Elizabeth Hoyt is one of those rare authors that became an autobuy for me with her very first book. And even rarer still, every book she has had published since has joined her debut on my keeper shelf. Wicked Intentions, the first in her new Maiden Lane series, is no exception. She proves once again why her star will be shining bright for a very long time.

On her way home from rescuing an orphaned baby from the streets of St. Giles, Temperance Dews and her maidservant stumble upon a mysterious man with silver hair leaning over a presumably dead body. Little does Temperance know that the gentleman is none other than the notorious Lord Caire. Later, she is surprised to find him in her sitting room at the foundling home where she lives. Even more unexpected is his offer of a proposition—he has need of her familiarity with the bowels of St. Giles to find the person responsible for killing his former mistress while she needs help to find a new patron for the Home of Unfortunate Infants and Foundling Children that was established by her father and is now run by her and her youngest brother. The selfless Temperance agrees to Lord Caire’s suggestion for the sake of the children. Though she may get more than she bargained for.

Lazarus Huntington, Lord Caire, is widely known as a cold, isolated man with unusual sexual perversions, though lesser known is his acute aversion to anyone’s touch upon his body. He feels no regrets in using Temperance’s self-sacrificing mind-set to further his agenda. He’s looked for the murderer for two months and hasn’t gotten anywhere. With Temperance’s help he finally starts getting some answers, though they aren’t without a heavy price. During their search, Caire and Temperance must tackle not only the sordid inhabitants in the seediest part of London, but also their own personal demons if they’ll ever have a chance at love.

I love this book and Elizabeth Hoyt’s writing for several reasons. First, she creates some of the most complex and fascinating characters I’ve had the pleasure to read. Caire and Temperance are unique and enigmatic individuals, filled with dark secrets, and Hoyt takes her time peeling back their many layers. She feeds you information a little at a time to make you crave more—and I didn’t want to put the book down until all their secrets were revealed. Secondly, I love that she doesn’t sugar coat the setting or descriptions. They are so detailed and realistic that I could swear I could see the dirt and grime and smell the fetid streets of St. Giles. And third, she writes really beautiful lines. Here is an example of Caire’s thoughts and feelings with regards to Temperance:

He felt her tremble against him, a hare within the hawk’s grasp. She was so proper on the surface, but he knew, in a part of him beyond mind and spirit, that she had carnal depths that she struggled to hide. He wanted to explore those depths. Bring them to the light of day and revel in them. They were as much a part of her as the gold flecks in her eyes, and he longed to feast upon her cravings.

And this exchange between Caire and Temperance:

“Why me?”

“Because,” he murmured, “you draw me. Because you are kind but not soft. Because when you touch me, the pain is bittersweet. Because you cradle a desperate secret to your bosom, like a viper in your arms, and don’t let go of it even as it gnaws at your very flesh. I want to pry that viper from your arms. To suckle upon your torn and bloody flesh. To take your pain within myself and make it mine.”

There are several other story threads that are told but not concluded in this book and I can only assume that Ms. Hoyt will eventually tie up those loose ends later in the series, much like she did in her previous series. If you’re looking for a spicy, intelligent historical romance, look no further that Wicked Intentions. For me, all it takes is having Elizabeth Hoyt’s name on the book and I’ll buy it. The next book in the series, Notorious Pleasures, releases in February 2011 and can’t come soon enough for me!

Falling In Love

I fall in love easily, frequently, and oftentimes hard.

Before I continue, allow me a qualification: I define Love broadly. As a graduate student I was trained to mistrust multiple uses of the same word for different purposes. When applied to love, my friends, this is sheer hooey. Love is grand, wide, all encompassing, and generous. It cannot be confined to an individual act of passion, one type of emotion, or even a single ecstatic spiritual experience. Love is lots of things.

Now, back to falling in love.

