A cruel twist of fate…

Nicholas St. Clare, youngest son of the Marquess of Averstow, was an avid horseman until his legs were crushed on the battlefield. The injury sent him home to England a broken man. Ashamed of his injury, he’s become a virtual recluse on his country estate until his mother, the dowager marchioness, insists he marry. Nicholas doesn’t want a bride who would be shackled to his broken body and privately despise him for being a cripple. He hates his weakness and doesn’t believe anyone can see past it.

A stroke of good luck…
Amelia Blackstock has always followed her family motto: A Blackstock doesn’t run from trouble. It runs from us. Unfortunately, trouble caught up with her, and when the world finds out, she’ll be ruined. When Lord Nicholas stumbles upon her sobbing, he tries to comfort her. His kindness backfires when they are discovered alone together, and Amelia faces even more scandal. Nicholas offers to marry her, but only if she’ll agree to a separate bed chambers.

A happily ever after in jeopardy.
Amelia concedes to a platonic marriage, but as her feelings for Lord Nicholas grow, she wants more. Nicholas is drawn to Amelia as well, but he fears risking it all by revealing the ugly truth of his injury. When Nicholas’s brothers-in-arms arrive for a house party, it seems everything that can go wrong, does. Between a lost pet pig, a fugitive wanted for treason, and a night of drinking gone awry, Nicholas and Amelia grow further apart. Nicholas is the last of the Survivors. Will he be the only one without a happily ever after?

PJ's Thoughts:

Shana Galen's The Survivors has been one of my all-time favorite historical romance series. These men, chosen for their skills, but also for their expendability, were never expected to return home from the battlefield. But, against all odds, twelve of them did. One by one, they have learned to live with their scars from those experiences, both those that are visible and the ones held deep inside. One by one, they have each found deep, enduring love with women who challenge them, support them, love them, until only one survivor remains...isolated, broken, alone.

Amelia and Nicholas ended up being one of my favorite couples of the series. Nicholas was so vulnerable, so fearful of being rejected because of his injuries. My heart ached for him. He's a good man, a caring man, but that didn't stop me from wanting to toss a bucket of cold water over him a time or two. So clueless. I adored Amelia from the moment Nicholas discovered her sobbing in his stable, her guard pig at her side. She was so refreshingly candid and pragmatic, but also with vulnerabilities of her own. I loved how she challenged Nicholas, how when she looked at him she saw a desirable man, not a broken one. I especially admired how she faced her fear in telling him how she felt and what she wanted. Nicholas wasn't the only one who evolved in this story.

The cherry on top of this delicious romance sundae was the reunion of the Survivors and their families and for fans of the series, a delightful surprise. The bonds forged in war among these men made them brothers and bringing them back together was a wonderful way to close out this series but this was more than just a gratuitous "photo op." Galen wove them into the story in a way that celebrated their reunion (so much fun and laughter) while also aiding Nicholas in his character's growth (no one can knock sense into a man like another man you've gone to hell and back with) and progressing his relationship with Amelia.

Rather than sadness, when I turned the final page of I Want You to Want Me, I did so with hope, with joy, and with appreciation for these wonderful characters who will continue to live on in my heart. Well done, Ms. Galen. I can't wait to find out what you have in store for readers next.

She’s poor as a church mouse.

When young Jenny Tate stumbles over the beaten body of a boy in the streets of the London slums, her only intention is to rifle through his pockets. But the bruised lad charms her into helping him, and the next thing she knows, Aidan Sterling and she are fast friends, navigating life on the streets with all its dangers together. Jenny has learned never to trust or love anyone, but as the two grow up, they learn to rely on one other. And then Aidan betrays her in the worst way possible.

He’s rich as a king.

Aidan Sterling is one of the richest men in England. He has everything he wants and no one to share it with. After risking his life in the army, he returned to England and made a fortune. Now he keeps his loneliness at bay by focusing on what he’s good at—making money. And then Jenny Tate steps unexpectedly back into his life. He’s never forgotten her and never stopped loving her. Jenny hasn’t forgotten him either, and she hasn’t forgiven him. She’s betrothed to a viscount and has a new life and wants nothing to do with Aidan. But the discovery of an ancient trunk, a hunt for a street urchin, and the interference of homing pigeons might just be enough to bring these two back together.

