Celebrating our 7th Anniversary

On November 2, 2009, the Romance Dish opened its doors and here we are, seven years later, still sharing our love of romance and having fun doing it. Some of you have been with us from the beginning while, for others, we're a recent discovery. I hope you enjoy the time you spend here and want you to know all of you are appreciated!

Year #7 at the Romance Dish was filled with new adventures, new discoveries, and plenty of fun. Here are a few of my personal highlights...

Sweetest Scoundrel by Elizabeth Hoyt was our first Top Dish review of Year #7 and is one of my favorite books in Hoyt's Maiden Lane series. The book went on to be a finalist for the 2015 RITA® in the Historical Romance:Short category.

Debut author Marnee Blake joined us in December for a Q&A about her debut New Adult/Sci-Fi Romantic Thriller, Altered. This book blew me away and I was so excited when it was announced as a finalist for the 2015 RITA® in the Best First Book category. Altered is currently on sale for $3.99 in ebook format.

One of my favorite posts from Janga during Year #7 was her two-part feature on the Enchanting Stand-Alone Novels of Eloisa James. As Janga notes in Part One of her feature, one definition of "enchanting" is "to delight to a high degree." That definition applies not only to James' novels but to Janga's posts here at the Dish as well. I'm so very delighted and thankful that she is part of the Romance Dish team!

There's always a bit of trepidation when I turn the first page of a book that I've waited years (five to be exact) to read. Such was the case in February when Roxanne St. Claire finally published Barefoot With a Bad Boy, the long-awaited and highly-anticipated story of Gabriel Rossi (a secondary character in St. Claire's Guardian Angelinos series). This is one of those stories that reaches into your soul and doesn't let go. The suspense is riveting, the descriptions, vivid, and while the story is deeply emotional there is also a fair amount of humor sprinkled throughout. I may have gushed a bit in my 5-star review but this bad boy deserved it.

March brought a new book from a new-to-me author with The Saints of the Lost and Found by T.M. Causey. This southern gothic suspense thriller grabbed me from the start and absolutely refused to let go. I was excited to have the opportunity to question the author about this haunting story that I'm still thinking about months later.

April brought another new-to-me author to the Dish with my Q&A with Laura Florand and her contemporary romance, Chase Me. I adored everything about this book. As I told Ms. Florand in our Q&A, finishing Chase Me left me with a "huge smile, teary eyes, and a happy heart." Can't ask for much more than that!

I love celebrating debut authors, especially when I've followed their journey to publication, which is why I was excited to host Lenora Bell when her sparkling debut, How the Duke Was Won was published in April. I thoroughly enjoyed both Bell's debut as well as her August release, If I Only Had a Duke and am looking forward to more from this talented new author.

In May, popular historical romance author Julie Anne Long made the transition to contemporary romance with the release of Hot in Hellcat Canyon. Those of us who adored her historicals had been holding our breath in the hope that we would not be disappointed by her present-day writing voice. As you can tell from Janga's Top Dish review, Long didn't miss a beat. As Janga says in her review, Hot in Hellcat Canyon is "smart, sexy, and heart-melting." It immediately secured a spot on both of our Best of 2016 book lists. Note: In a triumphant farewell to her beloved Pennyroyal Green historical romance series, Long's It Started With a Scandal won the 2015 RITA® in the Historical Romance:Short category.

Another new-to-me author, Susannah Sandlin took us to the Louisiana bayou with the thrilling first book in her new Wilds of the Bayou romantic suspense series, Wild Man's Curse. I wanted to read it slowly, savoring each word; absorbing the steamy, mystical, sometimes sensual, sometimes sinister life on the bayou while at the same time, racing through the pages to discover what awaited around the next turn. This is one of those books that kept me reading way past my bedtime!

Laura Trentham took us to the Deep South with her heartwarming Cottonbloom contemporary romance series. The second book, Then He Kissed Me, captured my heart and secured a spot on my Best of 2016 watch list. I've fallen in love with this quirky southern town and am so excited by the announcement that more Cottonbloom books will be coming our way.

Katie Ruggle, a new and exciting voice in romantic suspense, grabbed a place on my auto-buy list with her debut Rocky Mountain Search and Rescue quartet. Action-packed, deeply emotional, and with a continuing mystery that had me eagerly anticipating each new book, this series was a highlight of my summer/fall reading. Read more about Katie and the series in our August Q&A

Vanessa Kelly's August book, My Fair Princess introduced readers to one of my all-time favorite heroines, Gillian Dryden and the always enjoyable fish-out-of-water trope. The illegitimate daughter of an English prince, Gillian grew up in Italy, has a finely honed sense of justice, isn't hesitant to speak her mind, and is armed at all times, even in the middle of a London ballroom. Her oh-so-proper hero, tasked with transforming her into an acceptable English society miss, has no idea what he's in for! Kelly talked about the musical inspiration for this story in her guest postMy Fair Princess is currently on sale at only $0.99 in ebook format.

