His Life is like a Country Song

Green Beret Captain “Big John” Bryson returns from deployment to learn his girlfriend cheated and his dog died. Turns out, his ex lied and dumped his beloved mutt, Boss, at the shelter. Forget the ex, John just wants his dog back.

An abuse survivor, Elizabeth Carroll is singing a happier tune without a man in her life. She has her work as a counselor and The Oasis, a trio of tiny homes on her property where abused women can get a fresh start. She also has her rescue dog—or did—until his former owner wants him back. After John intervenes to protect one of her residents, Elizabeth offers him and Boss housing at The Oasis. But who will protect Elizabeth’s heart from the charms of the off-key singing, 6’5” teddy bear of a soldier?

Fighting for the love John desperately wanted all his life has given him more battle scars than his dangerous missions. He and Elizabeth could be an opposites-attract love story, if only John can break through the guarded beauty’s defenses. If he can’t earn her trust and heal her invisible wounds, their unlikely duet will end on a bad note. With Boss’s help, can they create the perfect harmony to give them the future they’ve both dreamed of?

PJ's Thoughts:

Tracy Brody blends laugh-out-loud humor and sweet romance with the emotional depth of heartache, past abuse, and hopeful healing in this new contemporary romcom that had me laughing, shedding a few tears, and sighing with satisfaction when the final page was turned.

John can sing off-key to me any old time. I adored him. In this character, Brody has created a battle-tested warrior with a marshmallow center. He's tough when needed - a protector - but also gentle and kind when the occasion calls for it. The care he exhibits with the women at The Oasis, his patience with Elizabeth, his devotion to duty and honor, and his love for his dog would have sealed the deal for me...even before he started serenading me off-key. And speaking of his dog, Boss not only stole the hearts of all the characters in the book, and mine, he also stole every scene in which he appeared.

Elizabeth is a complex character with a traumatic past (see below for the author's note) who devotes herself to helping other women who have experienced similar situations. I admired her courage to break away from those who had hurt her and embark upon a healing path. She and John are so good together. The author leads them on a gradual journey to friendship, trust, and eventually a deeper, emotional relationship. I loved the humor between them while appreciating the fine line they walked when feelings began to deepen. The sensitivity given to her fear was commendable and, again, in those situations, John's actions and attitude were all I could have hoped for.

Kudos to Brody for crafting a story that, although it deals with difficult subject matter and is heart-wrenching at times, addresses those issues head-on while also maintaining it's central focus of humor, heart, healing, and hope. I give this one my enthusiastic recommendation.

One additional note. Each chapter in this book begins with a song title (and artist) that sets the tone for what's to come. I have no idea how long it took for the author to research and choose these titles but they are brilliant...and kept me humming throughout the book.

Trigger Warning

Note from author in front of book

"This is a romantic comedy book; however, it also deals with the sensitive subjects of physical and sexual abuse. Elizabeth is an abuse survivor and works with other women who've left abusive situations. While the abuse is not shown on the page, it is discussed in the book and is part of what Elizabeth has to overcome through counseling, EMDR therapy, and with encouragement from John.

The intent is to show women supporting one another and that there is help and hope for healing. Should the idea of a character sharing abuse in their past be a trigger for you, this may not be the book for you - at least not at this time. I do hope you will get to a place of happiness, joy, and strength."

Blessings,

Tracy

THE BACHELOR meets MISS CONGENIALITY: When an Army vet who's looking for love begins falling for the date planner of the reality dating program he's set to star on, the show's producers trick the jaded staffer into posing as a contestant for one night to save the show's tarnished reputation. To keep her job, she needs this season's star to find love. He needs her to give him her heart to get his happy ending. What can go wrong when she gets a rose?  Then another?

PJ's Thoughts:

Looking for a fast, fun, feel-good, romp to kick off your 2022 romance reading? Have I got a book for you! Tracy Brody, one of my go-to authors for intense, action-packed, military romantic suspense novels shows off a different side of her creativity with this gem of a story that kept me grinning, and frequently laughing out loud, from beginning to end.

Nate never set out to be the Bachelor - he has his meddling sisters to thank for that - but the fact is, he really wants to find love and the money the show offers him will allow him to start his own business. He's one of the good ones: honorable, kind, there for the right reasons...and falling for someone who is not one of the women cast on the show for him to date.

After years of working behind the scenes, CJ a/k/a Cecilia finally has her shot at achieving her dream of becoming a screenwriter. All she has to do is make sure this season of the reality show she works on goes smoothly and Nate finds the woman of his dreams. That woman was never supposed to be her!

Oh my gosh, I loved these two so much! Brody created two characters I couldn't help but cheer for. They're fun, relatable, good people with layers that give them depth, thrown into a situation somewhat out of their control that offers up a plethora of opportunities for humor, growth, and emotional awakening. I couldn't get enough of them.

If you're a fan of The Bachelor reality television show (I admit it, I'm addicted), you already know that they're a fertile playground for drama, humor, angst, and tears - so many tears - as contestants vie for one-on-one time with that season's bachelor, attempt to sabotage group dates, shamelessly hog camera time, and, oh yeah, hope to find their forever love. Brody incorporates all of that and more into her fictional reality series with impeccable comedic timing, over-the-top secondary characters, heart-tugging emotion, razor-sharp wit, sigh-worthy declarations, awkward situations, and did I mention humor? So delicious. So addictive. So much fun.