PJ's Thoughts:

Shana Galen knocks it out of the park again with the latest installment in her The Survivors series. This second-chance, friends-to-lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers story reeled me right in and kept me flipping pages. I loved how Galen gave us insights into Jenny and Aidan as children and teens then separated them for ten years before bringing them back together as adults with life experience. It was instrumental in really understanding these characters, their experiences, their dreams, and their fears. There are unresolved feelings to be faced and amends to be made before they can move forward. But there are also moral dilemmas, divided loyalties, internal fears, and individual priorities that must be addressed before a happily ever after is even a possibility. Galen seamlessly weaves all of the threads together to create an emotional story for two people who were fated to be together, even if one of them is fighting it all the way.

I loved how Jenny remained her true, authentic self throughout the story, growing emotionally, gaining skills, and learning to move within the ton, without changing who she has always been at her core. I'm glad Aidan remained true to his promise to her when they were young, even if she was unaware. It told me that even though he's grown into an adult who is obsessed with making money, he remains at his core, a boy who cared deeply about the girl he left behind and a man who is willing to be better for the woman he loves.

A theme that runs through this series is chosen family and it's one of my most favorite aspects of the series. The members of Draven's unit who survived the war have created a family unit, by choice. A band of brothers that has expanded to include the wives and children who have been added along the way. And in this book, another smaller family is created. Fans of the series will be delighted to discover the happy outcome for street urchin, Harley while readers who start with this book will most likely be charmed by this heart-stealing little girl the same way I was. And then there's Jenny's mentor, the man who rescued her from the streets ten years ago, the man most likely to stand between Jenny and Aidan, but who, at great peril to himself and to the person he loves, took a different path. I adored him.

Readers should not be put off by the fact that this book is near the end of a long-running series. While a few characters from earlier books make appearances, From Rags to Kisses stands very well on its own.

He’s a pain…literally.

Rowden Payne, known as The Royal Payne, makes his living in the high stakes world of bareknuckle boxing. The disavowed son of a duke likes the focus boxing requires. It keeps his mind off the tragedies in his past. But just as he’s poised to knock out his biggest rival, he’s mesmerized by a pair of exotic hazel eyes in the crowd. He finds himself flat on his back and short fifty pounds.

She’s a prude with a problem.
Modesty Brown’s father has vanished. The strict minister has never disappeared before, and Modesty is left having to rely on elders of the church for help. But when she becomes a burden to them, she has to seek out her aunt, a woman of high rank. Modesty’s only way of finding her is by asking the only man she knows of that class—Rowden Payne. Unfortunately, she’s the one responsible for the Royal Payne losing his crucial fight.

Sometimes the hardest hit is the one to the heart.
Rowden doesn’t want to care for anyone or anything, but if he can just help Modesty find her father, he can be rid of her. Soon the revelation of her father’s secrets and lies puts Modesty, Rowden, and their friends in danger, and if Rowden can’t admit his feelings for Modesty, he’ll lose her forever.

PJ's Thoughts:

I should begin by saying that, yes, this is the 10th book in Shana Galen's The Survivors series but, no, you don't have to have read the earlier books to thoroughly enjoy this one. The 9th book, Sweet Rogue of Mine (read PJ's review) is the only other book in which Payne has a (secondary) role. However, The Survivors is one of my all-time favorite historical romance series and I do highly recommend all of the books.

After meeting Rowden Payne in Nash's book, I was curious about what type of heroine Galen would create for him. I have to admit, I never guessed it would be the prudish daughter of a puritanical, fire and brimstone preacher! But, as unlikely as that pairing may seem, these two are so good together, each being exactly what the other needs to fill their hearts with happiness. I loved Modesty's evolution as she throws off the yoke of perfection she's spent her life carrying and begins to discover who she is and what she wants. I adored Rowden, ached for his anguish over what he'd lost, and cheered for what he found with Modesty. I loved the caring between them, the humor, and the passion.

