The life Olivia Harper always dreamed of isn’t so dreamy these days. The 16-hour work days are unfulfilling and so are things with her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when she hears that her estranged mother, Juliet, has been seriously injured, Liv has no choice but to pack up her life and head home to beautiful Cape Sanctuary on the Northern California coast.

It’s just for a few months—that’s what Liv keeps telling herself. But the closer she gets to Cape Sanctuary, the painful memories start flooding back: Natalie, her vibrant, passionate older sister who downward-spiraled into addiction. The fights with her mother who enabled her sister at every turn. The overdose that took Natalie, leaving her now-teenaged daughter, Caitlin, an orphan.

As Liv tries to balance her own needs with those of her injured mother and an obstinate, resentful fifteen-year-old, it becomes clear that all three Harper women have been keeping heartbreaking secrets from one another. And as those secrets are revealed, Liv, Juliet, and
Caitlin will see that it’s never too late—or too early—to heal family wounds and find forgiveness.

PJ's Thoughts:

I've been reading RaeAnne Thayne's books since 2007 and she hasn't disappointed me yet. Whether it's contemporary romance or women's fiction, on a western cattle ranch or in a small, coastal California town, her characters always hold my attention and touch my heart.

In The Sea Glass Cottage, Thayne introduces readers to three generations of Harper women, all negotiating the emotional quagmire that the complications of life sometimes generate. They're not always easy to like, or understand, but their flaws make them all the more real and their growth all the more satisfying. The tangled complexity of their family secrets creates a compelling story that kept me engaged from beginning to end and wondering at several points just how, or if, Thayne would be able to not only bring love and happiness to each of them individually but also bring them together again as a family. She does, of course, but not without one heck of an emotional roller coaster ride first. I enjoyed every bit of it. I also enjoyed the three men (two men and a teen, actually), worthy heroes all, who each factor significantly in the lives of the Harper women. I'd happily take any one of them were I Liv, Caitlin, or Juliet.

If you're in the mood for a story of family secrets, grief, hope, second chances, romance, forgiveness, and love that will engage your emotions and deliver a satisfying happily ever after, I recommend RaeAnne Thayne's The Sea Glass Cottage.

Review - - Chasing Cassandra

Chasing Cassandra
by Lisa Kleypas
The Ravenels - Book 6

Everything has a price . . .
Railway magnate Tom Severin is wealthy and powerful enough to satisfy any desire as soon as it arises. Anything—or anyone—is his for the asking. It should be simple to find the perfect wife—and from his first glimpse of Lady Cassandra Ravenel, he’s determined to have her. But the beautiful and quick-witted Cassandra is equally determined to marry for love—the one thing he can’t give.
Everything except her . . .
Severin is the most compelling and attractive man Cassandra has ever met, even if his heart is frozen. But she has no interest in living in the fast-paced world of a ruthless man who always plays to win.
When a newfound enemy nearly destroys Cassandra’s reputation, Severin seizes the opportunity he’s been waiting for. As always, he gets what he wants—or does he? There’s one lesson Tom Severin has yet to learn from his new bride:
Never underestimate a Ravenel.
The chase for Cassandra’s hand may be over. But the chase for her heart has only just begun . . .

Santa says:
I must confess that I kept piling book upon book on my TBR pile before reading Chasing Cassandra by Lisa Kleypas. I really am not sure why. I told a friend that having plowed through that pile and, with a few stellar exceptions, what I read was mostly tepid to me. That is not to say that they weren’t hot enough but rather that they did not spark anything in me as a reader.

How could I have doubted you, Lisa Kleypas! She has always been one of my GO TO authors for more than 15 years! Chasing Cassandra is by no means a tepid romance book -far from it! THIS is a 5 star romance novel! I was engaged and all in from the very first pages to the very end!

First, let me say that I love the Ravanel family! I loved the references to all the interconnected families here, as well. What better vehicle than a wedding to reintroduce them all. That’s where we find Tom Severin, a wildly but calculatedly successful businessman attending the wedding of Pandora Ravenel to the Viscount St. Vincent. This is where his frozen heart stops at the sight of Pandora’s twin sister, Cassandra. Tom is a man who knows what he wants and sets off to pursue her. The emphatic NO that he gets from her cousin and his brother both is delivered in such a deadpan manner much as a dogged parent might respond to an equally dogged child. And that is when I laughed out loud.

Cassandra’s guardian, Devon Ravenel is best friends and business associates with Tom Severin. He knows how he operates and how he has no heart or room for love. Tom admits this. He only has five feelings which he acknowledges and love is not one of them. Dev knows that Cassandra wants and needs love, especially given how she was raised. Cassandra, for her part, cannot help noticing Tom as a more than handsome man and knows that his heart is not as frozen and useless as Tom thinks it is.