I have a quick, eager eye for an attractive, strapping chap. This is not love. This is The Biological Imperative. Or perhaps something else. I’m not sure. What I am sure of is that about twenty-five years ago I believed this was love.

I’m not talking about those guys I passed at the ice rink or movie theater any random Friday night. No, this applied to the boy whose locker number I memorized and to whom I never spoke except through my older sister’s boyfriend. It also applied to the boy that sat behind me in math class—first algebra, then geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus—to whom I did speak quite frequently but who always dated other girls. It applied to the gorgeous exchange student I ran track with, and the boy with the perfect manners and a thick Georgian accent who moved to town just in time to ask me, the only girl in my class of 300 without a date yet, to our winter dance. And it applied to the basketball star to whom I sent a Homecoming boutonniere of red carnations, not anonymously, because I wanted him to know I adored him even though we’d never met, and he thought it was a joke from his friends.

Why did I think these were love? Because my adolescent heart felt, and it felt fully. It pounded when I anticipated seeing him. It fluttered when he turned the corner. It seized up when he met my gaze. And it ceased functioning when he spoke to me.

I am an addict. I barely drink, rarely gamble, don’t smoke, haven’t touched drugs, and don’t even own an iPhone. All of these temptations pale in comparison to my addiction. I am addicted to the feeling of falling in love. To the emotions of letting my heart go, the achy longing, the sizzling anticipatory high, the nervous energy, the deep, delicious yearning.

Just as in high school, I still fall in love a lot. Not with actual men (except my husband). I fall in love with romance heroes. Give me a great adventure, an ROTFL comedy, a sweet hometown story—any novel with a handsome, smart hero with a heart of gold and the willingness to laugh at himself, and I’m hooked.

But I do not limit this to fictional heroes.

I fall in love with puppies. And dolphins. Actually with just about any sea life. Also, horses. Sometimes caterpillars, and always butterflies. Yesterday I gave my heart to the elephant on YouTube painting a picture of an elephant holding a flower. For this too, I believe, is love. When I encounter these, my heart tightens, my eyes water, and my soul stirs.

I also fall in love with oceanscapes, crowded city streets, spectacular architecture, graceful willow trees, stately oaks, elegant pines, beautiful writing, and tall ships. I fall in love with my seven-year-old son every time he cracks a joke, speaks thoughtfully upon a matter that concerns him, or pretty much breathes.

I am a sucker for falling in love. It fills me up, and I love to be filled up.

In my debut historical romance, SWEPT AWAY BY A KISS, the hero and heroine struggle not to fall in love. She is a reformed society jade. He is (pretending to be) a French priest (he’s actually an English viscount, keeping the secret for good reasons). But they know their struggle to stay apart is futile because more than anything, they both want to fall in love. They long for it, they seek it, and they will not rest content until they have fallen, fast and hard. Simply, they need each other.

I think this is the root of the joy of falling in love. The seeking makes it worth everything, the hoping to find, to meet the need, whether that need is a life partner or a brief dalliance, a sunset or a roller coaster ride.

Last Night’s Scandal

What Lisle and Olivia discover in Scotland is much more than they could have anticipated and, possibly, what their hearts have been searching for their entire lives.

Last Night’s Scandal is Loretta Chase at her very best. The characters are vibrant, the dialogue sparkles and the story kept me riveted to the pages from beginning to end. I’ve been waiting for this book for four years, ever since the young Peregrine and Olivia burst onto the pages of Chase's Lord Perfect. These two likeable characters, and their story, are all I could have hoped for…and more.

The Viking Takes A Knight

To his way of thinking, the sooner they leave the better off he’ll be. But neither John nor Ingrith count on the attraction they feel for each other growing into a love they cannot ignore.

I love Sandra Hill’s contemporaries, but this is the first of her many historicals that I have read, and it definitely will not be the last. From the very first page, this book captured my attention. I smile, giggled, chortled and laughed out loud all the way through. The banter between John and Ingrid is hilarious, and the motley crew of secondary characters completely won me over. With sizzling love scenes and passion aplenty, The Viking Takes A Knight is a must have for your end-of-the-summer reading.

