It’s that time of year again! Spring, you ask? Well, yes, but that’s not what I’m talking about. It’s the time of year when Julie James fans rejoice because she has a new book out! It Happened One Wedding may not be my favorite of Ms. James’s books—Nick McCall absolutely refuses to give up his top spot—but it is terrific and well worth the wait.

FBI Special Agent Vaughn Roberts is intrigued when he witnesses a blind date gone bad while killing some time in a coffee shop. He narrates a play-by-play of their conversation in his head and is pretty much spot-on. After the woman’s “date” leaves, Vaughn walks over because it would be a shame to let a woman like that end her Friday night on such a sour note. What he doesn’t expect is the woman’s reaction when he pours on the charm—or what he believes is charm. I don’t want to spoil it, but her response is classic for a Julie James heroine. Vaughn leaves and heads over to the restaurant where he is meeting his brother, Simon, and Simon’s girlfriend for dinner.

Sidney Sinclair is back in her hometown of Chicago after spending eight years in New York City. Six months earlier, she caught her fiancé cheating on her right before the wedding, thus ending the engagement. Sidney now has a plan in regards to dating. She has a list of thirty-four things to help her spot when a man is not ready for commitment. The list helps her when she is approached by a gorgeous, but arrogant man in a coffee shop. Sidney quickly puts him in his place and leaves to meet her sister, Isabelle, and Isabelle’s boyfriend for dinner. Sidney is horrified to see the man from the coffee shop there and learns that he is the brother of Isabelle’s boyfriend. Awkward!  But that’s not all. Isabelle and Simon announce they are getting married…and they want Sidney and Vaughn to be the maid of honor and best man. So, Sidney and Vaughn will have to work together to help pull this wedding off. But can they do it without driving each other mad??

This book is so full of win. Sexy, confident FBI Special Agent? Check. Smart, successful, quick-witted heroine? Check. Witty banter and sexual tension? Check and check. See? Full of win. It Happened One Wedding is, in short, a marvelous book. Of course, I expect nothing less from a Julie James book.

Fans know how well-rounded Ms. James’s heroines are, but she has a special knack for depicting the male point of view when writing her heroes. They are total guys. Readers met Vaughn in the previous book (Love Irresistibly) as the charming, self-assured best friend of Cade Morgan. When he meets Sidney, he is brought down a notch. This is new to him as he isn’t used to being brushed off. Typically, he does the brushing off. It’s not that Sidney isn’t attracted to him—just the opposite. But after what happened with her ex-fiancé, she is not going to settle for just any guy. She isn’t afraid of entering another long-term commitment, which is nice because a lot of heroines I read about who go through a similar situation “swear off” men completely. Sidney wants the whole kit and caboodle…she just wants it on her terms. When she and Vaughn get past that initial awkwardness of having to work together, they form a friendship of sorts and he even helps her on her quest for finding Mr. Right. He explains to her what it means when guys say or do certain things and several of those exchanges had me laughing out loud. One in particular (at the beginning of chapter nineteen) had me rolling!! Good stuff. Another thing I love about Ms. James’s books is the fact that it is evident that she does extensive research, whether it is talking with FBI agents, or a wine store owner, or other lawyers. It shows in her writing. Ms. James, please know that your readers appreciate your hard work!

Folks, if you haven’t read Ms. James’s books, this is the perfect one to start with. It is the fifth book in the series, but all of Ms. James’s books are written as stand-alone books so it doesn’t matter where you start…just start! You won’t be disappointed. Those who have read all her previous books will be thrilled with a tie-in from her second book, Practice Makes Perfect. It certainly has me wondering who her next hero will be. So, if you love smart, fast-paced, well-written contemporaries, this is one that I highly recommend! Enjoy!

