Review - - Love, Lies and Spies

Love, Lies and Spies
By Cindy Anstey
Young Adult
Publisher: SwoonReads
Release Date: April 19, 2016

If you long for the Regency romance that was long on banter and a comedy-of-manners and short on the bedroom frolics, if you wish for a modern day Jane Austen with a splash of James Bond, then do I have the book for you.

LOVE, LIES, and SPIES is a young adult novel by Cindy Anstey, which I found by happy accident on a shelf at work (I work near a group of literacy professors; they always have young adult novels around), and was immediately sucked into the opening scene in which our intrepid heroine, Julianna Telford, scientific researcher of lady insects and soon to be published author (if she gets her way), is hanging most disastrously off the side of a cliff.

To which she says, “Oh my, this is embarrassing.” I think we can agree that’s a gross understatement.

And when she hears voices overhead, does she scream for help or thank the heavens for such speedy rescue? No. She asks—when they approach—if they are gentlemen. When they answer in the affirmative, she declines their offer of help and asks instead for their assistance in securing appropriate help, like a farmer, because if she’s found in the company of a strange gentleman, she’ll be sent home in shame. No publishing. The horrors.

Spencer Northam (don’t you love the name?) is looking for a spy. What he’s not looking for is a woman who seems to be in the thick of every sort of trouble, keeps secrets, and associates with questionable people; however, he can’t seem to help himself and he can’t seem to help hoping Julianna is not the spy he’s looking for.

Capers and hilarity ensue; and there’s a kidnapping…but in the end, Spencer gets his spy and Julianna gets her man. The writing is classic, packed with banter, complete with many lines that felt like the author was someone who loved and studied Austen’s way with phrasing—and maybe even a few of her more deplorable (and most love-to-hate) characters.  I definitely want to find what else this author is writing.

On Second Thought - - The Mad Earl's Bride

The Mad Earl’s Bride
By Loretta Chase
Publisher: Avon Impulse
Release Date: June 4, 2013
(Originally published in Three Weddings and a Kiss, Avon, 1995)

Novellas have proliferated since romance fiction entered the Digital Age. Not only are hundreds of new novellas available, often linked to popular series, but many beloved older novellas, once available only in anthologies, have been reissued as single titles. I practically danced with delight when one of my top five favorite novellas, The Mad Earl’s Bride, became available in digital format. I first read this novella more than twenty years ago when it was published as part of the anthology Three Weddings and a Kiss. Avon reissued it in 2010 in a different anthology, Three Times a Bride, before making it available as a single title three years later. Both anthologies and the single novella are available for ereaders.

Dorian Camoys, Earl of Rawnsley, has been a rebel and a rake hell bent on controlling his life, but at twenty-seven, he becomes convinced that his death from the brain disease that drove his mother into madness before it destroyed her is imminent. Terrified of ending his days restrained like a wild animal, he retreats to his home in Dartmoor. Debilitating headaches and hallucinations are already plaguing Dorian, and he fully expects madness and death to follow. Concerned about the Camoys line ending if Dorian dies without an heir, the duc d’Abonville, a distant relative of Dorian’s, suggests a marriage between Dorian and Gwendolyn Adams, a granddaughter of Genevieve, dowager Viscountess Pembury, the duc’s fiancĂ©e.

Many readers will recognize the duc and the legendary Genevieve as secondary characters in Chase’s beloved Lord of Scoundrels. (Bertie Trent also has a significant role in the novella.) Gwen is clearly cut from the same pattern as the heroine of LOS, sharing Jessica’s strength, unconventional ways, and healthy lust for her hero. No beauty, Gwen is a pragmatic, independent woman with a knowledge of medicine that makes her the equal of many trained doctors. She dreams of building a hospital to treat those who can’t afford medical care. She sees in a marriage to Dorian a way to acquire the wealth and influence to realize her dream. She is honest with Dorian about her purpose:

“I do need the money, to build a hospital,” she said. “I have definite ideas about how it should be constructed as well as the principles according to which it must be run. In order to achieve my goals—without negotiation or compromise—I require not only substantial funds, but influence. As Countess of Rawnsley, I should have both. As your widow, I should be able to act independently. Since you are the last of the males of your family, I should have to answer to no one.”