And so the chase is on, with Cassandra and a street urchin named Bazzle slowly but shortly melting Tom’s frozen heart. I wished this story could have gone on and on. I am adding this one to my keeper shelf alongside the rest of the Ravenels and my beloved Wallflower series.

Review - - Crush the King

Crush the King
By Jennifer Estep
Publisher: Harper Voyager
Release Date: March 17, 2020
Reviewed by Nancy

This concluding volume of Jennifer Estep’s Crown of Shards trilogy opens with Queen Everleigh (Evie) Blair of Bellona girding for a final confrontation with her nemesis, King Maximus of Morta. In the first book of the trilogy, Kill the Queen, he had her entire family assassinated to put his puppet on the throne. In the second book, Protect the Prince, his agents tried to kill a neighboring monarch and his son, who’re related to Evie’s lover, lightning magier and gladiator Lucas Sullivan.

Maximus and Evie have never met in person, but they’re about to. The annual multinational games known as the Regalia will soon begin. Custom dictates that the monarchs of participating countries attend. Before the games start, however, events lead Evie to believe she needs to change her approach, to be harder, sterner, and more assertive with her courtiers and her fellow monarchs.

One thing that makes this series so engaging is Evie’s evolution from a scared nobody, a minor blip on the royal family tree, to a confident gladiator and then to a queen. Nothing comes easily to her at any stage, and when she gained the throne in Kill the Queen, she knew she had no clue how to truly be a queen. Protect the Prince showed her growing into that role, learning the pitfalls and advantages while still not feeling she’d truly earned her crown. Throughout the other two books, she has slowly learned how to wield her own magic.

Crush the King brings this arc to fruition. Her new, more assertive approach is totally believable because of all that has gone before. So does her growth as a magier.

Evie goes to the Regalia knowing she may never get a better shot at Maximus. She plans to kill him during the games and knows he will also try to kill her.

The coming confrontation will involve courtly intrigue and various competitions. Evie has help preparing from her dancing instructor, Xenia, and the gladiators of the Black Swan troupe, including Lucas Sullivan, her consort. Part of the pleasure of reading any series is seeing familiar characters return, so it’s satisfying to see that Evie’s friends still have her back.

Her arch nemesis, Maeven, also returns. A magically gifted but illegitimate member of the Mortan royal family, she is her half brother’s top agent and assassin. Maeven’s story takes a twist here, one that allows Evie to up the stakes in the long game she has played with Maeven since her family was massacred.

The pace of the story generally moves well, with solid action sequences and hot, tender romance as well as intriguing strategy sessions. Still, I would’ve liked to get to the confrontation earlier and was tiring of the prep for it. I also had issues with two particular scenes farther into the book. In one, a confrontation occurs in Evie’s tent. I thought the guards were incredibly lax, probably standing far from the tent, not to notice the noise of the fight sooner. Once they do notice it and announce they’ll check on the queen, a lengthy conversation ensues before the guards arrive. That timing was hard to believe.

Later, in Evie’s final confrontation with Maximus, he threatens to do something that, in the circumstances, he has absolutely no way to do. He’s not stupid, and this threat feels out of place—even more so because nobody else notes that he can’t possibly do that.

These were my only issues with the book. As Protect the Prince did, Crush the King gives us a broader view of the story world. We explore the island of Fortuna and its crafty owners, the DiLucri family, who’re somewhat reminiscent of the Renaissance Medicis, and learn more about the magic in the world. I especially liked the magical birds known as strixes.

The ending involved a terrific twist that solves Evie’s problems in an unexpected but satisfying way. While Crush the King ties off this trilogy nicely, Estep also plants seeds for further trouble between the Mortan royal family and Evie.

Overall, I enjoyed this book tremendously despite my issues with a couple of things. I recommend it highly.

Excerpt from Can't Hurry Love

Before Drew could bicker and eventually cave in to feeding his sister, he heard Mims announce the next date being offered at the auction. “Lola Williams.”

Catcalls and hollers of appreciation practically raised the roof of Shaw’s Bar & Grill.

Lola stepped into the spotlight, wearing a shimmery white cocktail dress and high-heeled white sandals that weren’t made for walking. Her long brown hair fell in lustrous waves over her shoulders. She looked like an angel, until you saw the fire in her eyes.

Buy her, a voice in Drew’s head said, probably because he valued keeping the peace, and the expression on Lola’s face was anything but peaceful.

