Halloween Giveaway - - Boo at the Zoo

 Happy Halloween!

It's the day of ghosts and goblins, little kids and candy, pumpkins, games, and animals at the zoo! I'm fortunate to have a wonderful local zoo only a few miles from me. It's on the small side, with great natural habitats, a terrific staff, loads of active volunteers, and a dedicated rescue and rehab program (they just released two rehabbed turtles back into the ocean last week). They've spent the past two weeks anticipating Halloween with their fun Boo at the Zoo celebration. Since it's become my favorite place for morning walks since moving here, I've been happily immersed in all the festivities of the pumpkin and ghostie season. As have the animals! Here are a few of my favorite photos I've taken over the past two weeks.

My kangaroo buddy took time out from playing with his ball to pose for a photo. I'm thinking he may have a modeling career on the horizon.

Just hanging out until dark. Siamang Ape, Sapphire says that's when the real fun begins!

Did someone say candy? This meercat is all in for Halloween!

This friendly macaw wins best natural costume. His colors are even more vibrant in person!

Looks like someone got lost during last year's festivities. At least he had a bottle of rum to keep him company!

Masaya, the jaguar enjoying a pre-Halloween treat.

This little lorikeet thought my glasses were the treat!

The lorikeet above stayed with me the entire time I was in the aviary but here's one of her buddies so you can see them in all their colorful glory.

And, finally, here are the humans in some of our finery from Halloweens past. I do enjoy this holiday...as if you couldn't tell!

Do you celebrate Halloween? Do you still dress in costume? If so, what will you be this year?

Do you have a local zoo? Do you ever visit?

What's your favorite Halloween candy?

Four of you who post a comment by 11:00 PM, November 2 will each receive a package of books from my stash. Treats only - No tricks!

  1. I give out candy and am usually wearing a witch costume! Our Pittsburgh Zoo is great and I try to get there once a year. Mallow cups are my favorite because I can't usually find them except during Halloween season. Loved all your pics!

    1. I love the Jax Zoo! Field trips are very popular here too. Four school buses were unloading as I was leaving the zoo the other morning. Good timing! :)

  4. I haven't dressed up in a few years, the last time I did I went as a bunch of grapes with some friends. We do have a local zoo and I usually bring my nieces there for the Zoo Boo. Favorite candy is Nerds, twix, and peanut butter cups.

  6. I got candy to hand out - we'll see if anyone comes by. It's been a long time since I've been to a zoo in person - closest is FB videos of animals filmed in the wild.

    1. I'm in a new neighborhood and from what I hear the trick or treaters will be plentiful. After nine years in a condo, I'm so excited to have littles in costume again!

  8. When we lived in Military Housing - I found out what it was to have trick or treaters. Everyone simply sat out front and handed out the candy. I have never seen so many kids. My children went to an elementary school on the base. It was some of the most fun ever for Halloween for me. I enjoy the wee ones when they come in their terrific costumes and their wonderful expressions. I do not live in a place where trick or treaters come. It breaks my heart. It used to be a busy place, but alas, no more. I love Almond Joy and Reeses' Peanut Butter Cups.
I do not now live near a zoo, but when I was pregnant with my eldest daughter, the zoo was just across the freeway. I would walk through there every day...it was great exercise. And I loved visiting with the animals. When I worked for FEMA, I tried to go visit any zoo which was near enough.
I am still wondering how they build zoos where everything is up hill. No matter where you go, the next place is always uphill and when you are all done, the exit is uphill.
Thanks for the wonderful pictures. You are blessed to see such a wonderful place on a regular basis.
Happy Halloween to everyone, enjoy the day.

  9. I don't celebrate Halloween, just give out candy to the few kids who come around. My bday is 2 days before. We have the Bronx Zoo, about 1 1/2 hrs away; have not been there in years. We also have a petting zoo in the other direction. I love chocolate, esp. plain hershey bars and Nestle's Crunch. Patoct

  10. Hi! I don't usually dress up for Halloween. I loved making costumes for my kids. Some are captured on photos. I really dig those out. LOVE seeing what the neighbor's kids are dressed as.

I am not a big zoo person which is a shame since The Bronx Zoo is about an hour away.

No need to enter me in the giveaway! Happy Halloween!

  11. I don't dress up for Halloween. I do look forward to seeing what my grandson wears. I used to have lots of candy and snacks to hand out, but the number of kids have trickled down. None appeared last year. I'm keeping my lights off tonight. I do have treats for my grandson. It's been awhile since I've been to our local zoo. We took our grandson a few years ago. We need to go again soon. I love chocolates. Sometimes, I ask my grandson if I can have a snickers. LOL

  13. I haven't dressed up for Halloween for several years, but did when I took the kids out. I'm a big fan of everything chocolate, so I buy lots of chocolate to distribute to the kids when they come by (on the years they do a hayride trick or treat in our neighborhood). We do not have a local zoo. The closest one is over an hour away in San Antonio.

  14. Happy Halloween! I enjoy celebrating Halloween and dressing up, but I mostly like to throw together something with clothes I own and can reuse. This year I’m keeping it simple and going as Wednesday Addams.
I do have a local zoo and I go once every year, approximately. I haven’t been so far this year, though!
    My favorite candy is butterfingers

  15. No we don't celebrate Halloween! Our closest zoo is 100 miles away, but we try to go as often as we can! Hershey's mini's are my favorite.

  17. Lately, I've been copping out and just wearing a Hocus Pocus sweatshirt for Trick or Treat. I'm so busy making sure my kids have the costumes they want and planning parties and activities so that everyone is having fun that I'm to tired to worry about myself. And I am definitely sneaking Snickers bars out of my kids candy baskets :-)

  18. We've been pretty low key about Halloween, but I'm always a fan of cute/creative costumes and of course, candy, LOL! My favorites are Twix and gummy candy. As for zoos, we are fortunate to have a couple good ones nearby, but haven't visited recently... might be time to take a peek!

  19. This year I babysat our 14 month old grandson so his parents could attend a Halloween party.

We go to the Vilas Park Zoo in Madison, WI every summer with my 4 grandchildren. We make a day of it with a picnic in the park, a stop at the playground and a stop at a local dairy for ice cream!

Favorite Halloween candy Hershey bars. I also like Milky Ways, Twix and M&M’s.
