Today's Special -- Addison Fox

We are so pleased to have Addison Fox as our guest today at TheRomance Dish. Addison is an ad woman by day and romance author by night. She writes the Sons of the Zodiac series, which is, in my humble opinion, fabulous! Check out my review of book 1, Warrior Ascended here, and my review of her latest, Warrior Avenged here, which is book 2 in the series. A lifelong reader, Addison is now sharing her love of the genre with her readers by continuing to write about her Sons of the Zodiac, immortal Warriors granted the powers of their astrological signs and charged with protecting humanity. I had the great pleasure to meet Addison in person at RWA in Orlando, and she is just as fabulous as her books. Please give her a warm welcome.

“Astrology. Warriors. Astrology. Warriors. Hmmm…I wonder if that would work?”

A common enough question asked of authors is “Where do you get your ideas?” And while I certainly can’t explain it, I do know that there is an electrifying moment when you do have an idea that you think will work. There’s this crazy little zing that shoots its way up your spine that sort of pulses with “Yes, that just might work.”

And then, after you think about it for a few minutes, it gets a little louder…a little clearer. “Yes. That will work.”

The Sons of the Zodiac series was like that for me. I wish I knew the impetus for the idea – I was sitting there watching TV not even thinking about plotting or books – and the idea just sort of exploded inside my brain. But one thing was certain – once the idea took hold it just wouldn’t let me go. I am really enjoying the development of this series - taking these larger-than-life warrior heroes, their very human personality traits and a mythical back story that’s formed their lives and turning them loose in my imagination. Of course, the real fun kicks in when they’re confronted with the only woman who can possibly fulfill them for the rest of eternity!

As a writer, I love that “story zing,” but as a reader, I love when I have that exact same experience. It’s that electrifying moment when I pick up a book and just know – from the first few paragraphs – that I’m not going to put this book down. Anything written by Nora Roberts or Jayne Ann Krentz promises that ride for me. And I love it when I find an author I’ve not read or a new series that just pulls me in. The ICE series by Anne Stuart was one of those finds. The IMMORTALS AFTER DARK series by Kresley Cole continues to be one of those series for me. The CHOSEN series by Christina Dodd is just fantastic. And my dear friend, Jo Davis, writes the FIREFIGHTERS OF STATION FIVE series and I love each and every one of those gorgeous firefighters!

A recent find I can’t stop talking about is JK Beck’s new series, the Shadow Keepers. The first book is WHEN BLOOD CALLS and I am engrossed, hook, line and sinker.

Since we’re dishing today, what series are some of your favorites? Which authors pull you in, over and over, with a continued promise of telling a good story or what new authors have you found that you just can’t stop talking about?

Before I end this post, I’d like to take a quick personal moment to thank Gannon for all of her support and encouragement. I officially became a published author earlier this year with the publication of WARRIOR ASCENDED and Gannon has been an incredible champion of my work. Thank you!!

I can’t wait to visit with everyone for the day and I’m excited to offer a fun giveaway to a lucky commenter. Today I’m giving away WARRIOR AVENGED, the second book in the Sons of the Zodiac series.

  1. I love a good series and I always HAVE to start right at the beginning. I love nothing more than to discover a new author or a new series and not have to wait a year for the next book because there are already several books in the series out. Then I can settle my happy little self down and read to my heart's content.

Current series favorites includes: The Arcane Society series by Jayne Ann Krentz / Amanda Quick, also her Dreamlight series. Also enjoying Kay Hooper's FBI SCU series, which is dark and haunting. It scares the daylights out of me and I still keep reading.

I've never heard of the sons of Zodiac series, so I'll definitely have to check it out.

  2. I love a series of books, reading a single title I am never ready for it to end. I would suppose that is the authors credo, always leave them wanting more.

A series is what got me started reading Nora Roberts, The Sister's Island Trilogy is what started it all.

I like the sound of your Zodiac Series.

  3. Daz, I'm the same way when it comes to happily discovering a series, and I can read several books that are already out and not having to wait.

You'll definitely have to read Addison's series!

  4. Dianna, I love Nora's Three Sisters Island trilogy, too. I especially love the trilogies that are set in Ireland! But then again, I have all of her books, including her J.D. Robb series. :-)

  5. Daz-

I SO know what you mean about starting at the beginning! And there is something special about finding a series where a few books are already out.

My mom and I have a running joke - I read Nora Roberts's trilogies as they come out and she refuses and only waits until all of them are out so she can read them quickly, one right after the other!

    Thanks for visiting today!

  8. Adrian Phoenix is one of my new favorites. I love Fern Michaels Sisterhood series. As I just started reading Urban Fantasy or Paranormal Romance recently, I have lots of series on my TBR list.
Sons of the Zodiac sounds like my type of books.

