Today's Special - - Jodi Thomas Wild Horse Springs Tour

Wild Horse Springs
By Jodi Thomas
Publisher: Harlequin HQN
Release Date: January 24, 2017

Jodi Thomas takes her readers back to Crossroads, Texas, for the fifth book in her Ransom Canyon series. Sheriff Dan Brigman has devoted himself to protecting the citizens of his town and to his daughter Lauren, but with Lauren on her own in Dallas after college, he is newly aware of the empty spaces in his life. No one would ever think that a blue, rhinestone-studded cowgirl boot in the middle of the highway would be the key to adventure and romance for a lonely lawman, but so it proves to be. Tracking down the boot’s owner leads Dan to Brandi Malone, a gorgeous country singer-songwriter who has a two-week gig at a dive just over the county line from Crossroads. From his first sight of her, Brandi has Dan remembering that he is more than a sheriff and a father.

Some might describe Brandi Malone as a drifter as she moves from town to town, performing a couple of weeks in one place before she moves to the next. But Brandi knows she is running from an unbearable loss and from a family in which she was always a misfit. Dan Brigman makes her feel as if she really is the wild, free spirit that he believes her to be. Dan may be just what she needs for the moment, but she and Dan both know that what they are having is a fling not a relationship. However, things have a way of changing when hearts get involved.

Lauren Brigman feels like a failure at twenty-five. After law school, she turned to her dreams of writing rather than take the bar exam, but so far, she is a singularly unproductive writer. Her personal life is no more satisfactory. She has allowed her friends-with-benefits connection with life-long pal Tim O’Grady to continue more from inertia than from affection, and she knows Tim wants more than she can give him. Her heart has never forgotten Lucas Reyes, her first love, but they have lost touch. When Tim calls her with the news that their protégé, eighteen-year-old Thatcher Jones has been arrested, Lauren seizes the opportunity to go home to Crossroads to help Thatcher and to find herself.

Thatcher was only trying to help a little girl who was obviously in trouble, but he ended up in jail, placing the future his benefactors had helped him plan in jeopardy. As if that were not enough, he is kidnapped from his jail cell by the sleaze bags who think he saw too much when he followed the little girl home. Fighting his way free, he finds sanctuary in the home of Cody Winslow, a Texas Ranger and near legend.

Cody is in the hospital recovering from his effort to outrun the demons that have plagued him since the standoff with drug runners that left two of his closest friends dead and Cody on the inactive list. He almost accomplished on his wild night ride in a winter storm what the drug runners had failed to do, but Tess Adams, a Park ranger who was stargazing nearby with a troop of little girls, heard his curses and saved his life. Now Cody is claiming that Tess is his wife and Tess is wondering if that life sentence may be just what she wants most. But before these two can settle their future, they have to protect Thatcher from the thugs who are after him.

Wild Horse Springs is another ensemble romance from gifted storyteller Jodi Thomas. Fans of the Ransom Canyon series will be pleased to see series regular, good-guy sheriff Dan Brigman finally get a romance of his own. Dan’s relationship with Brandi is the central love story, and it develops in stolen moments woven among Dan’s professional duties. Dan and Brandi are older characters who have paid heavy dues, and they easily win the reader’s affection. They deserve their HEA. I only wish that it had been less abrupt and truncated. Cody and Tess are also engaging characters with the kind of quirky appeal that Thomas does so well. Tenderness and humor balance the tension in the relationships of both couples.

Lauren’s future is left open. Lucas is back, but it is unclear exactly where they stand. Whether her friendship with Tim can survive their time as lovers and Lauren’s rejection of him in that role is also unclear. Presumably readers will have answers to these questions as well as more about Thatcher in future novels in the series. The sixth book, Indigo Lake will be released July 18, 2017.

I am a huge fan of Jodi Thomas’s stories that suggest everyone, even the misfits, deserves love and happiness. I always fall in love with her characters who are never cookie-cutter types. Her strengths are clear in this book, but the ending just felt rushed and less satisfying than usual to me. I do recommend Wild Horse Springs to readers who like ensemble romances with a cast of memorable and different characters, but I don’t think this one is quite up to Thomas’s usual stellar work.

