love it the way I did books one and two. Still, I do enthusiastically recommend this trilogy and if you enjoy an angst-filled, enemies-to-lovers romance, with plenty of snappy dialogue and friction, give How Not to Chaperon a Lady a try.

Charity is an up and coming opera singer. Do you enjoy opera?

A dashing new neighbor…

 Temptation on her doorstep!

To avoid an unwanted suitor at a ball, Hope Brookes asks another gentleman to rescue her. He obliges—with a surprisingly passionate kiss! He's revealed as her sinfully handsome new neighbor, Lucius, Marquess of Thundersley, and they forge a friendship over their balconies. It’s refreshing that Lucius is more interested in her writer dreams than her looks, so why can’t she stop thinking about that kiss?

PJ's Thoughts:

I've been looking forward to Hope's story since meeting her in her sister's book, The Viscount's Unconventional Lady. (And, let me tell you, this is one very unconventional Regency family!) She immediately captured my attention with her love of gothic fiction, determination to be a published novelist, pithy set-downs of men who can't see beyond her impressive bosom, and feelings of not living up to the talents and accomplishments of the rest of her family. I immediately wanted to be her friend and that feeling only intensified as I read her story.

Luke is one of my favorite heroes this year. I loved his kindness, his humor, his protective nature (maybe not quite so protective but reasons are explained and understandable) and his respect for Hope's intelligence and career dreams. I loved the friendship they formed (those late night balcony-to-balcony conversations - sigh), the chemistry that sizzled between them, the desire he held in control and the consent that was always foremost in their interactions. I was firmly in Hope's corner when the major "black moment" misunderstanding occurred but, considering past events in his life, I understood why he reacted as he did. Didn't like it, but understood it, appreciated his full acceptance of the blame when he finally figured out what he had done, and love, love, loved the consequences for the  person responsible for orchestrating that black moment. What a visual! 😊

Virginia Heath has become one of my favorite historical romance authors. I adore her fully-formed characters, sparkling banter, effervescent humor, depth of emotion, and willingness to explore difficult topics (discussed freely today) while keeping them historically accurate. I especially appreciated how she handled the painful and difficult past of Luke's mother, what had happened to her in the past, and the present-day impact on both Maria and Luke, with sensitivity and truth.

The Marquess Next Door stands well on its own though I also loved oldest sister Faith's story in The Viscount's Unconventional Lady and highly recommend that as well (link to my review). Meanwhile, youngest sister, Charity, showed surprising, and well-hidden, depths in book two that have me eager for her turn to find love in book three, How Not to Chaperon a Lady. That one is scheduled to be released September 28th.

CW: Postpartum depression, attempted suicide (off page - discussed after the fact)

The notorious viscount

And the most gossiped-about lady…After years as a diplomat in the Napoleonic Wars, Lord Eastwood is reluctant to return to London society. His scandalous divorce has made him infamous, not to mention cantankerous! To halt the rumor mill, he should marry a quiet noblewoman—instead it’s bold, vibrant artist Faith Brookes who’s caught his attention. They are the least suitable match, so why is he like a moth to a flame?

PJ's Thoughts:

Are you reading Virginia Heath? I discovered her Harlequin Historical Romances in 2019 and have been happily gobbling them up ever since.

The Viscount's Unconventional Lady is her newest book and, like others of hers that I've read, proved remarkably difficult to put down. Faith and Piers are immensely sympathetic and likeable characters in whom I quickly became invested. I enjoyed their slow-burn evolution from adversaries who each (erroneously) pre-judge the other to a tentative friendship, mutual respect, desire, and, eventually, love. Their journey is filled with witty banter, genuine affection, unexpected revelations, and triumph over those who have wronged them. Heath imbues them both with vividly depicted layers that bring them to life, leaving the reader feeling as though these are actual people rather than characters in a book. Contributing to that feeling is the fact that both Faith and Piers have careers to which they are dedicated, she as an artist attempting to step out from her famous father's shadow and he as a "dull and boring" diplomat (his description) whose job is anything but inconsequential. I enjoyed the specific details Heath included that offered insight into the intricacies of their lives and careers.

The secondary characters who surround the main couple are anything but boring wallpaper. In fact, Piers' young niece steals every scene she's in, Faith's flamboyantly artistic parents are larger than life, and her equally intriguing younger sisters appear to be destined for books of their own.

The Viscount's Unconventional Lady launches a new series so if you're new to Virginia Heath's historical romances, this book would be a great place to start. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Marriage…
To the highest bidder
Lady Lydia Barton cannot seem to avoid Owen Wolfe since he’s returned after being wrongly transported for stealing her family’s jewels! But Lydia has more pressing problems, like her impending arranged marriage. Until Owen makes her father a counteroffer for her hand. Is Owen purely after her society connections, or dare Lydia hope that the charming stable boy she once loved is still within her ruthless, wealthy new husband?

PJ's Thoughts:

I love a good enemies to lovers story. When the enemies were once young lovers, then separated with each believing they'd been betrayed by the other, and brought back together years later for a second chance? Well, that's even better!