Leading a wonderful secondary cast of characters are Rowden's boxing manager, Chibale Okoro and London's most sought after dressmaker, Madame Renauld. Their romance was sweet, passionate, and definitely sigh-worthy. I loved seeing this successful Black couple prominently placed in the book.

Other secondary characters evoked a plethora of emotions, enriching the overall story. Highlights for me included Rowden's manservant, Trogdon (I could so vividly envision this character!), and former hero and heroine, Ewan Mostyn (still a man of few words) and Lady Lorraine (still a force to be reckoned with).

Shana Galen once again has created a world of passion, danger, brotherhood, and love that reeled me in and kept me engaged from beginning to end. Ten books in and I'm still eager for more.

A sharpshooter who’s lost his sight…

When a stray pistol ball from the battlefield took Nash’s sight, it also took his entire identity. He’s retreated to his father’s county home to lick his wounds, but his drinking and isolation have only made things worse. When Nash’s father, a powerful earl, threatens to send Nash to an asylum, his former brothers-in-arms call in one of their own to set Nash back on the right course. Nash fears he’s fallen too far and perhaps ending it all is the best solution. Until he encounters a woman in the garden signing a bawdy tune at the top of her lungs.

An outcast who sees too much…

Prudence Howard has traveled the world with her missionary parents. But after the scandal she caused in Cairo, they’ve foisted her on a vicar in the small town of Milcroft and sailed to the Far East to evangelize without her. Pru doesn’t mean to cause trouble; it’s just that being good is so very hard. When she meets Nash Pope, she’s instantly intrigued. He might be hot-tempered, but he’s handsome and unusual and arouses her interest and passion like no one she’s ever met. He might not know he needs or even wants her help, but Pru has a plan to save him.

Together they glimpse a brighter future.

Nash is bewildered by the unconventional woman who keeps turning up on his doorstep. She tries to teach him night writing, claims a feral peacock is a momentous sign, and makes his toes curl when she kisses him. She refuses to give up on him. But though Nash finds it easy to believe in Pru, can he ever trust himself again?

PJ's Thoughts:

Not only is Sweet Rogue of Mine my favorite book of this series, I also think it's one of the best books Shana Galen has written. Galen does not shy away from the deeply emotional trauma of Nash's depression and PTSD from his years in the war, the resulting injuries, and the haunting memories of what happened on the battlefields. His destructive behavior and thoughts of worthlessness are on full display when he's at his lowest. But then a ray of sunshine, singing bawdy songs, unexpectedly drops into his life and slowly, reluctantly, hopefully, Nash's life begins to change. I was intrigued by Nash when he first appeared on the pages of The Highlander's Excellent Adventure (book 8) and was hopeful that Galen would explore his story in a book of his own. I'm so glad she did. I ached for what he had been through and his continuing struggles, especially those connected with his father. I liked that Galen didn't minimize the challenges facing him, didn't offer easy fixes, and that she surrounded him with individuals who had his best interests at heart, like his friend and fellow survivor, Rowden Payne (hoping we'll see more of him in a future book). Then there's Nash's slowly deepening relationship with Pru. It was everything I could have wanted. It's been a while since I've been as deeply invested in a character as I was with Nash.

It could only have been Pru. Oh, how I adored this character. She brought the light to Nash's darkness, the hope to his despair. I loved everything about her, from her bawdy songs to her "oddness" to her staunch advocacy for what Nash needed and deserved in life. I also appreciated that Galen gave her depth and layers. She had an intriguing storyline of her own. I especially enjoyed her relationship with a local dowager and the strength and confidence she gained from it. It was so enjoyable watching her come into her own, using that confidence not only to help Nash but to fight for the happiness for which her heart yearned. Every time she came to Nash's defense, every idea she brought to fruition to help him find his best life and re-open his heart made me love her even more.

