Why Social Network?

Because it’s fun.  I know, as authors, we’re supposed to do these things to promote but I bet you, if that’s the only reason an author blogs, tweets, or puts up Facebook posts, you – the reader – will know immediately that their heart isn’t in it.  I’m a social media junkie!  You can find me on Twitter, FB, and my website is updated often.

What are my favorite topics?

Between 9 – 11 AM EST I’m usually writing – I #sprint with other writers, meaning we start at the same time, check in after an allotted amount of time and are accountable for how much we write.  My upcoming book, PERFECT FIT, the sequel to KARMA has been written this way.  I look forward to my writing time and the people I’ve come to count on who work along with me.  And we can all commiserate about how well – or how badly – our morning writing has gone.

Between 3-4 PM EST you can always find me talking about General Hospital.  If I’m home watching, I’m tweeting my comments and thoughts – and I follow many people who do the same.

All other times? I love reading almost as much as I love writing, so I’m happy to pick up threads of conversations about books.  I’ve met many readers, reviewers, and bloggers this way.  I’ve also had my world opened up to new books, authors and romance subgenres via recommendations of others. And I’m always out there talking about books and authors I’ve read and loved, so maybe if you follow me, you’ll find new-to-you books and authors too!

On Facebook, which is less immediate, I have discovered that posting funny graphics opens up great conversation.  So do pics of my two crazy dogs.

So you see, social media really is fun for me.  And if you happen to discover that I have a book out this month, that’s a bonus.  The real enjoyment is in the communication!

Readers, are you social media savvy?  Do you tweet?  Frequent Facebook?  What are some of your favorite social media topics or people to follow?  Leave a comment for a chance to win a copy of KARMA.

KARMA, fourth in Carly's contemporary series set in the small town of Serendipity was released May 1.
Police Officer Dare Barron has had a crush on Liza McKnight ever since he was a teenager. But despite his lifelong attraction, the closest he's ever come to interacting with her is watching Liza regularly bail out her brother at the station.

Dare's dark past with Liza's brother, Brian, has always kept him from pursuing her. But suddenly Liza finds herself in need of protection and Dare appoints himself as the man for the job.  And while the sizzling attraction between Dare and Liza draws them together, the past that  Dare and Brian share threatens to keep the two apart forever.

    1. I'm not a Kathy Griffin fan but I can imagine how funny Joel McHale must be. He co-hosted with Kelly Ripa on her morning talk show recently and was hilarious.

  5. Not on FB, don't tweet, and the only hand-held electronic device I own is a cell phone (with a camera/video I don't know how to operate, but I love texting with my kids).
Spend a LOT of time checking out author blogs (and web sites) almost every day of the week, and this helps me choose what books I want to buy. (I have read over 250 books/year since 1974.)
Am looking forward to reading Liza and Dare's sizzling story. Thank you for sharing.

I thought Pinterest would be a giant time suck too but I've been able to manage the time I spend there pretty well.

  11. I think the greatest thing about authors on any kind of social media is finding out when their next book is coming out...I love the build up a few weeks before the big event...and the books are never a disappointment..I read a least 2 books a week and finding great reads was a challenge.

  13. Yes, I am on facebook all the time so I guess you could say I am a Facebook junkie lol! I don't have a twitter account though. I love to follow my favorite authors, like you Carly :0), as well as my close friends and family. I enjoy learning about new sites like this one, and this is my first visit here. I read all the time when I am not working full time, being a mother to my 11 year old daughter, a housekeeper and a loving girlfriend to Kevin A. Kierstead who is also an author:) I am getting ready to start Destiny tonight and I can't wait:)

  15. Congratulations on the new release. I read author's blogs and follow them on Twitter, but I don't do Facebook. I don't like posting a lot of personal info and that seems to be mandatory on Facebook. As for Pinterest, I'm baffled. I know PJ wrote about it, but I'm surprised by its popularity.

  16. Other than visiting blogs I only do Twitter. 90% of the people I follow are authors, book bloggers or publishers. I get most of my book recs on Twitter. I like being able to virtually hang out with people that love books as much as I do.

  17. I Facebook ALL the time & follow many authors on there....I love it when they invite us into their lives & homes to give us a peek into their lives. A couple of fav authors I follow are Kristan Higgins & Jill Shalvis who often have what they call "Man Wars" to see which one can post a picture of the sexiest man and Jennifer Bernard (The Fireman Who Loved Me) has what she calls "Fireman Fridays" and let me tell ya it's HOT, HOT, HOT!! ;) Great blog and contest, thanks for chance to enter... 18. Hi, Carly, and welcome back! We're happy to have you with us today. Congrats on the new release!

I'm on Facebook, but limit what I put/say. I don't like to announce everything like some people tend to do. I figure people could care less when I use the bathroom or take a shower, etc. Lol. I'm not on Twitter or Pinterest because I try to limit my time spent away from my family. :)

  19. I have to confess that until I started blogging I didn't like or use social media sites. Then as a side effect of blogging I had to take it up and force myself to use it. I'm still not a fan of FB but I love Twitter and the instant chat that can develop between readers, authors unknown people around the same topic :-) It's an easy and casual way to connect with people and discuss things.

Congratulations on the release of Karma Carly! :-D

    Thank you,

  20. Thanks for a great interview and giveaway! I don't do social media, at all. I read my favorite book blogs and that's it! No Facebook or twitter (I wasn't even texting until about 2 years ago). I prefer as much in person as I can and watching the facebook and twitter blowups have further convinced me.

I've read such awesome reviews for Carly's books. This trilogy is on the top of my wishlist!

  23. PJ,
It wouldn't let me "reply" up above, but hopefully this works instead....
You said, "Wow! That's a whole lot of books, Laney! Do you keep a record of the ones you've read?"
Up until 2010, I just kept a tally of the numbers each year. I started keeping records of the individual romances a year ago because I wanted to "remember" the good things about a book so I could tell the author and anyone who would listen in the blogs and emails. I photocopy the covers of the book and write down my comments, then I keep those pages in alphabetical order by author in a binder so I can find them in an instant (as I pass my own books on to friends and family to read). Pretty sad, eh?
(I don't keep track of the numerous non-fiction books I read, as I just get them from the library and don't blog about them.)

  27. I am more of a facebook person than twitter. I also love blogs, reading them not writing them. I have tried to get into pinterest, but just not falling in love with it yet. I follow many authors on facebook and twitter both.

  28. I tweet, but not much. It is just too hard to keep up with. I follow my Facebook page as much as I can. Aside from a few s contest sites, i primarily follow reviewers and authors. I started when I was working at a library so I could keep abreast of what was going on in the romance writing world. I enjoyed it and kept it up and expanded those I follow. There are also updates from friends. I find I follow blogs for the detailed information on authors, books, and my favorite - RESEARCH.
I hope KARMA is doing well. Best of luck with the rest of your Serendipity books.

  30. I do not Tweet, but I have been on FB for about 21/2 years. I started when Eloisa James was on sabbatal anposting from Paris. I got to know a lot of my favorite authors this way as well. I have even had the chance to meet some of them and had the pleasure of being asked to read some of their books as ARC's before they were available to the public. Then I ame able to write reviews on the books before or as soon as they become available!

Always excited to follow blogs that has comfortable and great layout, or one that has lots of review of books I love, or, of course, one that has lots of international giveaways. :D. Although, most of the time I forgot checking on them regularly.