One of the things I most enjoy about Virginia Heath's writing is her ability to develop characters. Once again, she fills this book with well-rounded characters who leap from the pages and elicit emotion, both good and bad. I warmed to Owen quickly, probably because it's immediately apparent that he was the wronged party in the events of the past but also because he's just a really good guy. Lydia was another story. But that's okay. It gave her good opportunity for growth as Heath slowly guided these two in their journey of discovery and, by the end, I was firmly in her corner.

I liked that Heath gave Owen and Lydia time to gradually come to know one another as adults, while rediscovering the qualities they had admired when younger, and opening their eyes to what could be in the future...if they're willing to face the truth, and risk their hearts. I grew impatient with Lydia several times but as the truth of her family, and her life, was unveiled I began to understand her actions better - she was dealt one horrific hand when it comes to families - and I cheered at the way she dispensed justice in the end.

I adored Owen's business partner and his family. What a wonderful group of secondary characters who bring comic relief and offer pivotal advice to both Owen and Lydia. I can't imagine this book without them.

Once again, Virginia Heath has written a character-driven, historical romance with plenty of conflict, humor, heart, and a sigh-worthy happy ending, that kept me eagerly turning pages from start to finish.

His heart is a fortress.

And she’s trespassing! After losing all he holds dear in a horrific fire, Max Aldersley, Earl of Rivenhall, shuns the world—until he catches Effie Nithercott digging holes on his estate! He banishes the intrepid archaeologist and the unsettled feelings she rouses within him. But she returns even more determined and infuriatingly desirable than before! He wonders just how deep she’s prepared to dig—so far she’ll reach the man beneath his scars?

PJ's Thoughts:

I only discovered Virginia Heath within the past year but I've become an enthusiastic fan of her writing. I adored Effie and Max, and their unconventional journey to love is my favorite of her books to date.

Effie is a brilliant, determined woman who has learned through experience that she's probably destined to spend her life alone. Men are typically scared off by her enormous intellect and unwillingness to keep it hidden. In fact, her brain rarely quiets. Neither does her mouth. In modern times, she'd most likely be diagnosed as ADHD. She's driven to uncover the archeological secrets beneath the ground of the Earl of Rivenhall's estate and frustrated by the men of science who refuse to take her seriously simply because she's a woman. She's also equal parts frustrated and fascinated by Max, the reclusive new earl who keeps trying to banish her from his estate.

The tragic detour in Max's life was sudden and devastating, leaving him grappling with deep physical and emotional wounds. Not only is he mourning the loss of his beloved career but he's also learned to view himself as a scarred monster, unworthy of love. I wanted to toss his former betrothed off the nearest cliff for making him feel that way. Effie is, of course, exactly what he needs in his life but we all know it's going to be a rocky road before he comes to that realization. The journey is both endearing and humorous, and had me laughing out loud more than once while also wiping away a few tears.

The banter between these two is an absolute delight. I love how Effie challenges Max with dogged determination that ever so slowly begins to bring him out of the darkness and back to life, proving to him that he's worthy of being loved for exactly who he now is and that his dreams don't need to be cast aside. And, I love, love, love the grand gesture that Max uses to show Effie, and the world, that her brilliance should not only be accepted but celebrated. I turned the final page confident that these two are destined for a lifetime of adventure and love. And wishing I could tag along for the ride.

A reunion in Rome…Sparks an affair to remember!
Responsible widow Lilian Fairclough is persuaded to travel to Rome for a hard-earned break and to let down her hair! She’s surprised to be reunited with passionate, cynical Italian duke, Pietro Venturi. He reawakens her sensual side and intrigues her with glimpses of pain beneath his rakish surface. Enticed into a secret and temporary affair – what will happen once she returns home?

PJ's Thoughts:

I enjoy reading about characters at all stages of life but being a woman "of a certain age," I have to admit I do have a special fondness for a hero and heroine with a bit of seasoning. There is, after all, no expiration date on desire and romance. Both the hero and heroine in this book are past their 40th birthdays, widowed, and have no interest in marrying again. Lilian deeply loved her husband and had a wonderful marriage while Pietro, whose father forced him into an arranged marriage at a young age, has never loved. But both are still vibrant, sensual people and the attraction between them, immediate and fierce.

I love that Heath takes Lilian out of her English comfort zone and away from friends and family for whom she would have remained "proper." By setting the story in Italy, she allows Lilian to blossom, throwing off societal restrictions, and engaging in a glorious love affair under the Roman sun. While it was a joy to watch Lilian embrace the latent sensuality that had always been a hidden part of her, it was equally enjoyable to watch Pietro, a notorious playboy who has indulged his sensuality frequently, learn to gradually open himself to emotions of the heart.

The city of Rome features prominently in the story, with Heath bringing various parts of the ancient city alive through her descriptions. For someone who has visited multiple times, it was as if I was walking through ancient ruins and scenic hillsides along with the characters. For readers who have yet to visit Rome, it will make you want to book a ticket and pack your bags.

