by Sarah MacLean

She lives for passion.

Bold, impulsive, and a magnet for trouble, Juliana Fiori is no simpering English miss. She refuses to play by society's rules: she speaks her mind, cares nothing for the approval of the ton, and can throw a punch with remarkable accuracy. Her scandalous nature makes her a favorite subject of London's most practiced gossips . . . and precisely the kind of woman The Duke of Leighton wants far far away from him.

He swears by reputation.

Scandal is the last thing Simon Pearson has room for in his well-ordered world. The Duke of Disdain is too focused on keeping his title untainted and his secrets unknown. But when he discovers Juliana hiding in his carriage late one evening—risking everything he holds dear—he swears to teach the reckless beauty a lesson in propriety. She has other plans, however; she wants two weeks to prove that even an unflappable duke is not above passion.

Review - - Taken by the Prince

Taken by the Prince
By Christina Dodd
Publisher:  Signet
Release Date:  April 5, 2011

Christina Dodd returns to the fictional European mountain country of Moricadia to bring readers a captivating tale rich in intrigue, adventure and bold sensuality.

England 1847

What madness made her experience an affinity to a bastard driven by some unexplained rage to lust?

It was as if she understood him. As if she, Victoria Cardiff, sensible and prosaic, had found the one mate who would allow her to be the woman she truly was…

Being a school friend and confidante of his younger half-sister, Miss Victoria Cardiff had, of course, heard the story about Raul Lawrence being a secret king in exile but, being a practical miss, she had dismissed it for the fairy tale it obviously was. After all, the man is the bastard son of an English lord. True, Grimsborough had adopted him and made him his heir but that hardly made him a king! When she finally meets the arrogant and darkly attractive man at his sister’s birthday party she finds herself drawn to him and, when they share a passionate kiss on a moonlit balcony, she is enchanted, as is he...until he ruins it all by apologizing for the kiss. They part in anger, he to complete his secret mission to Moricadia and she to hone her skills at the Distinguished Academy of Governesses, seemingly never to meet again, but three years later…

Since being sent to live with his cold, cruel father in England at the young age of eleven, everything Saber “Raul” Lawrence has learned has been in pursuit of one goal: to return to Moricadia and free his people from the de Guignards, the murderous usurpers who stole the throne from his family. When he finally earns his freedom at the age of twenty-one, he leaves England behind and returns to the country of his heart to begin his secret campaign to restore the throne of Moricadia to its rightful rulers. Three years later, everything is moving along according to schedule when a governess traveling with an English family arrives in Moricadia and threatens to undermine the entire revolution with a careless slip of the tongue, leaving Saber with only one option: kidnap the woman who had enchanted him on that long-ago night and hold her captive until the throne is recaptured.  And that's when the fun really begins...

Saber is confident in his ability to lead his people as well as his ability to control Victoria but the young girl of his memories has grown into a smart, savvy woman who more than holds her own.  When Saber offers her the job of his mistress, she "gifts" him with a head butt to the face.  When he assigns her the task of teaching his adult relatives manners, she instead begins teaching the children English...and learning Moricadian from them in return.  She challenges Saber at every turn and earns not only his affection but his respect, as well as the respect of his people.  Victoria is not a heroine who waits passively on the sidelines of the revolution.  Two of my favorite scenes in the book are how she handles the unwanted attentions of Saber's cousin (and rival for the crown) and then maneuvers a confrontation between the two men to her desired conclusion.  Victoria is obviously a woman who can stand on her own and I adored her!

Saber, on the other hand, is one of my favorite Dodd heroes:  an arrogant alpha male; confident, sensual and  secure in the knowledge that his way is the right way...until he's knocked to his knees by his heroine.  I love the resilience of the young Saber in the face of his father's cruelty, the adult man's willingness to protect and provide for his people, his determination to free them and his understanding and acceptance of the woman Victoria is meant to be.  But, like many alpha heroes, he's a bit late in understanding just how much his heroine means to him and must execute some very creative and satisfying groveling in order to achieve his happy ending. I liked that too! *g*

Christina Dodd is one of my "go to" authors.  Though I enjoy some of her books more than others, I can always count on her for bold heroes, intrepid heroines, fast-moving plots, sizzling sensuality and wry humor.  Taken by the Prince delivers on all counts.  Add in a fascinating secondary cast (I so hope we'll see more of Saber's sisters in future books!), dastardly villains, a rugged, mountainous landscape and a life or death struggle to save a country and its people and you have a book that I've already read twice and will be re-visiting time and time again. I highly recommend Taken by the Prince.