One of the aspects of this story that I most enjoyed was how Nash and Pru each saw themselves as opposed to how each viewed the other. Though Nash was the handsome and dashing son of an earl, his injury had changed his perception of himself to lesser than, whereas Pru had a pragmatically clear view of herself. As the daughter of a missionary, she had no social standing, and a glimpse into a mirror was all that was needed to confirm the opinion of many that she possessed no outer beauty in either body or face. None of those facts were discarded by Galen. Instead, she crafted a story wherein the characters were forced to look deeper, past outer facades, in Nash's case one he was unable to see, for inner strength and beauty not always noticeable at first glance. It's a critical part of the journey they must travel to discover not only the beauty and strength of the other but, more importantly, that residing within themselves.

If you enjoy character-driven, historical romance with deep emotion, well-placed humor, sensual chemistry, interesting historical details, and a hero and heroine who will capture your heart, look no further than Shana Galen's Sweet Rogue of Mine. It is the first book this year to land on my Best of 2021 watch list.

Although this book can be read as a standalone, for a more complete understanding of Nash, and the challenges he faces, I encourage you to first read book eight, The Highlander's Excellent Adventure

Just because they’ve run away…

Ines Neves and Emmeline Wellesley have both run away. Ines hid in a carriage from a tedious suitor, only to find, too late, the carriage had traveled out of London, not just around the block. To make matters worse, the carriage is that of a stranger: a handsome Highlander. Or perhaps a big, strapping Highlander makes matters better? Emmeline Wellesley has had four Seasons and cannot tolerate another. To force her mother to listen to her, she’s run away. But things haven’t gone well. She’s been locked in a closet, had all her money stolen, and somehow adopted a dog. When an old family friend shows up to save her, she doesn’t exactly welcome his help.

Doesn’t mean they don’t want to be found.
Duncan Murray doesn’t know what to make of the Portuguese-speaking woman in his carriage. She refuses to return to London, so he takes her to meet Nash Pope, a so-called friend who speaks Portuguese. On the way, he meets up with former soldier Stratford Fortescue, and Stratford’s opinionated distant cousin, Miss Wellesley. The four travel together to Nash’s estate, and that’s when everything goes really wrong. On the run to Scotland, Duncan finds himself increasingly attracted to Ines, even though he knows he can never marry her. Stratford has always wanted Emmeline, but his family secret means he doesn’t deserve her. This excellent adventure might bring the couples together, but only if they manage to elude gun shots, a murderous brother-in-law, a vicious dog, and outlaws.

PJ's Thoughts:

This book is so much fun. I pretty much smiled through the entire thing. I'll even go so far as to say it's probably my favorite of the entire series, which is saying a lot considering how much I love this series. Galen gives us a fast-paced, road romance with not one but two couples on unexpected journeys to happily ever after and it just made me so darn happy.

The main characters are very likable and I found myself easily rooting for all of them. Telling the story from each of their alternating points of view adds extra depth to the journey as well as the characters themselves and their relationships. I love a good road romance and this book had all the highs and lows to keep me engaged throughout. I was never sure what was going to happen next! I cheered Ines and Emmeline on during their bid for the freedom to make their own choices, laughed at how they ran circles around two battle-tested former soldiers (actually three, counting Nash, a drunken, half-blind former sharpshooter I hope we'll be seeing again), and sighed with delight as hearts entwined. I also fell head over heels for a huge, scary-looking dog who turns out to be a big ole cuddlebug, but handy to have around when his humans are threatened.

There's conflict, and a bit of angst, but mostly this is a fun romp from London into the Scottish Highlands, filled with humor, danger, passion, excitement, and swoon-worthy happy endings...following some well-deserved hero groveling. I highly recommend it.

While this is the 8th book in the Survivors series, it stands well on its own. However, if you would like a bit more background on Ines I recommend also reading her sister's journey to love with Benedict Draven in book 5, The Claiming of the Shrew. Actually, I recommend the whole series but you really will be okay starting with The Highlander's Excellent Adventure

Lieutenant Colonel Benedict Draven has retired from the army and spends most of his days either consulting for the Foreign Office or whiling away the hours at his club with his former comrades-in-arms. He rarely thinks about the fiery Portuguese woman he saved from an abusive marriage by wedding her himself. It was supposed to be a marriage in name only, but even five years later and a world away, he can’t seem to forget her.

