Birthday Month Giveaway #11 - - Seasonal Reading

I've been thinking lately about my reading habits and how they change over time. Things like reading locations, time of day, days of the week, or even the type of books I gravitate toward. If you had asked me a few weeks ago, I would probably have said that my reading habits don't vary that much, at least in the short term. After giving it some thought, though, I've realized that they actually do. I've determined that I am, in fact, a seasonal reader.

I'm a multi-genre reader and even within the romance genre, I enjoy a multitude of book types: historical, contemporary, romantic suspense, women's fiction, and more. But in reviewing the books I read over the course of a year, it clearly shows that I lean more heavily toward certain types of books during certain seasons. For instance, now that we're easing into fall I'm particularly partial to any romance with a sports theme, with football heading the list. From mid-October through December, I love to lose myself in holiday romances. January and February, for some reason, see me leaning into women's fiction while the summer months have me scooping up flirty, contemporary romance. Historical romances, on the other hand, seem to suit my mood any time of the year. Maybe that's because they were my gateway into romance reading.

Where I read changes too. The cooler temperatures of fall are perfect for getting lost in a good story while relaxing on my outdoor patio. My favorite summer reading locale is at the complex pool. Spring is usually late afternoons inside (allergies and pollen are a real nuisance) while winter reading is mostly in the evenings, in a cozy chair with a warm blanket tucked around me, muted lighting (I read on my Kindle), and electric candles for ambiance.

So, tell me, friends. How do your reading patterns change with the seasons?

One randomly chosen person posting a comment before 11:00 PM, September 12 will receive two books from my home collection.

  1. I don’t go through seasonal moods. Just moods sometimes it’s contemporary or historical, or suspense.

  2. I read a great deal all year long but concentrate on more profound and deeper novels during the winter months. Summer is usually lighter with mysteries.

  3. Reading is very special for me and when I want to change direction I read historicals at great length and then switch to contemporary. This has occurred during the fall and then Springtime for cozies.

  4. I think mine is the mood I'm in, one week I don't read anything and then the next I can't stop reading

  5. I read Christmas books any time. Sometimes I read a bunch of books in a week and other times only 1 or 2, depends what is going on. I basically read contemp romance and some women's fiction.

  6. That;s funny, I never noticed that my patterns change as well. In the summer, I definitely lean toward romantic suspense. Contemporaries and women's fiction with beach themes hit me in February. Of course, I like the Christmas-theme during November through January and again in July.

  8. My reading seasons are pretty similar to yours--historical all year long, but October to December, I'm apt to read more holiday romance; in the Spring, I'm apt to read a lot of rom-coms or contemporary romance. I do not read sports romances, like ever. I made an exception for Susan Elizabeth Phillips...and a recent rom-com diversity one, which I read because of the diversity aspect, not the sports part...but I'm pretty anti-sports in real life and more so in fiction. *LOL* I think for my fall picks, I probably do more mysteries and thriller type books--not necessarily romance ones though, but like cozy mysteries where it's more about the mystery but there's a side romance...I LOVE those but I think I read those more in the Fall.

  9. I am not as organized as you. It is more based on my emotional well being. If I am in need of cheering I am more likely to read contemporary stories. I Like Sports! So, I read those on and off. I am just really a fan of historicals so will read those any time. I think for me it is an author....if I find a book that I think I will like I read it.

And, I am sure it is my emotions not the season which makes me choose what to read. Where is varied too. I am an unorganized mess.

Hope everyone is well and safe and happy.

  10. I don't read seasonally. Mostly change with moods. I do have favorite reading spots though. Mostly front porch in the morning and back deck in the afternoon. I food the shade. LOL

  12. My favorite time of the year, September through December, is also my favorite reading season.I definitely read more books during this time frame than I do at any other time of the year. Starting with spooky mysteries, romantic suspense, paranormal romance, holiday romances, and seasonal stories, and of course, lots of cookbooks.

  13. I'll read seasonal books throughout the year--mystery and romance

  14. My reading habits don't change with the seasons although I will say that I prefer to read holiday themed books at the holidays as opposed to in the middle of the summer.

  15. I don't think I change with the seasons, I just change as the feeling hits. Sometimes I just want to read a sweet romance, sometimes it's a historical that will take to a different time period, sometimes I'll prefer a sexier read, or even just a cozy mystery. Women's fiction fits in somewhere in there.

  16. Right now I am starting to read Christmas books. Time for some positive reading with everything COVID. Fall I tend to read on my patio in my rocking chair. The same for Spring. Summer is usually indoors as it gets so hot. I need fun and flirty then.

  17. To be honest, I do tend to read more "winter" -themed books in colder weather (Christmas, especially), but as for the spring/summer, anything goes! :)

  18. I'm not sure whether I'm truly a seasonal reader so much as reading what lands in front of me, which I guess tends to be a little seasonal as authors time their releases throughout the year :)

  19. My reading patterns don’t seem to change due to season. I read on a jag of a genre and suddenly feel like cracking open something else for a time, I read primarily romance but a bit of everything under that genre.

  20. The biggest change to my reading pattern is tha during the holiday season I almost always read holiday themed books and many of them anthologies. I read a lot of Christmas/Yule/New Year anthologies.

    Happy Birthday!

  21. Normally I’m a snowbird so I’m able to read outside year round. Last year due to COVID we stayed in Wisconsin for most of the winter. I primarily read contemporary and historical romances. I love Christmas themed stories . I usually start reading them when the weather cools in the fall. I like to read the beach settings year round. A great escape from the cold or gloomy gray days!
Happy birthday! I’ve been introduced to some wonderful authors thanks to your reviews and giveaways. Thanks!

  22. My reading habits don't change with the seasons. I pretty much read whatever strikes my fancy on any given day. I have my auto-buys, preorders, etc that I wait for and fill in with whatever I have on my bookshelf. I have a spreadsheet of all my titles on my TBR shelves. When I don't know what I want to read next, I just take a look at what I have on my spreadsheet until I find something that stops me in my tracks. That's what I read next.

Right now, I'm reading a new-to-me author, Cari Maxwell with her book 'Meant to be Mine'. So far, it seems like a pretty good story and I'm relatively pleased with this author's writing. She might be a keeper.

  23. How odd, I posted a comment last night and it isn't here. I just finished posting on Giveaway #12 and came back to check this one. It isn't the first time posts have been dropped, even though they show up on my screen. I really do hope it doesn't happen again. My computer must be doing weird things.

  24. The only seasonal changes in my reading is the advent of holiday books and anthologies that come out. I include Halloween themed books or anthologies. Most of my other holiday reading centers around the Christmas season and I am happy to see more Hanukkah stories out there, too!
