Review - - Artfully Yours

Artfully Yours
by Joanna Lowell
Publisher: Berkley
Release Date: February 21, 2023
Reviewed by Santa

Nina Finch isn't suited for a life of crime. Raised by her art-forger brother, she can paint like Botticelli. But she'd so much rather be baking gooseberry tarts. She finally has the money she needs to open her own bakery. Unfortunately, her brother's carelessness lands her—and their forgeries—directly under the nose of London's most discerning art critic, Alan De'Ath. De'Ath knows the paintings are fake. He doesn't know that Nina had a hand in their creation. In fact, he offers her a job in his household. Accepting it is the most dangerous thing she has ever done....

Alan takes pride in seeing things other people miss. He plans to catch the forger and cement his reputation. There's only one problem: the closer he gets to the beguiling woman he hired, the less he trusts his perspective. Nina isn't what she seems. But despite their false start, she just might hold the real key to his heart.

As Nina and Alan’s attraction grows, divided loyalties threaten to pull them apart and shatter their worlds. They’ll lose everything, or discover how powerful true love can be....

Santa Says:

What can I say about Artfully Yours by Joanna Lowell? I really enjoyed this book. This was a five star read for me. As in her two previous books, Joanna Lowell writes complex characters with such depth of character. Both Nina and Alan carry deep secrets and scars from their childhoods which color their relationships with their siblings. There are jealousies and resentments that Alan has to deal with his brother. All he wants to do is be respected and allowed to lead his own life with no strings attached. Not so easy with a brother who is a rather unhappy duke, husband and father.

Nina works to get out from under her brother and his nefarious dealings. She and his brother made their living as forgers. He went to jail for a bit and made quire a name for himself. All she wants to do is open a sweet shop of her own. Kind of hard to do when your brother, the person who raised you, steals your nest egg for his own dreams. And somehow manages to get mixed up in forgeties again and its up to her to get an errant letter out of the duke’s unsuspecting hand,

Alan and Nina meet at the duke’s house where she is being sacked for being a belligerent maid. Alan is determined to solidify his status as an art critic who can ferret out forgeries. This lands Nina directly in his sites as the forgeries he has identified - some owned by his very brother - are, in fact, made by Nina and her own brother’s hand. She is left to clean up after her brother whose forgeries come under the keen eye of an art critic. What better way to keep ahead of him than to go and work for him.

As a result of their encounters, Nina and Alan cannot deny their attraction and a connection. They see each other more clearly than anyone else in their lives but the road to a HEA is chock full of obstacles and trials. But, happily, they overcame them. Joanna Lowell is a master at creating characters that grow and change. We get a view into their family dynamics and the love that underlies so much of their lives. I was rooting for just one or two people in this book.

I highly recommend this book. It was slow to start and there’s a lot of history and mystery but it is well worth the ride.

Review - - Four Weeks of Scandal

Four Weeks of Scandal
by Megan Frampton
A Hazards of Dukes Novel
Publisher: Avon

It only takes one moment to cause a scandal...and four weeks to live it down!

Week one: Lovely, lively Octavia Holton arrives in the village, determined to claim her inheritance—the home she grew up in with her late father. Surely he meant for his daughter to have the property, and owning it means she could fix it up, sell it, and use the money to pay off her debts. But when she arrives, she discovers the house is also claimed—by one Gabriel Fallon.

Week two: Gabriel claims his father won the property in a bet, but he can’t bring himself to toss Octavia out on her very delightful derrière, so he makes her a four-week bargain: Together they’ll pretend to be engaged, all the while seeking out any will, letter, or document that proves who gets the ownership.

Weeks three and four: But that means togetherness...a lot of togetherness, and long days—and evenings—in each other’s company. The pair seems destined to “duke it out,” staking their claims...but it’s all too soon that they realize their rivalry might lead to something much more intimate. And suddenly four weeks seems like a long time. And yet not enough.