Review -- The Chase

The Chase
Fast Track -- Book 4
By Erin McCarthy
Publisher: Berkley
Release Date: April 5, 2011

Years ago, after confessing her dreams of becoming a NASCAR driver to her boyfriend, Kendall Holbrook and Evan Monroe abruptly broke up. Now ten years later, Kendall has finally made it after working her butt off. And of course, a woman driver in the all male cup series is BIG news. If she wants to stay there, she needs to continue to work hard, which means avoiding Evan Monroe at all costs. But when they’re forced to work together, Kendall has a hard time keeping Evan from getting under her skin.

Evan Monroe never had to prove himself in order to be a driver as his entire family is in the business. But lately his racing season has been downright dismal. To top it all off, his huge sponsor drops him like a hot brick. The only one that gives him an offer is Untamed Deodorant for women and men . . . and he has to share the sponsorship with Kendall. Since he never got over her, Evan is perfectly fine with the scenario as it will allow him to pursue Kendall in earnest and hopefully win back her heart. But can they be together and still compete in the chase?

I am a big fan of this series, despite the fact that I don’t follow NASCAR. I enjoyed this story a bit better than the last book, though the second, Hard and Fast, is still my favorite. I was rooting for Kendall both on and off the track. Her family has never really accepted her desire to race since they consider it a man’s sport, and despite the fact that she wanted it, she sometimes finds it hard to fit in.

Kendall was used to straddling two worlds, being forced to decide at parties if she should align herself with the women, who were wives and mothers, or with the men, who were her co-workers. But she was tired of it. She wanted to belong somewhere, and her gut, her heart, kept telling her that place was with Evan.

When it comes to Evan, racing is in his family’s blood. His father is a former driver, his brother Elec races and his sister Eve (who I desperately hope Ms. McCarthy will write a story for!) is the PR rep for the brothers. It was always expected that Evan would race and he always has, so it was enjoyable watching him break from tradition to make difficult decisions and go after what he wanted. I really appreciate that Ms. McCarthy didn’t allow Kendall and Evan to dwell on the big misunderstanding from their past. They got over it quickly, which showed them to be both forgiving and intelligent characters. And their chemistry? Scorching! I almost broke a sweat reading the love scenes. You don’t need to be a fan of NASCAR to enjoy The Chase . . . just a fan of fun, sexy contemporaries!

Guest Review - - Texas Blue

Texas Blue
By Jodi Thomas
Publisher: Berkley
Publication Date: April 5, 2011

Texas Ranger Duncan McMurray fears that Emily, Rose, and Beth, the three cousins with whom he grew up on Whispering Mountain Ranch are headed for spinsterhood. Forced to play matchmaker, he selects three men to visit the ranch and court his cousins. When Duncan joins a vastly outnumbered force of Rangers on a mission to destroy a band of cattle thieves headquartered just over the Mexican border, his friend Lewton Paterson, a mongrel gambler with a dream of family and a respectable life, takes the place of a blue-blooded suitor.

Emily McMurray, who still carries the scars of life before she became a McMurray, has no interest in the strangers visiting Whispering Mountain. She persuades a friend to take her place and disguises herself as Em, a tough ranch hand devoid of feminine wiles. To Lewt’s surprise, he finds himself more interested in the unsociable Em in her masculine garb than in the three lovely McMurray sisters. Humor and pathos blend in the retreat-advance-retreat moves as these two characters come to know one another.

Duncan’s adventures in Mexico are interwoven with the story of Em and Lewt. Unlike Lewt, Duncan is the classic Western hero, a man of honor, courage, resourcefulness, and a deep love for his home. When he finds himself wounded and helpless, the dangers he confronts are real. I expect that we will learn more about him and the mysterious woman-child he befriends in a later book.

When news arrives at the Whispering Mountain that Duncan has not returned from Mexico with the Rangers, Lewt and Em, who can ride and shoot as well as any man, join the rescue mission to bring Duncan home. On a journey filled with danger, passion, and revelations, Lewt and Em learn to trust their hearts and their dreams. The mix of toughness and vulnerability that characterizes both Em and Lewt makes them sympathetic characters. Em’s distrust of men and Lewt’s sense of unworthiness have roots deep in their respective childhoods, and watching their relationship move from prickly strangers to cautious friends to lovers will delight readers.

The ending did seem rushed to me. I liked the conclusion, but I felt that I arrived there too soon. The speed with which the story moved from rising action to unraveling was disconcerting. This feeling plus some secondary characters who served little purpose kept the book from being a five-star read for me.