Dorian is initially reluctant, but after a year of self-imposed celibacy, he sees the appeal of marriage to the red-haired witch who evokes both desire and curiosity. Dorian and Gwen get much more from their marriage than they expected, and the reader gets the joy of seeing a passionate, loving relationship develop between two captivating characters. Wonderful dialogue and a fascinating look at early 19th-century medical practices are bonuses, and the gifted Chase moves her readers to laughter and to tears.

No matter how many times I read this novella, it is always fresh. The only thing better than rereading The Mad Earl’s Bride is rereading it as part of a marathon Chase reading that includes Lord of Scoundrels and The Last Hellion.

Review - - Daughters of the Bride

Daughters of the Bride
By Susan Mallery
Publisher: Harlequin HQN
Release Date: July 12, 2016

As a young woman, Maggie Watson was widowed and left almost destitute with three daughters to support. Earning a living left too little time for mothering, and the result is lingering tension in Maggie’s relationship with her three adult daughters, particularly her youngest Courtney. Nevertheless, all three daughters are committed to seeing that their mother has the wedding of her dreams as she marries for the second time after more than two decades as a widow.

The greatest burden of coping with Maggie’s bridezilla tendencies and pink infatuation falls on Courtney whose relationship with her mother is already fraught. Maggie has always underestimated Courtney, and Courtney responds by keeping secrets from her family. They think that she is a maid at the hotel owned by her mother’s friend, with no ambition to do anything else with her life. They have no idea that her work at the hotel involves far more than a maid’s duties or that she is only two semesters away from a degree in hotel management. Her reserve extends to her personal life as well. Her steamy relationship with her boss’s grandson, a successful music producer, is also a closely guarded secret.

Sienna, the middle daughter, is totally committed to her job as a donation coordinator for a women’s shelter, but she has a difficult time committing to a relationship. With two broken engagements in her past, she becomes engaged for the third time despite doubts that she and her fiancĂ© have what it takes for a lifetime together. Meanwhile, Rachel, the oldest daughter, can’t get over her ex-husband whom she divorced just shy of their tenth anniversary. A talented hair stylist, she loves her job, and she is devoted to her eleven-year-old son. But she is blind to her passive-aggressive ways and fearful of trusting her ex’s attempts to reconcile.

As the wedding draws closer, tensions increase between Courtney and her mother and among the sisters. The Watsons must resolve the problems of the past before they can move toward the future as a united family or move toward their individual HEAs.

Susan Mallery returns to Los Lobos, setting of Someone Like You (2004) and Falling for Gracie (2005) for this women’s fiction story with strong romantic elements. She does her usual excellent job of capturing the emotional mix of women’s relationships with one another. The women of Daughters of the Bride are all flawed, and reader sympathy may run thin at times. I found Sienna particularly difficult to like for much of the novel. However, the problems, both those within the family and those in the romantic relationships, have an appealing authenticity within the context established. The wedding planning provides some light-hearted moments as well as some tense one. I suspect that I will not be the only long-time Mallery reader who smiled to see Gracie Landon Whitefield as one of the wedding details. Overall, the book is a solid read.

If you like women’s fiction that focuses on sister relationships but with plenty of romance as well, I think you will enjoy this one.

Katie Ruggle Search & Rescue Giveaway

One of the most original and addictive series of books that I've discovered this year is the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue series by debut romantic suspense author Katie Ruggle. She captured my attention with the introductory novella, On His Watch (currently FREE in ebook), then ramped up the action, suspense, romance, and ongoing mystery with each of the next three books: Hold Your Breath, Fan the Flames, and Gone Too Deep. Now, I am impatiently waiting for the fourth and final book, In Safe Hands to be released on October 4th. There's a major plot twist at the end of Gone Too Deep and I cannot wait to find out how it all plays out in the last book! For more information about Katie Ruggle and the Search & Rescue series, check out my Q&A with the author.

Sourcebooks Casablanca, the publisher of this series has a terrific giveaway for one of our readers but before I get to that, here's a bit more information about the individual Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue books.