Hell, Yeah

This is the second book in Ms. Gaston’s Three Soldiers series, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is sprinkled with enough historical detail to make it interesting, but it does not detract from the love story. Allan and Marian go through a great deal of pain and strife to reach their happily ever after, and it is very well deserved. Chivalrous Captain, Rebel Mistress is a perfect addition to your end-of-summer reading.

Though this is a straight historical, unlike her previous time-travel romances, Wolff once again brings us a passionate, action-filled story with engaging characters, deep emotion, rich historical detail and enough twists and turns to keep me glued to the pages late into the night.  Cormac and Marjorie are a couple I won't soon forget.  Devil’s Highlander is the first book in Wolff’s new Clan MacAlpin series. I can’t wait to find out what she has in store for us next!

Marcus Lodewijk Schenkenberg van Mierop, better known as Marcus Schenkenberg (born August 4, 1968) is a model, actor, singer, writer, and TV personality born in Stockholm, Sweden to Dutch parents. He has a citizenship with Netherlands, but has been based in NYC since 1991. Marcus was discovered by American photographer Barry King, while roller skating in Venice Beach, California in 1989. He is approximately 6 feet 3 inches tall. Most known for his Calvin Klein advertisements, he has also modeled for Valentino, Donna Karan, Versace and Giorgo Armani.

He speaks fluently in Swedish, English, Dutch, Italian and French. Wouldn’t you love to hear him whisper in your ear?

Congratulations on your newest book, Till Dawn With the Devil, hitting the shelves! Can you tell us a little bit about the story?


In TILL DAWN WITH THE DEVIL, readers will learn that Reign’s notoriety began with his young wife’s accidental death. Years later, he is still being quietly shunned by London’s polite society because many believe he murdered his wife, and Reign has done nothing to quell the gossips. After a disastrous marriage, Reign is unwilling to tie himself to another woman, and his wicked reputation has its advantages. That is, until he glimpses a young woman with pretty blue bows on her dress. When he gives in to his curiosity and crosses the ballroom to find her, Reign is unaware that he is pursuing a lady that is connected to his family’s scandalous past.


Sigh. I loved that he was drawn to her and her pretty blue bows. :) As you can tell from my review, I adore characters with physical flaws such as Sophia’s impaired vision. Was her character difficult for you to write?


At times. The cobwebs and shadows that obscured Sophia’s vision could shift so the severity of her impairment varied throughout the book. Sophia was too independent to allow this to slow her down so I had to constantly remind myself to focus on her other senses.


Here at The Romance Dish, we love to dish about heroes...and your Lords of Vice are incredibly sexy heroes. How did you come up with the concept for this series?


The original concept for the story started out with a Seven Deadly Sins theme. However, around the time I was working on the proposal, I had read that Kathryn Caskie was coming out with a Seven Deadly Sins series. Since mine was still a work-in-progress, I dumped the cardinal sins but kept the seven rogues.


I'm so glad you decided to keep those seven rogues. *wink* And speaking of said rogues, the Lords of Vice have terrific nicknames (which I love!) to suit each of their personalities. Did you come up with their nicknames or their full names first?


Great question! I actually came up with the nicknames first.


You have been really blessed with the gorgeous covers for this series. Did you have any input in them?


My input is very limited. For every book, I turn in character descriptions, and the art department takes it from there.


Can you tell us what a typical writing day is like for you?


I try to work around the kids’ schedules so my writing day can vary. During the school year, I’m up at 6:30 am. While the kids are getting dressed, I catch up on email and promotional tasks. I usually settle down to write by 8:30 am and I’ll work until 12:30 pm. Sometimes I use my afternoons for research, but it depends on how much progress that I’ve made that morning. The kids are home by 4:00 pm so I turn off the laptop for a few hours to take care of homework, dinner, and working out. If I’m closing in on a deadline, I also write in the evening. It’s my favorite time to write so if I’m in the “zone” I’ll work all night.