Santa Says:

Yet another triumph for Megan Frampton in this infectiously witty, thoroughly enjoyable series! I guarantee you will fall in love with the impetuous Octavia and the cautious Gabriel. Both products of their scandalous, reprobate fathers who thought nothing of gambling their children's lives and legacies away with the turn of a card. Octavia and Gabriel arrive at Octavia's dilapidated home with each claiming it as rightfully theirs. But first, Octavia must find proof that predates Gabriel's voucher that states it is his. They agree to live there together while searching for the proof and cleaning the house up. A fake engagement appeases the local villagers. In the ensuing month, they find themselves holding a gangster at bay, hosting an event to pay back said gangster and falling in love. I fell in love with Octavia, Gabriel and the delightful family of villagers who help them in their quest. I read it in one day - it was that good!

Reggie Lee Stafford is a hometown girl living in Rambling, the town in Texas Hill Country where she grew up. As a single mom, her world revolves around her young daughter and her great job writing for the local newspaper. But her peaceful life is turned upside down when Frank Bell—the bane of Reggie's teenage existence—returns to town to claim his inheritance.

Now, Frank is the owner of the local paper where Reggie works. Reggie can't imagine going to work every day and seeing her old nemesis. Frank seems intent on apologizing, and if he plays his cards right, he might be able to make up for having been such a jerk when they were young. But Reggie has more than her own reputation to protect this time, and Frank is going to have to pull out all the stops to prove he's worth a second chance.

Santa Says:

Welcome Back to Rambling, Texas by June Faver is a 5 star read for me. It is an enemies-to-lovers story that ticks off all the boxes for me. Hot guy returns to small town to find the girl that he crushed on in high school was still around. Still as aloof and still as beautiful and, interestingly, in his employ.

Frank Bell left Rambling as soon as he graduated high school, went to law school and quenched his wanderlust by traveling the world, buying, turning around and selling businesses. No moss was going to grow on this rambling man.

Reggie Lee Stamford worked for the local newspaper The Rambling Gazzette, helped her dad out at his store, married a guy from high school who walked out on her and their daughter. The town of Rambling means everything to her. She loves every part of it. Her roots are here and her life is peaceful.

Until Frank Bell strolls back into town looking to have grown up very nicely indeed and not two minutes of seeing her again calls her by the nickname he gave her back in high school as retaliation for laughing at the New Boy. He’s back to take care of his late great aunt’s estate. He doesn’t plan to stay long at all which suits Reggie just fine. But as their paths cross again and again it soon becomes clear that there is a chemistry there. Can Reggie, her adorable daughter and a seemingly not for profit newspaper be just the things that take root in Frank’s heart?

I smiled throughout this book and really enjoyed it. It has all the hallmarks - if you will - of delightful romance movie! Great fun!

Review - - A Lady's Guide to Mischief and Mayhem

A Lady's Guide to Mischief and Mayhem
by Manda Collins
A Lady's Guide - Book 1
Publisher: Forever
Release Date: November 10, 2020
Reviewed by Santa

A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem by Manda Collins is a five star read for me. I was beyond excited when I first learned that Manda Collins had written a mystery romance. I was happy to discover it was much more than simply that. Elements of both a mystery and a romance are masterfully interwoven throughout the book making it a winner for readers of both genres.

Lady Katherine Bascomb is a widow whose unhappy marriage gave her ownership of her husband’s newspaper, The Gazette. Some of the men of her circle see women as too delicate for such an enterprise. To their minds young ladies and women should be shielded from life’s more demanding and, at times, uglier side. To encourage women to be strong and able to take care of themselves would only  lead to mischief and mayhem.

Lady Katherine could not agree less and she finds a like-minded woman in Miss Caroline Hardcastle. Together they create a new column for the paper that will instruct women on how to better look out for themselves. They name it A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem. Their first column is a massive hit. It provides a description of, what some believe to be, the Commandment Killer.

This revelation has a ripple effect which throws Lady Katherine into the direct path of Detective Inspector Andrew Eversham who - thanks to the article - was removed as chief inspector on the case. A man is arrested which Andrew thinks is a mistake. Lady Katherine and Andrew clash but soon realize two keen minds are better than one as they together pursue clues which bring them closer to danger and a killer.