Wyoming Brave
Except 5

She did sleep, finally. She went downstairs a little late for breakfast, hoping Ren would already be gone. But he was just getting up from the table.

He glared at her. "We keep regular hours here for meals," he told her curtly. "If you come sashaying down late, you don't eat."

"But, Mr. Ren..." Delsey protested.

"Rules aren't broken here," Ren returned. He looked at Merrie, who was stiff as a board. "You heard me. Delsey will tell you what hours mealtimes are. Don't be late again."
He shoved his hat down over his eyes, shouldered into his heavy coat and went out without another single word.

Merrie was fighting back tears.

"Oh, honey, I'm sorry, Delsey said. She drew the girl close and rocked her while she cried. "He's just getting over a broken engagement, and he's bitter. He wasn't like this before. He's basically a kind man..."

He said my cross was stupid and I wasn't to let it show again," she sobbed. "What kind of man is he?"

Delsey rocked her some more and sighed. "It's a long story. He went to a famous college up north on a scholarship and a professor there changed his mind about religion. He was an excellent student, but when he came home, he was suddenly antireligion. He sounded off to his mother about her Christmas tree and her faith, and had her running away in tears. Then he overheard her telling Randall that Ren was as cold and heartless as his father, whom she'd divorced. She was proud of Randall, because he was a better son. Ren just left. He's never spoken to his mother again."

Merrie pulled back and looked at the older woman through red eyes. "She divorced his father?"

She nodded. She handed Merrie tissues to dry her eyes with. "His father owned this ranch, but it was a hard life. His mother had very expensive tastes, so the story goes, and Randall's father wanted her. So she ran away with him."

Merrie grimaced. “It’s a huge ranch now.”

“Yes, it is. But it was small and in debt when Ren showed up at the door just after that Christmas. He and his father began to work together to build up a breeding herd. Ren knew business, with his Harvard business degree, and his father knew cattle.” She smiled. “It took fifteen years, but they diversified into oil and mining, as well as cattle, and they built a small empire here. Ren’s very proud of it. His father was, too. He died two years ago.” She sighed. “Ren wouldn’t even let his mother come to the funeral. He’s still bitter about what he heard her say. He won’t speak to her at all.”

"It isn't human, to hold a grudge like that," Merrie said quietly. "He seems such a cold man," she added softly.

“There’s a kind man under all that ice. It’s just that he’s been frozen for a long time.”

The last thing Merrie wants is a devastatingly handsome man like Ren lurking around her. He's too experienced, too appealing for her already shot nerves. Review - - Hit the Spot

Hit the Spot
By J. Daniels
Publisher: Forever
Release Date: December 6, 2016

Tori Rivera thinks Jamie McCade is rude, arrogant, and worst of all . . . the sexiest man she's ever laid eyes on. His reputation as a player is almost as legendary as his surfing skills. No matter how her body heats up when he's around, she's determined not to be another meaningless hookup.

Jamie McCade always gets what he wants. The sickest wave. The hottest women. And Tori, with her long legs and smart mouth, is definitely the hottest one. He knows Tori wants him-hell, most women do-but she won't admit it. After months of chasing and one unforgettable kiss, it's time for Jamie to raise the stakes.

Jamie promises that soon Tori won't just want him in her bed, she'll be begging for it-and he might be right. Somehow he's found the spot in her heart that makes her open up like never before. But with all she knows about his past, can she really trust what's happening between them? Is Jamie playing for keeps or just playing to win?

Hit the Spot by J. Daniels does just that and more. If you are looking for a read that is intense in both its heat index and characters, this one is for you. It is the second in J. Daniel’s series which means I have a book to catch up on and two more to look ahead to. Jamie McCade and Tori Rivera’s relationship is hot from the start but they don’t just stop at the sexual sizzle. Their banter and wit help to carry the story. For me any romance novel is less of a story if not for the main character's’ family and friends to see them through. Hit the Spot has a great group of friends and family who have one another’s back.

I would give this a 4 out of 5 stars for its heat and characters.

Just the Right Match

Finding the right match for the hero and heroine is one of the toughest and most exciting parts of writing a novel.  The hero of INTO THE FIRESTORM is Luke Brodie, one of my strongest, toughest, sexiest heroes.