Catarina Neves never forgot what it felt like to be scared, desperate, and subject to the whims of her cruel father. Thanks to a marriage of convenience and her incredible skill as a lacemaker, she’s become an independent and wealthy woman. But when she’s once again thrust into a dangerous situation, she finds herself in London and knocking on the door of the husband she hasn’t seen since those war-torn years in Portugal. Catarina tells Benedict she wants an annulment, but when he argues against it, can she trust him enough to ask for what she really needs?

My thoughts:

I've enjoyed all of the books in Shana Galen's The Survivors series and have eagerly anticipated the journey to love of each of the men hand-picked by Lieutenant Colonel Benedict Draven. Like most readers, I thought Draven was a forty-something, confirmed bachelor dedicated to his career and his men. What a shock it was to learn during the last book in the series that Draven has a wife. A fiery, much younger, Portuguese wife! I couldn't wait for The Claiming of the Shrew to learn all the details of this stunning revelation and I'm happy to report that Draven and Catarina do not disappoint!

Galen takes one of my favorite historical tropes, marriage-of-convenience, and folds it into one of the most difficult (in my opinion) types of relationships to successfully portray: a May-December romance. That she does it with such ease and accuracy speaks to her skill both as a wordsmith and as an author who does her research. As someone who was the younger member of a happy, 25 year, May-December marriage, I can say with confidence that she nailed the dynamic of this particular type of relationship. I was especially moved by the strength of Catarina and the vulnerability of the older Draven, a man who - on paper - should have held the power in the relationship. Separating them for five years immediately following their vows gave each the opportunity to evolve and reunite on a more level playing field. It works beautifully.

Woven into the romance is a suspense thread that brings danger to the mix along with a villain who is pure evil. Galen also introduces new Survivors to readers, ones I'm hoping we'll be seeing a lot more of in future books.

While characters from previous books make appearances in this book, The Claiming of the Shrew stands well on its own and can be enjoyed equally by readers new to The Survivors as well as fans of the series.

This masked lord...
Lord Jasper, younger son of a marquess, suffered horrible burns fighting in the Napoleonic Wars. He wears a mask to hide his face from the stares and screams and finds comfort in the shadows. Jasper is an exceptional bounty hunter, so when a woman summons him to her deathbed and asks him to find her runaway daughter before she passes away, he doesn't refuse. Jasper is close to his quarry when he's knifed by an assailant. Imagine his surprise when he regains consciousness in the arms of the woman he seeks. Except she's not at all what he expected.

Is not the only one with scars.
On a remote cliff on the sea, Olivia Carlisle calls her five-year-old son in from an approaching storm. But the little boy is more interested in the man he's found on the trail to their hidden cottage. Olivia fears men and wants nothing more than to leave the injured man where she found him. But his knife wound is severe, and with the approaching storm, she knows leaving him will condemn him to death. As Jasper begins to heal, Olivia acknowledges her attraction to him, even though such emotions terrify her almost as much as returning to London. Jasper must convince her that her only chance at safety is to challenge the man who pursues her. They must travel into the lion's den—he to face his vulnerability and she to face her worst fears.

My thoughts:

I've enjoyed all of the books in Galen's The Survivors series but Jasper and Olivia's story is my favorite. They both carry deep emotional trauma that has led them to hide from others. For Olivia, it meant running away from everything and everyone she knew while Jasper hides his burns beneath a silk mask and his emotional vulnerability even deeper. I liked that the first half of the book takes place in Olivia's secluded cliff-side cottage with the only human interaction between Jasper, Olivia, and her five-year-old son, Richard. It gives this wary couple the necessary time and seclusion to let down their guards enough to become friends, and possibly more, before they have to face the challenges that await in London. I admired Olivia's strength, the tough decisions she made to protect her son and herself, her determination to take back control of her life once the decision to finally confront her attacker is made, and to fight for both happiness and love. I appreciated Jasper's patience and care in light of Olivia's fears, his gentleness with both her and Richard, and his determination to protect them at any cost to himself. These three belong together and I was cheering them on the entire way.