Manda Collins’ writing will keep you on the edge of your seat. The dialog is witty and crisp. Inspector Eversham is both a sigh-worthy and a sharp-minded investigator. He is very different from Lady Katherine’s unlamented late husband. Their passionate exchanges spark an undeniable attraction between these two characters that will keep you turning the page for more.

He needs a bride…

Nash, the “dangerous” Duke of Malvern, has always bristled against the rules of English society. Hot tempered and fearful of becoming like his brutish late father, he lives a life of too much responsibility and too little joy. And although he’s vowed to never marry, a duke has a duty—and there’s only one way to get himself an heir and a spare. So Nash reluctantly takes a look around at society’s available young ladies to see who might be willing to put up with his one-word answers and frequent glowers.

She longs for love…

After the death of her father and wicked stepmother, Ana Maria goes from virtual servant to lady-in-training, and while society life has its benefits—gorgeous gowns!—its restrictive rules stifle her sprit. And when her independent actions put her in danger, her half-brother insists Nash teach her some self-defense. While most of London’s ladies find Nash intimidating, she only sees a man who needs introducing to all the joys life has to offer. So although officially they are coming together for fighting lessons, unofficially their physical contact begins to blur the line between friendship and begins to grown into something more…

Santa says:

Tall, Duke and Dangerous by Megan Frampton is the second book in her Hazards of Dukes series. This five-star book had me eagerly turning the page. Megan writes an emotionally draining story of two people born into adverse circumstances who forge a revolutionary love story.

Tall, Duke and Dangerous follows Nash, the Duke of Malvern and a former cinder-sweeping maid of all drudgery, Lady Ana Maria. As a friend to both her brother and cousin, Nash and Ana Maria have known each other since they were children. And their childhoods were far from happy ones. Nash’s father, a monster of a man and father, was both emotionally and physically abusive. Ana Maria, though the legitimate daughter of a duke, grew up in the shadow of a stepmother who kept her in the household as a maid! A real life Cinderella.

Nash feels protective of her as he would feel for any of his father’s by-blows who he has managed to locate and provide for. However, he finds he feels more deeply for her than anyone else in his life but she’s his best friend’s sister. He is a loner with so many walls built around him. His father isolated him from his family. His violent nature caused Nash’s mother to flee from home when Nash was very young. There was no way he would have been allowed to go with her.

Following the death of her father and stepmother, Ana Maria finds her new status in life difficult to accept.  She feels neither fish nor fowl as a lady in a household where she was a maid, though the ability to wear gorgeous gowns certainly is a plus. Her flare and joy in colors prompts her to really use that talent - that eye in design. Her cousin Thadeus, the new Duke of Hasford, lets her redecorate one of the parlors. She finds she loves the whole process and wants to build a business to forge her sense of independence.

Nash controls himself and is brief in both his relationships and in how he communicates with everyone around him. It’s a safeguard which Ana Maria recognizes and accepts as no one else has ever done. Ana Maria is determined to show Nash the joy of living. This exuberance for life lands her into more than one scrape from which Nash rescues her. The truth of the matter is that they rescue one another.

Carrie Burns has a successful business, a young son, Oliver, and an energetic Jack Russell terrier. She doesn't have time in her busy schedule for her ex-husband and his talk of working together again. But when she runs into Lance in the dog park, their lives are turned upside down.

Lance Donovan wants to promote his fledgling construction company by helping his brother Caleb with a big condo conversion. Lance even knows the perfect interior designer to make this project a success—his ex-wife, Carrie. But after a fateful meeting at the dog park, Lance finds himself not only petsitting both his brother's dog and the beloved Jack Russell terrier he had to leave behind in the divorce, but babysitting a young son he never knew he had while his ex-wife tries to get back into dating. How did life get this crazy?

Lance is determined to win back the love he thought he'd lost—but he's going to need a lot of help from his furry friends.