“I’ll tell them about me.” Lola grabbed the microphone from Mims. There was a Watch-Out-World edge to her voice. “I’m Randy Williams’s wife. He used to run Your Second Husband Handyman Service.”

The crowd quieted, either because they were stumped that a woman in the date auction claimed to be married or because they saw the wild look in her blue eyes and weren’t sure whether it was a good wild or a bad wild.

Bad. Definitely bad.

Drew swore and hopped off the bar stool, pushing his way through the crowd. Passing Paul, who was waving fifties in front of his face like a fan. Passing Jason, who was grinning up at Lola. Passing a cowboy who raised his glass in Lola’s direction and spilled beer on Drew’s arm.

Drew was only halfway to the stage when Lola said, “Randy’s dead, but I want to know who my husband was handy with besides me.”

The energy in the crowd shifted from wary to predatory, like a watchful cat who’d spotted an unsuspecting mouse and was preparing to play with it before moving in for the kill.

Lola was oblivious to the target being painted on her. “Randy was handy with another woman. Or maybe another man …” She looked bewildered by this statement, as if she couldn’t quite believe it herself.

Had she been drinking? Drew couldn’t tell. She didn’t slur her words. She hadn’t stumbled across the stage.

The men on the dance floor had been drinking. The volume in the peanut gallery increased as ribald comments were tossed about like volleyballs at the beach on a holiday weekend. The crowd’s need for spectacle wrapped around Drew’s chest and squeezed. He worked harder at reaching the stage, hoping to keep his landlady from starting a riot.

Off to the side, the Widows Club board was in urgent conference. Bitsy looked up and caught sight of Drew. She nudged Mims. When Mims saw him, the apprehension on her face morphed to relief and then, as she took a glance toward Lola, to calculation.

Drew didn’t like that look. Especially when he saw Wendy in the wings wearing blue jeans, cowboy boots, and a frilly pink blouse buttoned to her neck.

“Please. I need to know.” Lola closed her eyes, as if she didn’t really want to know the truth. “Why was my husband unfaithful?”

The crowd drained of energy.

Some of the fight seemed to drain from Lola too.

Mims took advantage and reclaimed the microphone. “We’re ready to bid. Remember, Lola isn’t your average local. She’s from New York City. She does hair and makeup professionally. We’ll start the bid at one hundred dollars.”

Lola froze, staring above the crowd as if wishing she were above the mess she’d made.

Drew finally reached the stage. From his vantage point, his landlady’s legs looked incredibly long. Distractingly long.

With a raucous crowd at his back, Drew couldn’t afford to be distracted. “Lola.” He reached for her. “Come down.”

She was coming down all right. She was coming down from Watch-Out-World mode and sliding into Woe-Is-Me territory. She blinked watery eyes. “Sheriff?”

“How about seventy-five?” Mims didn’t seem to be working the crowd as much as she was working Drew. She smiled down at him. “Do I hear fifty?”

Lola’s brow furrowed. “I’m being marked down?”

For God’s sake, Mims.” Drew hopped onto the stage. “We made a deal.” That the widows wouldn’t bamboozle Lola into participating.

“Sold!” Mims grinned triumphantly. “For fifty dollars to Sheriff Drew Taylor.”

“I didn’t bid,” Drew snapped. He took Lola’s arm and turned her toward the stairs, catching a whiff of alcohol on her breath. He nearly ran into Wendy waiting in the wings. Her gaze dropped to the floor, along with his hopes that she might be his best defense against his ex-wife Jane’s efforts to gain custody of little Becky.

“Rules are rules, Sheriff.” Mims tsk-tsked into the microphone. “Fifty dollars is a bargain and for a worthy cause. Please pay the cashier.” She gestured toward Clarice. And then she lowered the microphone, raising her voice to be heard above the crowd. “We didn’t break our agreement. Lola volunteered.” The Widows Club president glanced toward the bar. “Of course, if you want to be a stickler about it, I could take Priscilla in Lola’s place. She looks pretty tonight, and she mentioned she might be ready for some excitement.”

No way was Drew letting his sister on that stage. He paid Clarice and led Lola away as the next bachelorette was put on the chopping block.

It was a long walk to their booth. People smiled and shouted congratulations as they passed.

Lola lagged half a step behind Drew, ducking her head to avoid attention.

Drew slowly eased his grip and leaned close to her ear. “Are you okay? I can take you home if you like.”

Her blue eyes caught his, and she gave him a tentative smile. “I—“

“Hey, Sheriff,” Iggy King called from the bar, tipping back his straw cowboy hat. “Way to take advantage of a fire sale.”