Hold Your Breath - Book 1

As the captain of Field County's ice rescue dive team, Callum Cook is driven to perfection. But when he meets new diver Louise "Lou" Sparks, all that hard-won order is obliterated in a instant. Lou is a hurricane. A walking disaster. And with her, he's never felt more alive...even if keeping her safe may just kill him.

Lou's new to the Rockies, intent on escaping her controlling ex, and she's determined to make it on her own terms...no matter how tempting Callum may be. But when a routine training exercise unearths a body, Lou and Callum find themselves thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a killer who will stop at nothing to silence Lou - and prove that not even her new Search and Rescue family can keep her safe forever.

You can read my review of Hold Your Breath here.

Fan the Flames - Book 2

As a Motorcycle Club member and firefighter, Ian Walsh is used to riding the link between the good guys and the bad. He may owe the Club his life, but his heart rests with his fire station brothers...and with the girl he's loved since they were kids, Rory Sorenson. Ian would do anything for Rory. He'd die for her. Kill for her. Defend her to his last breath - and he just may have to.

Every con in the Rockies knows Rory is the go-to girl for less-than-legal firearms, and for the past few years, she's managed to keep the peace between dangerous factions by remaining strictly neutral. But when she defends herself against a brutal attack, Rory finds herself catapulted into the center of a Motorcycle Club war - with only Ian standing between her and a threat greater than either of them could have imagined.

I've loved all of the books so far but - admit it, we all have one - this book is my favorite. Ian - and Rory - have very special places in my reader's heart. Especially Ian. ::Sigh::

Gone Too Deep - Book 3

George Halloway has spent his life alone, exploring the treacherous beauty of the Colorado Rockies. He's the best survival expert Search and Rescue has, which makes him the obvious choice to lead Ellie Price through deadly terrain to find her missing father. There's just one problem - Ellie's everything George isn't. She's a city girl, charming, gregarious, delicate, small. And when she looks up at him with those big, dark eyes, he swears he would tear the world apart to keep her safe.

With a killer on the loose, he may have no choice.

Ellie's determined to find her father no matter the cost. But as she and her gorgeous mountain of a guide fight their way through an unforgiving wilderness, they find themselves in the crosshairs of a dangerous man in search of revenge. And they are now his prey...

Like the strong and silent type? George is your man!

In Safe Hands - Book 4

As a member of the Field County Sheriff's Department, Chris Jennings is used to having it rough. The Colorado Rockies aren't for the weak-of-spirit, but he's devoted his life to upholding the law - and to protecting the one woman he knows he can never have. He'll do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

Daisy Little has lived in agoraphobic terror for over eight years. Trapped within a prison of her own making, she watches time pass through her bedroom window. Daisy knows she'll never be a part of the world...until the day she becomes the sole witness of a terrible crime that may finally tear the Search & Rescue brotherhood apart for good.

So excited for this book!

Spotlight - - Elizabeth Michels' The Rebel Heir

Elizabeth Michels is the award-winning author of the Tricks of the Ton series and the Spare Heirs series and one of my favorite new historical romance authors. I finished her new book, The Rebel Heir late last night and it's wonderful. I've enjoyed everything she's written but this one is, in my opinion, her best work to date. I adored both Ash and Evie and the sometimes humorous, sometimes heart-wrenching, and, ultimately, satisfying journey Michels gave them. There's a scene near the end that is one of my all-time favorite scenes in any novel I've ever read. I don't want to give away spoilers so I'll just say that daisies have always been my favorite flower. I hope you'll all read the The Rebel Heir and enjoy that scene - and the rest of the book - as much as I did. Now, here's Elizabeth Michels!

Hi, everyone! Let’s play a game! Since deception is a key ingredient in THE REBEL HEIR, the second book in the Spare Heirs series, I thought it would be fun to play two truths and a lie.  Do you know how this game works?

Ash Claughbane is here to tell you three things about himself and one of them is a lie…Yes, just one.  *gives Ash the side eye to keep him honest for a few minutes* Can you guess which fact isn’t true about Ash?  Good Luck!