Santa says:

A Tale for Two by Mara Wells is a five out five star second chance romance! This is Mara Wells’ second book following the loves and lives of the delicious Donovan brothers. Having not read the first book in that series, it clearly stands on its own. The book really carries a delightful punch with a building that needs some love, two dogs who ratchet up the scamp quota and a blast from one of the Donovan brothers’ past.

This is Lance Donovan’s story following his bitter divorce from his wife, Carrie. Lance still did not understand how they went from passionately in love to passionately in disdain. Carrie wonders the same as she swipes through dating apps and keeping up with the demands of her interior design company.

Working with his brothers Caleb and Knox at their new construction company has helped Lance move on. They are currently working on rehabilitating and updating The Dorothy. It's early days to determine if it was a good idea to work together but their youngest brother, Caleb, has enough positivity for all three. Caleb is also about to marry the love of his life, Riley - so that happiness spills out onto everything.

In an effort to get the building into shape without putting out the senior residents of the building, Caleb and Riley test run a small honeymoon cruise with some of the residents. Lance agrees to watch their poodle Lou Lou. A trip to the dog park brings a chance encounter with a terrier who looks remarkably like Beckham the dog Carrie ‘won’ in the divorce, Carrie herself, and a sticky-handed toddler named Oliver. It turns out both the dog and the little boy are his. Needless to say, there is a lot of talking and listening that needs to happen. Two things they were not very good at when they were married.

How can two people who came so far apart ever come back together again? Lance and Carrie begin a journey of rediscovering who they as individuals, parents and as a couple. I loved this book for the sharing in their journey to finding an everlasting love. Go out and get yourself a copy. I intend to read the first book that follows Caleb and Riley’s story. And I’ve already pre-ordered the book that follows their older brother Knox’s story. That is how good I find Mara Wells’ story telling!

Review - - The Worst Best Man

The Worst Best Man

A wedding planner left at the altar? Yeah, the irony isn’t lost on Carolina Santos, either. But despite that embarrassing blip from her past, Lina’s offered an opportunity that could change her life. There’s just one hitch… she has to collaborate with the best (make that worst) man from her own failed nuptials.
Marketing expert Max Hartley is determined to make his mark with a coveted hotel client looking to expand its brand. Then he learns he’ll be working with his brother’s whip-smart, stunning—absolutely off-limits—ex-fiancée. And she loathes him.
If they can nail their presentation without killing each other, they’ll both come out ahead. Except Max has been public enemy number one ever since he encouraged his brother to jilt the bride, and Lina’s ready to dish out a little payback of her own.
Soon Lina and Max discover animosity may not be the only emotion creating sparks between them. Still, this star-crossed couple can never be more than temporary playmates because Lina isn’t interested in falling in love and Max refuses to play runner-up to his brother ever again...

Santa says:
The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa was just what this reader needed. This 5 star book ticked all the boxes that make a great romance. Lina is a gorgeous, strong, slightly vulnerable heroine. Max is a gorgeous, strong, slightly vulnerable hero. Enemies to lovers. Heroine has a wonderful, loving, supportive family around her. Hero has a family that is, shall we say, challenging. Having this mix had me crying, laughing and, at times, ready to take off my earrings to do battle for my prima - my cousin.

We are introduced to Max when he awakens to learn - via text - that his brother Andrew has decided, based on his advice, that he is not ready to marry Lina. It falls to Max to let her know Andrew is not going to marry her.

For Lina - it’s bad enough to be left waiting at the altar - but as an up and coming wedding planner - it is beyond humiliating. One could say she would plan for brides and never be one herself. She kicks Max out of her suite and turns to her cousins to rally around her to do damage control.

Fast forward three years and Lina and her wedding planner business have caught the eye of Rebecca Cartwright, CEO of the prestigious Cartwright Hotel Group, the DC area. She would like Lina to apply for the position of wedding planner at their flagship hotel. Lina is honored and shares her news with her assistant and cousin Jaslene. Lina is very close to her Brazilian family and they share everything. Lina is determined to be as successful as her mother and aunts who came to this country, survived divorces, and banded together to start their own business.