Ladies and gentleman, Julie James has done it again! Love Irresistibly is another winner and has joined Julie’s other books on my keeper shelves. As I’ve mentioned before in a previous review, I don’t believe Ms. James could write a bad book if she tried. Her storylines are always fresh and well-researched, her characters are bright and extremely likable, and the tension between the leads is smokin’. Her heroes are confident and sexy and her heroines are the kind of gals you could see yourself hanging out with or meeting for coffee…kind of like Julie, herself. J 

Readers met Cade Morgan in the previous book in the series, About That Night, when he was introduced as the Assistant U.S. Attorney who prosecuted and locked up the illustrious Twitter Terrorist. Of course, when Kyle Rhodes—said Twitter Terrorist—helped the U.S. Attorney’s office apprehend a murderer, the situation was a bit awkward for Cade, though he was appreciative of Kyle’s assistance. In Love Irresistibly, Cade is after a dirty politician and other corrupt Chicago jetsetters, and this time he needs the help of Brooke Parker. 

Brooke has worked her butt off to get to the prestigious position of general counsel for Sterling Restaurants. The only drawback is that she works a lot and has little time to date…which explains why her romantic relationships usually last only a few months. But she loves her job and does it extremely well. When Cade Morgan walks into her office asking for her help in order to bug a table at one of Sterling’s upscale restaurants, Brooke is skeptical as she is responsible for protecting Sterling’s interests. She wants details, but there are some that Cade cannot divulge due to the sensitive nature of the case. That’s when some sparks fly.

 

“Hmm.” He stretched out in the chair, looking effortlessly handsome and every inch the successful trial lawyer in his tailored navy pinstripe suit. “Now, normally, this would be the point when I’d have to give you the tough-guy speech about how, if you were to reveal to anyone the confidential nature of the information I’m about to give you, you could be charged with obstruction of justice and face a possible felony conviction and imprisonment.” He flashed her a dashing grin. “Luckily, though, since you’re a lawyer and obviously know that already, we can skip over the tough-guy stuff. Which is nice, because that part of the conversation can get really awkward.” 

… 

He’d come her, to her office, to ask for her help. Now he was threatening her with obstruction of justice charges—and most annoyingly, he was doing it with a smile. 

So she returned the favor. “That is nice, Mr. Morgan. Because in response to your tough-guy speech, I, in turn, would’ve had to give you my tough-girl speech, about where, exactly, federal prosecutors who come to my office looking for assistance can stick their obstruction of justice threats.” She smiled ever so charmingly. “So I’m glad we were able to sidestep that whole ugly business. Whew.”

 

Whew is right! Brooke gives as good as she gets, and where that typically drives other men away, Cade is drawn to her and wants to know just what makes her tick. He can relate to her workaholic nature as he is very much the same in regards to his job. He hasn’t had much luck in the dating department either, particularly because he doesn’t allow women to get to know him—the real him, deep down inside. As he tells it: “It’s all right there on the surface. What you see is what you get.”  It was nice to watch him slowly allow not only Brooke in, but also the teenage brother he didn’t know about. Brooke doesn’t keep up with football, so it surprises her when her best friend Ford and his buddies all know who Cade Morgan—Northwestern University’s Rose Bowl star—is. One of my favorite lines from the book comes from the part where her friends meet Cade.

 

Unfortunately, she wasn’t going to get a word in edgewise with him right then, seeing how her friends were fawning over him like twelve-year-old girls who’d scored backstage passes to a Justin Bieber concert.

 

Julie James turns up the heat with the love scenes in this book and my, oh my, they are super sexy. Cade is super sexy. He is one of the hottest heroes I’ve read in a while—completely confident without coming across as arrogant. Absolutely delicious. 

I highly recommend Love Irresistibly to any and all lovers of contemporary romance. It is brilliantly-written book that is a must-read! And if you haven’t yet discovered the talent of Julie James—who is one of my select “go to” contemporary authors—please do yourself a favor and pick up her books!

Once Rylann gets back to her table, her roommate, Rae, tells her that Smug Dimples is billionaire heir Kyle Rhodes. Rylann shrugs it off as no big deal. Later, Rae and their friends “ditch” Rylann so that Kyle will walk her home. During that walk Rylann discovers that Kyle isn’t a spoiled rich kid; he is charming, respectful, and ridiculously intelligent. Their attraction is evident and she agrees to go out on a date the next day. But Kyle never showed up.

Nine years later, Kyle and Rylann meet again—this time in a courtroom. Rylann, an Assistant U.S. Attorney, has recently transferred from San Francisco to Chicago six months after a break-up with her boyfriend of two years. Her first court appearance is an agreed motion call involving none other than Kyle Rhodes.