  1. I’m from the Isle of Man. There was a time when my family had an estate, a vast home overlooking the sea, servants, gardens...  There was a time when my mother and father were alive and that home was intact.  There was a time when my three older brothers calling me by my given name of Ashley was my largest problem—there was an unfortunate rhyme that accompanied it, that I won’t repeat here.  But that was before Lord Rightworth took everything from us, and I vowed to get it all back.  I may be from the Isle of Man, but I haven’t been back there since.

  1. I’ve been traveling by carriage with my driver, Stapleton, for company for seven years.  I move from town to town, never staying long enough to unpack my trunks.  My business has thrived, and rightfully so.  I am quite skilled at it.  You see, I sell people what they desire, anything they desire.  Everyone wants something and it just so happens, I have that something bottled and in my carriage.

I made my way through all of Wales where my brothers were less likely to find me, then I began moving through southern England.  That was when he found me, not my eldest brother, the new duke, thankfully, but Fallon St. James.  He invited me to join a secret club of title-less gentlemen in London called The Spare Heir Society.

I’m not one to join anything at all.  I have no need of any sort of brotherhood having abandoned my own brothers long ago.  I told St. James as much and yet he gave me his calling card.  Stranger still, I kept it.  Now I’m in London, with a room in St. James’ peculiar home and headquarters.  My clothing remains in my trunk, but I’m here, newest member of The Spare Heirs Society.

  1. My name is Lord Crosby, purveyor of hope for the future.  I’m a forward thinking gentleman, a visionary some might say.  In a year or two, you’ll remember we met.  You’ll remember that I told you that your farming techniques and way of life were a thing of the past.  My steam machines will be in every home.  Small enough to be accessible to every family, and big enough to make the way all of society lives a little easier. Imagine the possibilities for the good people of England and beyond.  The world is changing and the future of our world is steam.

You’ll remember I told you of this.  On that day years from now, wouldn’t you like to say you were wise?  Wouldn’t you like to say you invested in Crosby Steam Works?

An Excerpt:

His heart beat beneath Evangeline’s hand.
“Ash, this is dangerous— whatever is happening here…”
“I know.” He grinned the wicked grin of a swindler about to steal the prize. “Say that you enjoy it as much as I do, Evie. Admit that you like breaking your rules with me.”
“They aren’t my rules,” she said.
“Then why follow them?”
She swallowed and looked up at him. “I make poor decisions on my own.”
“I disagree,” he said, still holding her close. He toyed with the hair that fell over her shoulder.
“I haven’t thrown you from my bedchamber. I’m certain that’s a poor decision.”
“That’s a matter of opinion,” he said with a grin. “What’s your opinion? What do you want, Evie?”
You, her heart screamed, but her mouth refused to form the word. Her gaze dropped back from the depths of his eyes to his lips. He was so close, and yet he only touched her hair and held her hand to his chest. It would be so easy to rise to her toes and show him what she wanted. And yet it wasn’t easy at all.
“You think I haven’t noticed that you’ve been staring at my mouth since I arrived?”
“I have not…” She began to disagree, but it would have been a lie and he knew it.
“Say that you want me to kiss you, Evie.”
“I would never…” she began, but fell silent.
“Tell me you want me. Say the words and I’ll kiss you.”
Evangeline’s lips parted, but she said nothing.
“Say, ‘I want your lips on mine, Ash.’ That’s all you have to do. I could show you so many things, Evie. Do you want me to? Say the words.”
Her breathing came out harsh as her heart pounded in her chest. How was he making her so unsettled simply with words?
“I could bring you so much pleasure, Evie. Do you want me to touch you? To truly touch you? If you asked me, I would fit your breasts into the palms of my hands just like this.” His hand hung in the air over her breast, close enough that she could feel the heat of his skin through her night rail. “Then I would lower my mouth to take your nipple between my teeth, tugging at your polished exterior until the real Evie pulled me closer. I would take your breast into my mouth and with my tongue…” He sighed, dropping his hand away from her. “But you have to tell me you want it.”
“Ash,” she whispered, already missing the heat of him close to her skin.
“There’s a world out there that you could experience. All you have to do is stop hiding and tell me what you want.”
It wasn’t that simple, was it? She opened her mouth, unsure how to speak of her own desires. She never talked that way, not like Ash was able to do. But the truth was, she did want him to kiss her. She wanted everything about this man. That was also the trouble. She couldn’t be trusted to speak— not just now. “I…”
He grinned and brushed a strand of hair from her face, placing a kiss on the top of her head as he did. “You’re almost there. Just a few more words. Perhaps you need more encouragement.”
“No.” She took two steps backward until her heels bumped the wall. “I- I’m quite…”
“Evie, has anyone ever spoken to you this way?” He took slow steps to close the gap between them.
“No,” she breathed.
“Do you like it when I do?” He grinned down at her as if he could hear all the thoughts she was too afraid to voice aloud. “I think you do. Do you want me to continue?”
“Do I have to say that as well?” she asked.
“No. I’ve learned in my line of work that it’s sometimes necessary to give someone a taste of what they want before they’ll pay the price.”
“Is that what you’re doing to me? Is this a taste of what’s to come?” Heaven help her, she hoped it was.
“Only if you want it. That’s my price.” He shifted her hair from her shoulder as he spoke, letting it fall down her back.
“That seems…” Whispers of his touch brushed down the side of her neck as he moved her hair. She worked not to lean into his palm and feel the full force of his hand on her skin. “…reasonable.”
“I thought so as well.” He shifted even closer to her, leaning his arm on the wall above her head and surrounding her without the benefit of his embrace to steady her. “If you tell me you want me to kiss you, I’ll kiss you here.” He spoke the words against the sensitive skin beneath her ear before moving down her neck, not touching her, but close enough that she could feel the warmth of his lips.
She splayed her hands on the wall behind her to keep from tipping sideways. He wasn’t even touching her, and still she struggled to breathe.
“I would kiss my way down your neck to just here where I can see your pulse beating rather fast. Is it beating fast because you want me to kiss you, Evie?” he asked against her skin. “You know my terms. Say the words. This is only the beginning…”