Whether you're a fan of The Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise or not, Tracy Brody's Faking it with the Bachelor is a fast, fun, feel-good ride worth taking. I highly recommend it.

A TRAUMA NURSE THE CARTEL WANTS DEAD

Cassidy O’Shea overheard what should have been a patient’s deathbed confession—except the cartel hitman lived. She’s lost two years of her life being in witness protection, but nothing will stop her from attending the funeral of Hal, her ex-stepfather and the only father figure she’s ever known. Except her quick trip to Fort Bragg is exactly what an assassin hoped for.

AN ELITE SOLDIER WANTING JUSTICE

Learning his Special Ops mentor was murdered, AJ Rozanski’s suspicions turn to Hal’s mysterious stepdaughter who appeared at the funeral. He’s stunned to learn her testimony is needed to bring down the head of a major arms cartel. When the marshals request the Bad Karma team’s aid to persuade Cassidy to stay in the Witness Protection program, AJ is determined to convince her to do the right thing—and to find Hal’s killer. He’s supposed to be protecting her, not falling for a woman he may never see again.

A PAWN IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM

An attempt on her life sends Cassidy to the only people she trusts—and back into AJ’s arms. His team sets a trap for the assassin who killed Hal, but that won’t end the threats to Cassidy and her family. The only way to escape spending her life in WITSEC is for the hitman she helped save to testify against the head of the arms cartel, except he’s not motivated to talk. Can she outlast and outwit him in a deadly game of survival?

PJ's Thoughts:

If you enjoy military romantic suspense, you should definitely be reading Tracy Brody. With her strong characterization, military knowledge, intricately-woven suspense, and action-packed stories, she's an author who has steadily climbed my list of romantic suspense favorites with each book she's published.

As with the previous books in her Bad Karma series, In the Wrong Sights pulled me in from the beginning and kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. Brody has yet to write a book I've been able to put down.

Cassidy and AJ are so vividly depicted. I felt an immediate connection with both of them, which made their perilous journey, and unanticipated feelings for one another, all the more intense.  Cassidy, in particular, elicited deep emotional responses in me. Unforeseen circumstances snatched her from her happy, successful life and embroiled her in a whirlpool of life-threatening danger that threatens to pull her under. She's so realistic, so relatable that I couldn't help but put myself in her shoes and feel every ounce of her frustration, fear, anger, and determination to take back her life. AJ and his fellow Bad Karma soldiers are called in to protect her and, of course, they're up to the challenge but this is no easy fix. The bad guys are really bad and Brody takes the reader on a harrowing thrill ride before we reach the very hard-won happy ending. I was with them every step of the way.

In the Wrong Sights is the 4th book in Brody's Bad Karma series and while there will be many familiar faces for fans of the series, the book stands well on its own. Having said that, however, I do enthusiastically recommend all the books in the series.

AN FBI AGENT WITH SECRETS

FBI Linguist Angela Hoffman’s expertise and previous experience send her undercover on a critical operation. Only when her mission converges with the target of the Bad Karma Special Ops team, she is recognized by Tony Vincenti. A joint task force is formed to track a dangerous terrorist, and, as they work together again, Angela’s prior attraction to Tony escalates. Only her past work and betrayals eliminate any chance of her having a serious romantic relationship--even with the enigmatic soldier who makes her long for the kind of family she never had.

AN ELITE SOLDIER WANTING TRUST

Undercover operations are Sergeant First Class Tony Vincenti’s specialty. He previously played Angela’s lover. This time, he’s hoping after they wrap this mission to see what can happen between them for real. However, when they learn of a potential attack, all hopes for a romantic interlude are put on hold while they race to find the target of a dirty bomb.

A FUTURE WORTH RISKING EVERYTHING FOR

Tony is certain Angela is everything he wants in a woman, but first he has to earn her trust and convince her that, despite her past, they can have a future. When Angela’s fears become reality and she’s targeted by a deadly threat, she has to trust him with her secrets so he can protect her life. But will that trust run deep enough to convince her once and for all he’s a shot worth taking?

PJ's Thoughts:

Military romantic suspense is one of my favorite romance categories and Tracy Brody is a new author I'm enjoying. Brody combines well-developed characters with sizzling romance, edge-of-your-seat danger, snappy banter, and realistic suspense, then wraps it all up within a well-researched military unit. It's clear she's taken the time to do this sub-genre justice.

I enjoyed Tony and Angela's romance. These are two well-matched individuals with a whole lot of sexual chemistry. But, more than that, they like one another, respect each other's abilities, and are good teammates, on and off the job. Still, I sure did love that chemistry. Brody is very good at building sexual tension.

Brody is also good at building other types of tension and there's plenty to go around in this book. From terrorist bombs, to an attempt on Angela's life, to secret missions abroad, there was plenty of danger and potential chaos to keep me flipping pages.

If you enjoy military romantic suspense with interesting characters and life or death consequences, give A Shot Worth Taking a try. It's the third story in the Bad Karma Special Ops series but stands well on its own. You will, however, meet several characters from the first two books and I recommend those stories as well. Desperate Choices (a 128-page extended length novella), introduces the series and tells Bad Karma leader, Ray Lundgren's story while the first full-length novel, Deadly Aim, introduces the entire team and tells the story of Spec Ops sniper, Mack Hanlon and Black Hawk pilot, Kristie Donovan. That one kept me reading way into the night.