Speaking of Richard, I love that kid! He's an energetic, inquisitive, scene-stealing, heart-grabbing sweetheart. Many of his scenes are infused with humor (he is a five-year-old boy, after all) but there are some between Richard and Jasper that are so tender and poignant I was almost brought to tears. Theirs is a love story of a different kind and it captured my heart just as surely as the love between Jasper and Olivia.

There are nine more books planned for Shana Galen's The Survivors series. Based on the quality of the first four, I need to make more room on my keeper shelves!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I recently had the opportunity to interview Shana Galen. I hope you enjoy our Q&A below. Don't miss the giveaway at the end!
Welcome to The Romance Dish, Shana! Unmask Me If You Can is your fourth Survivors story. How many more books are planned for this series?
Initially, I’d planned 12 books, but then I realized I had to write a book for Benedict, the leader of the troop. So there are 13 planned now—9 to go!
What can you share about the next book and when do you expect it to be published?
The next book is about Benedict Draven, the leader of the Survivors (aka Draven’s Dozen). At the start of the war, he saved a young woman by marrying her in a Catholic ceremony he considers completely illegal. He didn’t expect to ever see her again. The Claiming of the Shrew is what happens when Catarina shows up in London after the war, wanting an annulment so she can marry another man. It will be out in April 2019.
I'm already eagerly anticipating Draven and Catarina's story based on their brief interaction in Unmask Me if you Can
I have loved the characters in this series. Will we have an opportunity to catch up with any/all of the couples before the series comes to an end?
That’s going to be a lot of couples! I don’t know that I could do that in a book and still have it focus on the main characters. Maybe I’ll do an epilogue like I did for the Jewels of the Ton series.
A series epilogue! I like that idea!
What was your favorite scene to write in this book? What was the most difficult?
My favorite scenes to write were those with Jasper and Richard, the heroine’s 5-year-old son. Jasper wears a mask and avoids kids, who are generally afraid of him. He doesn’t know what to do with this kid, who thinks scars are cool and asks all those questions we adults aren’t quite sure how to answer.
The most difficult to write were the intimate scenes with Jasper and Olivia. They’ve both faced so much trauma, and I really wanted to respect that and also show that love can overcome anything.
I thought you did an outstanding job of crafting the intimate scenes between Jasper and Olivia with great care. And the scenes between Jasper and Richard were some of my favorites in the book.
I’m currently enjoying the crisp, clear days, cool nights, and hearty soups and stews of fall, not to mention the football. I love football! What’s your favorite season? What makes it so? Is there a favorite food or activity that reminds you of it?
My favorite season is spring. I love the warm (but not too warm) weather, the flowers blooming, the baby animals, and dining al fresco. I always feel like it’s really spring when all the St. Patrick’s Day activities kick off. My daughter does Irish dancing, so we do a lot of parades and shows around St. Pat’s.
Let's do a fast five!
Hot cider or Hot chocolate? Hot cider
Dresses or jeans? Dresses
Mountains or ocean? Ocean
Christmas decorations before or after Thanksgiving? After, of course
Must-have Thanksgiving side dish? Mashed potatoes
I shouldn't have asked that last question. Now I'm hungry for mashed potatoes! lol
Thanks so much for visiting with us, Shana. Do you have anything else to add? Would you like to ask my readers a question?
Readers, I’m about to start having my cover designer work on the cover for The Claiming of the Shrew. All the series covers feature women in beautiful dresses. What color should Catarina’s dress be? (PJ, jumping in to add that the colors of the dresses on the first four covers have been pink, light blue, peach, and mint green.)
He's turned seduction into an art form...
Rafe Beaumont, fifth son of an earl, uses his irresistible charm with the ladies to glean dangerous war secrets. Now he's putting those skills to the ultimate test: capturing an elusive assassin by seducing his daughter. The problem? She's entirely immune to Rafe's flattery.
Never before has Collette Fortier met a man as attractive as Rafe. But her father's life is at stake, and succumbing to Rafe would be disastrous. But when Rafe turns the tables on her, offering support and friendship instead of a fleeting affair, Collette finds herself tempted in ways she never could have imagined...