Another WOW reading highlight for me came with the release of Because I'm Watching by Christina Dodd. This Top Dish suspense thriller is filled with fascinating, complex characters who absolutely refused to let me walk away until I had read every word of their compelling story. Filled with compassion, intrigue, anguish, mystery, hope, murder, forgiveness, redemption, twists and turns aplenty, and a love that heals two broken souls, Because I'm Watching is, in my opinion, one of the best books Dodd has ever written.

September brought my favorite historical romance of the year: Do You Want to Start a Scandal by Tessa Dare. I've been reading Dare since her debut and print copies of all of her books grace my keeper shelves but this story, that marries her Spindle Cove and Castles Ever After series, is special. I grinned from the first page to the final one - all three times I've read it - and, still, all it takes is someone mentioning Charlotte and Piers and all I want to do is curl up on the couch and lose myself in their world once again. Is it any wonder  Do You Want to Start a Scandal earned my Top Dish rating?

Of course, a big highlight for me this year was attending the inaugural Historical Romance Retreat in Spokane, Washington and hanging out with the fabulous Anna Campbell. It was such a special treat. We hadn't seen each other in six years! You can read about the trip and browse some of my photos here

  2. This year has been so busy, it is hard to think of highlights. My husband retired for the second time in March. That was followed by partial knee surgery a few weeks later. We had planned to travel, but it looks like this year will be the year of repair and refurbish for both of us. We went to Florida in the early summer for the funeral of a dear family friend who was in his 90's. Was a good visit with friends and family. We made a quick trip to Washington, DC in September. An 8 hour drive up on Sunday, a funeral for another friend atArlington National Cemetery on Monday, and an 8 hour drive home on Tuesday. In September we also bought a used RV in preparation for the trip my husband wants to take to Alaska next year. We did 2 nights at the local camp ground to figure it out then had to take it in for $600 worth of repairs. We just spent 2 weeks in Northern New York, VT, New Hampshire, Maine, and Connecticut visiting friends and family. The RV worked out pretty well for our maiden voyage. I still haven't decided if it was a good idea or an expensive mistake.
I haven't been able to do as much reading as I would really like to do. Right now I am terribly behind on everything. I am cutting out some commitments so we can catch up and have more time for ourselves. I really appreciate the Dish reviews. Our tastes are similar , so it is easy to find books I know I will enjoy. Best wishes for another successful 7 years.

  3. Congratulations on seven wonderful years! Where does the time go?
Alas, I have "only" been visiting here since January of 2010. I'm just a newbie, LOL!
My highlights have been dishing with the Dishes. Nothing in particular. Just hangin' out with my besties.
I am SO looking forward to what the future holds for the Dishes. Here's to many more years and much to celebrate!

  5. Seven years is a real milestone. I have enjoyed following you for some time now and look forward to many more years.

For me, life is good every day. We took a cruise at Easter with our whole family: two sons and their children for a total of 10 people. It was wonderful and the three Michael Fischer members of the family (Sr., Jr., and III) had fun confusing the cruise people onboard the ship. :-)

There are so many authors that I totally adore and I read constantly to keep up with all of their books. To name any particular one would not be fair. They are all terrific.

  6. Yay!! Congratulations to the Romance Dish for SEVEN years of glorious posts that have celebrated books we loved and introduced us to new authors who made themselves our autobuys!

Highlights of the year? Besides having the Cubs win the World Series and the real possibility of the first woman president of the United States? Well, I have to agree, Tessa Dare's Scandal book was DEFINITELY on that list. Monica McCarty finished up her Highland Guard series and it finished just as strong as it began. Julie Anne Long became my go-to CONTEMPORARY author this summer with her HOT IN HELLCAT CANYON. And well, I can't really think of a book from my autobuy authors this year that I didn't love completely and thought it was one of their best.

Wasn't McCarty's Highland Guard series wonderful? I adore her writing. Can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

  7. The highlight of my year was having my young brother, his wife, and three small sons visit. I hadn't seen them since the last time I was home in England over two years ago. We had such a lovely visit, the kids loved swimming in the pool, going to the beach, and the biggie for them was visiting Disney World. I was sad when they left. Now, I'm looking forward to seeing them all again when I go home next June for a month.

I've read so many wonderful books this year, and have more than one favorite Author.

Congratulations on your seven year Anniversary.

  8. Awh, thanks for including me in the highlights! I loved coming to the Dish and hope that I can visit again very soon! Highlights over the past year? Definitely going to San Diego for the RWA National Conference. I've never been to the West Coast, so this was an amazing experience for me. And, I got to be a RITA finalist there, too!

New author that rocked my world? Sarina Bowen. I've been a slow reader this year, but her True North series was wonderful!!

Looking forward to many more wonderful years, and Happy Anniversary to you all!

  9. Seven years? Wow! It doesn't seem that long, PJ. Congratulations to you. And thanks for inviting me to be part of the TRD team.

I share many of your reading highlights, and I loved writing that EJ post. I'm with Hellie. It had been a great romance reading year. So many wonderful books--and the year is not over yet.

The brightest highlight of my year was the birth of Grand #14, Emma Grace. I'm sure her first Christmas will be another highlight.