You certainly have your priorities in order! What is your very favorite part about being a writer?


Working barefoot. My feet are allergic to high heels.


LOL! I love that! And I can so relate as I hate wearing heels, too. :)


Everyone has those special auto-buy authors whose books they never miss. Who are some of your favorite authors to read?


My auto-buys are Linda Howard, Jennifer Crusie, Jayne Ann Krentz, Gaelen Foley, Anne Stuart, and Lorraine Heath.

‘Friends to lovers’ and ‘enemies to lovers’ are two of my favorite themes in a romance novel. What are some of your favorite themes to read about and why?


Beauty and the beast and revenge tales are two of my favorite themes. I’ve been drawn to both themes since I was a teenager. These stories tend to be stark, full of angst and tortured characters. By the end of the book, the hero and heroine have truly earned their happily ever after.


Ooooh, I love a good revenge tale, too. We know that writing is a big part of your life, but what sort of activities/hobbies do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?


Not surprisingly—I’m a voracious reader. When I have a free moment, I usually have a book within reach. I also love to cook. I find it soothing, and it’s just another way to express my creativity. I have three teenagers so I spend a lot of time with them playing video games and watching movies.


It was such a pleasure to meet you in person at this year’s RWA conference in Orlando! Did you have a good time? What are some of your favorite memories from the conference?


Oh, it was great to finally meet you in person, too! I had a fantastic time at the conference, but there never seems to be enough time to do everything that I’ve circled on the workshop schedule. As for favorite memories, I thoroughly enjoyed the keynote speeches. Getting some face-to-face time with my editor is always something that I look forward to each year, too. However, the best part of the conference was meeting readers. I was really touched by everyone’s enthusiasm for the Lords of Vice series.


I'm with you about not having enough time to do everything. This first timer was certainly overwhelmed! LOL!


Can you share with us what is coming up next for you on the writing front?


Once I finished the edits for AFTER DARK WITH A SCOUNDREL, I’ll go back to working on the synopses for the remaining Lords of Vice books. I should have more details about the next books in the coming months.

The Teen Menu

It's been a crazy busy month with the RWA National Conference and associated travel. One of the highlights of the conference was seeing Simone Elkeles win the RITA for her young adult novel, Perfect Chemistry, and Erica O'Rourke win the Golden Heart for her YA manuscript, Unchosen.

A consequence of two weeks away from home, time filled to bursting with a conference to-do list, was the fact that I only finished reading one YA novel this month. But it was a good one. Num8ers (yes, it's spelled with an "8" instead of a "b") by Rachel Ward (the author, not the actress) has a bit of a paranormal element to it -- the heroine, Jem, sees the dates of people's deaths when she looks into their eyes -- but that's not really what the book is about. It's more of the story of forgotten and overlooked youths, the kids who have been dealt a really crappy hand in life. Since Jem's mother's death of a drug overdose when Jem was six (an event that led Jem to realize what the numbers meant), she's bounced around from foster home to foster home and never felt like anyone really cared about her. She's built understandable walls around herself, both because of her life situation and the fact that she doesn't want to get close to people when she knows the dates of their deaths every time she looks at them. When you refuse to interact with others, people begin to get certain ideas about who you are as a person, even if those ideas are completely wrong.

Jem's life changes when she meets, befriends and eventually falls for a boy called Spider. He's so full of energy, it's infectious. She tries not to get involved because of his ever-present number, but her efforts prove fruitless. During a day trip in London, Jem foresees a chilling event when she realizes all of the people around her have the same number in their eyes. She grabs Spider and runs, and that choice leads to a chain of events that will have you turning pages and rooting for this most unlikely of couples despite what you suspect may await you toward the end of the book.