Suspense, romance, spies, and hedgehogs. That's right, I said hedgehogs. They all play significant roles in this third book of Shana Galen's popular The Survivors historical romance series that follows the post-war journeys to love of a small group of younger sons who were part of a secret military regiment during the war with France. Rafe, the youngest of eight children of an earl, put his good looks and charm to good use behind enemy lines to ferret out secrets for England. When his former commander asks him to take on a new mission, Rafe is ready to put his skills to work but the woman from whom he must obtain information, inexplicably to Rafe, is the first woman in his entire life who seems immune to both his looks and his charm!
Frenchwoman Collette Fortier has traveled to London under a false name and false pretense. Collette's father, a feared assassin for Napoleon, is being held prisoner by the new regime and she fears for his life. Only if she obtains a set of codes from England's Foreign Office, will her father's captors release him. Collette loves her father and remembers what their peaceful country life was like before he was forced to carry out Napoleon's demands. She will do anything to save him but she can't be distracted by the charming man who seems suddenly interested in her. She can't imagine why he would be anyway. He flusters her. And when Collette gets flustered, embarrassing things happen, such as blurting out everything she knows about the mating habits of hedgehogs. It's hilarious, endearing, and, ultimately, irresistible to Rafe.
As the two dance around one another while each pursuing their own individual mission they begin to move from adversaries into friendship. And when the friendship begins to evolve so do deeper feelings but obstacles abound. Rafe was deeply affected by events in his childhood and believes himself unable to love which hinders him from recognizing what he's feeling. Also, he must succeed in his mission to find Collette's father and bring him to justice and that is the straw that will break whatever hope they have of being together.  Unless they can find another way...
I've really enjoyed this series and An Affair With a Spare is another winner. Galen has created two multi-layered, engaging characters with complex backgrounds and placed them in a situation that seems impossible to resolve. The story flows smoothly with a nice balance of both suspense and romance along with action, humor, and heartfelt emotion. As Rafe's background is unveiled it's easy to see why he's become the man his comrades call "The Seducer." As more of the man beneath that facade emerges, I found myself falling for him just as hard as Collette does. As for Collette, I admired her loyalty to her father and her determination to save him, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. I also found her simply charming and couldn't help but smile each time bits of hedgehog mating trivia burst from her mouth. I so wanted these two to find a way to a happy ending. Galen didn't make it easy on them and, I admit, I had no idea how she was going to resolve the issues between them. How she accomplished it was a surprise I didn't see coming (I always enjoy that) but one that I could thoroughly embrace.
As usual, the secondary characters are vibrantly portrayed and contribute much to the story. We see more of the horribly scarred Jasper, who hides his burns behind a mask, in this book and that's only ramped up my excitement for his story. It will be next in Unmask Me if You Can, due out on November 6.
In this excerpt from An Affair With a Spare
former soldier and charmer Rafe Beaumont and
spy Collette Fortier remove their figurative masks.
“Will you bring me here again?” she asked.
“Not if you object. I don’t enjoy standing about in cold gardens in the middle of the night, but it won’t be the worst hardship I’ve had to endure.”
She glanced about his flat, her eyes lingering on paintings and a few of the pieces he’d collected—vases, lamps, and other accoutrement. “It’s dangerous coming here,” she said.
“Because you think I will try to take you to bed?”
“Because I think you won’t.”
Rafe stared at her. Women did this sometimes. As well as he understood them, at times, they still managed to say something that flummoxed him. “I’m at sea here,” he finally admitted. “We are friends, nothing more.”
“Correct.”
“And when I proposed something more, you were not interested.”
“I was interested. I simply did not think becoming your lover a good idea.”
“And now it is?”
“Oh, definitely not.”
He gave her a long look. “My ship is sinking.”
“That’s why you’re dangerous. Because you make me want what I cannot have.”
“Oh, you can have me,” he said, rather too quickly. “What I mean is—”