Lola’s smile hardened. She quickened her steps, beelining to their table and the full flutes of champagne, as determined as his twin sisters to find trouble.

Drew was faster and body-blocked her. “You’ve had enough.”

“I’m just beginning.” Lola elbowed Drew out of her way, nothing soft about her now. “This is my date. I call the shots.” She flounced onto the bench seat.

Drew scowled. “Technically, I bought you.”

“Pity purchases don’t count.” She flung her sun-kissed brown hair over one shoulder, radiant in her Watch-Out-World indignation.

“It was a rescue.” Drew bared his teeth in a smile. Lola was exactly the kind of woman he and his sweet little daughter didn’t need—obstinate and unpredictable.

“He said, she said.” Lola raised her glass. “To the truth.” She drained her bubbly and reached for the bottle.

Drew’s hand got there first. He parked the champagne on the seat next to him.

The crowd laughed at something Mims said, and the bidding began anew. On Wendy,

“If you don’t pour me another glass, I’m going to interrogate you.” Lola fixed Drew with a steely-eyed glare worthy of the finest police detectives in New York City. “You weren’t surprised when I told you about Randy’s laundry habits today. You knew he’d strayed.”

“How much have you had to drink?” Drew countered.

“A couple pregame shots. For courage,” she added. “Did Randy use your house for his dirty deeds?”

The last thing Lola needed right now was the truth about her husband. If Drew told her there’d been two sets of headlights every few nights at the garage apartment behind his house, she’d grill each woman at Shaw’s who drove a car, including Pris.

Drew’s gaze drifted to his sister. When her marriage had begun to crumble a year or more ago, she’d separated from her husband. His mother had let slip once that Pris had found someone new. That relationship hadn’t panned out, obviously … Because Randy had died?

Pris laughed at something Noah said and ordered a beer.

Drew shook his head, refusing to believe Pris had been Randy’s other woman.

Next to his sister, Iggy stared at Lola as if he were a bird dog and she were a plump pheasant he’d startled from the brush.

Without meaning to, Drew jutted his chin.

“He did cheat at the farmhouse.” Lola sat back and raised her voice. “Did Randy host wild parties? Did you double-date with my husband? Did he dance with blow-up dolls?”

Several passing patrons glanced their way.

“Keep it down.” Drew took a swig of champagne. “Identifying Randy’s lover won’t make you feel any better.”

“Wanna bet?” But Lola’s words lacked fire, and she pressed her eyes closed. When she opened them, she looked at Drew with a vulnerable expression, like the one his sister Eileen got when she hit a dead end, the one with watery eyes and too much trembling around her mouth. “I just want to know. Was it a long-term affair or something intense and brief that Randy regretted? Did he think I was stupid?” She swiped his glass, raised it to her lips and then put it back down, untouched. “I have to know.” Her voice dropped to a whisper that Drew had to strain to hear. “Was it real? Did he love me?”

The vulnerability in her voice reached deep inside Drew and took hold.

His annoyance with Lola dissipated, and it wasn’t a hardship to meet her tearful gaze, to admire her fragile beauty, to hope she’d find her way past the shock she’d had today. “No one can answer that but Randy.”

Review - - Undercover Bromance

UNDERCOVER BROMANCE
by Lyssa Kay Adams
Publisher: Berkley
Release Date: March 10, 2020
Reviewed by Hellie

Braden Mack thinks reading romance novels makes him an expert in love, but he’ll soon discover that real life is better than fiction.

Liv Papandreas has a dream job as a sous chef at Nashville’s hottest restaurant. Too bad the celebrity chef owner is less than charming behind kitchen doors. After she catches him harassing a young hostess, she confronts him and gets fired. Liv vows revenge, but she’ll need assistance to take on the powerful chef.

Unfortunately, that means turning to Braden Mack. When Liv’s blackballed from the restaurant scene, the charismatic nightclub entrepreneur offers to help expose her ex-boss, but she is suspicious of his motives. He’ll need to call in reinforcements: the Bromance Book Club.

Inspired by the romantic suspense novel they’re reading, the book club assists Liv in setting up a sting operation to take down the chef. But they’re just as eager to help Mack figure out the way to Liv’s heart. . .even though she’s determined to squelch the sparks between them before she gets burned.

Hellie’s Heeds

I cannot wait for you guys to read this book. You may recall in the BROMANCE BOOK CLUB that Braden Mack was the secondary character that all the women swooned over, repeatedly. He was hysterical and charming--and also the founder of the Bromance Book Club. I couldn’t wait to see who he finally ended up paired with. Lyssa did not disappoint. She gave him the most uncharmed, no-bullshit woman who I ever wanted to be friends with: Liv Papandreas.