Pietro and Liliana's love story takes a leisurely path yet there was enough conflict, and growth, to hold my interest throughout. It can be read as a standalone, although references made to past events, and people, in Lilian's life left me wondering if there was more to learn about her character than what was included in this book. I began to question whether this book was part of a series and discovered that it, in fact, is the fourth book in a multi-author series with the first three books telling the stories of Lilian's three children. I enjoyed Lilian and the Irresistible Duke, and can recommend it as a standalone, but I have a feeling I might have had a deeper appreciation for Lilian's character, and the events that had brought her to this stage of her life, had I read the previous three books first which, after reading the epilogue, I am now inclined to do.

Do you enjoy heroes and heroines with a bit more life experience?

He’s got iron control…

But she might be his undoing!

Part of The King’s Elite: Haunted by Penny Penhurst’s courage on the witness stand, meticulous barrister Lord Hadleigh offers her a housekeeper position at his estate. Despite trying to stay detached, Hadleigh is charmed by her small child and surprised by how much he yearns for this proud woman! Can he break through his own—and Penny’s—barriers to prove he’s a man she can trust…and love?

My thoughts:

Lord Hadleigh certainly is determined! His heart is in the right place when he decides to anonymously provide financial assistance to the widow of the traitor he prosecuted, a woman the government has left destitute through no fault of her own. Secret events from his own past guide his actions. But, while his heart may be in the right place, his high-handed charity is neither wanted nor appreciated. The barrister is about to be schooled...by a woman who has lost everything, but gained so much more. Finally free of her abusive marriage, Penny is determined to make the most of her independence. Never again will she allow herself to be subjected to a man's control, or dependent upon his financial generosity. But, when both Penny and Hadleigh end up at Hadleigh's estate along with other members of The King's Elite, as preparations for the final smuggling trials draw near, walls slowly begin to crumble, a tentative friendship forms, and secrets are divulged. Will friendship develop into something more? Or will the emotional wounds from both of their pasts be too much to overcome?

Virginia Heath has worked her magic once again with this emotional, heart-tugging final story that brings The King's Elite series to a conclusion. While not as action-packed as previous books in the series, the emotional intensity of this one kept me invested in these characters from beginning to end. There's a poignant sweetness to their relationship, even with the powerful emotions - and stubbornness - at play and plenty of cheer-worthy moments as Penny begins to regain her sense of self-worth and control of her future. I especially enjoyed the humorous, enlightening, and motivating discussions between Penny and the other women staying at Hadleigh's estate. And, the middle-of-the-night scenes between Hadleigh and Penny's young son melted my heart.

Even though this is the final book in a series, it's told in such a way that someone new to The King's Elite should be able to enjoy it as a first book. However, if you're a fan of the series, you'll no doubt enjoy seeing all the couples brought back together and, especially, the "helpful" advice dispensed to both Penny and Hadleigh as they work their way through their relationship potholes. And the epilogue - OMG, I loved the epilogue! - is one of the best I've read in ages. It was the perfect way to bring Penny and Hadleigh, their journey, and the series to an end.

The Determined Lord Hadleigh has my enthusiastic recommendation. I'm excited to see what Virginia Heath has in store for readers next.

The Disgraceful Lord Gray
A spy on a mission...Until he meets this heiress!

Miss Theodora Cranford's learned to keep her impetuous nature locked away. She won't be deceived by another man who can't see past her fortune. She wants an honourable, sensible sort - not a self-assured scoundrel like her new neighbour, Lord Gray. Although she's sure there's more to him than meets the eye...
But after that first captivating kiss, she's certainly left wanting more!

My thoughts:

This was my first book by Virginia Heath and I was thoroughly charmed. She pulls you into her world with witty dialog, sparkling banter, a credible mystery, and vibrantly depicted characters who come to life on the page.

Theodora and Gray are likable characters who have been molded by incidents in their youth. Both are rather set in their opinions as well as the life course they've charted. Of course, a chance meeting that leaves quite the impression changes everything. What follows is a flirtatious ebb and flow, a slow burning attraction, friendship, romance, and more. I enjoyed every step of their unconventional journey. The author does a good job of continually moving events forward, keeping me invested in the evolution of both characters and story. I solved the identity of the villain early on but there were still surprises revealed that caught me off guard. I love when an author can accomplish that.

Heath also surrounds our hero and heroine with a vividly portrayed secondary cast who bring humor, introspection, and villainy to the story. I especially enjoyed Thea's widowed friend, Harriet, who is determined Thea live life to the fullest, and Gray's dog, Trefor. You can learn a lot about people by how they treat, and are treated by, their dog.

The Disgraceful Lord Gray is the third book in Heath's The King's Elite series but stands on its own. However, now that I've discovered this author's sparkling wit, you can be sure I'll be seeking out the first two books in the series and I'm already looking forward to book four, The Determined Lord Hadleigh, due to be released in July.