Review - - Because I'm Watching

Because I'm Watching
By Christina Dodd
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Release Date: September 6, 2016

Two lost souls living across the street from one another yet they might never have met had Maddie Hewitson not driven her car through the front wall of Jacob Denisov's house. Suddenly, the veteran is exposed - literally - to the light. Drowning in anguish, mental torment, PTSD, and survivor's guilt, Jacob has been barely existing in his small, dark house. Now he's forced to deal with contractors, insurance agents, nosy neighbors, and "Mad Maddie," as she's been dubbed by the residents of Virtue Falls. Slowly, he's being dragged out of the darkness and back into life and he's none too happy about it.

Maddie is certainly no stranger to mental anguish or to survivor's guilt either. She's been forced to live with the brutal events of her past for too long. Her move to Washington was supposed to bring a fresh start but the nightmares have followed and a killer stalks her. But it's a killer that only Maddie can see. With the front of his house gone, Jacob sits in his living room chair and watches as Maddie's madness plays out in full view. His heart recognizes her tormented soul and her fear is certainly real. It appears someone is trying to drive Maddie Hewitson over the edge. The only question is who is doing the driving? Is someone controlling Maddie's torment or has her mind finally succumbed to the horrors of her past?

I've been reading Christina Dodd books for a long time. I began with her historical romances, followed her to contemporary romantic suspense, then to paranormal, and, most recently, her Virtue Falls suspense thrillers. While I've enjoyed her writing in all sub-genres, I believe it's with her current series that she's doing her best writing and Because I'm Watching is at the top of that list. This is the kind of book that I race through as fast as I can to find out what happens next while wanting to read as slow as I can so as not to miss a thing. Maddie and Jacob are brilliantly crafted characters, so real that even though I know they're products of Dodd's imagination, I feel sure I should have read about them in the news. I so wanted them each to find their way out of the mire and into a happy, loving, relationship together. They deserve that and so much more. The secondary cast is authentic, without a single throwaway character in the lot. Each one is well-crafted, with a purpose that affects or moves the story forward in some way. Fans of the Virtue Falls books will see some progression with a few continuing characters but readers who are new to this series will have no trouble at all reading Because I'm Watching on its own.