Liv is Thea’s little sister (the heroine of the first book); and she is Salty with a capital S. I adore her. When she first meets Mack, he has just helped himself to her leftover chinese lo mein, and boy, can I relate. (Hands off my leftovers, people!) She is a pastry chef at a renown top tier restaurant, working for an asshole celebrity chef who sexually assaults his women workers and pays them off (and/or intimidates them) to keep quiet. When she discovers this side of her boss (who she thought was just a normal entitled asshole), she sets out to expose him.

However, Mack has also learned of this travesty and wants to help dispense justice. Liv doesn’t want his help, but that hardly matters, he’s going to help anyway. Mack is determined to protect Liv, even if from herself. Liv is determined to show Mack she doesn’t need protection and certainly not from him. Everything about Liv throws Mack off his game--any smooth moves he has had with women prior to Liv have evaporated, and it takes him quite a while to figure out presenting a charming perfect front is the opposite of authenticity and the connection with Liv he craves.

ENGLISH MAJOR GIBBERISH & FEMINIST RANT: As before, there is a “book within a book” subplot that does the doublework of presenting romance novels as feminist literature that helps people learn about themselves and how they connect and also as a foil for the main characters since the books the characters are drawn to are filled with characters with the same flaws and strengths they have to overcome and discover. Plus having the men meet and discuss the books, and also to stand for one another as the main character figures out what he needs to do to be authentic and loved is sweet and brilliant. Part of me, when reading it, felt it was a bit “wish fulfillment” (i.e. “Men would never do this!”), but then I thought about it and realized, the reason I don’t believe it could happen is that society doesn’t normalize it and make it an acceptable behavior for men to exhibit. Which is exactly the problem; and which is exactly what romance novels should be doing, yes? Breaking down barriers, increasing diversity, and celebrating true intimacy? So...yes, Bravo, Lyssa Kay Adams, for that scene where Mack is supported by his guy friends and he has a breakthrough. That is exactly what needs to happen. We need to make this normal if we ever want to help break the patriarchy from harming men as well as women.

Okay, off my soapbox now.

The banter is hysterical between the two main characters. This book was a quick read for me; and there were scenes where I was crying with laughter. (Randy the Rooster steals all the scenes. Note to self: never own a rooster. Also, who knew hens don’t have vaginas?) I did read Liv and wonder if most readers would love her as I do. She’s cynical, sarcastic, covered in barbed-wire, and unapproachable on a good day. And I also know we women tend to have a bit of a higher standard for women than we do with men, even in character form. But Mack is quick to see through Liv’s saltiness to her marshmallow center and not take her sarcasm and hatred of all things romantic personally. I hope readers do the same.

There is a third book in the series coming out in October which will feature two secondary characters from this book...and I cannot wait.

Jenny always dreamed of getting married at Heart’s Landing. But when she finally visits the charming small town, she’s there to make wedding arrangements for someone else: her cousin, who also happens to be her boss and a famous movie star. To keep the event secret and avoid a media circus, Jenny pretends she’s the one getting married.

Nick is intrigued by this bride-to-be who starts visiting his bakery every afternoon for sweet treats and conversation. He has to keep reminding himself that she’s already spoken for.

As Jenny deals with her cousin’s ever-changing demands, she tries to hide her attraction to Nick. Planning this wedding couldn’t be more complicated…and what will happen once the truth comes to light?

PJ's Thoughts:

If you're a fan of Hallmark Channel movies there's a good chance you're going to love A Simple Wedding. Leigh Duncan brings the small, wedding destination town of Heart's Landing to life with vivid descriptions and fills the wedding-related businesses with likable people readers will want to know better. The story flows smoothly, like a gentle summer's ride down a lazy river, with occasional bumps but a sweet landing at the end.

Jenny is an engaging character and I easily became invested in her, happily nudging her along the path of friendship with Nick and hoping for more. Nick is such a good guy...and he bakes! I fell for him right along with Jenny. Duncan does a good job of strengthening their friendship, and deepening their emotions, without crossing any relationship boundaries. Remember, Jenny is pretending to be engaged to someone else and planning her own wedding. I also appreciated the decisions made near the end of the story, giving Jenny and Nick the necessary time to strengthen their feelings without secrets between them. Kudos to Duncan for taking the time to grow and solidify this relationship after all is revealed.

If you're looking for a sweet, fun, feel-good romance filled with likable main characters, plenty of colorful secondary characters, and one high-maintenance cousin, I suggest giving A Simple Wedding a try. I'm already looking forward to my next visit to Heart's Landing.