Oddly, I'm not a book crier. A movie crier, yes. Book crier, no. Only rarely does a book even make me tear up, but this one did. Added to that is an epilogue that has me eagerly anticipating reading the sequel, Numbers 2: The Chaos, out now.

Lila, thank you so much for joining us today. First off, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I was born at Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I’m married to a wonderful, totally supportive man and we have three children. I adore history and travel. I’ve been to four continents so far. Formerly a law clerk, I used to work in a high-end law firm and specialized in litigation. I quit after my first child was born. Now I’m blessed to have the best job in the world. I get to write love stories about gorgeous men and strong women in historical settings. Best of all, I get to share my historical romances with readers.


Wow, four continents? You sure do get around. I know you are very excited about the release of your debut book. Please tell us a little bit about AWAKENED BY A KISS.

AWAKENED BY A KISS is the first in my Fiery Tales series. It’s a collection of three classic fairy tales, scandalously retold. I’ve taken Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood and Puss in Boots and have given them my own romantic and sexy twists. This steamy historical romance anthology was inspired by Charles Perrault’s fairy tales. He was the creator of The Tales of Mother Goose, and I set this book in his lifetime – when the genre of fairy tales was born!

I have to say that I just love your twist on fairy tales. Where did you get the inspiration for turning classic fairy tales into sensual romance reads and why are you drawn to classic fairy tales?

Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are the first romances I ever read. Charles Perrault was the first to write them down. Taken from folklore, he added morals to his fairy tales and soon the genre of fairy tales became wildly popular. I know a lot about the time period in this book, when fairy tales were created. It was a time that was elegant and opulent with a healthy dose of salaciousness. The realm was ruled by a lusty King, and his court, like their monarch, were connoisseurs of the carnal arts. The pursuit of sinful pleasures was a pastime. Sex, an art form. That made it easy to give these stories a sexual spin.


We LOVE call stories here at The Romance Dish. Would you share your call story with us?

I actually never got “the call”. My agent sent me “the email”. We’d been emailing back and forth that day about various projects. Then about mid-afternoon my agent sent me another email. I opened it, read it and screamed. It was summer vacation, and my kids were home. Startled, they came running into my office. After assuring them that I hadn’t fallen, seen a spider, or lost my mind – I reread the email three more times before I was sure I’d read it correctly. Berkley was interested in my historical romance AWAKENED BY A KISS! It took a few more days until the deal was finalized. I officially sold to Berkley the day before I was to attend the Romance Writers of America conference last year. I packed, jumped on a plane, and arrived in Washington still reeling. I had an amazing time at the conference. It was such a thrill getting to meet my wonderful editor and agent in person!


WOW, I bet you were on cloud nine during the entire conference. Did do anything special to celebrate your sale?

I celebrated with family and friends when I got back home. A nice restaurant. Champagne. And dark chocolate! Lots of dark chocolate.


I understand your second book THE PRINCESS IN HIS BED will be released November 2, 2010, and that you have sold another fiery tale book scheduled to be release in October 2011. Congratulations on these sales!!!

Thank you! I’m so thrilled and excited that the Fiery Tale series will continue. THE PRINCESS IN HIS BED features more scorching fairy tale retellings —“The Emperor’s New Clothes,” “The Ugly Duckling, and “The Princess and the Pea,” wickedly retold and renamed, “The Marquis’ New Clothes”, “The Lovely Duckling” and “The Princess and the Diamonds”. This book is based on fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen.

In 2011 a very different Fiery Tale will hit the shelves! This book won’t be a collection, but a single fairy tale retelling. Which one, you ask? One of the most beloved fairy tales of all – Cinderella – as you’ve never read before! It will be just as romantic and steamy as AWAKENED BY A KISS and THE PRINCESS IN HIS BED. This Cinderella tale has a sinfully delicious hero and a strong quick-witted heroine who will make him lose his heart, not to mention some scorching hot love scenes! And yes, there is a ball, a glass slipper and a loveable, yet highly opinionated fairy godmother and a cast of eccentric secondary characters to keep the hero and heroine on their toes.