From beginning to end, this is a story that grabs hold of the reader and refuses to let go. I read the entire book in one day. These characters absolutely would not let me walk away until I had read every single word of their journey. Dodd uses every facet of her creative mind to expertly guide her characters - and the reader - through this compelling, edge-of-your-seat, suspense thriller. Filled with compassion, intrigue, anguish, mystery, hope, murder, forgiveness, enough twists and turns to keep me constantly guessing, and a love that heals two broken souls, Because I'm Watching is a book you do not want to miss. It's one of my Best of 2016 and has my highest recommendation.

Book Tour Review - - Sunset in Central Park

Sunset in Central Park
By Sarah Morgan
Publisher: Harlequin HQN
Release Date: August 30, 2016

Frankie Cole is the resident cynic among the trio of friends who own and operate Urban Genie, an event and concierge service. The opening scene of the second novel in the series, which takes place at a bridal shower for a just-jilted bride, showcases Frankie’s antipathy toward weddings and other things romantic. Behind her cynicism lies Frankie’s childhood experience with a father who walked out on his wife and child and a mother who responded to her divorce with a desperation for male attention that made her—and by extension, Frankie—a Puffin Island scandal. Unlike her friends Paige, who has found grown-up happiness with the guy she has loved since she was a young teen (Sleepless in Manhattan), and Eva, a hopeless romantic, Frankie doesn’t believe in HEAs. Her affections are invested in her small group of friends and the plants she nurtures. If she thinks Paige’s brother Matt, her landlord and good friend, is a very sexy guy, well, that’s her secret, one with which she is most uncomfortable.

It’s also a secret from everyone but Paige and Eva that the thick, ugly glasses Frankie wears have nothing to do with her physical vision and everything to do with her need to create protective barriers. Matt Walker has known for a long time that he wants more than friendship from Frankie, and when he discovers that the glasses are part of Frankie’s armor, he uses that knowledge to begin gently pushing past her defenses. A successful landscape architect whose specialty is roof gardens, Matt turns his legitimate need for a horticulturalist for a summer project into a way to see that Frankie spends more time in his company. Frankie rejects the idea at first, but the chance to avoid Urban Genie’s summer wedding schedule and the guilt she feels at the thought of not helping a friend convince her to accept the job. What follows is a practically perfect friends-to-lovers tale, one that makes the friendship and the romance real and appealing.

Frankie’s cynicism could have made her a less than sympathetic character, but Morgan shows the character’s vulnerabilities early on and thus makes it easy for the reader to understand Frankie and root for her happiness. Best of all, Morgan shows Frankie’s complexity and the changes that loving Matt and being loved by him bring, and she does so in ways that avoid suggesting that love is a panacea for all the ills to which flesh is heir. Matt is my favorite kind of hero—intelligent, kind, honorable, great-hearted, and deeply loyal to his family and friends. I found his patience and tenderness with Frankie and his fondness for his cat, an anti-social abused rescue, as sigh-worthy as his six-feet plus of hotness. The secondary characters provide rich contexts for the central story, and the New York City setting and a visit to Puffin Island offer the best of two worlds without privileging one over the other.

Since I first read Sleigh Bells in the Snow, the first book in the O’Neil Brothers trilogy, three years ago, Sarah Morgan has become one of my favorite contemporary authors. She has a gift for creating characters with depth and authenticity that this reader finds fully engaging. With a novella and two novels, her From Manhattan with Love series clearly meets the standards of excellence set by her earlier HQN series.

I highly recommend Sunset in Central Park. Although it can be read as a standalone, I recommend you also read the novella “Midnight at Tiffany’s” and the novel Sleepless in Manhattan for the richest reading experience. The third book, Miracle on 5th Avenue, pairs Eva with a crime writer in a Christmas story. I expect it to be another wonderful Morgan book, and I am delighted that, according to the author’s web site, there will be another three books in this series. If you love contemporary romance, you really should be reading Sarah Morgan.