Luke, a former special forces soldier, is a bounty hunter who works at Brodie Operations Security Services, BOSS, Inc., in Seattle.  A fat $600,000 is the 20% bail enforcement fee he'll collect if he brings in international criminal, Rudy Vance.  Luke is a womanizer par excellence and a dedicated bachelor.  But he is also a complex man, one who has given up the idea of having a normal life.

Fortunately, Emma Cassidy showed up, a strong woman in her own right, a fighter, a lady determined to achieve the goal she has set for herself--bringing a murderer to justice, a criminal who is threatening her family.

Emma is also hunting Vance.  It's been almost a year since she arrived at her sister's home to find the housekeeper murdered and her young niece the victim of Vance's sick assault.

Emma is determined to find Vance and make him pay.  And no one--not even the infamous Luke Brodie--is going to stop her.

I loved that Emma was just as determined as Luke, perhaps more so.  I liked that Luke came to admire her.  Though Emma is nowhere near his equal in skill and physical strength, she is smart and she has learned to handle herself well enough to keep up with him.

The attraction between them was magnetic from the start.  Add to that, the sexual heat both are fighting to control is a battle they are sure to lose.

Finding the right woman for Luke was fun, and of course setting them off on a dangerous, desperate adventure added to the mix.

I hope you enjoy INTO THE FIRESTORM and if you haven’t read INTO THE FURY and INTO THE WHIRLWIND, the first two BOSS Inc. novels, you’ll give them a try.

Till next time, all best and happy reading.
Kat

One randomly chosen person who leaves a comment before 11:00 PM, January 21, 2017 will receive a copy of INTO THE FURY. (U.S. addresses only)

At Brodie Operations Security Service, Inc., following your instincts is company policy . . .

M. Cassidy—Luke Brodie had heard the name before, some novice bounty hunter working Seattle, catching tricky skips with more success than a newcomer should expect. But the dark curls, sparkly top, and impressive cleavage were not what Brodie had pictured.

Emma Cassidy is tough and smart and sexy as hell. She’s also popping up a step ahead of him every time he’s close to the capture he wants most . . . and there’s no room for learning on the trail of this monster.

Emma has idolized Luke Brodie, the bounty hunter who can bring anyone in. The big man in the soft shoes, with a face like a fallen angel and a reputation for breaking hearts. Watching him in action is intoxicating. But her fight with Rudy Vance is fiercely personal. If he gets too close, Brodie will find out just how ferocious she can be . . .

Review - - Wicked Cowboy Charm

Wicked Cowboy Charm
By Carolyn Brown
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Release Date: January 31, 2017

Deke Sullivan has quite a reputation in Dry Creek, Texas, charming and cruising through every girl within a six zipcode radius; however, newcomer Josie Dawson isn’t interested in being charmed or cruised. Josie is determined to make a go of her business and buying some great bulls is the start; however, Deke has some similar ideas for his business, and the two of them end up at the same Montana ranch to buy the same bulls, then end up snowed in by a blizzard for the next several days.

Forced to be cozy with tall, brawny Texas man-candy is harrowing to say the least; and it doesn’t help that the little old man selling the bulls is a bit of a matchmaker himself. Josie does her damnedest to keep things professional and cool. Deke, however, is thrilled by the circumstances, being deep down he’s really a one-woman kind of man who thinks he’s finally found the right woman, if he can just convince her he’s sincere.

This was a fun, sweet read. You can’t help but root for Deke, who is a sweet charmer who is as good with animals and babies as he is with skittish women with trust issues. Carolyn Brown is a dependable read on a rainy or snowy day, while curled up with hot chocolate and fuzzy pajamas. It just makes you feel good all over. Another solid installment of the Lucky Penny Ranch series.

Review Tour - - Those Texas Nights

Those Texas Nights
By Delores Fossen
Publisher: HQN
Release Date: December 27, 2016

The Granger siblings thought they'd left their ranching days behind, until fate sends them home to Wrangler's Creek, Texas—and into the passionate arms of those they'd least expect…

It's some run of bad luck when Sophie Granger loses her business and gets left at the altar all in one day. Desperate to not appear jilted, Sophie begs Clay McKinnon, Wrangler's Creek's smoking-hot police chief, to pretend they're having an affair. But Clay refuses, leaving Sophie to retreat to the family ranch to lick her wounds.
Hoping to leave his disreputable past behind, Clay moved to Wrangler's Creek for a fresh start. But that looks unlikely when Sophie's ex-fiancé shows up married to Clay's impulsive kid sister. Overcome, Sophie resuggests the affair—but this time for real. Clay is hesitant. City-girl Sophie isn't usually his type. But he can't deny the desire she elicits—or his yearning to have her plant her cowboy roots for good.