She laughed. “I thought you didn’t want me anymore.”
Where the devil had she acquired that notion? She was the only woman he did want. “How could I not want you? That has never changed. If you want to change your position on the matter…”
“No. I meant only to say you tempt me. Coming here tempts me.”
“Good. I like to know I’m not the only one tempted.”
She rose, and he did the same. She linked her fingers, looking nervously about.
“What would we do were we hedgehogs, Miss Fortier?”
Her eyes widened. “I don’t—”
“Would you approach me? Would I approach you?”
“The, uh, boar pursues the sow, attempting to mount her.”
“I see. And what does the sow do?”
“She will persistently reject his advances. A high percentage of observed hedgehog courtships do not result in cop-cop—”
“Copulation?”
She nodded.
“I do wonder what tempts a hedgehog.” Before she could answer, he moved closer and placed a finger lightly over her lips. “That was a rhetorical question.”
“I wonder what tempts you,” she said shyly. “Do I tempt you now?”
Washed in the golden firelight, she was lovelier than words. And Rafe knew a lot of words to describe women. With her glossy hair piled on her head and her cheeks tinged pink by the wine and the firelight, she looked young but regal. He dared not allow his gaze to dip lower than her chin. “Immeasurably,” he murmured.
She stepped closer, and he took her hand. It felt warm and soft in his, and he lifted it to his lips and kissed her knuckles. Then, turning it over, he placed a lingering kiss on her palm. Her dark eyes turned even darker when his mouth skated up her flesh to brush against the skin at the inside of her wrist. She must have dabbed scent here because, above the clean smell of her skin, he also detected the fragrance of juniper.
His mouth explored her sensitive flesh until he found her pulse, which fluttered rapidly. She might have pulled her hand away at any time. He held it with the lightest touch, but when he slid his lips higher to the tender skin at the inside of her elbow, she trembled. Rafe’s gaze never left hers when he flicked his tongue out and tasted her flesh.
She inhaled sharply. “You are very good at this, aren’t you?” she whispered.
“If my imaginings count, I’ve had extensive experience touching you.”
“Did you ever imagine kissing my lips?”
He grinned. “Once. Or twice.”
Her free hand wrapped around his neck, sliding into his hair. He straightened and she pulled him close.
When he released her hand to wrap his arms around her, she twined her arms about his neck and looked up at him. Rafe had never wanted to kiss a woman so badly. And he’d never feared doing so before. The last time he’d tried to kiss her, she had pushed him away. What if he kissed her now and frightened her? What if the kiss ruined the friendship, and she wouldn’t see him any longer? Draven would kill him, but even worse, Rafe would lose Collette.
“Kiss me,” she said when he hesitated.
“Are you certain this is a good idea? I don’t generally kiss my friends.”
“Surely you can make an exception for me.”
“Surely.” He bent closer, then pulled back again. “But should I? This might change everything, and I do value our friendship.”
“As do I.” She pressed closer to him, and the air caught in his lungs when her breasts pushed against his chest.
“Then we stay friends,” he said, voice choked.
“Friends who have shared a kiss.”
“Yes.” He brushed his lips over hers, then jerked back again. “That’s actually a new category of friendship for me. Should we discuss its parameters before we go on?”
She sighed, sounding suspiciously frustrated. “No. Just kiss me, Rafe.” But she didn’t wait for him to comply. Instead, she rose on tiptoe and took his mouth with hers. Her lips were soft and gentle but insistent. He couldn’t have refrained from kissing her back if he’d wanted. Kissing her was as necessary in that moment as breathing. And when her mouth became more insistent, he met her demands, kissing her deeper, holding her tighter, teasing her with his mouth until he felt her tremble. He trembled as well. He’d never reacted this way to kissing a woman before. He’d always enjoyed kissing women—some more than others—but he’d never
been so moved, never felt as though he needed a woman like he needed Collette.
“I think this is enough for now,” he said, pulling back.
She blinked up at him, her brown eyes almost black. “Really?”
He ran his thumb across the satin of her cheek, marveling at the silky flesh. “I think it’s for the best.”
“And I thought it best if we continue.”
That was a rather appealing idea as well. Who the devil cared about restraint and all the rest of that rot? She was in his arms and he wanted her and she wanted him…and if he took her, he might just ruin everything. Because he was not who she thought he was.