I have the Cottonbloom series (I love small town contemporaries) and Katie Ruggle's series on my TBR. I've discovered 4 new-to-me authors this year and they are really something special: Catherine Bybee, Lauren Layne, Kristen Painter and Erin Nicholas.

  13. Happy Anniversary! I have been here since the beginning, and this spot remains a favorite place for me to hang out and talk about books and authors with like-minded readers. I am so happy that you have kept the blog going even though it involves so much work on your part. Thanks, also, to Anna and Janga for their contributions.

This has been an up-and-down year for me, but a highlight was a family trip to Paris and London. Lots of good memories made!

I continue to enjoy reading. A new author I have discovered is Lauren Layne.

Cheryl, I'm really proud that I was a part of this blog for so many years! I've been talking to PJ about doing a few spot reviews when I pick up something that really rocks my world, so you never know, I might be BAAAAACCCCCCKKKK (she said in the Poltergeist voice).

  20. Congratulations on running one of the very best romance reader blogs. I'm so glad y'all are here!

In my reading highlights for the year, I found two books by new-to-me authors that were excellent: Sally Thorne's The Hating Game and Lindsay Faye's Jane Steele. I'll definitely be checking for more of their novels. Several of the books you spotlighted--The Saints of the Lost and Found, Hot in Hellcat Canyon, Do You Want to Start a Scandal--will make it to my best of 2016 list. And I just bought the Susannah Sandlin book, so we'll see! I've discovered that 82% of the books I'm reading are digital. And, I'm reading more mystery/thriller and romantic suspense books than in the past, though historical and contemporary romance still account for most of my book choices.

  21. Congrats to PJ and her worthy band of reviewers on seven years of fascinating book news ... long may it continue!

Scanning through the comments, I'm a little disapointed that after seven years I seem to be the only obvious male attracted to this delicious honey pot ... Any ideas on how to attract more?

For new authors I discovered two 'time slip' specialists this year, both living in England not too far from me: Pam Hartshorne and Christina Courtenay. Would be great if interviews could be arranged for the blog!

Special trips this year included a visit to Avebury with the awesome neolithic standing stones, nearby White Horses and Tudor Manor. Its not far from Stonehenge so the two could make a nice pre-historic day out.

Highlights have included excellent weather for trips to the English coast and the historic decision for the UK to leave the European Union. The union started as a trading bloc but has now become dominated by politics and the creation of a supranational state.I think many in the UK want to keep national democracy and establish wider trading links with the rest of the world

    1. Quantum, can I recommend two more wonderful time slip books? Nicola Cornick's House of Shadows and Christine Wells's The Wife's Tale. And another one I haven't yet read but everybody raves about is Letters to the Lost by Iona Grey. It's a genre I really enjoy.

      Delete
    2. Hi Anna. Thanks for those recommendations. Nicola is already on my radar but Iona Grey and Christine Wells are new to me ... and both available in audio. :)
I'm really enjoying the time slip concept. Always been fascinated by time in physics but time travel fiction often feels too far fetched to me. This genre, exploiting memories and sometimes ghosts from the past, has a plausibility for me that makes the novels compelling.

Can we look forward to an Anna Campbell time slip in due course? my visit to Avebury made me think that prehistoric memories slipping into the present could be fascinating!

      Delete
    3. Quantum, you never say never. I love the way you can play compare and contrast with these stories in a way that's palatable to a modern audience. I'm really looking forward to reading Iona's book - it got book of the year at the Romance Novelists Association awards this year in London. She used to write category romance as India Grey and those are classics. One of my fave time slips is Susanna Kearsley's The Shadowy Horses. Have you read it? I've been recommending it up and down the world since I read it early this year.

I've discovered some of my favorite writers here and often people I wouldn't have found out about anywhere else. It's wonderful when you find a blog that shares your reading tastes! I'm also so proud that for quite a few years, I was a regular columnist talking about older romances people might have missed in all the hullabaloo of the flood of wonderful new releases. That was such fun. I'm sorry time pressure made it impossible to continue - but I've been talking to PJ about doing an occasional spot about a book that rocks my world. So I might be back!

Highlights of my year? Well, I'm just back from nearly 2 months in the States and Canada and I had the most marvelous time. I got to spend a couple of days with one of my fave peeps, the fabulous PJ, in Spokane. And if any of you are historical romance enthusiasts, check out the Historical Romance Retreat. I think it's the best reader event I've ever been to! So much fun. http://www.historicalromanceretreat.com/

So from far south in Australia, I raise a glass in the Romance Dish's direction and say happy birthday and here's to many more! xxx

  43. Wow, has it been 7 years?! Happy 7th Anniversary!

No trips for me and as long as my family is healthy (no more ER visits, please), it's all good.

  44. PJ, Happy Birthday/Anniversary! May there be many more.

I took a research trip to the UK this year. That and our son's graduation from college were the highlights for me. One author I discovered is Rebecca Zanetti. I love her post-apocalyptic Scorpion Syndrome series.

  49. What a pleasure it is to see you still going strong after all these years, PJ and the Dishies! You've always supported romance writers in a genuine and generous way and I've loved getting to know you over the years, and finding you to be as lovely in person as you are online. Long live the blog and all who sail in her!