Delores Fossen is fast becoming one of my go-to contemporary western romance authors. I discovered her last year and have been happily working my way through her back list. The humor, sizzle, family dynamics, and quirky characters that I've enjoyed in her earlier books are all on display in Those Texas Nights, book #1 in her new Wrangler's Creek series.

The Granger siblings are not having a good year. On the heels of Sophie being jilted by her long-time fiance, her family's company's CFO (who also happens to be their godfather) has skipped town with the company's money and the FBI suspects he was also laundering money. Everything is frozen, including Sophie and her brother, Garrett's personal assets, forcing them to move home to the family ranch (owned by their brother Roman even though he wants nothing to do with it) until everything can get straightened out. Unfortunately, that also means sharing a home with their meddling, unlikeable mother. I kept waiting for someone to drop kick her into the next county. I sure wanted to.

Months after the jilting and theft, Garrett's marriage is in trouble, single-dad Roman's tween son is rebelling, their CFO has yet to be found, Sophie's ex has eloped and is expecting a child with Clay's impulsive, immature, hormonal, younger sister, and as hard as they try, Clay and Sophie just can't seem to resist the magnetic pull between them, even though they both know nothing good can come from it.

Clay McKinnon is one of the good guys but the guilt and heartache of a past tragedy has him resisting the desire he feels for Sophie. Not to mention the fact that Sophie's spineless ex is now his brother-in-law, a fact that does not make Clay happy. He already has enough problems dealing with his insecure sister, the inept remodeling crew at his house, his loose-lipped staff, a meddling local woman who may or may not be a gypsy/witch/psychic and frankly scares him, and don't even get him started on the feral chickens. The last thing he needs to add to the mix is Sophie Granger and the drama that would come with getting involved with her but he just can't seem to help it.

I had so much fun reading this book. Though there are some serious issues at play, the tone of the book is light, with sizzling love scenes and plenty of humor ranging from soft chuckles to full-out laughter. Several characters are introduced who I hope we'll see more of in future books and novellas. I'm especially looking forward to more of Sophie's rebel brother, Roman and her 30-year-old virgin, fantasy-date obsessed, best friend, Mila. I do hope these two are going to be a couple! I'm also hoping that we'll get to see more of Sophie and Clay in future stories. I haven't had nearly enough of them.

Review - - Completely Yours

Completely Yours
By Erin Nicholas
Publisher: Forever
Release Date: December 20, 2016

Completely Yours is book one in the Opposite Attracts series.

As the series title suggests, the hero and heroine, Zach and Kiera are complete opposites.  If they were both registered on Match.com there is not the slightest possibility they would have found each other.  However, an accident at the Convention Center brings these two face to face. Zach is one of the EMTs called to the scene, and Kiera is one of the convention goers trapped beneath debris, well actually the skirt of her costume is trapped.  He runs to her rescue - and that my friends is the beginning of one hot romance.

While there’s not a great deal of angst in this book, and I for one am a romance reader who says “Hallelujah”, because, personally I don’t enjoy too much torture in my romances, there is a push/pull in the plot and in the sex, and that’s what keeps you turning the pages.

While Zach is outgoing, Kiera lives her life mostly alone and on-line. Zach’s backstory is not a pretty one and is the contributing factor to his overwhelming feeling that he has to fix everything and run everyone’s life.  Kiera is a smart talented woman who doesn’t put herself out there and doesn’t think much of herself so she retreats to the on-line world where you can be whatever and whoever you want.  Zach’s outgoingness versus Kiera’s shyness is how the author cleverly created the tension in the relationship between the two main characters. He tends to be domineering in all his relationships, and maybe that’s a defense mechanism against what he’s been through, and she is a ‘hider’ living in a world on-line.