Computer genius Kyle took the Twitter world by storm when he hacked into and shut it down for two whole days because of a woman. This of course angered a lot of people and earned him the nickname “The Twitter Terrorist”. Kyle was arrested, pleaded guilty, and spent time in prison. (Those who’ve read A Lot Like Love met Kyle when his sister Jordan visited him in the Metropolitan Correctional Center.) He is being released early due to his sister’s help in an FBI investigation. Kyle is pleasantly shocked when he comes face to face with Rylann after so long. When she comes to him after the trial asking for his help with something he overheard while in prison, Kyle is uncertain as he still holds ill feelings toward her office. But a man was murdered and his testimony would make her case, so Kyle agrees.

“You really think the grand jury will believe what I have to say?”

“Sure,” she said with a shrug. “I believe you.” When she finished writing, she looked up from her legal pad and saw him staring at her. “What?”

It was nothing really, that she believed him. Just words. “You’ve asked a lot of questions about me. Now it’s my turn.”

“Oh, sorry. But that’s not how this works,” she said sweetly.

“It is this time counselor, if you want to keep me sitting in this booth,” he replied, just as sweetly.

She shook her head. “You are just as annoyingly cocky as you were nine years ago.”

“Yes.” Kyle’s gaze fell to her lips. “And we both know how that turned out.”

About That Night is another terrific contemporary romance from the talented Julie James. She creates some of the best heroines I’ve ever read—they’re smart, principled, practical, and independent—and Rylann is no exception. James pairs them with heroes who accentuate their characters and personalities. From the title of this book, you know that Kyle and Rylann share a past, but it wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be. Instead, it was better! It was so sweet and touching and I loved it.

Kyle isn’t the typical “spoiled rich kid”. He’s confident, not cocky. Rylann refers to him as “sin in a suit”. He appreciates what he has and just wants to earn his way fair and square, not live in his billionaire father’s shadow. His resolution to the problem he created is handled maturely and shrewdly. It was the absolute perfect solution. I absolutely loved the fact that Kyle and Rylann never really forgot the other after so many years. It reminded me of the saying, “Good things come to those who wait.” Like Ms. James’s books, Kyle and Rylann were worth waiting for. *g*

So, if you enjoy reading smart, sexy, fun contemporary romances, you simply MUST read Julie James’s books. Every single one she has written is on my keeper shelves—they are that good. About That Night is another winner from James and a book I highly recommend!

From the moment Nick meets Jordan, it’s obvious that she doesn’t care for him, but that certainly doesn’t stop him from irritating her. . . on purpose. When something goes slightly wrong with the investigation, Nick and Jordan must continue their “relationship” in order to keep appearances. Which, of course, leads to something a lot like love . . .

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Julie James’s books ROCK! Her writing is smart and sexy; each plot is fresh and unique; and each book contains characters that are truly remarkable and stick with you long after you finish their story. Plus, most of you know how much I *love* sexual tension in my books and Ms. James has become one of my “go to” authors for that. Phew! The banter between Nick and Jordan positively sizzled.

Thick snowflakes fell around them and tangled in her hair. Her voice was low, her tone as cold as the air. “The next time you want to know something, Agent McCall, don’t bother to sweet-talk me first. Just ask.”

“I assure you, Ms. Rhodes, when I sweet-talk a woman, she knows it.” He held out his hand, being polite. “You’re not going to get far in those boots.”

She ignored his hand. “Watch me.” She turned in her heels and walked away from the car, heading through the semi-plowed, snow- and ice-covered parking lot toward the entrance of division headquarters.

So help him, she didn’t slip once.

Jordan is my kind of heroine—she’s strong and confident without being “over the top” feministic. She has a soft side, too, and isn’t reluctant to show it. Nick is absolutely delicious. His type of hero—the protective alpha male—has recently become one of my favorites. There’s something innately sexy about a rough and tough guy whose one weakness is the woman he falls for. It was pure pleasure to watch their power play.