And so while planning her cousin Natalia’s wedding, she agrees to meet with Rebecca to see what this opportunity has to offer her. Lina welcomes the challenge of competing against another candidate in showing Rebecca her vision for the hotel group. Rebecca offers the service of her marketing group to come up with and present her vision. Enter the representatives from Atlas Communications - none other than Max and Andrew Hartley. Talk about getting the wind knocked out of you but Carolina Santos is no pushover! She recovers quickly and pretends never to have known either one of them. Rebecca then proceeds to assign Lina one of the brothers to work with on marketing her vision to the Cartwright group.

Lina is paired with Max - a slightly better choice than Andrew. She had made her peace with him years ago. Lina is determined to present her vision without any help from anyone, particularly Max. Max, eager to get out from under his brother’s shadow is equally determined to show that the successes he had outside of DC were no accident.

Can this enemies to lovers story work? Readers, are you in for a marvelous ride. Max and Lina try for the no strings attached approach and soon find that love has other plans for them. What also attracted me to the story was the fact that Lina was a first generation Brazilian American with close ties to her family who inspired and drove her to be a success. Her mother and aunts reminded me of the strong women in my own family. And the humor and the family gatherings were reminiscent of my own experiences as a first generation immigrant. Max’s family dynamic also drew me in, reflecting my husband’s more American upbringing. I also enjoyed the glimpses into Max’s friend who will be featured in Mia Sosa’s next book which I am very excited about. And who knows, maybe Andrew may turn out to be not such a monumental jerk in the future.

It should be simple to find the perfect wife—and from his first glimpse of Lady Cassandra Ravenel, he’s determined to have her. But the beautiful and quick-witted Cassandra is equally determined to marry for love—the one thing he can’t give.
Everything except her . . .
Severin is the most compelling and attractive man Cassandra has ever met, even if his heart is frozen. But she has no interest in living in the fast-paced world of a ruthless man who always plays to win.
When a newfound enemy nearly destroys Cassandra’s reputation, Severin seizes the opportunity he’s been waiting for. As always, he gets what he wants—or does he? There’s one lesson Tom Severin has yet to learn from his new bride:
Never underestimate a Ravenel.
The chase for Cassandra’s hand may be over. But the chase for her heart has only just begun . . .

Santa says:
I must confess that I kept piling book upon book on my TBR pile before reading Chasing Cassandra by Lisa Kleypas. I really am not sure why. I told a friend that having plowed through that pile and, with a few stellar exceptions, what I read was mostly tepid to me. That is not to say that they weren’t hot enough but rather that they did not spark anything in me as a reader.

How could I have doubted you, Lisa Kleypas! She has always been one of my GO TO authors for more than 15 years! Chasing Cassandra is by no means a tepid romance book -far from it! THIS is a 5 star romance novel! I was engaged and all in from the very first pages to the very end!

First, let me say that I love the Ravanel family! I loved the references to all the interconnected families here, as well. What better vehicle than a wedding to reintroduce them all. That’s where we find Tom Severin, a wildly but calculatedly successful businessman attending the wedding of Pandora Ravenel to the Viscount St. Vincent. This is where his frozen heart stops at the sight of Pandora’s twin sister, Cassandra. Tom is a man who knows what he wants and sets off to pursue her. The emphatic NO that he gets from her cousin and his brother both is delivered in such a deadpan manner much as a dogged parent might respond to an equally dogged child. And that is when I laughed out loud.

Cassandra’s guardian, Devon Ravenel is best friends and business associates with Tom Severin. He knows how he operates and how he has no heart or room for love. Tom admits this. He only has five feelings which he acknowledges and love is not one of them. Dev knows that Cassandra wants and needs love, especially given how she was raised. Cassandra, for her part, cannot help noticing Tom as a more than handsome man and knows that his heart is not as frozen and useless as Tom thinks it is.

And so the chase is on, with Cassandra and a street urchin named Bazzle slowly but shortly melting Tom’s frozen heart. I wished this story could have gone on and on. I am adding this one to my keeper shelf alongside the rest of the Ravenels and my beloved Wallflower series.
