Earlier this month, I posted about my habit of decorating for the different seasons. There's something else I change with the seasons and that's the scents I use in my home. My allergies make me sensitive to many scents which is why I don't wear cologne. However, there are a handful of aromas that don't create coughing jags and watery eyes and those I enjoy to the fullest.
My favorite summer scents are lemon and basil. For the past three or four months I've been indulging in the freshness of lemon air freshener, basil hand soap, a bowl of fresh lemons (lemonade anyone?), and a basil plant (Caprese salads for the win).
Now that we've moved into the crisp, cool mornings of autumn, it's time to change my condo's signature scent as well. In the kitchen/dining room/living room area it's all about apples. I have a bowl of apples on the counter, ready for daily snacking and maybe a pie or crisp or crumble...or two. To amplify the fresh apple aroma, I use Febreze air freshener in Fresh Spiced Apple and Mrs. Meyer's Apple Cider hand soap. In the bedrooms, it's all about Aromatique's Cinnamon Cider potpourri, probably my all-time favorite scent. It just makes me so happy!
So, tell me, do you have signature scents for each season?
If so, what's your scent for fall? Do you use it throughout the house?

I too am allergic to most scents. I stopped wearing perfume a very long time ago or most scented anythings (cleaners are a killer but thankfully most have unscented now). natural scents are the only smells I can tolerate such as vanilla and, yes, fruits and some flowers. I have one of those candle-type containers that you melt scented wax and they have lots of natural scents to choose from (apple cinnamon is a favorite).
ReplyDeleteWe're not allowed to burn candles where I live which is why I use scented air freshener.
DeleteI enjoy light citrus scents. During the summer I use lemon which is my favorite of all, but the fall and winter I make applesauce and any scent which has apple in it is wonderful. The main area is so welcoming and gives me great pleasure.
ReplyDeleteI like light citrus also.
DeleteI have pumpkin spice candles for Fall I love the smell.
ReplyDeletePenney
The rest of the year I use all kinds rose, lavender apple scented candles.
DeletePenney
I restrict my pumpkin spice obsession to cream cheese. ;-)
DeleteLavender in the bedroom is perfect and easy. It is ideal for my sleep. The living room and family room has apple throughout since I wait for the autumn to indulge in these senses. I pick apples, cook with apples and look forward to the beauty and enjoyment.
ReplyDeleteI don't use lavender. I've discovered that it causes me to sleep a little too deeply.
DeleteNo, but it's a nice idea
ReplyDeleteI do switch up scents! For me fall is all about the apple scents with some vanilla thrown in (because fall baking!).
ReplyDeleteI love using vanilla in my baking but, sadly, artificial vanilla scents give me headaches.
DeleteI have asthma and allergies. I prefer clean, fresh scents like linen, apples, sunflowers, lavender, and vanilla. I can't be around overwhelming potpourri, candles, scent blocks, or oil plug-ins.
ReplyDeleteI also have asthma with my allergies. It's been a process of trial and error to discover which scents I can live with.
DeleteI change scents - but I do it just by my mood. Generally I save the apple scents for fall and winter.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the lemon ----I like that all the time. As I say, it is based on how I feel.
Hope everyone is happy and safe and well.
I find it fascinating how our moods are impacted by scents - or how certain scents evoke certain moods.
DeleteThe only scents in my house come from perfume and hand soaps!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy citrus scents - lemon, mandarin orange - also ginger. In the spring I like a bit of floral like Lily of the Valley
ReplyDeleteI don't have favorite scents for seasons. Once I find a couple of scents that don't cause me to have a headache, I tend to stick with them!
ReplyDeleteThat's my measuring stick too.
DeleteI have to be careful with scents. Most give me headaches. The food scents seem too heavy. But pumpkin and cinnamon seem to be okay so I kinda stick with them. Flower scents have to be very light. I really like the linen scents, so I use them most of the time.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how the same scent can affect many of us so differently.
DeleteI don’t have intentional seasonal scents but I suppose the herbs and spices I use for different seasons do scent the house. Basil and mint in summer and cinnamon, apple and gingerbread scents in the colder seasons.
ReplyDeleteI love basil and mint. I grow both in the summer and love their fresh scents.
DeleteI use seasonal candles, but I only burn them in the kitchen. Sometimes the scent wafts upstairs. Currently have one called Autumn Wreath burning.

I don't use scents in my house as a decorative piece. If I was to choose one for fall it would be cinnamin.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was growing up my mom used to simmer cinnamon sticks in a pot of water on the stove. Such a wonderful aroma!
DeleteOther than flowers from the garden during the year, I have no scents in the house. We do use evergreen scent around Christmas if we do not have a live tree. Cinnamon and apples are the scents I have for Fall and through the winter. We have a wood stove that we keep running during the coldest months. I have a pot of water on it with cinnamon sticks and cloves. It gives the house such a warm and comfortable feeling.
ReplyDeleteI can't with my allergies
ReplyDeleteI do love seasonal scents. My favorites for fall are apple and any type of berry like cranberry, blackberry, etc. Unfortunately I am not a pumpkin fan.
ReplyDeleteBlueberry, 🎃 and 🍎 my fall scents
ReplyDeleteI don't have any fall scents that I use. I do like the balsam, or Christmas scents for hand soaps. I am not a candle person.