When I met Julie James at the RWA conference in Orlando last year, she mentioned that in this book, she wrote her first love scene from the hero’s point of view. Seeing as I’m a fan of that—ahem—I couldn’t wait to read it. Wow. I’ll just put it this way, even in the dead of winter, I needed to fan myself after that love scene. So. Incredibly. Sexy.

Jack Pallas (aka Mr. Sex on a Stick) and Cameron Lynde from Something About You play key roles in this book and I was overjoyed to see them again. Now, I simply cannot wait for Jordan’s brother Kyle’s book! He left quite an impression on me. *g*

Julie James’s previous book, Something About You, was one of my Top Picks for 2010 and I have no doubt that A Lot Like Love will be on my list for 2011. Do yourself a huge favor and pick up this book. I guarantee you will love it!

How Hitchcock Helped Me Write A Romance

Yep, that’s right, Alfred Hitchcock—the master of suspense—helped me write a contemporary romance novel. Well, not me personally, of course (boy would that have been a neat trick), but through his films.

One of my favorite themes that Hitchcock used in several of his movies is that of an innocent man in the wrong place at the wrong time who becomes swept up in some kind of murder/suspense intrigue. It’s a theme that works well because everyone can identify with it. We watch the movie thinking, “Hey—that could be me. What if I walked into that bar at just the wrong moment and accidentally saw X that got me in a whole load of trouble?”

This is, essentially, the set-up of my newest book, Something About You. Only instead of a bar, I use a hotel room. And instead of an innocent man in the wrong place at the wrong time, it’s a woman. My heroine, Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron Lynde, to be exact.

Cameron is treating herself to some much-needed pampering at the luxurious Peninsula hotel when, in the middle of the night, she’s awoken by strange noises coming from the room next to hers. At first it sounds as though the couple next door is having some kind of crazy sex marathon, but then the noises change. . . and what Cameron ends up overhearing is a murder that involves a U.S. Senator and a call girl. Watching through her peephole, she sees a man leave the hotel room next to hers and thus becomes the sole witness to the high-profile crime. And just like in Hitchcock’s films, that’s where the trouble begins.

Trouble, that is, in the form of FBI Special Agent Jack Pallas.

Jack is assigned to the murder investigation and—wouldn’t you know it—he and Cameron don’t get along. They worked together three years ago on a case that ended badly with Jack mouthing off to the press about Cameron and consequently getting transferred to Nebraska. And if it’s not bad enough that Cameron has to work with Jack as he tries to solve the crime, things get even worse when it turns out that the murderer may be after her next. . .

I had a lot of fun writing Something About You. Despite the fact that there’s a suspense element, that’s just a subplot—a device that brings these two strong-willed characters who allegedly “can’t stand each other” together. Which is, of course, where the humor comes in. This book was a challenge for me to write at times because I had to figure out when it was okay to be light and funny, and when my characters needed to be serious. In the end, I think I figured it out. I hope. ;-) Here’s a brief excerpt from the book, so you can judge for yourself.

“And then I heard the door open, so I ran and looked out the peephole,” Cameron said.

“Just being nosy?”

The sarcasm seemed to reinvigorate her. “And thank goodness for that,” she said. “Otherwise you wouldn’t have whatever information I know that I don’t yet realize I know.” She smiled ever so sweetly. “Besides, if I hadn’t been so nosy, Agent Pallas, you and I never would’ve had this lovely chance to reconnect.”

Wilkins coughed while taking a sip of his coffee. It sounded suspiciously like a chuckle.

Jack found her sarcasm laughable. Back when he was in Special Forces, before he’d joined the FBI, he’d interrogated foreign operatives, suspected terrorists, and members of various guerilla militias. He could certainly handle one cheeky assistant U.S. attorney. “I’m glad to see the coffee’s put a little fire back in you,” he said dryly. “Now why don’t you tell me what you saw when you were doing your civic duty and spying though the peephole?”

Wilkins held up his hand. “Um, I’m thinking maybe I should pick back up with this.”

Cameron and Jack answered simultaneously. “We’re fine.”

“I saw a man leave the room, which I’m sure you know,” she told Jack.

“Describe him.”

“I already described him to Slonsky.”

“Do it again.”