Since you will now have three books published in just over one year, how do you manage your daily life, what with being a writer, mother, wife, and traveler? What is a typical day for you?

I take the kids to school and grab a coffee at my local Starbucks on the way home. Coffee is a must. I walked through a snow storm to get coffee once. I do most of my writing when the kids are in school. At times the muse disappears on me. Then I visit on Facebook and Twitter until it returns. Like most mothers, I juggle career and family. And I never ever miss out on an opportunity to jump on a plane and travel. In a few weeks, I’m going to London, England. I can’t wait!


What authors do you reach for when you need to just escape life? Do you have a particular book that is a comfort read for you?

Loretta Chase, Lisa Kleypas, Elizabeth Hoyt, Cheryl Holt and Kathryn Smith, to name a few. Any of their books are a treat to my soul.


Those are some wonderful authors and ones I truly enjoy too.

You attended the RomCom Convention in Denver. How was your first experience at a conference as a published author?

It was wonderful! I had so much fun! I’ve been to the RWA conference many times, but always as an aspiring author. It was so exciting being at RomCon, and talking about my book with others who love romance! I met so many lovely people. My favorite events were Speed Dating and Sexcapades.


Speaking of RWA, it was such a delight to meet you in Orlando. Please share with us one of your favorite moments from this year's RWA?

There were so many wonderful moments that happened at RWA this year. But there was one particular moment I'm sure I'll never forget! This year I got to participate in my first Berkley signing! I didn't have books, as AWAKENED BY A KISS wasn't released until Aug. 3rd (and the signing was on July 30th). But I had bookmarks and sample chapters to sign, and well, I had to pinch myself. Looking around the room, I couldn't believe it! I, me, moi was part of a signing with these uber-talented authors --- including The Nora Roberts! I even got to speak to her briefly before the crowds came in. It was an awesome event and a dream come true!


It was a wonderful experience to meet THE Nora, but I can't imagine how you felt signing in the same room as her!!

And she finds him a handy man on the scene when two other unexpected arrivals appear: the twin girls to whom she gave birth as a surrogate for a wealthy couple. She is a bit suspicious when she learns that Chance has been named co-guardian, but her concerns are lulled by his ease with the six-year-old twins Lace and Skye, plus she is distracted by her barely controlled desire for Chance.

Poor Chance is having his own struggles. His return to Earth has reawakened all his human needs. Every inappropriate thought results in the loss of a multi-colored wing feather, and he wants Queisha so badly that feathers are dropping all over the place. His beloved doesn’t believe in angels, and Chance doesn’t think the time is right to confront her with her error. He knows Queisha’s life is about to become even more complicated by the greedy relatives of the Fitzgeralds, the twins’ parents.

This is the second of Blair’s Works Like Magick books, and while some characters from the first book appear in Bedeviled Angel, the second book can easily be read as a stand-alone. It is the kind of light read with sexy love scenes that readers expect from Blair, and I predict it will leave her many fans with a smile on their faces and a satisfied sigh.

I have read and been entertained by some of Blair’s books, but I am not a dedicated reader of paranormals. I confess that I had problems suspending disbelief with this one. It seemed too convenient that Chance’s first angelic assignment was as Queisha’s guardian, replacing, one presumes, the angel who had that duty until Chance’s arrival. Chance also seemed too fully human for one who has spent eight years in eternity. I also found myself longing for a character named Jane or Bob or something equally ordinary. Finally, the editor in me wanted to strike through at least every third adjective. These concerns were strong enough to pull me out of the story repeatedly. But Chance and Queisha are likeable characters, Angus is a delight, and the twins are sweethearts. Readers who are more skilled than I at navigating paranormal worlds may find this a fun, frothy read with some heartwarming moments.