  9. Hi Addison! Welcome to the Romance Dish! Gannon has been raving about your books since your debut. I have them on my tbr and am looking forward to finding time to read them.

I love to read books in a series and I'm a bit anal about reading them in order. ;-) Nora writes terrific series. I especially love her Chesapeake Bay, Born In and Gallaghers of Ardmore series. And, of course, her MacGregors have a very special place on my keeper shelf.

I have many series favorites, including Julia Quinn's Bridgertons, Johanna Lindsey's Mallorys, Christina Dodd's Wilders and Chosen Ones and Virginia Kantra's Children of the Sea.

  10. Hi there, Addison, and welcome to the blog! We're so glad to have you dish with us today. Congrats on the newest release! Gannon has raved and raved about it!

Favorite series? Oh, boy. I have many, so I'll only name a few: Julia Quinn's Bridgerton family, Victoria Alexander's Effington family, Suzanne Enoch's Lessons in Love, Lisa Kleypas's Hathaway family, Colleen Gleason's Gardella Vampire Chronicles, Kathryn Smith's Ryland family, and Elizabeth Hoyt's Legend of the Four Soldiers. Okay, so maybe that was more than a few. LOL

  11. I'm a little (OK a lot) OCD when it comes to reading series books in order! AND...I don't start reading a series until I have all the books in hand. Only then will I start reading and not stop until I close the last page of the last book. The one exception to that is The Cynsters books by Stephanie Laurens. I think she's up to #17 in that series. Those, I've read as I got them.

I also enjoy it when a favorite author of a favorite series (Julia Quinn's Bridgerton's) comes back with a new series centered around minor, but special characters. Her newest series will be about the Smythe-Smith girls featured as the musical stars in most of the Bridgerton books. Remember those horrid musicales that no one wanted to attend but everyone did?

Addison is a new-to-me author. Her books sound pretty good...like something I would enjoy reading.

You've hit on one of my favorites - I think the Gardella series is one of the best series I've read in a long time. I loved how the story arc spread over the five books and I really loved Colleen Gleason's mythology/back story for the characters.

    Thanks for visiting!!

I SO agree with you on JQ's series. I love how she's drawn on characters so well-loved in the Bridgerton series and brought them into other books.

I also loved her Duke/Mr. Cavendish books a few years ago - I LOVED how she told both sides of that story.

  24. Karyn, if you're starting to get into the paranormal world, then you should really give Addison's series a try. You'll love it!

  25. Addison, can you tell us which Warrior is next in the series? I was thinking it might be Drake since you gave a hint (I think) who his mate might be. All of your Warriors are smexy, but I especially can't wait for Grey's book, seeing as I'm an Aries, too. ;-)

  26. PJ:

I am SO with you on Jo's series! Not only is she an awesome writer, but I'm so happy to call her a dear friend as well.

  29. Gannon;

Thanks for asking!!! Quinn, my Taurus warrior, is actually coming up next. His book - WARRIOR BETRAYED - is out in May 2011.

I really love Drake, but he's not quite ready yet for his HEA yet!! :-)

  30. Oh, yes! I cannot wait to see who the woman will be who can tame Quinn, bull-headed (no pun intended) Taurus that he is!!

  31. Hi! Although I like to read a series, sometimes the lag time between books would drive me nuts. By the time the latest installment shows up, I've forgotten the previous books (although I do this way more for children's and YA books). And sometimes I'd read a series out of sequence, but that's tricky as for some series, once I read the latest book, I have no inclination to read the previous ones (MaryJanice Davidson and the Sookie Stackhouse series, just to name two).

    Right now:
    - Arcane Society by Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick/Jayne Castle
    - Hathaway family by Lisa Kleypas
    - Harry Dresden by Jim Butcher (although I'm going to wait for the next book to be out before reading "Changes")

  32. Cories, I love the Hathaways, too! I know what you mean about waiting in between books in a series. At least Addison doesn't make us wait too long. *g*

Oh - I LOVE the Dresden Files!!!! Harry Dresden is such an incredibly well-drawn character and every one of those books are riveting page turners!

  36. Julie Garwood is an author that I know will give me exactly what I want in her books. She is great at giving that first sentence that hooks you and pulls you into the story.
Nora Roberts, Christina Dodd, Lisa Gardner, Iris Johansen, Amanda Quick/Jayne Ann Krentz/Jayne Castle,Tony Hillerman, Karen Moning, the list goes on of authors that I can sit down to read and forget to stop.
Like Daz, I love series and have to start at the beginning. If I know it will only be three or four books, I will wait until they are all out before reading them. I like being able to follow the characters and story arc closely.
Congratulations on your Zodiac series and best of luck with your future releases.