This is the fifth book in Jodi Thomas’s popular Whispering Mountain series. It follows Texas Rain, Travis McMurray’s story; Texas Princess,Tobin McMurray’s story; Tall, Dark, and Texan, Teagen McMurray’s story; and The Lone Texan, Sage McMurray’s story. Fans of the earlier books will enjoy seeing Duncan (Duck, the boy from an outlaw camp adopted by Travis McMurray in Texas Rain) and Emily (the eldest of Jessie Barton’s three daughters who won Teagen McMurray’s heart even before he married their mother in Tall, Dark, and Texan) all grown up. But it’s not necessary to have read the first four books to appreciate this one. Thomas provides the details readers need about Emily’s early life, and the novel works well as a stand-alone. Texas Blue is the same kind of emotional, high tension tale as the first generation books. If you like Westerns, you’ll fall under the spell of the McMurrays and their Texas land. If you’ve never tried a Western romance, this book might be a good place to start. I’m hoping this will be the first in another McMurray quartet. I’m not only eager to see Duncan get an HEA, but I want to know what happens to Emily’s sisters.

Guest Review - - Midnight's Wild Passion

Midnight’s Wild Passion
By Anna Campbell
Publisher: Avon
Release Date: April 26, 2011

A notorious rake with an ancient name and enviable wealth, Nicholas Challoner, Marquess of Ranelaw raises eyebrows and ruffles feathers when he appears at a debutante ball where he is as out of place as a tiger at a tea party. What the denizens of London’s ballrooms don’t know is that Ranelaw is a man ruthlessly set on revenge, a revenge that has been years in the making. Long ago Godfrey Demarest charmed Ranelaw’s young sister into surrendering her virginity and then abandoned her. Two decades later another innocent young woman, Demarest’s daughter, Cassandra, provides Ranelaw with the perfect instrument for his revenge. A ruined life for a ruined life is definitely the Marquess’s motto.

Ranelaw has no doubt of his ability to seduce his victim, but this lord who boasts of his ability to eradicate chaperones is unprepared for Miss Antonia Smith, companion to Cassie. Experience has taught Miss Smith more than she ever wanted to know about rakes. Disowned by her family and forced to assume a disguise of “irreproachable rectitude” for the past ten years, Antonia is determined to protect her charge from repeating the mistakes made by Lady Antonia Hilliard, the girl Antonia Smith once was. The battle is on. Ranelaw and Antonia are engaged in a duel of moves and counter moves, complicated by the growing attraction that threatens to destroy his perfect revenge and her carefully constructed identity.

I’ll admit up front that I am not a fan of revenge plots. Had I been less a fan of Anna Campbell, I might well have passed on this one for that reason. For several chapters, Ranelaw seemed more villain than hero. I was repulsed not only by his willingness to destroy the life of an innocent but also by the fact that he recognizes the heinousness of his own actions and yet is not deterred from his plan. The struggle between Ranelaw’s darker and better selves is powerful, and the outcome seems in question for much of the novel. Just when the reader thinks that love may redeem him, the rake resurfaces:

He’d stared into her eyes, dark with confusion and unwilling passion, and for one, stark, horrible instant, he’d wished to be that different man. He’d wished to be worthy of her.

Hell, no. he was perfectly happy with who he was. He had more freedom than anyone he knew. He took what he wanted and discarded it when he’d had his fill. His world held no limits.

To my surprise, I found myself as a reader seduced by Ranelaw’s guinea gold hair and shades-of-gray heart. Like Antonia, I came to realize that “a reluctant hero skulked inside the Marquess of Ranelaw.”

I did like Antonia immediately. Ms. Campbell is well-known for her hot, angst-filled heroes, but she is equally skilled at creating remarkable, courageous heroines. Antonia is such a heroine. Some of my favorite romance heroines are those whose deepest nature is at odds with the image they present to the world. I’m happy to add Antonia to the list.

The secondary characters are also memorable. Cassie is a dear—young, idealistic, and loyal, with a surprising streak of pragmatism that surfaces at a crucial moment. Cassie’s father and Antonia’s benefactor, Demarest, is also an exceptionally well-drawn character—a carelessly kind man and indulgent father, who is nonetheless shallow, selfish, and incapable of accepting responsibility for his actions. I’d love to see more of Cassie and of Antonia’s brother, Henry.

Although her new novel lacks the darkness of Ms. Campbell’s earlier, Regency noir stories, it has all the emotional intensity and sizzling love scenes that one expects in an Anna Campbell novel. It’s another AC keeper! If you are a reader who sticks to light-hearted romance, this book is not for you. But for those who love a passionate, poignant romance that shows the redemptive power of love, I highly recommend Midnight’s Wild Passion.