As a reader, Kiera’s character really worked for me. I enjoyed her dialogue and I appreciated her changes throughout the book. I felt she was a perfect metaphor for today’s society.  After all, don’t many of us kind of live on-line creating what we want the world to see – real or not?  So, there you have it.  Two people who need to peel back the layers, strip away the demons and find each other.  And find each other they do.

Do you think two opposites can last in a relationship?  Or is it better to find someone who is similar to you?

Blog Tour - - Ready Set Rogue by Manda Collins

Ready Set Rogue
By Manda Collins
Publisher: St. Martin’s
Release Date: January 3, 2017

Recently deceased Lady Celeste Beauchamp, eccentric spinster and member of a wealthy, aristocratic family, leaves her home, which has been in her family for centuries, to four female scholars: Aphrodite Wareham (informally known as Ivy) a translator and student of ancient Greek texts; Sophia Hastings, a painter; Sophia’s sister Gemma, whose focus is fossils; and Lady Daphne Forsythe, a mathematician without a social filter. Given the difficulties confronting female scholars during the Regency period, the women are understandably delighted with their good fortune and set off for Beauchamp House.

Torquil “Quill” Beauchamp, Marquess of Kerr, may have been lax about visiting his aunt in recent years, but he has fond memories of her and of Beauchamp House. He refuses to believe that Lady Celeste would have been so lacking in family feeling as to leave her historic home outside the family. As head of that family, he is convinced that it is his duty to see that the four women understand that they will not be allowed to profit from what was clearly their exploitation of his aunt. With this goal in mind, the marquess leaves London for Beauchamp House.

Ivy, the granddaughter of a duke and the eldest of seven daughters of a former Oxford don,
and Quill meet at an inn near Lady Celeste’s estate. Quill mistakes her for a governess—an attractive one despite her spectacles--and he defends her against discourtesies she is subject to at the inn. Ivy is impressed by his behavior. However, Quill’s consideration and Ivy’s admiration last only until he discovers her identity and accuses her of deceiving his aunt. Their ire does not prevent Quill from offering Ivy transportation to Beauchamp House nor Ivy from accepting his offer.

They find the other heirs already at the manor house along with Lady Serena Fanning, Quill’s cousin, who is there to chaperone the four younger women by Lady Celeste’s arrangement. Serena insists that Quill’s suspicions are unfounded, but he does not lose hope that he can rid his late aunt’s home of the women her terms “interlopers.”  However, thanks to a letter Lady Celeste left Ivy, Quill and Ivy are soon partners in finding her murderer. Thrown into one another’s company by their sleuthing, the marquess and the classics scholar move from enmity to intimacy. If they can outwit the murderer, they may discover a happiness neither ever expected.

I’m a Manda Collins fan and a fan of bluestocking heroines. Thus, it is hardly surprising that I loved this book. I found both Ivy and Quill appealing characters—intelligent, witty, and interesting. I was particularly pleased that Ivy, although independent and assertive, is also practical enough to see the advantages of sharing Lady Celeste’s letter with Quill from the beginning. Quill’s arrogance is tempered by his basic decency and his affection for his cousins. Watching Ivy upset his certainties was a delight.

Collins has a knack for balancing mystery and romance so that neither overshadows the other. She employs that skill to good effect in this book. Another winning characteristic of this author is the twist she gives the mystery that ensures the reader is caught by surprise even when the identity of the murderer is known. Ivy and Quill’s relationship has ample sizzle, but the pace allows time for them to know one another so that the reader understands that intimacy for them is more than a synonym for sex.

The secondary characters are vividly drawn and engaging. Lady Daphne almost steals the scenes of which she is a part. Since Ready Set Rogue is the first book in the Studies in Scandal series, readers can expect the stories of the other bluestockings to follow. I am especially eager for Daphne’s book. I hope we also get more of Lady Serena’s story. She and Jeremy, her six-year-old son, were among my favorite characters.

If you like historical romance that includes mystery in the mix, you should be reading Manda Collins. Her novels offer sensuality and sense (with the Austenian meaning) and characters who captivate. If you have enjoyed Collins’s earlier series, I think you will love this book. If Collins is a new author for you, Ready Set Rogue is a terrific introduction to her work. I highly recommend it.

~Janga