Jack saw her eyes flash. She didn’t like being told what to do. Too bad.

“Five foot eleven, maybe six feet tall,” she said. “Medium build. He wore jeans, a black blazer, and a gray hooded T-shirt pulled over his head. He had his back to me the entire time, so I never saw his face.”

“Didn’t you think the hooded T-shirt was a little odd?” Jack asked.

“I heard butt cheeks being slapped and walls that were banged so hard my teeth nearly rattled. Frankly, I’ve found this whole evening to be a little odd, Agent Pallas.”

Out of the corner of his eye, Jack could see Wilkins glance up at the ceiling while fighting off another smile.

“Are you certain about the man’s height?” Jack continued.

Cameron paused, thinking. “Yes.”

“How about his weight?”

She sighed. “I’m really bad at guessing that kind of thing.”

“Make an effort. Pretend this is something important.”

Another glare.

Cameron glanced over at Wilkins. “How much do you weigh?”

“Wait—how come Jack doesn’t have to answer that?”

“The man I saw seems closer to your build.”

“Oh, so he’s a smaller guy, then?” Jack suggested helpfully.

Wilkins turned around. “A smaller guy? I’m an inch above the national average. Besides, I’m spry.”

“Let’s try to narrow this down,” Jack regrouped. “I weigh one-eighty-five, Agent Wilkins is about one-sixty. Given that, where would you say this guy falls?”

She looked between the two men, considering this. “About one-seventy.”

Jack and Wilkins exchanged looks.

“What?” Cameron asked. “What does that tell you?”

As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Cameron Lynde has seen and heard a lot of crazy things. However, nothing prepared her for what she overhears while staying overnight in a local hotel waiting for her hardwood floors to dry. Thirty thousand hotel rooms in the city of Chicago, and Cameron Lynde managed to find one next door to a couple having a sex marathon. But that’s not all she hears; afterwards, she inadvertently hears a murder. As the only person who witnessed anything, Cameron is then questioned by CPD and the FBI, which is headed up by none other than Special Agent Jack Pallas, the man who publicly embarrassed her three years before.

Three years ago, Cameron and Jack were involved in a case concerning a dirty Chicago thug in which Jack was also the main witness after spending two years undercover. When Cameron suddenly dropped the case due to “lack of evidence” (but actually per the instructions of her boss), Jack went ballistic and made some rather choice remarks about her on national television. His actions caused him to be transferred to Nebraska. He’s finally back in Chicago and wouldn’t you know that his first case upon returning involves the woman he blames for nearly ruining his career. Jack must keep his dislike for her in check if he’s going to be able to protect his witness and solve the crime. Despite their persistent cracks at each other, working with her causes him to need to keep more than that in check.

Julie James has done it again! She has penned a smart, witty, and romantic story infused with humor, suspense, and some serious sexual tension (along with some smoking hot love scenes!). Ms. James is quickly on her way to becoming a queen of contemporary romance. In this one she pairs a confident, tough-as-nails attorney with a strong, always-in-control FBI special agent, and much snappy dialogue ensues.

Cameron is such an amazing heroine. She is smart and sassy, but underneath it all she’s still utterly feminine. She has had to cope with the devastating loss of her father and still managed to become a successful lawyer. Very admirable, that. And then there’s Jack. Sigh. Oh, Jack. I’ve heard other people use the term “sex on a stick” in reference to men and/or heroes and I think that phrase fits Jack to a T. I love that he’s all tough and alpha male, but vulnerable when it comes to the one woman he can’t resist. He’s a total protector. Cameron sums up Jack quite nicely:

...she looked him over closely right then and was satisfied to say that he looked nothing like a ham to her. [Cameron was told earlier that she looked at Jack the way a hungry Tom looked at Jerry—imagining he resembled a ham.]

More like a chocolate molten lava cake. A dessert so sinful, so luscious, so filled with inner heat it made a girl want to lick each and every crumb right off the plate. That was Jack Pallas.

This is a book that despite having an advanced copy I will go out and buy another copy just to have one with that gorgeous cover. And it absolutely fits the book. Whether you sit outside in the breeze, lay out by the pool, or curl up by a fire, Something About You is just the right book for any occasion!
